    I have recently purchased an X-S10 second hand and it will be my first proper tool. While I wait I decided to learn as much about it as possible and found your video to be immensely useful. I plan on using it mostly for video and B-roll. If it is not too much trouble I would love to know if there are any things that might help during an outdoor static shoot but might be difficult to figure out for a novice.
    Best wishes! -John

    I just watched all your videos of the Fuji X-S10, and the innovation I love most about the camera does not really get a mention (I think): It's the ability to access a lot more menu settings with the custom modes on the PASM dial than in the custom settings of any of the other Fuji cameras I have. It's not quite as complete as in the Ricoh GR III for example, but it still means that instead of being just a JPEG variation tool as with the previous Fuji custom modes, you can use it now to adapt to different shooting situations. So I have mine set to shooting panoramas, portraits, sport and street, something I was not able to do before as I can now change the shutter, the focus mode etc. etc. I think this deserves a separate video, as it is an awesome new feature!:) Alas, I don't have an X-T4, so I don't know if that was added there, but it certainly wasn't in the X100V, and it is by far the best new change in the X-S10 in my book!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    While investigating to this photo camera, I found "sRGB" or "Adobe" colour profile. Which one should I choose? And why? I've read, that Adobe profile has a wider colour gamut and is used in a professional use, feg. while printing or editing photos, while sRGB is widely used as a standard. So the question is - if Adobe profile is of a wider colour gamut and used by professionals, why sRGB is available at all if Adobe seems to have a better quaility and flexibility of use?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are advantages to Adobe, if you do have advanced needs and will be editing your images in a post-processing application. It is however, less widely accepted, so there may be incompatibility issues with some displays.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nh6405 The settings for macro follow the same rules as other photos. In general, use the largest aperture (F4/F2.8) and the smallest ISO setting you can. Focus can be tricky, and I advise manual focus. I prefer the expanded view for accuracy, so if you set Focus Check to On, it will show a small area of the image to help focus.

    18:25 _"don't buy a new camera if what you really need is more practice"_ Ha! Well said. I fit that description perfectly. I must admit that I suffer from what is either "gear envy" or "gear greed". I really should stick with my X-T30 and my small collection of primes but the X-S10 is tempting. It reminds me of my first experiences with a Canon DSLR (Rebel Xti I think) and how frustrating it was to miss so many photos as I tried to use a kit zoom for all situations. Having learned over the years, and seeing good stabilization options in cameras like this, I can't help but wonder what it would be like to "try again" with my original setup of just one zoom lens. Yup, I'm suffering from "gear greed" for sure! Thanks for the great videos on the X-S10. I've subbed.

    I watched this again hoping there would be detailed explanation on the mini HDMI, USB and audio connectors and their respective settings and functionality. Would you be interested in making a quick video on these? I.E. if you have audio leaving a mixer and plugged into the mic jack, what and how would you set it? Someone said the USB C with the conversion cable that comes with doubles as a headphone jack. True? Thanks Maarten.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your kind words. Yes, there is a USB-C cable that can be used for headphone audio out included. That type of connection should be possible - set the levels so that there is minimal yellow and no red on the meter. As always, for crucial recordings, so a test prior to make sure everything is going as planned/expected.

    Hi Maarten! If you happen to see this, I would really appreciate your help. You mention in this video the X-S10 can do 4K and 4.2.2 in HDMI. Does this mean using an HDMI cable to connect to a monitor? When connected to a monitor, does it then record that higher option on the camera’s memory card, or do you need some sort of external recording to get the 4.2.2? I’m having a lot of trouble finding that info as a relative newbie. Also, does it really matter? I’m getting started with doing real estate photo and video. I have the X-S10 and a DJI Air 2S. I recently saw reviews of some monitors for the camera, but I don’t know if it’s helpful for the higher quality or if it will simply give me a bigger screen to look at. I hope the changes in your life are bringing you joy! Thanks!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you use the HDMI cable to connect to an HDMI monitor/recorder, it will have the ability to record using the higher settings. Those settings don't apply to internal recordings.
      No, it doesn't really matter unless you are doing high-end production with significant post production exposure/colour grading. Any video posted on-line will likely not benefit from those small enhancements.
      Have a look at Atomos devices, and yes, a larger screen (7") provides benefits in terms of detail, colour reproduction and focus - as those details can be missed on the lower quality LCDs provided on the camera.
      Thanks for your kind words and wishes.

