As a writer and character designer, it's interesting how well most of my characters wardrobes fit this. Most of my characters have a reoccurring color in their wardrobe and throughout this whole video, whenever the color a particular character wears the most came up I was like "yup that's definitely so-and-so" in terms of their personality and the impressions they strive to give off.
Hey, I'll start studying graphic design(includes character design and animation) this september and I wanna know if it's easy to find a well paying job? It has always been my passion since I was little and I'm finally making it come true but I'm also scared if I'll be able to pull it off or not.
@@SleepyAzie Hey, sorry. I'm not exactly a professional writer and character designer yet. I'm still trying to find my way in too. I wish you the best of luck. Never give up on your dreams! We'll get there some day.
I'm also a writer, and something I've learned is that color theory isn't universal, but relative to different cultures and contexts. You can play a bit and resignify those exact same colors along your different stories :)
Be careful about color psychology, associations we make with colors -- Different cultures can have either drastically different or subtly similar meanings they associate with a given color, and the boundaries for color names can also differ from culture to culture. Just because it means a few things in your own culture doesn't mean it will be those in another culture. Also beware of thinking you've thought of all the associations, even in your own language or culture. For example, is red active, energetic, or is it bloody and violent, or is it ripe fruit or a danger signal or a stop sign? It may mean any of those things, even for English-speaking people. Is a color really masculine or feminine, or is that a cultural thing, or only from a few generations ago? Its a color or palette youthful or elderly? There are all sorts of variables.
Yeah, it even ranges from person to person as well. I know for a fact that certain colour choices for clothing tell my subconscious brain to stay away. Colours like beige, any pastel colour or yellow do that for me and I don’t understand why. Something in my brain tells me those colours come with negative experiences. Usually I won’t judge someone for wearing those colours too harshly, I just proceed with caution. So, wear whatever colour combo you want because results will vary.
While this is true, there ARE some associations of color that are universal. Every culture associates green with nature, every culture associates red with blood, every culture associates blue with the sky and the sea. So I'd argue that cultural differences apply mostly to non-primary colors, where the associations are weaker and can depend more on the specific circumstances. For example, there are few yellow things around us, so do you associate yellow more with flowers, the sun, gold? Do you associate white with snow or with the clouds? Do you associate orange with a sunset or with fruit? Do you associate pink with human lips (this is also a matter of skin color) or with Sakura petals? Those are the things that vary wildly between cultures.
I think this whole video is bullshit, it falls into the same category of tests that were written for specific racial groups. Its very similar to the sloppy thinking of "anyone who folds their arms is closed off, ah no, they might also be cold... yawn youtube is starting to be all bland content that is not really novel or interesting. People drawing unnecessary distinctions on topics which barely matter.
I agree! In Germany, for example, wearing brown is seen as controversial, since that color is associated with Naziism. In China, green is considered untrustworthy (the green hat symbolizes cheating on a partner).
As a graphic designer... I studied color psychology deeply and always used it in fashion.. and I'm super happy that you're telling people about it and telling them how to integrate it into their fashion life... top tier. well done Tim 💪

I think, brown + white is a great combination of colours for a formal suite, it looks kinda oldschool, mature and also helps to avoid the filling of authority and coldness most classical suit colours give
Most of my outfits are "white brown", "brown black" "brown navy" most of my pants are brown, beige and green, while shirts are black, grey, white or colourful

I love this kind of stuff! My wardrobe obviously has the neutral grey, black and white mixed within it. But for the other colours I mostly wear Brown, Blue, and Green. I LOVE Yellow and Orange, but I only have a few items of them. I also prefer the warmer, most rustic oranges, and the deeper, golden-brown yellows, like the examples from 3:01-3:04 in this video. I've tried purple, red, and pink at times, but they don't do as much for me. Although anytime I've worn red, people definitely seem to compliment me more and tell me it suites me. I found that interesting.
Color psychology has always been an interest of mine. I like wearing different colors based on my mood, the weather, etc. Yellow, red or orange on sunny days; purple or green when wanting to mix things up. Blue is always a good color to wear; grey, white and black are particularly ideal in a work/business environment. And like they say, your clothing style says a lot about your character.

The colors you wear truly do have an impact. I work for a company that required all of its field employees to wear white pants. Prior to getting the job we were made to watch a video. In the video we watched, employees walk up to the door of a prospective customer with regular clothes on and most of them got turned away. But in the same video when we watched an employee with white pants approach the door, nine out of ten of these employees were invited into the home. The research in the video show that when people wear white clothes they are more trusted than people who don't. I found that to be pretty valuable information.
