Don't use anything to plug the used tube. Just squeeze out a quarter inch of material and let it dry. It forms its own protective plug in the nozzle, then you grab the dried tail and pull it out when you use it next.

Thanks buddy!

I’ve been doing the rubber tubing trick for about 30 years, learned it on a show called “This Old House”. I loved that show. I would love to watch every episode
I am always fearful of doing new things because I think I will be unsuccessful, the info you have given in this video really helps me know that I can caulk now without making a mess and I really appreciate this! Always fantastic videos, thank you!
You can honestly cut the tube, spray what you want or tool it how you may.....the real test is the size of hole on the spout end, the thrust ratio of the caulk gun and the angle/speed at which you run your bead. Smear away boys and dont forget to wipe it on your jeans🙂👍
I learned the hard way about the soapy water/alcohol trick. It works by keeping the silicone from sticking, but that works both ways. That is, if during application, the silicone doesn't totally contact both surfaces, when sprayed, the liquid can get under and behind the silicone, and then it won't stick. I think that's why you see pros putting on way too much in order to ensure nothing gets under or behind it.
Nothing worse than crap music blaring through a video (not everyone will like the directors choice of music, I turn they videos off instantly, shame as well as some of the items look like they could be cool, Talk us through the build or the tips don't bombard us with soul destroying music)
@@snelgrave101 100%...it seems to be a 'thing' on youtube, to have music (normally crap music too) playing while someone is narrating a clip, I suffer with tinnitus, and having 'music' playing at the same time as someone speaks means I hear three different things, really annoying
Never had an issue, 35 years ago and old timer showed me how to use a damp tile sponge corner and my lines always are clean and professional. But more ways to do one thing are never bad to know.
To get a perfect silicon or any other sealant line, all you have to do is press the middle finger of your left hand down on the nozzle tip as you draw it along and you pump the gun with your right hand, or vice versa. The sealant is forced well into the gap by your finger pressure and there is nothing to clean up afterwards. The only slight drawback is that you need to use both hands as you make your sealant line and occasionally this can be awkward if there is not enough room. You also have to clean your finger regularly, and you have to watch out for splinters or sharp bits in the material you are sealing, (e.g. laminates) which can nick your finger as it moves along the joint. I invented this technique and have used it for many years as a handyman and painter. It is by far the fastest and neatest way to apply sealant from a gun.
You "invented" the trick that all caulkers use to get a finished bead without taping? Its called a "speed bead", it's been around longer than we've been alive pal.
@@dee.f88 Okay, I went too far claiming I invented it. But I never learnt it from anyone. And I have to say that none of the many tradesmen that I introduced this method to over many years had heard of it before or worked it out for themselves. Which is surprising, seeing how easy and obvious it is. As for your claim that it has been around longer than we have been alive, well, maybe you but not me. Caulking guns and tube/nozzle delivered caulking materials were not in general use when I was a young man, that's for sure. It was all putty and elbow grease. Silicone? Not.
@@bernarddavis1050 your rebuttal was respectable. Valid points, a fair argument and even acknowledged your wrongdoing in the exaggerated claim of inventing the speed bead. I respect you and will not trouble you with any more unnecessary comments.
I've never heard of that technique or seen it done either, sounds like a cracking idea. I use a lot if caulk too, I wonder if it will work for that too.....
O my god, this was the BEST video on caulking I've seen! No long-ass talking while I'm waiting for someone to get to the point. And the tips are genius!, they were so in front of me, I'm mad at myself for not thinking of them. Good job!
I have caulked items for over 35 years and I have to admit I learned a ton of things brand new from you. Congratulations for teaching an old dog new tricks and thank you for making this video!
Though I don't know you, I respect you for this. Working 35 years in any industry would automatically grand you title of "Master" The sheer fact of you admitted that you've learned something after all those years is incredible! Hats off to you, truly. 👏
I have found with cauking that the key is to insure the caulk penetrates the seam. Therefore once the caulk is applied exterior pressure should be applied to the caulk to force it into the seam. I will not be critical of anyone else's methods however for me non water soluable caulks I find look the best by taping off the seam with painters tape. Applying a large bead of caulk pushing it in with my finger or a forming tool coated with windex ,keeping a waste container nearby while using paper towels to wipe excess caulk off my finger or tool and quickly disposing of the paper towels not allowing too much silicone or other non water soluable caulks to get all over me or the area I am caulking. Then pulling the painters tape working from top to bottom and disposing it in the waste container as it is pulled off in a carefull and smooth manner. For water soluable I use a damp rag and a bucket of water with some fine tools such as a nail punch and a damp cloth to neaten up the corners. I follow the same method only do not tape off surfaces except on occasion and use the damp cloth to wipe off excess. Caulk. To each there own and I am certain some of you guys are excellent free hand caulkers so I respect your technique if it works good for you and you end up with a neat and stable seam. Cleaning your caulk seam is very helpful and using alcohol for the final wipe down will help because it drys rapidly. On old tubs and wet areas cleaning thoroughly is a must before alcohol wipe down. Using a razor blade scraper or painters tool to dig out old caulk before you begin your cleaning process .Having a shop vac handy to suck all the fine debris out of the work area and the tub or drain area helps alot and taping off the drain below where you are working or covering it in some manner is always wise.
If you cut the tip perpendicular and drag it with the gun going ahead, you get a convex bead with irregularities depending on how consistent you apply pressure on the handle. If you hold the gun perpendicular to the direction of travel, you get something like a chamfer shaped bead, with better filling of the root because you can force the material directly into the corner. If you run the gun pointing slightly in the direction of travel, you get a concave bead which runs tangent into the adjacent surfaces and has the best bang for buck ratio. If you keep your pressure and the angle of the gun somewhat consistent, you always get the same cross section based on the tip shape. And the root is filled because you're pushing the material into the corner.
This guy knows. I always think the spray bottle is a bad idea as well as it runs behind the silicone then smearing it after meaning it won’t adhere properly to the tiles. Your better off using a stick that’s been soaked in washing up liquid.
@@Georgous92 Yeah never spray, only dab the tool in soapy water. And prepare the surfaces by cleaning (remove dust and grease) and maybe roughing them up a little with sanding paper if necessary, depending on the materials involved.
You can get cake decorating tools which are basically stainless balls on a little shaft so after spraying soapy water they leave a perfect consistency no matter the angle of the tool. I used it everyday for years.
Yes this or just apply silicone perfectly by having the gun at an angle and cutting the nozzle at an angle. It leaves it perfect too and is much faster, but requires some practice.
@@TheFrontyer It depends on the length of the bead and application. I used to make gfrc kitchen counter tops and the silicone had to have a perfectly consistent over many metres. Nearly impossible to get that perfect when you are physically walking along the form and having to trigger the gun a few times. Not to mention getting 4 tight matching corners.
@@Jim-yk9zw I have applied probably 20-30 meters of silicone in one stretch without issue. But that was down at the floor so smaller incosistensies are not visible unless you lay down. On a kitchen I would definetly use a tool and soapy water afterwards, as incostistensies are more visible.
