Keep up the good work! I’ve been following your channel since it seems like we’ve got the same sort of projects going on. Great camera work and thumbnails.
Watched your video and felt confident to tackle the job. I went out to closely examine my set up... My garage has a decorative stucco design framing the garage; not visibke wood. 🤦 🤷 (???)
I'd like to know how to cut the bottom - whether you cut the side pieces of the bottom rubber seal under the door. I have a conflict between the side piece flaps and the rubber seal on the bottom of the door.
I was wondering if I could put this on the inside of my door frame to help with a storm door that doesn't fit evenly when it shuts. To help with any air that comes in where it doesn't fit tight enough.
I bought two black 16 foot long pieces at Overhead Door Company for $58. Everywhere else they were only sold in 9 foot sections or less and I didn’t want to have a seam across the top if I didn’t have to.
I have four doors; two need at 10' top seal, one needs 12' and one needs 16'. I also need 14' side seals on one door. The longest pieces I can find are 9'. Where do you find longer pieces?
Thanks for the video! Question, at about the 1:09 mark when you're peeling away the old seal you can see black strips on the door sections. What is that? I feel like that probably helps the seal and want to add it to my door as well but not sure what to look for.
The black strips you see behind the rotten door seal a 1:09 are just the edges of the garage door panels. That is the part of the door that the garage door weather stripping seals against.
Thanks Richard. That's a good question but I don't know for sure. I just used the nails that came out of the old strip I removed. We don't get much moisture where we live so I don't expect any rust stains for quite some time.
Great video. But I have one question. On the vertical trim. How far is the gap do you need from the garage door to the seal to prevent hitting or too large of spacing?
Thanks! I just put my strips up against the door with light pressure from the ground to the top with the door closed. That way it has a good seal from top to bottom with the door closed. My door functions without any issues using this method.
Hope we have a winter this year, last year we only got half our precip a measley 3 inches in reno. California is so freaking dry, over 4 million acres have burned this summer.😭
Me too but I'm not looking forward to driving in the snow with all the other folks out there. Luckily I don't have to do much driving unless I want to. 😀
I purchased mine at my local Lowe's. Here is a link of some I found on Amazon but they were much cheaper at Lowe's. 7-Foot Vinyl Uniflex Vinyl Garage Seal for Top and Sides (Bright White) amzn.to/3SrY0jj
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Thank you I checked my local hardware stores. Lowe's is the only one that carries it. Hoping to do it before the snow flies soon :(
Typically how long do these last after installation depending on the climates.. I live in Nevada.. No snow not much rain but hot as hell in the summers
I don't really know how long they last but the ones I replaced were 11 years old. I'm in Colorado and it's hot in the summer and cold in the winter here.
Great Video! Thanks for the Tips!!!!! Can you post a link of where you purchase the weather stripper. I have search Home depot and Lowes & I cant locate it. Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Dave! Here is a link to the weather strips I purchased at Lowes. They were back by the garage door items. www.lowes.com/pd/Royal-Mouldings-Limited-9-ft-x-1-3-4-in-White-PVC-Garage-Weatherstrip/1000444111
I have noticed that they get installed with the sides overlapping the top seal. Do you know the reason for this? It just feels wrong to me because with siding, roofs etc. Everything gets lapped from the bottom up.
If the door pushes against the entire top seal, it doesn’t effect the sides much at all. If the door were to push against the side seals first, it would hold the top seal out from the door. Hope it makes sense.
I noticed that you never replaced the wooden framing pieces that were initially removed to allow access/removal of the old weaherstripping. Can you talk about that?

I would say put the caulking on, why go through all that trouble of replacing it just to skimp out on a three dollar tube of caulking that is going to seal the crack between the two pieces which will cause faster deterioration, if it’s not sealed
This is going to be my weekend project. New widow here and going to do this work myself. You made it look pretty easy. Thanks
You're welcome Joyce, I wish you the best with your project.
Thank you! My garage door doesn't have any weatherstripping so your information was very helpful. I believe I need to start with the top piece.
Glad it was helpful!
Best video I have seen. Clear and to the point
I'm glad it was helpful!
Nice job. Thanks for the video! I didn't know they sold it that way. I bought just weather stripping.

Solid video, easy to follow instructions. Simple tools. Thanks.
You're welcome Tony, hope it helped you out.
I honestly thi k I can tackle this project based on your video. I noticed mine were cracked and looked old
I’m sure you will do just fine. I wish you the best.
Nice video, thanks for making it straight forward.
thank you for this! Will try to replace mine as soon as the summer/heat ends!
Nicely done. The only thing I would do differently is cover the nail heads with paint or caulking so they don't rust and streak the weather strip.
That’s a great point, thanks for stopping by.
Yours is more helpful than most other video clips on this subject. Thank you!
Glad to hear that!
hello, great demonstration. I wish you had showed what kind of weather stripping this is. I need to do my garage very soon. Thank you.
There are some product links in the video description if you want to see what I used.
Thank you, very much, I like that you went to the point, easy to understand.

I'm a lefty, too (I had my wife nail that side, she's a righty) we replaced all three strips
Excellent!
I’m a lefty too, but use my left regardless how out of place I look to others…lol…

Do they sell an 18' long trim for the top of the door or would I need to install two pieces?

Thanks

PVC poly headed trim nails would leave a nice finish on the weather strip, stainless steel ones would be even better.
That's a great suggestion! Thank you!
Hi wana sealed bottom of my 2 car garage door. How would I do that without opening door at all? Door is messed up and do t wanna try to open it.

@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 I bought my pieces at Home Depot.
I read that the PVC weatherstripping shrinks and expands depending on the season. Have you had any of these issues with your old or new stripping?
I haven't experienced any problems with the new weather stripping I installed.
I have noticed that they get installed with the sides overlapping the top seal. Do you know the reason for this? It just feels wrong to me because with siding, roofs etc. Everything gets lapped from the bottom up.
I don't know for sure but my guess would be so that when the door closes it pushes against the top seal and won't tear the edges of the side seals.

Do you need to caulk the seam at all or just leave it?
That is up to you. I did not caulk the seam on mine.

I noticed that you never replaced the wooden framing pieces that were initially removed to allow access/removal of the old weaherstripping. Can you talk about that?
I don't know what "wooden framing pieces" you are asking about. The white frame with the rubber seal is the new weather stripping. Hope this helps.
Where to buy those garage weather seals ?
I bought mine at my local Lowe's but Amazon sells them as well.

Isnt the 45 on the plastic flap backwards?
I believe it is cut correctly so it fits properly with the upper strip.

Yes and unfortunately those price increases apply to absolutely everything. It's just ridiculous IMO!

I don’t know how well they would hold over time without a head on the nail. My garage opening sees significant temp changes through the year.
South Paw! 😂IKR
Go Lefties!
👍🏻
Aren’t you installing the up side down ? I think the grooved side should be outward
No, the groove side goes against the wood.
I don’t get why cut it at 45deg. Tho
My understanding is the 45 degree angle gives a better fit where it meets with the top weather strip.
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 that was question also. Great video
Why doesn't the weatherstrip touch the door on the right side ?
I'm subscribing just because you are so handsome...;-)
Marty,
Thanks for subbing!

I think you have the seals too close to the door. They shouldn't have that gap. They should sit flat against the door.
Great video!
Thanks!
