Thank you so very much for your instructions! I’m a 65 yr old woman who does most of my own easy repair work and with this video I CAN do this!
Update: I DID do it! It was WAY easy! I actually used a heavy pair of tin snips to cut it after marking it. It cut the air flow very well! I’m sooo happy!

As a locksmith, I can honestly say I’ve done countless service calls to fix locks that were damaged by improperly installed weather stripping. The most important thing you can do before you install the first screw is, shut the door so it latches and........... LOCK THE DEADBOLT!!!!!! (If there is one)
Then, go ahead and *gently* push the stripping up against the door, Mark with a pencil and install your screws. It’s important to lock the deadbolt because quite often the strike plates for the deadbolt and the knob/lever latch, aren’t aligned properly. It not properly installed, the deadbolts bolt will drag across the strike plate with too much resistance and eventually break. I’ve have seen this problem countless times, weather stripping causes lock and door closing/fit issues almost by default.

When I mark the screw holes to install the metal weatherstripping , should I shut and latch the door with/without the kerf strips (that has been inserted into the groove on the top and latch side edge?
The kerf strips don't properly seal the old door but the door does shut latch easily. In other words do I remove all old weatherstripping first?

I put mine on, am very inexperienced with this. My deadbolt feels tighter even if I loosen all the screws on that side. When I tightened them it was even worse. I'm not sure if I should redo the entire thing or if a little tightness in the deadbolt is okay.

Thank you! My house was built in 1949 on a regular foundation that one previous owner decided to hand dig a basement. Well, no door fits the exterior doorway so several years ago, a friend who had an extra steel door w/foam interior, cut that door to sort of fit the space, then wrapped the open end with steel that he cut off. Well, it's ugly but it worked better than the hollow-core wooden one that was there before and had a huge hole at the bottom that all kinds of wildlife loved. Anyway, that big basement is my dog's house during the day and it's conditioned but there's a huge gap around the door jamb that just needs a good weather-stripping fix. This is just the ticket!!! I don't have a hack saw. Guess I'm gettin one.

The best tip was that on the long pieces you want to have a screw very close to the end...otherwise you will have that end flopping around until it gets to the screw. Do two cuts, that was a great idea, so as to get your screws close to the ends of the long pieces. Actually this also applies to the top shorter piece. Great video. Thank you, Dr. George W.

I commented on this earlier, but I have to add another. It's been close to zero here in Buffalo, and our unheated side entrance has been brutally cold. In the past I managed to seal most of the cracks with adhesive backed foam stripping, but there was always a draft. We couldn't keep liquids there because we were afraid they would freeze. I installed this kind of insulating strip and a new door sweep yesterday. It's amazing (kind of like when I discovered heat tape for my pipes). There is no draft, and the entryway is comfortable. I guess I'm teachable. Thank you again. I've subscribed, and I look forward to finding new solutions to old problems.

Thank you for the great instructions. I've got a steel entry door that needs to be replaced but I just couldn't afford it this year. Winter's coming and I don't want my heating bill to be any higher than it has to be. I added the bronze one to my cart. Looking forward to fixing the draft and light leak.

Thank you for this video! I just moved to an old cabin which needs a lot of work, one of which is sealing the old windows and doors for the winter. I have no experience doing any home improvements or repairs, but I need to learn as I can't afford to hire anybody. This will be a great first project. I'll be looking at your other videos, too 👍🤞

Thank you for this! We live in a very old house, and in the winter when it's windy, you can hear the wind whistling in around the door! I can do this!! And I need the tip for under the door, too!!

Thanks for the links and demo. My door has too much gap and the latch doesn't hold it tight against traditional foam strips, even the wide v-strips. this is a great solution for me b/c we can seal from the outside and ensure it's snug all around even if the gaps a wide in one place and narrow in another, and it doesn't jam up the door from having too much foam in the tighter places.
Special thanks for the links. I couldn't find anything online b/c everyone is using foam between the door and frame.

I use a similar weatherstripping on doors. I use the one that has the same weatherstripping that comes on new doors but has the same metal strip to mount it to the frame. It works great! and when it wears out you just go up to the home center and buy the loose pieces the you would put in the newer doors and replace it.

GREAT video. I wish I had someone who would come out and do stuff like this. I email so many handymen sites- tell them I have this plus a few small items. I say in capital letters - I'm willing to pay a minimum to make it worth it. I usually get "we dont do that stuff" in return.

Hi, after watching your video I bought a similar MD brand trim kit at home depot for my 1968 door. The door had gaps around the handle and sides, after using this kit the gaps around the sides are gone. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about easy products to solve common problems.

You can get that newer foam type of weatherstripping (used on newer doors) that comes with an aluminum strip. Easily installed similar to what you have shown on this video on any door. Much better than the rubber that tends to harden up in cold cold weather.

      Nice.
You can also take a oscillating tool and cut a channel in the wood and put a new style seal in, just like the new doors. If you dont have an oscillator, you can take off the 3 wood pieces the door shuts against, and cut a dado with a skill saw /table saw/ router, etc..

Seeing you with that green Lutz screwdriver reminds me of watching my own hands work. I like this weather stripping but it's not very pretty. I've actually took off the stop and ripped a notch in it so when I put it back on, it will accommodate the newer weather strip that's on pre hung doors.

Been trying for years to remedy this problem but nothing seemed to work for long. Definitely doing this before the snow flies. Feel real dumb for not even thinking about real weather stripping instead of the foam sticky stuff.

I'm definitely going to try this out! I bought an old house in the summer, and none of the adhesive stick-on weather stripping I've tried so far has done much of anything. Thanks for the tip!