@@TheFrontyer I imagine many commercial applications of siloconing wouldn't expect perfect joints even though as you said, it is possible to get it quite nice. Half the time non tradies or the clients in those situations wouldn't even know what they were looking at to expect the cleanest joint. I have seen some absolute dogs breakfasts on some sites in the past though.
Why not just use a proper caulk spatula? A ball-shaped tool only allows a specific bead size. With a proper tool, you get adjustability In spreading out the bead correctly, regardless of irregularities in the surface or your ability to apply a perfect bead.
I worked as a contractor doing in tank sealing on the global 7000 aircraft at bombardier. Really tight areas using 2 mirrors for visual, and if you messed up you just cleaned it up and re did it. I mainly worked as a structural airframe assembler drilling, riveting and that kinda stuff so mistakes were costly. Sealing is kind of therapeutic and satisfying as the kids would say. I'd just listen to music and have at it, unfortunately those kind of sealants were very carcinogenic and I worked in a gas tank essentially with Isopropyl alcohol to clean but ive used all 4 of these methods, even used mold release and created the seal on a workbench then put some seal around the point of contact and it worked great, it was just to hard to get 360 degree access when the part was installed
PUSHING the bead forces material into the joining. PUSHING allows me to see the depth and mounding. PUSHING uses the shape of the nozzle to shape the bead. PUSHING creates a wide deep long-lasting moisture barrier. . This video demonstrates variations of PULLING the bead. PULLING the bead applies a surface coat, without penetration into the joining. PULLING the bead creates gaps for moisture to accumulate.
That’s the problem, to many people just dribble the silicone in gap for fear of an unclean able mess. You really got to gun it into the gap. Then knife of the excess as shown in the video. The wet finger is the final finish. One other technique I was shown to do after finishing is to throw dry tile grout over the bead.
thank you for all these tricks! Is there anywhere video showing how to seal old windows with only thinnl irregular gaps from 0 to 3 mm betwenn the window and the frame. with silikon out of the tube?; I've read a description on the Internet, but I doubt that it looks nice afterwards and I'd like to see an example how to do it . Because if you use their adhesive stripes this results mostly in a window that can only be closed by force. Thank you very much.
If sealing under a door/patio doors but very close to ground just force the nozzle to a 45 angle before pumping gun, if nozzle already full of silicone be sure to hold on to nozzle as you force the bend as it can shoot off its thread. Most nozzles already have tiny hole so don't even need cutting for very small gaps, then gradually re cutting as needed and squeeze out quarter inch when finished to seal the tube then just pull out the set silicone next time. If no nozzles at all and gap not too small just pump the tube along gap and tool it in. Don't keep throwing away used nozzles, when set push the silicone out with long thin screwdriver it'll pull out clean as a whistle.
The first way works fine you just cut the hole too big putting too much caulk on so that it squishes out the sides of your finger. I use a case of caulk at a time painting houses.
I've been cutting the end a caulking tube on an angle for over 20 plus years and your right he did cut it to big. But it's always nice to learn new ways but ill keep doing it the old way. 💯👍
Ok, hold up, could you explain the last caulking trick? You cut the V-notch out of the long end of the angled cut off of the tip of the tube, then face it upwards as you pull it sideways, how is that preventing it from overfilling?
Yes I spend 30plus years in glass industry....learn all these triks by doing it.....only practical, wish u were thr to show it early....thx for posting such wonderful video
I use a wet micro towel to run along the baseboard to pick up the mess of silicone left and my line always comes out perfect. Thank you for the other way to use silicone.
Absolutely some very great tips here! When my ex and I started building home, decks and basement remodels together he always had me do the caulking. The first time he saw me with my finger in it to spread it evenly and smoothly he about had a cow! But after checking it over and seeing how nice it looked he stopped telling me , " knock it off, you aren't here to frost cakes!" It wasn't long before l caught him with his finger in it too!" Thanks for the great tips!! Peace to all.....💜💙💜
If one is a homeowner and only needs to use caulking occasionally and assuming you desire to have that tube last as long as possible, whew! The you really also need to seal over the big end too. Depending on the caulking and how it's stored, this can keep the contents viable for much, much longer. Ya, I know yada yada. But take a look up the tube sometime and not infrequently you will see scrapings of caulking. This happens when you have applied pressure and sometimes a little squirts out. So this means there is no perfect seal, thus allowing oxygen to get in and that will start cause the contents to harden. By sealing off the big end after use, less oxygen can reach the pushing plug? I simply cut a section out of a shopping bag, enough to cover and extend up the outside of the tube 2" or so then use electrical tape in the middle. Try it sometime I think you will surprised.
The best way to seal a tube is just squeeze out a little excess at the tip and let it dry. Seals the tube . Won't last forever but it will last several weeks to a month if it's not a cheap caulk.
So I see that you basically cut a small plastic V in the end of the caulking tube at the tip but to me it wasn’t super clear if the V part is flat against the bottom or also on top surface when applying the caulk? I’m guessing the top?
For years a buddy and I installed trim. He would always caulk our work to ensure quality and help the painters. I decided one day I would help out. The next day the painter pulled him aside and said : I know your buddy is trying to help, but please don't allow him anywhere near a caulk gun. It will take us hours to fix the mess he made. We still laugh about that and I'm still not allowed near a caulk gun. It's harder than it looks.
Instead of dragging the tip, and leaving a superficial bead, I use the gun perpendicular with a square cut tip, or pointing towards the direction of travel for deep joint penetration (and less in top, where it can shrink.
@@hc3d silicone is the easiest to use indoors for a high quality long lasting seal. You can use painters caulk anywhere you plan on having paint, but unpainted it will dry out and discolor. There are many construction sealants that can be used and left exposed, but none that I can think of that tool as easily as silicon. Most other sealants that will do the job are going to require a solvent such as paint thinner to tool out.
Yaaaasss!!!!!! Exactly!!!! Me toooo!!!!!!! An old painter in the trades showed me that several years ago... and I've been spreading the news and the caulk ever since...... I can caulk wall angle trim for an acoustical grid ceiling, walking stilts , around a school room. In about 2 minutes and less than 1 tube of caulk..... most guys push a baker scaffold around the room with a roll of paper towels, it takes them an hour and 4 or 5 tube of caulk... and swear they're the best caulker in the world... but thats union work ....I guess..😆
@@hc3d plumbers like Poly seamseal because it trims out quick. I often use silicone for toilet to floor seam. Alex plus over shower/sheetrock joint since it'll be painted anyways. And Dap 2.0 for heavy duty bath caulk, but needs to be trimmed and cleaned with MS or thinner, or you will have a big sticky mess to contend with.
Here's how to poke a tiny hole because the big angled hole is wrong...... now here's how yo change your calkinggun to make it cut the caulk tube exactly as I just told you not to
You dont have to cut a 1/4" tip for an 1/8" gap. The angle can depend on the shape of the gap you are cutting all the way to personal preference. Only time I have ever cut the V notch in my tip is on a windshield replacement. Never in a home or commercial construction atmosphere
Another hack is to tape each side of where you shoot the silicone. And remove the tape after you have dragged out the silicone with your finger covered in green soap.
I’m a welder and I understand that you get better penetration when you push especially vertically. But I’ve worked so many jobs using caulk and silicone I’ve never seen anyone push they pull and than use there finger to push it

