Such a beautiful design. I like their low-tech, no-rush production philosophy. Talented workers allowed to work at a comfortable yet totally productive pace makes for happy workers and a great looking product. And it looks like they produce quite a few units out of that mill.
We own a large cutting board from Larchwood. It sits like an island and is in the middle of our kitchen. It's used everyday for everything and is as beautiful as the day it was purchased. Absolutely love it!
Grant Tomchuk Hi, May I know what is the condition of your cutting board now? How you take care of it? I learn people using beeswax and coconut oil ratio 1:3 to season the board. Do you know whether can I just using the coconut oil and omit the beeswax to do so? Thank you!

We love our Larch Wood Cutting board. My mother in law visited the mill and store and brought one home for us. Best cutting board I've ever tried and so beautiful.
I'm a window restorer that got into building blocks as thank you gifts for window customers. After owning my business for 4 years I have so much respect for what it takes to get to this level of manufacturing. Setting up processes that are consistent is fun and challenging
When art and craftsmanship meet... If only everything around would be made with such passion, care and love... Just outstandingly awesome!!! Bravo!!! :-)
This video should be called "How to mass-produce high-quality butcher block cutting boards". I've seen craftsmen make cutting boards using far more time-consuming techniques. I'm glad there are operations like this though, as I can't afford a one-off hand made board. My wife just gave me a beautiful teak butcher block cutting board or Christmas and I imagine it was made in a very similar way as these boards. Nicely done.
Although I've never worked with wood on this level before, after watching this I kinda want to work there. Looks like a very peaceful and calming job. Also, well paid if I'm not wrong.
the soft rubber feet also help to reduce noise when you are using a meat cleaver. it reduces the chopping noise/impulse passing through the board to the tabel and floor.
I love woodworking, it's my passion and what I do for a living, but I can't imagine working at a shop like this. Mass production shops take so much of the art and personal touches out of woodworking.
Fantastic work and serious attention to quality. When you say the grain works to expel the stains it sounds as if the wood is literally alive. Amazing stuff, congratulations to you folks.
Want to commend you for your safety processes. Workers have robust hearing and breathing protection and the shop looks very clean for a commercial woodshop enterprise! Bravo!
Outstanding video and story of your company. I was a little surprised that an end grain cutting board could be made from a softwood. I use primarily hard maple with walnut, cherry, and some exotics for contrast. The bit at the end showing the natural healing properties of the wood was great. It's always been a dream of mine to ride my motorcycle to NS. Been to most provinces in Canada and rode the Trans-Canada HW from BC to Ontario.... This would be 24 hours driving time for me (80 miles southwest of Washington, DC); No biggie, I rode to Alaska. Thank you.
amazing artisanal craftsmanship. thank you for insisting on making a product of this quality and doing it in such a responsible way. I'm definitely buying one.
I made an end grain cutting board back in 1971 and I'm still using it. No more for cutting but placing hot food dishes on. I resurfaced it after her in doors decided she wanted to tenderise meat on it with a meat mallet. Anyway it came back great. Yep they last for years, decades.
i'm only 12 and this is my dream job i love carpentry and woodwork i have a mouse sander and drill and band saw and many other tools made especially for carpentry and woodwork i'm definitely going to make something similar in the future
It actually does smell really nice! And different woods, different smells... Some smell sweet, and some smell spicy (like black pepper, for example)... And working with your hands (no matter what medium you're using) is so amazing and relaxing!!! I think you'd love working with wood!
I own such a board and a good knife and I really like it! I even keep bringing it with me to cook for other people. My knife stays sharp much more longer and the surface stays as new. It's possible to see cuts but these get smaller over time and blend in. Mine is made out of pear wood and has been made in south germany. The one side has a faerly deep juice rim carved into it and it really helps keeping the counter clean. It doesn't have any rubber feed so I put a damp towel between the counter and my board. It does the job :-)
Thats mad, it's only a matter of time before he ends up cutting his fingers. It only takes a slight lapse in concentration. In the UK and EU we have regulations to make it safer for workers. All saws have to have a riving knife and top guard I believe. Plus you'd be expected to use a push stick rather than your fingers.
Worst thing is that, because we ended up on this vid, TH-cam is going to recommend more and more videos like this to us. So we're gonna fuck up our lives even more. That sucks.
"Larch, sometimes known as Tamarack, also known as Juniper". Larches are conifers in the genus Larix, in the family Pinaceae. Junipers are coniferous plants in the genus Juniperus of the cypress family Cupressaceae. Sorry, I know I'm being a pedant, but I'm just saying... whatever, they are certainly nice boards.
yes - Juniper is different - somehow it became the local colloquial name for Larix in Cape Breton, actually 'dirty juniper'. Possibly from the early Scottish settlers.
There is a lot of juniper where I am, stinky wood, and people can be quite allergic to it too. But does it have the same quality for a cutting board then?

+GuitarGod Joe The place had a very good atmosphere, like everyone was happy and proud of their work. :)
It certainly seems so. Personally, being from So Cal, I could never get used to their climate. Too cold!

This is so close to home. I love strolling through youtube and finding videos from my province
Good for you
My father actually bought a massive board from them, it is the size of a small table. These boards are amazing and worth every penny to purchase!
We love our Larch Wood Cutting board. My mother in law visited the mill and store and brought one home for us. Best cutting board I've ever tried and so beautiful.
These are the best boards ever !

I love watching people who are enthusiastic about that they do :D
I can use this cutting boards as an artwork for my kitchen, no way I cut anything and scratch the surface of this beautiful piece of art.
This video should be called "How to mass-produce high-quality butcher block cutting boards".

Nicely done.
I have two of these boards, absolutely love them and enjoyed this video very much.
What size do you recommend?
I wish you could "love" a video. This is such an islander operation, you guys are wonderful.
Good to see you think about the end look RIGHT FROM the start of the process. Very nice result.

This seems like a very good company. A bunch of older people that seem to like their job and care about the finished products. No children.

Apart from the guy pushing tiny blocks of wood through the cross cut saw with his bare fingers and no guard or riving knife on the saw...

Cape Breton (where this video was filmed) would be a fantastic place to ride a motorcycle through, you wouldn't regret it! :)
amazing artisanal craftsmanship. thank you for insisting on making a product of this quality and doing it in such a responsible way. I'm definitely buying one.
I am watching this in November 2021 and I hope that you are still doing well. You make a very beautiful product.
don't know why this showed up on my recommended, but glad it did..that was truly interesting...thanks for sharing.
beautiful product, I'm going to build one as a project.

Brilliant idea with those rubber feet. Off to the hardware store so I can customize my current chopping board.
Take pride in your work like Larch Wooden board company. cool. love it
I love your cutting boards, they look so beautiful. Congratulations from the Basque Country!
That was really interesting. After watching this it should be clear to everybody that boards like this cannot be sold for USD 2,50.
Best cutting board I ever had
what a wonderfully entertaining education about wooden cutting boards. Love the work
I own such a board and a good knife and I really like it!

Yes, that is a lapse in safety protocol, on a fairly dangerous tool no less.

Hi from Ecuador very nice,,
Ear protection, eye protection, but at 7:46 that guy needs a pusher.
What a mission to own one of those board. Hey here my new cutting board that I have to dedicate 4 hrs a month to for maintenance.
Where do you get the 4 hour figure?
+woodsprout of course I'm exaggerating genius. Even 5 minutes wasting "caring for my cutting board is to much"
What kind of cutting board do you suggest then? Fast food?
