  • Brandon and Dan start off, as normal, with a food heist. Today’s twist, though, is that it’s a historical food heist centered around coffee! They then move their conversation back to musicals, both on the stage and in cinema.

    One thing that bothers me about the Madonna version of Evita is that Eva sings Another Suitcase in Another Hall. Having Eva sing the part turns her into a victim rather than a steamroller who flattens everyone in her way.

      Hadestown is YA? I didn't think so. I feel like most of the broadway fanbase is YA these days in general just by the nature of theater kid culture, though.

    • @asf8648

      HadesTown is pretty much the polar opposite of targeting YA. It’s popular in spite of being what it is, a musical adaptation of Greek mythology with folk music.

    Cats IS so Amazing.... in that its so Amazingly BAD and if you go into it expecting to witness how terrible it is you are in for a good time. Its like watching The Room. You dont watch the room because its a good movie... You watch it because its a terrible movie... probably as bad as Scotchka would actually taste. It is so very rare that there are movies that are so bad that they end up being cult classics that are a must see for bad film viewers so Cats is in fact amazing

    that may be an american perspective. tom shippey has an interesting presentation on the subject, here is an excerpt:
    'There was ambitious literary fantasy, mostly British. There was popular mass market fantasy, mostly American. What Tolkien did was make literary fantasy mass market, or if you prefer, he made mass market ambitious and literary.'

    Oh my, I am a huge history nerd it seems because listening you two floundering about history really ground my gears: Louis 14th(yes he was called the Sun King and well known for expanding Frances borders, building the Versailles palace as means of controling the nobility and many other things as well), French revolution being ~70 years off(it was about 74~ and the one who got beheaded was Louis 16th who was great great great grandson of the Sun King), and whether Yemen was part of Ottoman Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries (yes it was, at least partically - the first Ottoman expedition happened in 1538, the 2nd in 1630s. Before that, there was another huge entity controlling huge swaths of Yemeni land - the Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt.)

    • @Aaden90
      @Aaden90 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that section also had me reacting more emotionally than I would have thought it should.
      Just for some context on Ottomans that might give some clue about their status in the 1600s: they sacked/conquered Constantinople in 1453 and besieged Vienna in 1683. Both of which are rather important events in Christian/Western/European history. And both of which point to the fact that the Ottoman Empire did very much exist in the 1600s and it was quite the powerhouse. Two valuable events to remember when it comes to thinking about how Europe looked like at a given point in time.

    Hey Brandon, fellow author but not anybody important yet. I was wondering what your method is for releasing books. I grew up in Philadelphia and even after finishing writing some of my books, I'm not sure about the best way to go about getting them out there. I write mostly philosophy, science fiction, and fantasy. What is your best advice for getting yourself out there once you've completed your story? Get it edited or figure out how to publish it? How does one make a book of theirs become something relevant? How do you get your name/work out there in a relevant and healthy way?

    As a huge musical fan, this episode was great. I absolutely love Sondheim, and I do enjoy Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals. I completely agree with Dan Wells' thought on Webber. He is an excellent musician, but a terrible story teller. His best shows were based on preexisting stories, and the one time I watched a show that was also an original story was terrible.