This is great. To get behind taps without a piece of hose you can stack the nozzles onto each other if you have 2 or 3 tubes/ nozzles and tap them together acting like an extension tube/ nozzle or macdonalds straw.
I only recently discovered a nozzle that you can buy. It works in a similar manner, several of them clicked together, then turned to create the desired effect. Shockingly, for a bought "gimic", it really works.
@@highgatehandyman6479 they're called "Reech flexible silicone and caulking nozzles". Only a fiver, when you need them, like you say, they're invaluable. If you're from the UK screwfix do them.
In many cases, the professional uses the push caulk method, not the pull caulk shown in this video. My experience: 30_ years in the sunroom and skylight business.
Every tube of silicone (the ones meant to go in caulking guns) that I've ever seen in stores has the tip permanently attached to the tube. And then after the first use, no matter what you do, the silicone solidifies inside the nozzle such that you absolutely can NOT squeeze it out. The only option being to cut the nozzle down further so you can push out the plug of hardened silicone. How do you prevent this from happening?
Masking tape is surprisingly air-tight, and can keep a tube of any type of caulking good for several weeks. Just wrap a bit around the end of you need it to last a while.
The most important trick that got totally overlooked is that silicone is not paintable, and you’ll have to grind it and all the residue off if you ever want paint to stick.

