What's the Dominican Republic Really Like? Family Welcomes Me to Home Outside Santo Domingo 🇩🇴

  • What's the Dominican Republic Really Like? Taking a day trip from Santo Domingo, I head north to remote Higuero, where I visit a rural village. I get fed an array of exotic food along with fruits, cacao, nuts and ice cream by a local Dominican family, before learning about the chocolate making process. I also stop in a Colmado and Comedor, soaking in a day in the life of people in the real Dominican Republic (República Dominicana).

I'm Jason, a full-time British Travel Vlogger and TH-camr who's been to 56 countries, travelling around the world full-time since 2017. So far, my trips have taken me to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
I have travel series' from many of the world's best (and least) known destinations. I filmed the first vlogs on my channel in the summer of 2016 after spending a year living in China. A solo trip around Eastern Europe followed, after graduating from University in the summer of 2017 - taking me to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Kosovo. This trip marked the start of my efforts to make TH-cam my full-time job.
I then went heavily into exploring Asia, visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan.
In recent years I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively, filming videos in Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Palestine.
To date, I have not yet been to Australasia or South America. Though I am hoping to visit the latter sometime in 2022.
I've travelled to North America just once as a TH-camr, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was when I was very young, going on family holidays.
So far in 2022, I've taken my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa, visiting both Kenya and Tanzania. The Middle East followed, stopping in Dubai and Lebanon. From there I made my way to Europe, covering both the Greek and Turkish sides of Cyprus, and afterwards going back to Italy for the second time to cover Milan and Sicily. I'm now in the Caribbean for the first time, exploring the Dominican Republic.

Nice video, I liked it. I dont know if you're taking recommendations but I recommend also going to Jarabacoa and Constanza, big mountains and hills, pine forests, and cool weather, definitely not what someone pictures the DR to be like. Puerto Plata is cool too, beautiful historic center and seafront.

That's how our campos (countryside) in Puerto Rico looked like back in the days.
Now...our campos are gradually disappearing😔, more like rural looking suburbs. No old style wooden homes outdoor bathrooms and kitchens. Only cinder block modern concrete homes.
    Food quite similar.
After Cuba's trip, Puerto Rico, then compare all 3 Caribbean Islands.😁
    Similarities and differences.👍✌️

The whole city is in front of a huge mountain that has a Christ on top (lowkey copycats of rio but we dont talk bout that haha)

This is a house in the countryside in a country where 80% of the people live in cities. Further research to see if slums are home to the majority of the population, but what is found that the vast msjority of Dominicans don't live in slums. This simpky shows that the real Dominican Republic is where most people live and those places are not the countryside or the slum areas of the cities.
    Anyway, nice video.

Not quite, I pass by my home (UK) in between a lot of my trips. But I’ve been travelling full-time for the last 5 years.

I am Dominican and I have never eaten algarrobo. That fruit is scarce, it does not reach Santo Domingo.

I was thinking of doing that but didn’t have a thing to hold it in place. I also left my chest mount at home - next time I’ll bring it!