A long, long, time ago when I got involved in doing window display I learned about color, designing, and combinations, this presentation just reminded me about that most learned experience, many thanks.

Very well put together video of color psychology. I wonder though if other viewers go through different color phases in their lives? I've cycled through reds, greys, browns, blacks and now am really gravitating towards the color purple. And colors that complement it well such as pink.
as someone who's fashion sense consist of primarily 2 superdry hoodies (an orange one and a gray one with light blue sleeves) i feel like i pull off the look of both really well while also making myself feel comfortable with how i look. Great video nonetheless!!
Hmm well this actually helped with my party and us deciding our colors for our characters in dnd. I know that is a weird connection but we are all artsy and it’s a story and roleplay heavy game. This means character art means a lot to us and since clothes actually have a role in the storytelling, we were careful about choosing them. My own character has a palate of mostly blue and brown and their eyes are green. The main pop of color outside of all this is a set of long red tassel earrings. Another player’s character who contrasts my own as a foil uses the main color of red and accents of black and grays. Our cleric went with white with accents of black. The rest can’t really settle on their palate and are still exploring it so I sent them this and they said it helped. Actually after watching this I feel it helped explain why each of us who had already chosen, selected the palate we had for the characters we play. Thanks for the video!
I just wear whatever shirt is comfortable/appropriate for the situation, no color preferense. Ive got red, white, blue, black etc t shirts, and if I need to wear something like a jacket, ive got camo, black, red. If I need a blazer, I have gray and thats becasue its a pass me down from my brother who had my mom choose it out for him.
When I was married, my narc husband used to wear a lot of deep greens and browns.. After our divorce, I was surprised to see him wearing a lot of bright red. Because he had red hair and freckles, I thought this odd. He also started wearing very bright, bold electric blue which he had never worn in our 2 decades of marriage. Because there are so many different shades of blue, it would be helpful to subcategorize these. Some are restful and peaceful, and some are very bold and powerful. Just because it's blue doesn't evoke the same feeling.
"Red is the most competitive color", this may be true, but many of the teams who have won the FIFA World Cup (which is the most competitive football tournament) such as Italy, Argentina, France, and Uruguay have worn blue as their primary shirt color. In fact, 13 of the 22 World Cup winning shirts have had blue as their primary color, meanwhile only 1 winning shirt was primarily red (England '66). And Brazil has the most World Cup victories with their home shirt being yellow. So...when it comes to sports teams, I'll stick to those in blue ;)
LOVED THIS! I love color psychology and this video was so concise and packed with info. It was also such a nice surprise to see me and my purple sweater thrown in :)
Now I know why I own so much blue clothing. I've never known why I have so much blue in my closet because it's not my favorite color, but now I know. And now "concert black" makes a lot more sense as well.
Texture and appearance is a big part of it too. Blue jeans may say one thing but torn up blue jeans say something completely different even though they are the same color blue jeans.
This is super interesting. I wonder how personality would play in to this? If you already have a cheerful personality, I wonder if that would contrast well with a more calm vibe like green or blue?
I choose my clothes by comfort, not color. I am wearing a white Weezer shirt today for no reason other than that it's the only thing that doesn't look awkward with short shorts in this heat. And that's another thing. I own a lot of graphic tees, mostly relating to bands or TV shows. So clothes can also communicate your interests (unless you're only wearing them for the aesthetic.)
Truly an insightful and interesting video - as an artist, discussing colour is always fascinating and this video really helped me take another look at colours! Keep up the good work! :-)
for anyone else in the comments, consider how colors can be connotated by people's experience in life. for example, in my own life, purple represents control. it's a color i found quite fondly, and in my own use of computers, when something is purple, it's because i intentionally made it that way. i picked that because it can be comforting and bold in the same breath, and by just changing the brightness you can pull the strings to make it do exactly what you need it to in any given context it means something different to me, so clearly different colors can mean different things to different people, apart from all these general connotations
I wonder if "Red" being the first color we can see is because that was the first color for the eyes/brain to work on (because of the blood-vessels in your eyelids).
Amazing summary! A great book to get more in depth in this subject is Eva Heller's Psichology of Colour. She explores a TON of historical and sociological meanings of all 12 hues, each with its own chapter. Really excellent resource :)
Was interested in what you was going to say about pink since I've been enjoying that colour lately and get compliments when wearing it. I do try to be empathetic in my daily life so maybe it's been a good way to express how I feel inside. Definitely saving this video. Another banger from you Tim, thanks!