I’ve been doing the rubber tubing trick for about 30 years, learned it on a show called “This Old House”. I loved that show. I would love to watch every episode
,😊👍👍
I am always fearful of doing new things because I think I will be unsuccessful, the info you have given in this video really helps me know that I can caulk now without making a mess and I really appreciate this! Always fantastic videos, thank you!
Don’t be afraid to make a mess because it’s inevitable. Just keep a clean rag in your back pocket to wipe up any messes
Yeah looks good, but mold will grow. Great for pros to get repeat business. "It's your cleaning not the install."

Never had an issue, 35 years ago and old timer showed me how to use a damp tile sponge corner and my lines always are clean and professional. But more ways to do one thing are never bad to know.
Almost any video without background music gets a thumbs up from me.
You're a genius, straight up. My caulking skills was your first example everytime. Thanks.
Its called a "speed bead", it's been around longer than we've been alive pal.
il will try. i hate to do the silicon.

I’ve caulked for years too. I don’t need any tools to get my bead straight I just do it straight from the gun, do you?
@@gdfggggg normally yes - 99% of the time, but once in a while I run into a special situation where I use tools or tape, or the hand squeeze tubes.

Many thanks for these great tips. In the middle of caulking the sunroom, so this will help do it right the first time!

И без лишних слов.
I agree for the Mr Bean part
👍🏻 Perfect tips presented in the best way and independent of language.
@Repent or you will likewise perish. Do you know anything other than your holy book? Ever read some literature about logic?
This guy knows. I always think the spray bottle is a bad idea as well as it runs behind the silicone then smearing it after meaning it won’t adhere properly to the tiles. Your better off using a stick that’s been soaked in washing up liquid.
@@Georgous92 Yeah never spray, only dab the tool in soapy water. And prepare the surfaces by cleaning (remove dust and grease) and maybe roughing them up a little with sanding paper if necessary, depending on the materials involved.

Alright, I just learned something here. My day is starting off on a good leg. Thank you Maker
So many great ideas here.👍....Thank you for sharing them.🙏
I worked as a contractor doing in tank sealing on the global 7000 aircraft at bombardier.
Would you like to seal my car?
For the trick where you used a large safety pin to poke a hole in the cap, where did you buy the cap(s) to use?
As a professional glazier....we always pushed the bead, not dragging it. Done correctly the tip flattens the bead and smoothed it out.

😊👍
Without a word being spoken this was very informative and well done, thanks
The first way works fine you just cut the hole too big putting too much caulk on so that it squishes out the sides of your finger. I use a case of caulk at a time painting houses.

