    I do not taste any peaty smoke in the Glenfiddich 15. I tend to taste it more in Islay Scotches, and Highland Scotch. Not so much from many of the Speyside Scotches. I am a fan of Scotch, and Bourbon. I don't have much experience with Irish Whisky, but I'm eager to learn.

      Glenfiddich has much more of a big oak flavour, at least from my Glenfiddich 18 and the other ones I have tasted. Glenfiddich uses unpeated barley. The peppery flavour is from the oak. Peat has more of an earthy flavour.

    Personally I don't like bourbons at all. I find them too sweet. Irish whiskey tastes so smooth that it goes down as milk. I really enjoy it. My favourite is definitely scotch. I just love everything about it. The taste, the hit the smell.

    So many things wrong with what you said in this video. Bourbon isn't only distilled in Kentucky. It can be distilled anywhere in the U.S. Not all Irish whiskies are triple distilled and not all Irish whiskies are pot stilled. Glen fiddich doesn't get peat smoked at all its sherry cask aged. Don't know where you got smoke from on that one.

    Would love to try the Glenfiddich, but as of now the best scotch I've ever had was johnny Walker 18 yr old platinum. I find that scotch is basically like sipping on liquid cigar. Or imagine sniffing an ashtray, yet throw in some nutty notes and that's what I get from scotch. Definitely an acquired taste, and I love it. Definitely a bourbon guy, but Man Scotch has its own character so much so that it's definitely noticable between the 3. As for Bourbon my favorite is anything Buffalo Trace distilled. I grew up in KY so it's always been a thing, but grew up on the wild turkey 101.

    Glenfiddich distillery (Willian Grand) from speyside region is not a peated whiskey at all. Islay whiskey and some Highland region( Ardmore, Highland Park ,etc) whiskey are peated

    • @MisterLaJoye
      @MisterLaJoye ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what I was thinking when I watched this. I don't understand why he'd be smelling peat in Glenfiddich when it has absolutely none.

  • @Aqvavitae

    Scotch can be made from lots of grains: wheat, corn barley... single malt is made from 100% barley, but that's only 1 in 10 bottles sold. Still, a cool overview video. Kudos.

  • @markheywood8236
    @markheywood8236 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Some excellent general info and guidance. Thank you.
    But I think you maybe picked the wrong whiskies to prove those points. The Glenfiddich 15 is a particularly sweet speyside whisky having been aged in sherry casks. Hardly any peat or smokiness at all. Smooooooooth. Perhaps an Islay, Talisker or at least a peated Speyside would have been better. I also think that's a particularly harsh/potent bourbon and not necessarily typical of sweet kentucky whiskey.

    Thanks! Very Interesting!
    I'm a bourbon drinker - and I DON'T mean Tennessee sour mash whisky!
    Had not thought of the cooler climate as a reason/need to age Irish & Scotch whiskey's so much longer but certainly makes sense.
    I posted this on another video from the Teeling Distillery and would love to get your thoughts.
    "Just an observation from someone who knows just enough to be dangerous.
    And I haven't had any Irish whiskey is decades.
    I thought one of the effects of multiple distillations is that it removes the taste aspects of the mash. IE vodka is distilled down to what is defined as an "odorless tasteless liquid"
    So it seems they are triple distilling down to what is 160 proof grain alcohol then relying on the aging to impart the flavor.
    I'm not being critical just wondering if that's the "essence" of Irish whiskey."
    Also do you know of good recipes for Irish Whiskey and what type yeast do they use?
    Thanks again!

      @spartacusoconnell3701 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well since you're talking about distillation there is probably no point in comparing bourbon to good scotch or Irish whiskey as they are both made in pot stills and bourbon in Coffey stills which strips the flavours from the wash. However if you can recommend a good American pot still whiskey I'd love to try it

      I've had the good fortune to get to try Pappy 12 and 15 year, and they are great bourbons, the 15 was probably up as one of the top 3 I've ever had, but trust me when I tell you they aren't even remotely worth the absurdly high price that it goes for, it's just a marketing scheme by BT to be able to get more money for less bourbon

  • @travissloan5296

    If I’m not mistaken bourbon doesn’t have to be made in Kentucky right? It can be anywhere in the US?

  • @kellywellington7122
    @kellywellington7122 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmmm...I quite appreciate Glenfiddich 15 Solera, but there is no peatiness to its character. Anything tasted as 'smoke' is probably 'maltiness'. I consider that Glenfiddich to be a sherried single malt. Scotches can vary from entirely unpeated and only aged in bourbon barrels, to various levels of peating, and various levels and different sources of finish barrels from fortified wines (sherry, port, sauternes), so that a bewildering array of flavor profiles is available. So, aside from ABV, unchilled filtration, and artificial coloring or not, a Scotch drinker attempts to ascertain whether the distillate is peated, and whether it is sherried, and to what levels and by what means.
