For many years tapes of an album made by singer/songwriter Peter Sarstedt had been thought lost forever. Recorded in the seventies with musicians from his home in Copenhagen, the album of original compositions was never released. Over the years the tapes were destroyed and it was only by chance that the album's producer came across some safety master copies during
a clean out of his loft. He immediately had the delicate tapes digitally mastered, so now we can hear these lovely songs as the composer originally intended.

Very few songs tell such a story, such as this one does. I heard this back in the 60s and, even as I am now approaching 77, it remains one of my very favourite songs. God bless you, Peter, rest in eternal peace, and thank you for such a timeless song.

Sorry for your loss Steve , i lost my younger brother july 7/22 , he was clean and sober for 9 years , then his girlfriend died oct /21 and he went downhill , returning to drugs . When its our siblings Steve it seems to hurt even more because we grew up with them , went to school with them , fought and played , laughed together , shared a room . Your sister suffered and so did my brother and we suffered along with them . We have to go on and sometimes thats harder , i pray for comfort and i hope you do too .

T.L.Chivz. Well, so nice to hear local place-names. I'm at Hawthorn, Now, but grew up at Park Orchards, When there were orchards there. Donvale, & Warrendyte, where we used to play down the old Gold-mines.
Bet yer drove back to EAST Ringwood, via Springvale Rd, then? I don't like the way all our suburb-names are being changed, like North Balwyn (?Calling, ?Skyhooks) to Balwyn North, & East Doncaster, to Doncaster East. etc. Go Well.

Memories! I was an 18 year old when this came out. We had a tiny Dansette (mono) player, and you had to go down the road and actually purchase the record. The clunk of the needle hitting the record and then the crackle of the dusty bits. We all loved it. It was an amazing change to the strictly "British" sounds on our other stuff. We were just emerging from post second world war austerity, and my Dad had found work driving coaches in Switzerland in the summer for tourists, and then back to cold old UK for oil deliveries by road in the winter. I was just learning French and our family was starting out on a long assocation with France. We had a young German boy staying with us, to help him learn English. He was a cheeky overconfident lad!. He stole our copy of this and took it back home with him. Our high street still only had fish and chip shops and local pubs. Now is it full of food from around the world, we drink loads of wines from around the world, and our family moved to France years ago. The merging of many cultures was amazing. Sad that some people are frightened of it, and want to "get back" to a forgotten UK "golden history" that never really existed.

Peter's elder brother Richard had already had a no1 hit in the UK, "Well I Ask You" in 1961, when he sang under the name Eden Kane. When Peter reached no1 it made them the first brothers to have solo no1s in Britain. In 1976 their other brother Robin, reached 3 in the UK with his version of Hoagy Carmichael's "My Resistance Is Low," enabling the Sarstedt clan to become the only three brothers in British chart history to rack up separate solo hits.

I was 20 when this song was released and it has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. He and his brother Eden Kane came from from Croydon, my place of birth and Peter died in Sussex, my current home county, so the emotional connections are with more than the music. His last few years were very sad, especially for somebody who gave us so much pleasure. Thank you Peter.

Bingo. If I had to pick three songs that tell their stories with such lyrical beauty that the tears simply well up, it would be the ones you picked. You have great taste, and a great heart. "Two children begging in rags". "Through the door there came familiar laughter". "Why did summer go so quickly, was it something that you said?" Epic songwriting from the 60's. Which is why I'm stuck there.
