There are several affluent neighborhoods near where I live and it’s amazing what I occasionally find at the local Goodwill center. No stigma in finding a mint condition $450 Italian linen/silk sports jacket that fit perfectly for $12. Gladly gave them a $50 and declined the change. Win/Win.

I have shopped various second hand shops in multiple cities large and small and like others scored some major great finds e.g. almost new Brooks Brothers button down (retail $170), paid $6, spent another $25 on tailoring. Found a pair of Johnson Murphy dress shoes soles barely broken in,$8. A bit of insight how to pick shops to target (not all Goodwills are equal)-find out which resale shops have higher quality WOMENS clothing-these are more likely to have better quality Men’s stuff. How to find? In large cities stick with shops located in proximity to affluent or specialty artsy shopping. Best bet: ask women who are stylish (but wear clothing beyond their obvious financial reach) where the good resale shops are that have men’s clothing. Fact: there’s a lot of second, third, fourth hand Versace, Gucci and Jimmy Choo being worn out there by “smart” women on a budget!!

My best find was a silk and cashmere dressing robe, made in italy. Absolutely no wear. $5. Looked up the maker and you can't even touch their "low end" items for under $800.

I started buying used shoes from better brands about a year ago. Allen Edmonds, Church, Common Projects etc. All at less than $100 and I have not been disappointed once. It seems that people who buy better quality take better care of their shoes. If you spend a little time you can save hundreds on shoes with 90 to 95 percent of the wear left in them. Thanks for another great video.

I just love your advice, John. As I mentioned another time, people over a certain age can fall into a rut ( it can be tough to keep up with the latest trends!) Legend. Great tips, as always. My budget took a hit this past year but I still try to stay stylish at work. I've found that adding some stylish but cheaper sunglasses to my wardrobe has made a difference for me. A few $25 pairs of shades make me stand out against the guys who wear their wrap-around Oakleys with *everything*...

Legend...dary :) When there is a sale, I go with Brooks Brothers for shirts. They cost a bit more, but they last forever it seems due to superior materials. If you obtain a few classic long sleeve shirts, you are set for years. As I do not need to buy these shirts as often, I consider them to be a good deal.

Agree! After putting in the time and patience (instead of impulse and debt), it is so much more fulfilling because I could finally say that it is *time* to get that expensive watch with 100% confidence.
When I look at a special watch, I want to remember a life milestone - not monthly installments.
    IMO anyway 😆

Legend. Great advise as always. I shop on a budget for sure. I tend to spend more when it comes to my footwear though. Comfort and style are important but when it comes to my feet, I need quality as well. As for watches, I have also found really nice watches in the 50-100 dollar range and get compliments regularly. It's amazing how a simple design of a watch can still get compliments. As for my clothes I am still very much a work in progress. I think the key to budget shopping for clothes is finding items that can be versatile and incorporated into multiple outfits and various seasons.

I get my jeans from H&M and they are some of the best jeans I've ever bought! They fit great and they've held up. I have a couple pairs for work in a truck repair shop. I'm at times on my knees in the stockroom or out in the bays. The jeans have held up. Ive had some of them for over a year and besides being stained, they're still in one piece. No tears in the knees or anything. Haven't gotten that from Levi's.

Legend 👍 Thank you @40 Over Fashion . I am 42.7 years old and love thrift store shopping, although I primarily purchase shirts there, because less-worn pants that fit are a rarity in my experience. I often find better quality shirts in the thrift stores than many of the big brand retailers or department stores, and the prices are insanely affordable compared to even the so-called "discount" retailers.

Here is a motto I once saw stenciled on a wall of a high-end furniture store of all places. I thought it was genius, and I think it works in this context... "Be over-dressed or under-dressed, ALWAYS." I would add that i usually choose the over-dressed route, but if I under-dress, I always juice things up with my shoe choice.

This is a outstanding video post, John!! @5:39 I've mentioned a few times before in past posts that I shop Secondhand stores like Goodwill and 2nd Ave for clothing and footwear. Occasionally I shopped at Nordstrom Racks It's due to being a LMC guy. In the past, I shopped at Marshalls & TJ Maxx for clothing & footwear.
I can't tell you how much luck I had finding used but quality clothing from the big brands (Tommy Hilfiger, Chaps, Izod, Docker, Haggar, Paul Fredrick) and dress/casual shoes (Johnston & Murphy, Rockport, Nunn Bush) for much less. I found a couple pair of Johnston & Murphy shoes for much less and in great condition! It helps that Goodwill has color of the week sale or color of the day sale at 2nd Ave.
Goodwill Shoppers save even more when they buy, let's say, a dress shirt with the blue tag attached, it's the week's color sale is blue, and they save 50% of the price...75% if they have membership at Goodwill!
I'm fortunate to be living in a affluent suburb outside Washington DC where affluent residents donate a lot of clothes he/she don't wear anymore to Goodwill, 2nd Ave, and Savers...and the quality is either good, great, or excellent.
Thank you for hearing me out, John. Cheers! LEGEND!!

