I've watched complete opposite recommendaiton on youtube from someone who hires. To make own portfolio page simple without quirks, almost like a resume.
“As a designer, you're only as good as the weakest example of work in your portfolio.” Ok, yes I see the logic in it, but that is also very harsh and somewhat dangerous advice that can paralyse new designers into not daring to post anything less than an absolute stellar piece of work, which they can recognise when they see it but perhaps still cannot produce themselves. It's as if we're never allowed to make even a single mistake, and this might not actually be that helpful for designers who are still trying to find their footing and confidence in this competitive field. Otherwise, great advice and video, as always!
You actually hear this comment a lot when it comes to portfolios. It come into play more when you have a lot in a portfolio because you think you need it. It’s better to have fewer good pieces rather than a lot and some aren’t your best work.
Hey Satori! I want to thank you, your tips and advices made my first year in the profession much easier and lots more productive. Not mentioning that your works are inspiring on their own! Cheers mate, you're a legend! ❤
Hello, I really like you, I am a student from China, I saw your pirated videos in China, so that I can learn from the wall outside the Internet, so that I can learn better, thank you for your sharing
Very pertinent again, thanks As A beginner designer who's going for her bachelor (after a few other lives before that), I really need to learn fast to have nice work to showcase well in my portfolio :)
As always, great video and solid advice! Thank you! Do you by any chance have a video about portfolio design for newbies, just out of school and lacking real paid projects?
Hey thanks! If you don't have any real projects here are a few things you can look at. - work for non profits/charities for free or very little money - work for friends or family - enter into online graphic design competitions All of these will provide real briefs that you can talk about in your portfolio, and show your skills/knowledge of problem solving and designing.
Sure, websites are cool, but if as a beginner in the field i need to send a portfolio to a business i'd like to work for or a potential client, isn't a PDF or Canva presentation a possibile alternative to showcase your work?
Use what you have available. There are more accessible website editors like wix, but as long as you can present what you have well, it will still take you a long way
I just post my stuff on behance and send the link to employers. Heck, I even used google drive, uploaded my works there and send the link. Let it be their problem to check my stuff out. But I guess, having a website has a great advantage. But behance is enough for me.
im in my last year in university studying graphic design and i dont really know how to start to make one i m just adding them to my insta page and thats it i dont have the money for a site
My opinion is if you're a beginner, put it all out. As beginners, we're trying to get experience more than anything else. Once you get more internships and jobs, you can start honing the focus of you portfolio.
I just had a meeting with my advisor (a graphic designer) and he asked me, "What is the point of my portfolio?" He recommended doing a flow chart to see if it would help me figure out what to keep from my old major and how to direct it for graphic design.
Try out Readymag.. it's really easy to use. Also you can use Adobe Portfolio if you have an Adobe account. Other than that, hire someone to code it for you or use Wordpress

Is it ok to present all work in portfolio or stick to one niche ?
