*Watch: (Almost) Every RAV Drum combination: • (Almost) Every RAV Dru...
The modern steel pan instruments know as handpans are growing in popularity due to their beautiful harmonic resonance and wide range of applications as hand percussion instruments. In this video we compare a Hang (Invented in 2001 by PanArt, the originators of the handpan) and a RAV Drum (invented in 2013).
The Handpan or “hang” is a convex steel drum played with the hands and tuned with multiple notes. Each handpan is tuned to a particular scale such as major, natural minor, harmonic minor, hijaz, mixolydian, etc. Sonically the handpan is an overtone-emitting instrument that has the capacity to create many layers of sound and ethereal effects and works very well with drone instruments. Originally called the hang (pronounced “hah-ng”) the handpan was invented in 2001 by a little company in Switzerland. The instrument has fantastic resonance, overtones, and subtle variations in sounds beyond the tonal field base keys and can be played upside like an African Udu. Handpans are rare instruments with very few makers and even fewer makers that make quality instruments so it is a very expensive instrument and difficult to obtain one.
The Hang scale used in this demo is tuned to the D Hijaz scale

RAV Drum (aka RAV Vast) is a revolutionary new instrument that fuses the concepts behind handpans (hang drums) and tongue drums (traditionally made of wood). Perfectly cut steel tongues vibrate harmoniously together to create an ethereal sound perfect for meditation, relaxation, and other mystical music experiences. RAV was invented in 2013 in Russia. Conceptually the RAV uses cut keys as opposed to the hammer tuned Hang drum, which is not cut or welded in anyway. The RAV has a deep resonance and profound reverb effects where the sound lasts for a long time while the Hang drum sound goes for a much shorter duration. This allows for a lot more space between key strokes in the RAV because the sound carries so long without losing the rhythm, which can make for more experimental playing in some respects than the Hang or handpan. The fullness of the sound and the duration of each key stroke makes the instrument very meditative to play because it renders itself to slow playing but of course can also be played very quickly and rhythmically. The backside of the RAV is not as accessible or resonant as a handpan but can still be played rhythmically. The price of a RAV is 1/3 the cost of a Hang and is also generally easier to play than the Hang for most people. It is also a much more durable and sturdy instrument. The handpan can be knocked out of tune with too hard of a hit and over time may need to get tuned up regardless while the Rav does not and is almost impossible to knock out of tune.
The RAV Drum scale used in this demo is tuned to the G Minor Pentatonic scale
    Purchase RAV here: didgeproject.com/product/rav-v...

Everyone has their preferences. Personally, I like the sound of the RAV better. One thing not mentioned in the video is you sometimes have to be careful if playing a handpan in a sunny area. As the metal heats up it expands and can throw the instrument out of tune ( till it cools back down ). With a RAV you really don't have to worry about it ever going out of tune.. Just something to consider

The hand pan sounds more nuanced, inharmonic, dissonant percussive and exotic, the totality of the effect is haunting, The tonged pan sounds more direct, harmonic, consonant, sustained and familiar, the totality of the effect is restful. The first is better for the spirit of exploration and adventure, the second is best for a spirit of comfort and safety. I would switch between both as needed depending on mood.

Just cheapies...well $200 Australian cheap but sounds magical. Best played with the included rubber ended hammers. Easy enough for a 2 year old....easy enough for my 40 yr old arse! 😀

I get the rav's idea but the handpan to me has such a more natural sound than the almost mechanical sound to the rav. Even the overtones still don't resonate naturally like the hand pan does. The handpan has a smoother sound to me all together.

    • @markuspeitl
      @markuspeitl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

If you play a RAV less like a drum and more like you would play on a piano, hitting it with only the flesh of your fingertips and mainly on the end of the steel tongues the sound can be much more smooth and natural than demonstrated in this video where it is played more percussively.
It also really depends on the model and series, when i compare the older RAV models in the same scale with newer ones they do sound very different and have other sound properties (i think the metallic sound is'nt as noticeable in newer models).
I do like both though. In my opinion handpans have these deep hard hitting resonance on the root note to them and RAVs have this watery long slow buildup of resonance.

I love how they get their own pillows. They are quite expensive. I've been wanting to know the absolute differences between the two so, thank you. I don't want to invest in something that doesn't deliver the same expression. Appreciated.

RAV Drum sounds so AWESOME that I want to learn to play it.

I still prefer Hang pan to Hav drum. Even though there’s shorter resonance in hang pan, it makes us feel immersed within it. The lengthy resonance of Hav drum didn’t actually create a better impact than the Hang pan.

There's something else behind the actual note on the Handpan that really sets it apart from the Rav, I was hoping it would be closer in tone, because I'm not rich! And I was about to buy a Rav, but the more videos I see I really want the Handpan. There's so many other noises you can make by hitting between the notes. And that sound behind the note is just so pleasing to me. Guess I'll be saving a while longer.

Beautiful sounds and drums. Such a pity they are so expensive. Even the RAV, is out of reach for me, at the moment. Alas! Thx for the demo. 👍

Really appreciate your insight. I got a D Didgeridoo and would love to add a hang to it. Which scale would you recommend?
