They are wearing Oxfords with boot cut jeans, and all manner of casual clothes, even shorts. I love their look. It makes guys and girls, alike, look so stylish but fun. Dear Hugo, thanks for your videos and for sharing your fascinating knowledge with us. Could you sometime cover the issue of making/wearing a bespoke suit for/by a man using a wheelchair? In general, how to adapt the suit to any type of body. I have NEVER seen this topic discussed. Thanks again.
Dear Antonio, what an interesting question indeed ! I personally know a man (Adriano Cifonelli, the father of Lorenzo) who is paraplegic and who is extremely elegant. The jacket is not a problem. The most difficult part are the trousers (and more precisely how to measure them and with which material to make them considering that the back will rarely see the light). I promise I'm going to dig this question. Cheers, Hugo
Hugo and Sonya, thank you for this excellent video! The first 4.5 minutes provides a great perspecitve on today's market and the balance of the video covers oxfords nicely. Seeing the handsome wholecut shoe starting me thinking about the application of patina, which leads to other topics which could be spinoffs in regard to shoes, including shoe care and how to match shoes with the rest of your wardrobe. I look forward to this series and others. Well done!
Thank you for taking the time to write out your thoughts here, Mike, and I hope you try the wholecut ! Also, shoe care would be a great topic to cover. ~Sonya
QUESTION: at 18:03 you talk about a whole-cut, which I thought was a single piece of leather, stretched over a last and the sole attached. But in the shoe you’re holding I can see the seam up the back, is that really a whole cut? I hope so because I’ve suddenly got three pairs of shoes I didn’t know were whole-cut shoes. Please explain.
Good eye ! A whole cut can indeed have a seam -- in fact most do. Usually only skilled bespoke makers could produce a whole cut without a seam. My response remains relevant unless a high tech super bench made or automatic machine is invented to achieve the feat described. Cheers ! Sonya
@@SARTORIALTALKS Thank you for your answer, I'll be dropping in 'Whole-cut' a bit more when discussing my shoes which frequently come up in conversation - because they're so damn fine!

Very interesting video, Hugo! I, myself am young shoemaker currently working on my little oxford balmoral shoe collection and I trully fell in love with shoes. Thanks again, I subscribed and I'm looking forward that one day I might be able to meet with you! Best regards from Serbia, Aleksandar
Dear Aleksandar, we came to Serbia twice already for the 24hours of Elegance in Belgrade. Thank you for your kind words and good luck for your shoemaking carreer. Hugo & Sonya
Love the video, nice to see how you had one button on each sleeve unbuttoned to show functionality and your guest is a very gorgeous well dressed woman. 😉
Hugo and Sonya, first of all, thank you for your content and dedication. May I ask a question regarding the lining colour of shoes? Does the colour of the lining impact the formality or beauty of a shoe? For instance, could one have tan lining with black (formal) calfskin oxfords--or would that be considered informal and black shoes should only have black lining?
The lining in a pair of shoes is an interesting detail which can give your shoes a unique personality. No boundaries ! Because it's mainly for your eyes only (and the person who sees you removing your shoes!!). Best, Hugo
I must say this because a compliment is best when applied , Sonja , Hugo I think you both are stunning individuals. Lovely simply lovely individuals thank goodness for your contribution to the world.
I just want to discuss what you define as an 'austerity brogue' at the start. Here in London people would simply define the first shoe as a 'plain cap toe oxford'. To be called a brogue, a shoe requires 'brogueing', that is to say holes. To achieve brogueing, it is necessary to do the holes/punches on an extra layer of leather (otherwise you have holes in your shoe), that is why it is often done on the cap toe: you have a first layer and a second added on which the holes are punched. This requires more leather to be used. To achieve this effect without using so much leather (as would be required in times of austerity) and obtain an - austerity brogue -, the punching, stitching and detailing is all done on the same layer, trying to recreate the look , but without the use of extra layers of leather and also calling the lining into play to match colour, so that the holes don't have different colour ! I hope you will consider this and perhaps obtain your thoughts.
Dear William, thanks for your comment and your question. Actually I made a little mistake in the video as I show a plain cap toe oxford (as you rightly said) and not an Austerity Brogue. An "Austerity Brogue" is a shoe with nothing but a wingtip pattern on the upper. No perforations, pinking, or medallions. So it's true that It’s technically not a Brogue as there are no perforations. This is why, I suppose, the word "Austerity" is used also (which means "extreme plainness and simplicity of style or appearance"). Very strange indeed I agree, Cheers ! Hugo
Dear Hugo, thanks for your kind reply and your points made. The word 'austerity' always reminds me of the 1920s depression and I've always thought perhaps that is when the design came about. All the best,
Hi Hugo! I wish I can work and learn how to make such shoes. I have always been a fascinated how these shoes are made. And I am an avid fan. Thank you.
I love shoes but not at this level. But you guys are like telling stories like it's a fairy tale! i enjoy it and i like the choice of words, very classy and professional! amazing job.. 3yrs ago I was searching for a nice office shoes and i bumped into John Lobb Dubai Mall, i was fascinated by their shoes coz it's like a work of art... But now, watching your videos made me realise that one, John Lobb is one of the best if not the best, secondly, im now aware of other shoemakers and why the shoes are called as such. :) anyways.. i just really appreciate your videos :)
Good morning Chris, my shirts are bespoke shirts (custom made for me) by Marol in Bologna. My collar is a semi-spread collar and is quite long (in order to match with my head which is quite large). I hope I answered your question. Cheers ! Hugo
Hi Hugo and Sonya, I have enjoyed many of your videos. This year I have been refreshing my shoes, and I occasionally encounter Adelaide Oxfords. Now I have some ideas on what makes an Oxford an Adelaide Oxford, however, I would be very much interested on what you believe makes an Adelaide. Cheers
New to this group. Love this topic and love shoes. Not the best item to source in my country, unless you are in an elite group, but , Like Hugo, I will always stop and admire good looking shoes when I see them...anywhere. Thanks for the sharing and the info , guys.
I'm convinced that with the exception of the spectator shoe any of those shoes could be worn with just about any suit. The rules of matching shoes with a suit have relaxed so much through the years. And it's a good thing. Good video by the way. Sonya's a beautiful lady.
Interesting video about the history of the shoe but in Scotland we will wear brogues for formal wear if in Highland Dress or Tartan Trews. Brogue is Scottish Gaelic for shoe and is pronounced ‘broag’ with a hard R.
Many items of a man's wardrobe have their origins in British culture. However, even though there is very little or no reference at all to that point, the French couple's videos are interesting.
Dear Hugo and Sonya, this is the kind of knowledge that would be passed on from father to son! Thank you ever so much for making these videos.

