I love Alice Walker's (Author of The Color Purple) quote: "Expect nothing. Live frugally on surprise." This doesn't mean to have low expectations. It means you release or surrender the expectations that you have made up in your mind. Then there's no disappointment because there is no expectation attached to the experience. This has helped me tremendously in my marriage and friendships.

I think high expectations and low expectations are equally dangerous. I think you set expectations based on what you know or experience in each interaction/situation. I feel you tho Josh disappointment is tough What I try to do is assess why I'm disappointed and get the learning from it and move forward fresh each day. I found myself falling into the flex culture as well and I think what helped me realize is, I asked myself, “ if this photo wasn’t going to be posted, would I still be doing/wearing this?” I ended up taking a social media break for a few weeks and for the most part, now I’m barely on social media. Sometimes it can become so toxic and I’ve just felt so much at peace being off of social media, best decision I’ve ever made to just live in the moment.
My highschool yearbook quote was “Expectations lead to disappointments”. There’s nothing wrong with having a vision or dreaming big, but not everyone has the same visions or dreams unless you voice that.

I used to keep a post it note on my computer at work which said lower your expectations. I worked at a hotel and I always had way higher expectations of my staff. I learned patience when I had kids. I had to get over my OCD’ness real quick🤣

Yea I feel josh on having low expectations like Isi said it was a way to guard my heart. Because when something was promised or told to me and would not come to light, it hurt so now it’s become to the point that I don’t like to hope or don’t want to look forward to something that could potentially be taken away, because then I’ll be hurt. So unless, I got that item or thing I wished for I’ll celebrate once I’ve received it/achieve it. It’s something I got to work on and dig deep on cause I’m all about growing and being a better person. But when it comes to people I expect, respect, truth, etc. the bare minimum as a human being with interactions but as we get closer I expect there to be more like support, etc. Life is all about growing, and I really admire these deep dives that allow me to recognize that I’m not the only dealing with this and I’m not the only one with this mindset of growing and being real 🤎
The grandmother bit was deep. I calculated her birth year and it was 1932. Like damn she was really alive and a full adult in the civil rights times and the fact that she remembers her grandma as a slave just shows why people can never say “it was so long ago, just forget about it” when there are living people that still have those memories. History has also taught us the civil rights were further away than they are by all these black and white pictures when it’s not that far. It just shows how far yet so close we’ve come. This society obviously has better to do with handling systematic racism or covert racism and micro aggressions but it’s a lot better than segregation, Jim Crow and slavery times which weren’t as far off.

I really understand Joshs view of expectations. I’m 17 and I still live with my parents. My mom gets so mad when I don’t believe her promises but it’s like my whole childhood mostly from my parents but also friends no one ever keeps their promises so my expectations of people are just naturally low.

I really love these chats. The only thing I personally disagree on (and I don't think you guys are wrong, I just feel differently) is that when someone takes time to bring up something that's bothering them, I think it actually is a great time to bring up grievances that you may have and in the opposite role I usually provide the opportunity and hope that they would take it to be real with me about their feelings and ways that they may feel slighted by me. I definitely agree that when confronted you have to first digest what's said and put your ego aside to acknowledge their feelings and try to make it right. But once you have given it a listen and talked it thorough to come to an amicable conclusion, I think it's a great time to just get everything out so that you can be on a level field again. I would hate if I tell someone they hurt me and they didn't tell me that they were also hurt by me. We just need to respect each other's sides.

what if changing your thought process after expectations aren't met? who says they have to be set low, maybe setting them high and preparing properly for things if you receive a low outcome... maybe knowing how to pivot after your high expectations aren't met may work also. Everyone when they’re younger believes the same way their house is ran, is the same as everyone else and it can be a rude awakening when you realize that’s not the case
I would say friend meetings are very important!! I started them w/ my closest friends that I’ve developed as of late cause we had lotssss of things that were subliminal issues that never got resolved or we didn’t understand something after trying to address it too many times. And yes it can sometimes seem like it’s trying to be avoided because ppl don’t like confrontation they think it’s a g@ng up moment. But the way we hit the nails in the wall for all the issues that have crept up is we ask everyone’s input even if it was maybe one person that we needed to address more at the time, just so it doesn’t seem like we’re tag teaming up on one person as if we all can’t work on things. Things fester up so everyone needs something to reflect on, to in turn work on.

it's refreshing to see other ppl my age think the same as me. My boyfriend is so into crypto and investing and i have a growing small business and presence on tiktok. Everyone around me questions the way i spend my money lol. they clown me because I have a 05 chevy cavalier. *shrugs* it still runs great and im really investing and growing my business. material things are not important to me. so glad you guys are putting these bugs into other people's ears

Thank you to for this conversation especially the last bit on adult friendships and expectations because I'm currently dealing with that situation with my friend group since highschool and I would love to try and get them all together to talk about it and be like okay once and for all but they hate conflict and I'm getting tired or being the peacemaker. I'm just trying to figure out my words and you guys placed a bit of what I wanted to say I may just send this video to my friends and be like yup we do this so let's talk. what if changing your thought process after expectations aren't met? who says they have to be set low, maybe setting them high and preparing properly for things if you receive a low outcome... maybe knowing how to pivot after your high expectations aren't met may work also. To the point where you don't let it affect you negatively, and possibly being able to pick up and carry on better after...yall got my mind thinking thts all... i love these talks w/ y'all SO MUCH. They are so neutering to multiple aspects of a persons life.. 💎s

I would say friend meetings are very important!! I started them w/ my closest friends that I’ve developed as of late cause we had lotssss of things that were subliminal issues that never got resolved or we didn’t understand something after trying to address it too many times. And yes it can sometimes seem like it’s trying to be avoided because ppl don’t like confrontation they think it’s a g@ng up moment. But the way we hit the nails in the wall for all the issues that have crept up is we ask everyone’s input even if it was maybe one person that we needed to address more at the time, just so it doesn’t seem like we’re tag teaming up on one person as if we all can’t work on things. Things fester up so everyone needs something to reflect on, to in turn work on.
