love these... keep em coming! I have often cut a small opening for small beads but never thought to refine the shape further by rubbing it in a groove... Genius!
Sir, You are terrific. Succinctly explained everything. I’m an unskilled woman who couldn’t get the new silicone to flow. I figured it was blocked but that dumb metal thingy that comes on the caulk gun is too thick. You showed me the way. Paper Clip! Thank you and bless you. Lynne
I am not a carpenter ! Just ended up here by accident ! But watched the video ! A really good video ! You see a craftsman who cares ! Something that is rare !
I'm commenting on your video via my mom's TH-cam account-(because I don't have my own account) However; I just wanted to say thank you for teaching me how to cut caulk like a pro. I've seen my dad using a caulking gun when I was a little girl but never had the opportunity to learn how to use one myself
I know this sounds crazy, but as a 25 year old cosplayer, I'd never thought I'd need this tutorial, but I did. You explained and showed everything so clearly, including how to run it. Thank you so much for showing others how to do this. ❤
All of my caulking jobs look horrible. Between this and the tip to use painters tape to rein in caulk squeeze out, I might be able to make a decent bead the next time I have to use the stuff. Thanks!
This video was genuinely very useful, sadly I’m watching this the day after I done my DIY but nontheless this will be very useful to know for the future :) thank you!
The membrane in the tube is always a pain in the ass to deal with. Fortunately, we don't have any in Europe, no matter what type of caulk/glue we use, which makes our lives a little bit easier... Good tip, although if you need a very small amount of caulk along an edge, two coats of any decent acrylic paint will do the job with no caulk at all.
Thank God I watched a couple of 'how to caulk videos' on TH-cam before I actually attempted it all over my house, I Can Only Imagine the mess I would have made haha
Thanks Bernie! I used my Saramonic SR-WM4C Wireless Lavalier for this video. They're pretty good for the price. But there was a little bit of time getting the levels right. amzn.to/2Ajhb7C
They should have softer silicone tips. Or use an olive oil pour top as a tip. Maybe oil over calculating now. I think I might start doing trim with an icing tip and make it cake like 👍🏻 LOL
You can buy cheap caulk, that mock up is a great way to get you technique down. Don't think i'll be doing the just cut it thing anymore. Good one, everyone will have to do this sooner or later.
@@Makebuildmodify Thanks I didn't get that far. I stopped when you were already using it. Unfortunately my caulking gun doesn't have the built in spike, so I'll have to try a paper clip like you did.
Yup, there are a lot of instances where that cutter will work. But when it's really accurate work you need a way to have more control. Thanks for watching!
Hey quit giving away my secrets! This is the first time I've seen someone cut a tip exactly the way I do. No one taught me how to do it I guess it was just common sense.
The tube probably has a membrane located down inside the tip. It's usually near the body of the tube. You can use a long thin piece of metal to puncture it. Some caulking guns have a fold out needle for just this application.
They do sell it in pails. As a professional caulker we use hundreds of pails a year with bulk caulking guns. They work far better, but are not practical for the homeowners or DIY
I know how to cut the tip off the nozzle. However, the piercing rod on the caulking gun isn’t long enough to pierce the plastic end of the tube with the nozzle is in. NO ONE seems to want to show how to deal with getting the plastic bit off the top of the tube.
You are totaly wrong man the way you hold the gun to the way you cut the tips alway 90 with the run and 45 with the gap you fil ... tip should be cut at 85 degrees
@@Makebuildmodify On caulk for trim it isn't a bad idea, but on a bath or kitchen application, touching the caulk/silicone with your finger actually ruins it and adds bacteria, thins the material and doesn't allow it wo stretch or provide the amount of material to protect the joints and introduces ridges and valleys for the mold and mildew to build up.

Thanks Dave! I've been wearing the shirt you gave me. It's tough to find good shirts in XLT.
I’ve watched tons of uselesss videos. Man, this man right here taught me everything I needed in just seconds, you’re the best!!
Wow, thanks!
Great pointer! Especially as I have a handyman job that will be requiring me to caulk the base of the bathtub and two sinks.
Glad to to hear it. Don't be afraid to do a little trial and error to get the right shaped tip.
April 25,2019, just found this. Instant subscriber and look forward to seeing what other videos are in the series.
Awesome! Thanks for the sub!!
Great tip! Next time I do trim it’s going to be way better.
You bet. Thanks for watching!