Best, Hugo

But you didn't mention the main thing that makes an Oxford. The closed lacing. Should have compared it to a derby to clearly show the difference.
Of course it should have been compared great point. Hugo
Thank you for teaching the fundamentals, Hugo. Your videos are my version of your Sunday's back then since I don't have the means yet.

All the best,
Excellent overview. You and Sonya make a good team!
Hello there Lee -- Just now saw your comment. Cheers and hope all is well with you. Sonya

Thank you Sir. Maybe you'd be interested in our two most recent episodes dedicated a the review of 28 brands. Best, Hugo

What is the collar called on your dress shirts?
Good morning Chris, my shirts are bespoke shirts (custom made for me) by Marol in Bologna. My collar is a semi-spread collar and is quite long (in order to match with my head which is quite large). I hope I answered your question. Cheers ! Hugo
Thank you, you have real style. Keep the videos coming.
Thanks Chris!

Cheers
A masterpiece !!! Thanks a lotta for the Sharp information
Thank you Martin for your enthusiasm ! Cheers, Hugo

New to this group. Love this topic and love shoes. Not the best item to source in my country, unless you are in an elite group, but , Like Hugo, I will always stop and admire good looking shoes when I see them...anywhere. Thanks for the sharing and the info , guys.
We are very glad you're here Suleiman ! Sonya & Hugo
passion and excellence tradition and history summarized on a vidéo this man and fabulous
Merci Monsieur ! Hugo
I agree this is really great!
I'm convinced that with the exception of the spectator shoe any of those shoes could be worn with just about any suit. The rules of matching shoes with a suit have relaxed so much through the years. And it's a good thing. Good video by the way. Sonya's a beautiful lady.
Pertinent words, Michael. Thank you for commenting here ! Hugo and Sonya
Very informative video. Alot of education and history about mens shoes.
And Sonya looks hot! Her facial expressions are intriguing.
Thank you ! Hugo & Sonya
You explained it very informative and interestingly....thanks a lot Hugo and Sonya
You are very welcome Petrus ! Hugo & Sonya
Another great video
Thank you Sir for your encouragements and appreciation. Cheers, Hugo
Really appreciate these words of experience ! Precisely what we hoped for here. Sonya & Hugo