Yeah , forcing sealant or caulking into the corners for better penetration and less air gaps seems to be the best way to get a great seal.
Bravo et merci pour ces très bonnes astuces 👍😃 !
Hello sir 😊🤝
@@Zie_carpentry Bonjour 🙂 !
Amazon sells a cover you can roll down on your cap to prevent the caulking from drying out. The ones I got are red and work exceptionally well.
I got them in my local paint store
Excuse me 🤝🤝😊
WOW! Thank you for these tips!!
Thanks for those ideas. They will come in handy. 👍
Such a easy tutorial. Thanks I think this time around my husband would execute it perfectly. 👌🏼👍🏻🤩
Super👍👍
Genial,
SUPER helpful thank you! I hate caulking, total rookie here so this was fantastic to see!
Ciao Riparatore , grandissimo video, quelle inquadrature che hai fatto son talmente belle che le proporro anche sul mio canale, complimenti👍👍👍
Muito obrigado amigo. Os brasileiros aqui o agradece. Deus o abençoe. 👏👏👏
Fantastic Tips , Thank You 👍
Instead of dragging the tip, and leaving a superficial bead, I use the gun perpendicular with a square cut tip, or pointing towards the direction of travel for deep joint penetration (and less in top, where it can shrink.
@@gpwcowboyWhat should be used in bathrooms instead of sillicone?
@@hc3d silicone is the easiest to use indoors for a high quality long lasting seal. You can use painters caulk anywhere you plan on having paint, but unpainted it will dry out and discolor. There are many construction sealants that can be used and left exposed, but none that I can think of that tool as easily as silicon. Most other sealants that will do the job are going to require a solvent such as paint thinner to tool out.
Yes!!!!!!
LIke the no fuss no face, no mouth, no music, no make up, no glamour video. Thanks from a do it yourself women.
Here's how to poke a tiny hole because the big angled hole is wrong...... now here's how yo change your calkinggun to make it cut the caulk tube exactly as I just told you not to

Thanks pal , lol only a few decades too late 🤣🤣 retired now but wish I had known a couple of these tips for diy.. cool bro.😎
I liked the extender that you put on your caulk, my caulk could use some extensions in times of need.
Cool stuff, and direct to the point 👍
Cheers.
You got Mad Tricks👌🏻
You dont have to cut a 1/4" tip for an 1/8" gap. The angle can depend on the shape of the gap you are cutting all the way to personal preference.
Only time I have ever cut the V notch in my tip is on a windshield replacement. Never in a home or commercial construction atmosphere
Awesome! Needed this 👏🏿👏🏿
Another hack is to tape each side of where you shoot the silicone. And remove the tape after you have dragged out the silicone with your finger covered in green soap.
Exellent!!! Thanks!)Good Day from the Russia!
Muy buenas ideas, gracias
실리콘마르기전에 물닿아도 되는건가요??
First and foremost you don’t pull a caulk line you push it. That way it puts pressure on the caulk to enter the gap if there is any.
I’m a welder and I understand that you get better penetration when you push especially vertically. But I’ve worked so many jobs using caulk and silicone I’ve never seen anyone push they pull and than use there finger to push it
@@joshuawatts7129 yep. Pushing caulk seems ridiculous. Never seen anyone do it
Fuck it I’m going to try it
Tha hand gestures... Priceless!!
1:44 that is an amazing idea.
lol but still get hardened
That was a fantastic education.😀
Супер! Гениально!

@@jezjukes i eould buy one if i saw it as it a very 'niche' tool that u eeally need when you need it.
@@highgatehandyman6479 they're called "Reech flexible silicone and caulking nozzles". Only a fiver, when you need them, like you say, they're invaluable.
If you're from the UK screwfix do them.
@@jezjukes good to know mate cheers.
Are you not supposed to avoid moisture until the caulk or silicone is dry? So wouldn’t spraying it with water be a bad thing?

I always just stretch a piece of elec tape over the end, come back 6 months later and still good.
@@travisedwards9983 This works I can say for sure
@@trenthink yup tape
packing tape, hot glue, anything but a screw or nail that I see so often
Only just seen this video, it's got good advice but I'm struggling to have the power to use gun, any advice please, Elaine
The most important trick that got totally overlooked is that silicone is not paintable, and you’ll have to grind it and all the residue off if you ever want paint to stick.
Υπάρχει και σιλικόνη που βάφεται.
Actually, you can paint the silicon with shellec and then paint anything on top on the shellec.
Polyurethane silicone is paintable…
Good video with many tips. Not clear on the orientation of the vee cut on second to last tip though, need close up view!