I personally wear a lot of nuetral colors mixed with green. I like green and brown particularly. My cold weather wear is mostly comprised(as of this moment) if a couple of green sweatpants, and darker overwear, like black hoodie or brown jacket with hood. But otherwise I wear greys, whites, blacks apart from the occasional green top. So greens kind of my go to color I just naturally gravitate towards it more than others. On the other hand my girlfriend likes cyan blues a lot and my best friend has a lot of red and browns in his wardrobe which y ironically fits with his hot headed, competitive, but energetic and loyal personality. He values loyalty but gets into conflict over it. I value loyalty but am also more so a passive observer and mediator during issues. But it actually balances out quite well. He’s willing to stand up in situations where someone needs to be told what’s what and I’m able to bring him back when he gets heated during a situation that doesn’t call for it. He can push where I can’t and I can bring level headedness where it’s required instead. It’s really interesting how our favorite colors do give a sort of look into each others personalities I prefer the more nuetral and earthy colors and he prefers the energetic “get out there” colors.
I usually wear a blue hoodie, a black base + white art coat-like jacket, black or blue pants/shorts and white, blue and black shoes, as well as sometimes a blue+white hat.
Most people wear jeans. Indigo is the traditional color for jeans. Are you saying most people in the current era are actually STABLE since they wear typical jeans? I have statistics that invalidate that point...

i wear only dark colors, mostly black, darker purple or navy blue. unlike me, my friend wears only bright colors, mostly yellow, orange and pink. We have been best friends for a few years and she is like a younger sister to me. watching the video, i love how accurate this is, it also made me realise that i should probably try white clothing. thanks ^^
4:27 to add on to what purple also represents is magic. It was popularized by games I think. It also reminds people of dreams. So overall it’s a very fantasy-esk color

Very well put together video of color psychology. I wonder though if other viewers go through different color phases in their lives? I've cycled through reds, greys, browns, blacks and now am really gravitating towards the color purple. And colors that complement it well such as pink.
I wear browns grays and blacks and sometimes accent colors like beige blue and white they don't fully represent me but are pretty accurate good job👍
ur videos are so satisfying to watch I just recently started getting into fashion and this really helps when deciding on outfits to wear everyday :)
Your videos just keep inspiring me to dress more intentionally. Love this!
My whole life, I thought what was considered "fashion" was just random. Now I see there are many more aspects to it than I thought
As an Artist who likes to understand and teach color theory to others, This is the best video I have seen it for it!
as someone who's fashion sense consist of primarily 2 superdry hoodies (an orange one and a gray one with light blue sleeves) i feel like i pull off the look of both really well while also making myself feel comfortable with how i look. Great video nonetheless!!
SICK VIDEO. next level. Tim. You and your team keep outdoing yourself. 👏🏼
This bro never dissappoints.
Great work Tim 👊
I wear yellow a lot and those descriptions are on spot-
I just wear whatever shirt is comfortable/appropriate for the situation, no color preferense. Ive got red, white, blue, black etc t shirts, and if I need to wear something like a jacket, ive got camo, black, red. If I need a blazer, I have gray and thats becasue its a pass me down from my brother who had my mom choose it out for him.
I love beige and browns. Great work on this video
I love your editing style, really great
For those of us with warm, olive-toned skin, wearing white is a good way to make us look dead... lol. Please go with ivory.
I wear light blue, red and black alot watching this is quite interesting on my look on colours
I'm gonna use this for designing my own original characters to be iconic, recognizable, and expressive in their outfits
Bro criminals be taking notes on what to wear: 🌈🌈🔵🔴🔴🟢🟢🟣
I could see the hard work put into this vid. Makes me want to go put a fit on and go out!!!
As an introvert, I approve of this message 5:40
When I was married, my narc husband used to wear a lot of deep greens and browns.. After our divorce, I was surprised to see him wearing a lot of bright red. Because he had red hair and freckles, I thought this odd. He also started wearing very bright, bold electric blue which he had never worn in our 2 decades of marriage. Because there are so many different shades of blue, it would be helpful to subcategorize these. Some are restful and peaceful, and some are very bold and powerful. Just because it's blue doesn't evoke the same feeling.
I did the same, with my wardrobe after my controlling boyfriend left. I still don't know why I made such drastic changes.
I like the in-depth description of the choice of colour wear.
Now I understand why I love black so much. I am somewhat of an introvert. Thanks for making that clear.
