Well I’ve just taken the carbs off for a good clean for the fourth time and it is still popping and spluttering at 4000 revs, unless I put the choke on and then she’s off like a banshee. I’m going back in the garage in the morning and will check for the plug 🤞 Great video. Thanks.
Thanks so much for this. Had exactly the same issue on my 1994 Pegaso 650. I’ve had the head off and shimmed valves, carb off countless times. I watched you’re vid, blanked it off and sorted the issue. So chuffed! Cheers
The plug I think should lead to a long solid tube (vacuum) that went to an accessory chain oiler. My F650 had one, would occasionally run like absolute crap and thats what it was. Melted a piece of plastic into the end of it. Been fine for 4 years/50k since!
This was an exiting vid! I have same problem on my funduro. My bike is stored away now, but I will definitely check out this solution! I hope this is the problem, because I have had this problem for a year and nobody can sort it out.
Got a similar problem on my f650. After about 5 miles it pops on hard throttle, then settles down. Suspect a coil pack or lead, but will change them ( bought some second hand ones to try) and new Iridium plugs. If that fails it's time to check the carbs. Very useful video. Thanks.
Thanks so much for your upload. It's really helpful. I've got a suzuki DR800 with the same carb, and have similar problems. Went the same diagnostic route (including the coils) and am similarly frustrated about not being able to run the bike for weeks (!)...
Had the same problem. This video will help me. I did the factory 2.5 turns will dial it to 4.5 turns and measure the resistance in the ohms. And clean the choke thing. Mine didnt like being stored over the winter with 95 leadfree that has E10 10% etanol. Now all cleaned up changed gaskets and orings running on 98 oktan starts on the button but must have choke so will do the 4.5 turns and i think this will sort out the issue. Thanks again for this video 👍Dealership here in Norway qouted me £1500 to clean and set up the carbs! Robbing barstools. Done it all myself abit of a job getting the carbs off lol dismantled the thing so many times now i can do it in my sleep. I love the bike Great sound and a Great sitting position🏍️
I have just finished restoring a 1994 Pegaso, had exactly the same symptoms as yourself, had them on and off the bike but then I found you video, had a check on mine and my heart dropped the tube was still there but i remembered you said it was a plug, mine had a pipe from the open entry (where the plug should be)round to the same sealed entry on the second carb where I found the pipe not attached, removed the pipe and sealed the open entry as you did and the bike runs as sweet as a nut, thanks pete
PETE WAINWRIGHT I,m glad this vid helped you solve your problem, I could,nt find the information I needed , so I made this vid to help the pegaso family out.. thanks for your feedback. cheers :)
@@petewain61 its running good on idle, the jets where clothed. The only problem now is the carb settings, air fuel screw 4 1/2 right? And the idle mix screw? And i see also that my peggy is only running with choke fully on. I replaced by the wat all the rubbers.
Excellent video thanks for the help, my motor runs perfect but when the bike is going to temperature the stationair is getting lower that it almost wants to shut off.
Super helpful! Thank you. I’ve just bought a non-running ‘97 bmw f650 with similar carb setup. You might have saved my some hair ripping out. I’ll keep an eye out for that air passage and the fixed pilot (not sure if the f650’s had that, too).
Hi Pete - after many months of trying to figure what was wrong with my 2000 pegaso i came across this video. Bike had been running well but started to run really rough as revs increased. Cleaned carbs and checked all ignition system all ok. Jets all clean no issues. Watched video and went to check for missing bung. On mine there was a thin open tube running along my top sub frame from the carb outlet. This was supposed to act as some sort of vacuum pipe for a chain scottoiler system that had been removed leaving an open pipe. So going to seal it up and retry - I will post my results - fingers crossed.
Well - after all this time just to update you all that asked - this hasn't sorted my problem - the bike is still sat in my garage waiting to be fixed. I will persevere and let you know if it ever runs right again.
Hi, thnx for the video! Is it possible to change the ignition cable on this coil? It screws in into the coil the same way it does into spark plug cap? What's the best method to start this bike wen hot? Throttle, no throttle, choke, no choke?
Could you elaborate on the spark restrict or, is it not for the redline/ignition cut. Mine is an F650, which is mostly same engine, but 4v head instead of 5v, and then twin spark plugs instead of the 5th valve. But everything else much the same. Never had a spark issue, it goes very gentle on its spark plugs, never really had an issue. About to rebuild carbs again (needles will be worn from a lot of miles) and spotted that jumper/resistor sat on the plug. Haven't measured it yet, you say 'restricted' is 4ohm, and full is 9ohm?
4 1/2 turns on the idle jet due to the blocked off pilot jet. I'll try that later today. My AP has the exact same carbs I was wondering why these pilot jets were blocked. I've been working on my bike on and off for 9 months.
Hi,pete I had the same problem as you,I contacted you thanking you for your help, can you remember the air screw settings,I think the standard settings make the bike run lean, any help would be great, regards pete
Actually they are not airscrews but right the opposite, they are fuel screws. Factory setting of them is 3 turns out. For mine one that's the perfect tune, neither lean nor rich.
Hi, just trying to do some research on the Aprilia as I’m thinking of buying one, do you think you might be able to give me your opinion of it please? Thanks
I have just tried to start my peg after sitting outside all winter. Not getting fuel through so I am going to be in the same position. Clean it all down then start working through it.....

See this guy, and note the red plug on his mikunis th-cam.com/video/d6ZCSoyj7bo/w-d-xo.html What is that small pipe for, though? It's all well and good blocking it off, but Mikuni made it for a reason. This is very similar to the BMW F650 I have and, as you say, good bike when running, but they can be a pain in the arse tracking a fault down when running badly. Voltage regulators, batteries and even the plug caps on the BMW can cause problems.
take the rear panels off , undo the exhausts etc , take the two bolts out at the top front of the subframe, then push the subframe back , there is enough room to get the carbs off. good luck !
