Patek Philippe vs. $500 Watch? | Watchfinder & Co.

  • You may have seen that I bought myself a new timepiece-check out the review if you haven’t seen it already-and it’s no ordinary watch. It’s a pocket watch, from 1950, from the American railroad, and it cost me £250. So why on Earth would I even consider comparing it to a £25,000 wristwatch? Well, because-why not?

Since 2009, when they left the Geneva Seal certification, PP's finishing is worse than most 10k watches, forget about 30k watches. Their production went from 20,000 timepieces in 2009 to over 80,000 in 2019 (they went from 10,000 to 20,000 timepieces from 2009 to 2010 alone). And they barely hired anyone else in the finishing department so unless the guys over there improved their efficiency by tenfold that's machine polishing you're getting.

I bought a limit pocket watch 20 years ago. It dates from 1912. I use it as a bedroom side clock now. It needs winding every day and looses about 5 mins a day but it’s great resetting it every day. It cost me 99 pounds at the time and I still love it.

That's exactly the reason why I collect american (and british) pocket watches for more than twenty years. Thanks for pinning it down to one video. I owned a PP wristwatch, but I sold it recently. I prefer to wear my pocket watches on a daily basis (wearing now: a Sangamo 23J Getty model by Illinois). For easter, it might be a Frodsham minute repeater. Yes, you can wear them and they still keep excellent time - if you treat yourself to an excellent (pocket) watch.

A well-maintained 992 is an impressive machine. My 992 is 110 years old, and it keeps time as accurate as my 3130 Sub (both less than 1.5 SPD). Literally, World War I was yet to happen when this watch was made. The 992Bs are capable of being even more accurate. It amazes me how they mass-produced a mechanical watch with that level of accuracy over a century ago, and how well they still run today.

I inherited my grandfather‘s Ball railroad watch, made in the 1800s. That watch is more accurate than any watch that I own including an expensive dive watch. Most people should know but many don’t that the little pocket that comes on blue jeans is a pocket watch pocket, which is where my pocket watch goes when I carry it which is often. I love caring that watch pulling it out and showing it off. I am always amazed at how accurate a watch that was made over 100 years ago can be.

Yep, the Hamilton 992B is one of the best railroad watches of its era. They made something like 200k of them. it could use a new dial though, you could probably pick one up on Ebay for about $70-90. I love pocketwatches, I own over 500 of them now.

I have a few beautiful pocket watches: enamel dial, blued hands, engraved precious metal cases, decorated movements - for which I paid a pittance. I do wear them now and then and receive far more compliments than my much more expensive wrist watches. The only compliments I get on them are from sales types who are more interested in the status...

The fact is you can get a pocket watch with close to Phillips Dufour quality finishing, especially with the beveling (convex bezels, interior angles) for less than $500. The Hamilton in this video is only the start of pocket watch quality. Heck, the Patek Phillips pocket watches you can get for a few thousand dollars have better quality than most of today’s Patek wristwatches, especially the time-only ones.

Yes agreed that it’s A RIDICULOUS comparison one heard so often from those who can’t afford something and can’t wait to fire poison arrows. However even as a pocket watch the Hamilton is hard to see as anything more than ordinary, There are many many such timepieces that easily out perform it aesthetically and I’m sure are just as able. There are Patek’s, Breguet’s and possibly numerous other pocket watches that would make far more enticing bedside timepieces than a Hamilton,

There is one thing that many don’t know but for black tie and white tie events u normally wear a. Pocket and not a wrist watch.
This is a men’s fashion rule and no matter what agent 007 is doing. This is the rule.
So no black or white tie is complete without a pocket watch. So whenever I have the opportunity to wear a black tie. My grandfathers massive Gold IWC is telling me time at that evening.

Yknow those little pockets above the main pocket on the right hand side of your jeans? That design choice was originally meant to carry pocket watches, so if you really wanna be old fashioned, get a chain and carry it in there.
Also, people think way too deeply about the price of watches anyways. Get a watch that you'll enjoy, and that makes you feel happy and accomplished. With that mentality, people of any income at any level of society can get the same enjoyment out of collecting timepieces. I have a collection of nine watches with a collective value of maybe a few thousand dollars and I love them all as if they were worth millions.

That balance wheel on your Patek appears to have a wobble to it. It does not look as True as the Hamilton Balance wheel. As an American collector I Prefer Howard over Hamilton. I have a Edward Howard produced in the late 1870's that loses about 5 seconds a week. Not bad for a watch thats over 140 years old. Edward Howards were the premiere RR watches of the 1800's and 1900's

Precisely one year and 19 days ago, after a careful and long consideration, based on research and many arguments based in history and heritage, I offered a gift to myself: a Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date. I wanted a Swiss made mechanical. I wanted a watch that looks impressive and that has some ties to horological history. And since I am fond of Christopher Nolan's movies, and how he tied Hamiltons into the story of interstelar, I decided to reach for my wallet. But your channel, the storytelling behind it, your passion ar what inspired me to make a thought out choice that I am very happy with.
Two days later we went into the first lockdown. One year (and) 19 days later, I am still as happy with my choice as on the day I made it. I now have a Hamilton in common with you. Not the same caliber, not the same class, but a Hamilton nonetheless.

Patek Phillippe is overhype and overpriced. They're making about 500% profit. It doesn't cost that much to design and produce a watch. People are just paying for the name just like Rolex. Grand Seiko can produce a competitive watch for a fraction of the cost.

Put it on a waistcoat, and you have instant wearability. I don't see why one of your best horological purchases should be confined to a desk job. It can be a great talking piece, especially with your voice.

I have a 1893 Waltham watch that is ornately decorated that came to be by happenstance. A friend's great uncle had passed and the watch was part of his estate. My friend knew I was into watches and he said I would appreciate it more than he would. He is right. I am saving up to get the movement fixed. There are lots of shops in Waltham Mass. that specialize in these watches. After all over 40 million were made. Mine is around the 2 million mark.

I pulled out my 1917 Hamilton 972 lever-set while watching this video. I find a person wearing a pocket watch more interesting than one wearing a Rolex. I occasionally wear my modern Orient pocket watch (48C40 movement, 40mm case, sapphire crystal, power reserve meter) with jeans. The watch and fob fit well in the coin pocket of the jeans. I am then ready to give physics lessons on pendulums. A 25cm pendulum has a period very close to one second.

To hold an American railroad pocket watch is to hold a piece of history of a nation ascending. With what other epoch is that possible?

    • @jakekaywell5972

To answer your question, post-WWII Soviet watches represent a nation ascending as well. Hope was in the air and that was represented in their designs.
