Portable Air Purifiers

  • A lot of people have been asking about portable air purifiers and whether I recommend them.
Long story short, focus first on your masks, hand sanitizer and face shield. If you still have budget left, you could consider buying one of these.
In this video I tested a generic from Shopee and the AvicheM1 Philippines
Unlike larger air purifiers that have HEPA filters which capture and trap particles, these portable purifiers just push the particles away or cause them to drop.
Personally I use one, especially when I'm in an enclosed space. But there's no promise that it will protect you from you-know-what.

What a fabulous experiment. I find wearing an Ible definitely helps with allergies to paint and smoke/pollution.

you can estimate the negative ions theyre making by plugging in a probe of a multimeter into the ground bottom prong of a wall outlet (or maybe more safely, put it on anything thats grounded) and then holding the other probe a set distance from the emitter on a voltage setting. might have to go into the really low voltage setting. this will be highly dependent on the air humidity, room temperature, and number of particulate/dust/aerosols present... so you cant compare different locations/days.
an important point is that while these do drop out particles from the air, they will also ironically attract some to them, so its my opinion that they should be placed in areas of a house where youre not likely to hang out in, like next to the front/back doors. the ones people wear dont really make sense to me because of that. they will end up acting like the space suits on the Apollo moon missions where the US discovered the astronaut's suits were wearing out really quickly because they would become statically charged and attract the coarse moon dust to them. future moon missions are going to employ a static charge repulsion mechanism. its the same thing with virus/bacteria laden water droplets/aerosols. if youre wearing these around your neck, youre going to attract more potentially infectious particles to your clothing. not sure how to calculate the sterilization potential of these... i doubt the amount of static charge and free radicles they produce has much of an effect. if there is any effect its from the small amount of ozone they tend to create. the ozone is a little controversial, its true that in very small concentrations there is some natural biologic signaling from ozone... but the same thing is actually true of carbon monoxide lol. i think generally the risk from the ozone is enough to keep them far away from you and not running all the time in the same room you occupy most... probably ideally next to the front door. another important factor is making sure theyre close enough to the floor to statically charge the floor. i imagine from the dust ring they produce over time, that you want them to be about 1 foot from the floor. the material of the floor is important also. hardwood floors are notoriously easier to keep clean compared to linoleum/vinyl floors because of the static charge they tend to hold. probably not much benefit to having them above a plastic floor compared to things like tile/stone.

Does portable air purifier helps you prevent from smelling bad odor like cigarette smoke or mosquito coil smoke?

I have some doubts. The efficacy of an air purifier depends on the size of the room it's trying to clean. This is why you need more or bigger purifier if you have a large room. The jar test shows it's working really well because it's a confined controlled space. But I really hope this product really works in cleaning the air around you. I hate to see a trend that will only contribute to e-waste.

As explained in the video, these don't clean the air. They simply create ions which attach to particles in the air, causing them to drop and cling to the nearest surface.
Any kind of airflow, like wind or a fan would likely reduce the effectiveness.
And there's a balance between how many ions you generate. Top many and it can become dangerous (you can find cases in America about large air purifiers that also included ion generators)
Even presidents from around the world can be found using similar devices but the effectiveness is minimal. Better than nothing but other things like a good mask, face shield, socoa distancing and hand washing are more important.

Really with an ion detector youll find you need about 250 million ions in a continuous stream to Really change the air in a room . Outside or moving quickly, unless its in your motorcycle helmet air inlet , your treating someone elses air

Why not try doing this with a bigger bottle/mayonaise bottle... similarities to the possible air volume inside face shield....

They do something, just not what most people think.
That's why I suggest other options before considering spending any money on these.

This machine is not really that helpful on my opinion because if your in inclosed room this will help us much as it can but in open area that different story (only my opinion)

Yeah it won't do much outside, especially if there's any wind.
I sometimes use one, but mostly just in small enclosed spaces like inside a car or bus.
There's science to the way they work but people need to understand exactly how they work and the limitations.

If it took over 1 minute to purifier the air in a tiny jar/glass, what make you think it will be able to purify the air in an open space before you inhale the polluted air into your lung first lol?