The editing and research put into this vid 👏 mucho bravo
The effort, quality and editing that is done in this video is fantastic. Thank you tim and crew
This is super interesting. I wonder how personality would play in to this? If you already have a cheerful personality, I wonder if that would contrast well with a more calm vibe like green or blue?
Very informative video and great editing as well!
And to think, all these years I thought that having mostly black in my wardrobe signified that I work as a professional stage technician.
Truly an insightful and interesting video - as an artist, discussing colour is always fascinating and this video really helped me take another look at colours!
Keep up the good work! :-)
for anyone else in the comments, consider how colors can be connotated by people's experience in life.
for example, in my own life, purple represents control. it's a color i found quite fondly, and in my own use of computers, when something is purple, it's because i intentionally made it that way.
i picked that because it can be comforting and bold in the same breath, and by just changing the brightness you can pull the strings to make it do exactly what you need it to in any given context
it means something different to me, so clearly different colors can mean different things to different people, apart from all these general connotations
I love wearing purple
I wonder if "Red" being the first color we can see is because that was the first color for the eyes/brain to work on (because of the blood-vessels in your eyelids).
I just like pink, purple, and white. Let me just say, I am not calm in any way. I just wear what I want:)
What colors you wear say about you:
Brown: You're wearing brown.
Blue: You're wearing blue.
Green: You're wearing green.
Amazing summary! A great book to get more in depth in this subject is Eva Heller's Psichology of Colour. She explores a TON of historical and sociological meanings of all 12 hues, each with its own chapter. Really excellent resource :)
Thank you so much for recommending!
Red = Power
Black = Funeral 😂💀
Absolutely loved this video! As I have started to dabble in the fashion world, videos like this really help clear things up and present new ideas. Also, your videos always put me in a good mood and have such a calming effect. Love the vibes. Stay well man.
"White suggests that you are - very careful with ketchup." Made me chuckle, its so true.
i wear only dark colors, mostly black, darker purple or navy blue. unlike me, my friend wears only bright colors, mostly yellow, orange and pink. Our style perfectly represents our personalities too, i am colder, give off somehow power-like vibes, mature, introverted and mysterious. she's quite the exact opposite, warm, joyfull, child like, extroverted and open.
We have been best friends for a few years and she is like a younger sister to me.
watching the video, i love how accurate this is, it also made me realise that i should probably try white clothing. thanks ^^
Love this and ive tried to find personal color palette now can use this too
4:27 to add on to what purple also represents is magic. It was popularized by games I think. It also reminds people of dreams. So overall it’s a very fantasy-esk color
Y daughters boyfriend wears a large loose tea shirt and trousers in fawn. On his head is a hat like like a soft caketin with a front brim.
@@marionandrews6528 Wot? xD
Did you mean to write under my comment? :0
Orange:
What Tim sees: enthusiasm, strength
What I see: Orange
wow, blue, my favourite colour is described with words you can use to describe me? i also prefer colder over warmer.
i really love snow, im rather peaceful and calm, i am also a big fan of hygiene
never thought me liking colder climates makes me like colours that represent not only that but me
I wear A lot of black and purple and white. For the purple part I get called "creative" a lot. And purple and black are my favorite colors. I get called "professional" by the black and white part.
As an artist this really helps me with the work I'm doing. Which kind of mood and backgrounds I use for the color. I think this is really handy in general.
Purple turtleneck
Amazing video. It is incredibly interesting to see what colors contribute to a fit. I learned a lot by watching this and as usual you're explaining everything in a way that just lifts my mood. Thanks Tim!
0:01 bro named himself jeb_
Great video as a Brit I died inside at Dur-ham though
To be honest, I like all colors & it varies on how you use them, combinations, or infused them to make.. A Work of Art. 🎨 🎭😹😸
I wasn't really that into fashion before but watching this video really sparked a new found love for fashion!
This is the content we needed. I feel like I learned lots of useful things that I can begin applying right away. Thank you, Tim!
Don't be a sociopath. People who pick colors to be perceived certain ways are 100% sociopaths.
You are outright manipulating people.
@@OgdenM it takes one to know one ;)
Your channel has come so far. Nice to see you continually improve the quality of your videos.
Seriously though, it's so satisfying to see this channel progress. Thank you, Tim, for putting in the effort. We will be reaping the benefits for years to come.
As an artist, I use this same thought process for my character designs. It's an interesting topic, no doubt
brown and green together will always give me starbucks emplyee vibes XD
man, in less-fortunate countries, even things like having some clothes is a blessing, half of my clothes were gift from people, after Fire Accident took my house, and i don't give a dime of what should i wear