Legend! Another thing to keep in mind for dress shoes is that Allen Edmonds charges $125 for their standard recrafting package which includes replacing heels, including both the toplifts and heel bases, replacing the outsoles, leather welts and cork in-lays, refinishing and hand polishing the uppers and replacing laces with a brand-new pair. I've sent in several pairs over the years and they basically come back as a brand new pair of shoes. So if you find a pair of used Allen Edmonds shoes, you can get them like new for less than a $200 investment which is good considering that new they are now around $400 and you will have a pair of shoes that lasts for decades. I've had several pair for over 20-years now and they will likely last another 20.

LEGEND another tip on formal shoes similar to above from Brad is to get the resolved and revealed at a cobblers, I recently had a pair of brown brouges done at a small kiosk style cobbler/key cutting shop in my local shopping Mall, they came out looking even better than new and with rubber soles instead of leather they are even more comfortable and practical.

Yes to ‘gently used’. Yes to a tailor. Yes to spending a little more on shoes (just bagged some Cole Haan sneakers at Marshall for $48!). Yes to keeping the beard (and other facial hair!) trimmed. And then find what/where suits you. For me the staples are Banana Republic & J Crew (I rarely shop in the UK!) - mostly at their outlet stores. Legend-ary advice as always

Legend. Love the tips, John. One that I've followed that is working for me is using a tailor to improve fit. Even less expensive items level up when they fit just right. I get compliments whenever I wear tailored items. IMO, it is somewhat subliminal. Folks don't necessarily pinpoint what's different but do make holistic comments like, "Wow, you look great." Bottom line, well-fitting clothing looks high-end. Also, I find wearing the proper shoes plays a large part. One tends to look fashionable and well put together when the shoes are on-point.

Great suggestions. There are many ways to look stylish without spending too much and among them the easiest is to buy on sale!
I like American Eagle for shorts, polo shirts, T-shirts, shirts, jeans, chinos. It's inexpensive and many items are really nice, even if I know that as any fast fashion brands it won't last forever.
Allen Edmonds on sale or second hand is a great idea.

As someone who had to replace my wardrobe (weight loss), and faced the certainty that I would need to replace some items again, I've been very budget conscious. Here are some additional tips….
    1. Create a capsule or minimal wardrobe. Buying fewer items (obviously) reduces costs. In addition, by incorporating interchangeability, a small number of items begins to look like a much larger number of outfits. It also reduces tailoring costs, since fewer items need tailoring.
    2. When putting extra variety (or color) into a capsule or minimal wardrobe, less expensive items (shirts, pocket squares, socks) are a sensible place to buy extra items.
    3. If your body is fluctuating in size, and you're looking to invest in quality items that will last a long times, limit that investment into items that will still fit after your body changes. (Shoes, boots, and many accessories fit this category.)
    4. As mentioned in the video, secondhand can be a great way to save money. I've gotten some terrific deals on sports coats (and other items) by buying secondhand. On the other hand, I was spending *time* to save money. In addition to taking the time to search for items, I also had to take some time to educate myself on which items were quality (versus disposable fashion).

Enjoyed the video John! Those watches actually look great!
For me, the best advice I’ve received on this subject is indeed to shop used. Finding online used clothes retailers with a good return policy is the best scenario. Actually, most of my wardrobe I think consists of used clothing now. Leaves more money for tailoring. Yard sales are great as well, if you have the time and patience to browse through them.
And to be honest, I disagree with the fast fashion advice. In my experience, the quality is so low that the clothing they sell is just not so comfortable to wear, and never fits that well, at least on me.

Still waiting for a John goes to thrift stores video😉 and yes I remember the sneaker comparison video. It's hard to believe it's been that many years ago already. Have you thought of doing more of those types of videos ? Peace. 🙂

I haven't been to JCPenney's number 15 years. I recently took my aunt because she wanted to go and was shocked to see they had some great fashion at very affordable prices.

LEGEND, I recently discovered your channel and live the few videos I've watched so far, I'm 55, going through a divorce and started dating again so the content is just what I need. One lady I've been seeing for a while was very insistent that I shave the back of my hands, I'm blonde and have quite hairy arms and legs which I think look ok, I did shave the hair from my fingers between the knuckle and main finger joint before I met her because I thought it looked better but didn't really consider shaving the back if my hands. I'd appreciate your feedback on this subject and 'nanscaping in general because it appears to be a 'hot topic' recently.

Legend; Another secret is to buy gently used name brand clothes at places like Goodwill. I score great high end clothes there for next to nothing. You have to have the time to visit frequently and inspect the clothes well. Persistence is always rewarded.

Another quick groom hack not everyone may be aware of is to use your razor on your dry neck, not to wet it, trimming stray hair growth below your hair line, between haircuts