    For those of us not familiar with all the labyrinths of this menu, please, please explain the rout to the settings. (OK, I'm a dummy, I confess). I've yet to find how to change from continuousto single, and back. It was SO simple on the x-t2, a nice thumb-accessible 'mode' dial. I miss it even though I often accidentally turned it. Brilliant video, thanks for posting. Have been an avid fuji user for sometime now and the layout of my XT3 AND XH1 suit my needs throughout. As well as being diagnosed with ASD I also struggle with my short term memory, so having the ISO, shutterspeed, etc quick to hand really suits me. I would be lying if I said that I am not a little bit worried about the new layout and also dedicating different dials to suit my photography. This film simulations are very good starting point for further tweeking and I'm impressed how this color management works. With Sony I always have an issue by transforming in sRGB for screen viewing. But when looking at the pictures taken with "outdated" previous cameras, it becomes obvious that there is still the ocean for improvement that has nothing to do with the camera or the lens. Great video as usual :)
    Question: when you are in Manual mode, is there an auto setting for SS so the camera can be used essentially like the other more traditional fuji bodies? Likewise, I assume that Auto for aperture works in Manual mode in a similar way.
    Another question, in Manual mode, the front dial controls Aperture. But what if the lens has an aperture dial and it is set to say 2.8. Can you still adjust the aperture with the front dial or is it fixed to 2.8?
    Thanks!

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can set shutter duration in manual (as demonstrated in the video). If you are using auto aperture, you are not in manual. If the dial icon appears above the aperture setting, it can be adjusted using the dial, which over-rides the manual setting.

    • @ibugama6420
      @ibugama6420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MaartenHeilbron yes, I understand that the SS can be set in Manual. What I was wondering is whether it can be set to Auto SS, which essentially makes it aperture priority but under Manual mode.
      What I like about the fuji dials is that you can be in essentially aperture priority by setting the SS to auto and then really quickly set a desired SS if the situation calls for that. I wonder if the xs10 can be used the same way.

    Thanks for sharing Maarten. I wonder why engineers can't make things simple. Simple menus with less options suit better to the majority of us. It's a nonsense to multiply menus, sub-menus etc... for useless options. I've just bought this camera but l'll go to the essential, just like with a film camera, and have fun with it and my 35 f:2.

    I love your videos, you provide a lot of precious information to us.
    I have been reading all the comments and replies to find a solution to all my doubts.
    I am a passionate photographer/videographer, I really love street photography and landscapes.
    I'd like to buy a camera and like many others, all the doubts are on X-T3, X-T4 and now X-S10.
    I know for good quality videos I will need a gimbal (so maybe the inbody stabilizer it's not a must).
    For still pictures do I really need the built-in stabilizer?
    I know that XT-4 (16-80mm)+ DJI Ronin-SC could be the best pick I can do.
    It is really worth it? or maybe XT-3 (16-80mm)+ DJI Ronin-SC, saving almost $1000 I can have the same results.

    Excellent review. I’ve had mine for a couple of days shooting a lot, and I really like it a lot. I agree with most everything you’ve said about what’s good and what needs to be improved.
    However, the camera has one annoyance that you didn’t mention. I’m constantly changing the exposure compensation accidentally because my thumb rests right on the rear command dial. It turns very easily, there’s no physical lock button, and I haven’t figured a way to turn it off or reassign it. Unless I’m missing something, this really needs to be addressed in a firmware update.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words. That didn't happen to me - but I know that from time to time I review a camera that I seem to mis-adjust while I'm in the early stages of familiarization. Hopefully either the firmware is changed (that dial should be assignable) or your muscle memory adapts.

    Thank you for your detailed and informative reviews. As a beginner, I definitely need practice to improve my skills, but my camera needs are not currently being met because I do yet own any equipment. :) I am looking to purchase my first ever camera/lens. My interest lies in nature/outdoor stills. Separate dials for ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed may be more user friendly to me than the button/screen combo. I like the feel and heft of the Fuji T4, but it may become heavy to use all the time and be more than I need to start out. The Fuji T30 felt comfortable at first, but as I held it longer, the small grip began to cause some hand discomfort. I then looked at the Fuji X S10 and liked several features but wished they had the same dials as the T30. I still need to touch and feel the Sony A6100 one more time for comparison. As this is a first purchase, I want to choose something that I can grow into and add quality lenses to as I go along. If the A6100 with both 16-50 mm and 55-210 mm lenses costs the same as the X S10 with a 16-80 mm lens, would you favor one over the other, or recommend I give the T30 or T4 another look over these two options?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      All are good choices, and as you point out, these are personal decision about dial and controls, weight and aesthetics. If your budget allows look at the X-T4 again and think about how you might manage the weigh issue you anticipate by using better or more comfortable straps and backpacks.
