  • I leave Mombasa for Malindi in search of beaches further up the Swahili Coast in Kenya, taking local transport to get there.

    I'm Jason, a full-time British Travel Vlogger and TH-camr who's been to 52 countries. I've been travelling around the world full-time since 2017. So far, my trips have taken me to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
    I have travel series' from many of the world's best (and least) known travel destinations. I filmed the first vlogs on my channel in the summer of 2016 after spending a year living in China. A proper solo trip around Eastern Europe followed after graduating from University in the summer of 2017, taking me to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Kosovo. This trip marked the start of my efforts to make a TH-cam full-time job.
    After that European trip I went heavily into exploring Asia, visiting India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Kazakhstan (seeing me cover a lot of Far East and Southeast Asia in particular).
    I have also travelled to North Africa and the Middle East fairly extensively over the last five years, filming videos in Turkey, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Palestine.
    To date, I have not yet been to Australasia or South America. Though I am hoping to visit the latter sometime in 2022, along with a first stop in the Caribbean.
    I've travelled to North America just once as a TH-camr, visiting Mexico in 2021. Though I have been to both the USA and Canada, this was only as a child on family holidays.
    I have just begun my first trip to Sub Saharan Africa in 2022, starting in Kenya.

    I love your expression when you're surrounded by the 'intense' mutatu drivers and I guess many travellers can relate: the frustration of just wanting to take a bus without being hassled, making sure that you're not getting scammed or that your luggage doesn't go astray in the process.... but at the same time remaining calm and polite, understanding that those people are just there to make a living 😄 Anyway, Kenya looks really interesting, thanks for taking us along!

    You should have gone to the Safaricom office to sign up. You need to present your passport. It is as easy as getting a local SIM-card.

    • @aishab8022
      @aishab8022 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mpesa is the most convenient option of payment when you come to Kenya. I think Its a good tip to give tourists just as they land Kenya to open an mpesa account, When purchasing a sim card.

    • @whatsupsweden
      @whatsupsweden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aishab8022 Definitely. Tourists are so used to paying by card, which is not a big thing in Kenya, unless at a mall or big supermarket. If there was a way to link the card with mpesa, I think more tourists would go for it. Having to go to deposit cash could be a bit of a hassle for some. They could have agents at hotels and at the airport, helping tourists to sign up.

    • @esem135
      @esem135 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@whatsupsweden You can signup at the airport as you enter Kenya. Pretty simple. If not, you just walk into any Safaricom, Airtel shop and they'll set you up.

    • @whatsupsweden
      @whatsupsweden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@esem135I never realized they had one at the airport cus I usually enter at night. I guess it is not open by then. I go to City Mall in Mombasa and stand in a long queue. If they would upgrade from USSD codes to fully app based then it would be also easier to access from abroad.

    I live most of the year in Mtwapa but spend a lot of time in Malindi.
    Malindi used to have a lot of Italians (hence the moniker "Little Italy"). Many of them desperately tried to sell their properties in 2013-2014 as the crisis had hit Italy. Many lost their dreams there and especially their savings. It was and still is a bit of a ghost town since that time.
    Matatu, before Covid, from Mtwapa to Malindi, was 300 sh. Now it is 600 sh. And will probably go up even further due to fuel shortage everywhere (and the usual suspects always making money on crisis in Kenya).
    Going towards Tsavo from Malindi you pass near by Chakama, some 40 km off Malindi. The ticket with bus/matatu used to be 300 sh, then 600 and now it is 800 sh.
    So I suggest ..... you guys go to Tanzania. Cheaper and less corrupt.
    And Malindi really isn't a nice town. It desperately needs a make-over. It is dirty and not very charming .... unless you close your eyes snd try to imagine what it could be like if people (local government) cared.
    But lovely beaches though ...

    Actually there are literally hundreds of these accomodations in Kenyas coast. They refer to them as Villas. In Malinidi there are almost 1500 villas mainly owned by the italians may be jason will explain the Malindi and Italian connection. malindi is known as "Little Italy" si jason can not go to malindi and not do his research on the itlalian influence in malindi. So you are spoilt for choice in accomoadations in Kenyas coast from north to south

    Yikes, prices have really hiked. Last I travelled fare to Malindi was 300/-. Plus you shouldn't have given that guy who took your bag any money, that's extortion since you didn't ask for his help. And you're brave, filming like that with the windows open. You passed by my hometown of Kilifi.
    Glad you enjoyed your time!

    He gave you a really good seat in the matatu, so not suprised he didnt scam you. The only place not good to sit is next to the doors. Especially with a lot of stops. Then perhaps your paid seat needs to be shared with the condoctor or other travelers going for a short ride. Then using the seat belt is out of the question too. So in the back next to a window that you can control yourself - being opened or closed is a perfect seat👍

    Thanks for the movie. Last year I was in Watamu, this year I'm going to Malindi. Beautiful country, tuk tuk like in Thailand, some buildings with the same architecture as in the old districts of Arab Emirates. It's nice to watch these movies several times. I need to find this villa in Malindi, I'll take a picture of Villa Fortuna there. After watching this movie, I realized how much I miss this country. Greetings from Poland!👌🌹

    Btw be careful with boda boda right now… there was an incident in Nairobi at Womensday. A lady caused an accident with one of them and a whole group of boda bodas attacked her after. The main problem was that the boda boda did not have insurance so the president announced that all boda bodas get checked by police. If you want to use boda boda currently let them show you the PSV insurance (square printout in platic holder) and the driving license, just check that name is same and plates of the boda match the insurance. Could prevent you from spending a night in jail and loosing a lot of money.

      @B45 I live in Kenya, what are you talking about? Don't be ignorant, come visit and see for yourself. Documentaries and News about Africa only show the negative side, there is a positive side which out ways the negative that they will never show you.