Dude, thanks! That membrane silliness was messing with my head.
Haha! You're welcome. I can see how that would be maddening.
You bloody beauty! What a great tip!

Interesting. You're right, there is a point where there's no need for caulking at all.
Thanks for the paperclip tip; I tried that before but probably wasn't the right size. The one on the guns always seems to be way too big.
You're welcome!
Nice tip!
Gee golly, Thanks!
Thx, cutting the tip like that really made a difference and I used sandpaper to define the tip.
Excellent!
I appritiate the tips very helpful

I'll have to try this method. Looks like it'll save on caulk.
It Does! Thanks for watching!

perfect tip!!!!!! a very good one!
Thanks Lucas!
Perfecto sr. I like fist your attitude and paciencia
¡gracias por ver!
I used OSI gutter sealant recently, and it was hard as hell to squeeze out even after breaking the seal for whatever reason.
Yeah, sometime it's not very easy to get it to work.
nice job...thank you great information...
You bet. Thanks for watching!

Maybe oil over calculating now. I think I might start doing trim with an icing tip and make it cake like 👍🏻 LOL
There are better tip "solutions" on the market. However, none of them compare to practice while using the methods in this video.
What small tool do you use to puncture the seal?
An unfolded paper clip works well.

Good video.

great info thanks
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
that was brilliant
Thanks Dave!
I wonder if cutting at a 45 like normal than running a little pencil sharpener around it would create this (?)
Hmmmm... I haven't tried it. Might work. Testing is the only way to know.
Can we talk about your thumb for a second. What?!
Ha! I cut it pretty bad about 15 years ago. I think the knife in this video was the culprit. It's never grown the same since.
I was going to mention the thumbnail, too. I was going to suggest you find a better way to test the sharpness of your chisels.
Lol!
Beat me to it! Lol
Lol yes I was thinking he missed a couple of nails (nail bed clearly took a couple of shots)
In Australia the nosil is not on the tube. We cut the end of the tube with the blade then screw the nosil on. So you can always replace the nosil
Very interesting. We have a few like that here in the US. But they are not typical. Thanks for the info!
Tajima caulking guns are the bees knees!
Great tip!
Thanks
You bet!
Forgot to cap the tip with a wire nut for storage ;-)
Good Tip!
I usually put a Brad nail or small screw in the tip and then a wire nut on top.
Thanks god bless
Always welcome
How do you cut the inside as well?
At 3:06 in the video shows that.
@@Makebuildmodify Thanks I didn't get that far. I stopped when you were already using it. Unfortunately my caulking gun doesn't have the built in spike, so I'll have to try a paper clip like you did.
@@Anonymous-qw No problem. Good luck!
I just use the blade that's included on my gun. Either way works for me tbh

Hey quit giving away my secrets! This is the first time I've seen someone cut a tip exactly the way I do. No one taught me how to do it I guess it was just common sense.
I would say uncommon sense. I'm glad to hear that someone else is using this technique too.
How come when you cut the tip off it still doesn’t come out sometimes?
The tube probably has a membrane located down inside the tip. It's usually near the body of the tube. You can use a long thin piece of metal to puncture it. Some caulking guns have a fold out needle for just this application.
i wish they sold silicone caulk in pails, i hate how hard to expel it feels in culk guns
It's not too bad after you learn how.
I cover it here: 3:06
The thing that no one shows, possibly because it is thought too obvious, is that you also need to cut off the tip of the tube above the screw thread.
Wish I watched your video before someone else's who was as useless as my skills. 😂 A pinky size hole later...🤦🏻♀️
Lol!
This video is so good it made my pants tight!
Ha! The first caulk joke. I was waiting for it.....;)
That damn membrane
Haha!
You are totaly wrong man the way you hold the gun to the way you cut the tips alway 90 with the run and 45 with the gap you fil ... tip should be cut at 85 degrees
Where's your video?
Ok why not just snip the end til the hole barely shows 😂 this is over complicated sir
I'm not so sure you would say that after trying both method. There's an obvious winner.
😅😅😅😅
Man, You had it perfect. Then you used your finger and ruined a perfect bead.
Personal preference.
@@jmackinjersey1 I disagree, but that's okay. We can each have our own way of doing it.
@@Makebuildmodify That is true.
that's the worst Stanley blade ever lol
It's my favorite!
Yeah but none of those seams even need caulking, maybe you could show real world app ?
Do you mean a joint with a visible crack?
SLOW
But good.
