A great analogy for the complexity of flavors. Maybe I just haven't had a large enough variety of the Irish, but they've always seemed shallow in their depth of flavors, even while being very very good. Bourbons and Rye can be very complex by comparison, even if you're using a similar mash. Regional grains and styling in the USA can create that complexity.
I will say that two of the things we Americans and the Irish can get along on are our preferences for 1: drinking and 2: fighting. :D

(The rest of the mash is usually filled out with malted barley and either rye or wheat.) The mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less, put into the barrel at 125 proof or less, and it must not contain any additives. The distillate must be aged in a new charred oak barrel."

Americans actually use both metric and imperial. When doing science experiments in school we always used metric because it's easier, but if we're building a house or whatever we use imperial.

@EveryChevyChase And everyone forgets that the UK isn't 100% metric. They still use miles per hour instead of kph. And IIRC they could still measure a few food things in imperial. I want to say beer was one?? After all, isn't the most popular phrase "Give me a pint"?

American of Irish descent here. Irish whiskeys, to me, are generally *smoother,* or what I refer to as "cleaner," partly because they're triple-distilled. Bourbons are rough on my pallette, heavier because they're aged in *original* oak casks while most other whiskeys are aged 8n used Bourbon barrells. Favorite Irish whiskey is Jameson Cask Mates Stout Edition and favorite Bourbon (so far) is Woodford Reserve.

I wouldn't feel bad for them thinking they betrayed their country.
I feel like people inherently appreciate liquors from other countries more than their own cause they aren't accustomed to it.
I live in Kentucky so of course Bourbon is huuuuge here and it always has a warm place in my heart, but Irish whiskey is always my go to and has been for years, Jameson Black Barrel being one of those

@@Evinthal84 yup, especially true when they are cask strength. Have a bottle of Octomore where that is especially prevalent. As it is it isn't all that smokey, but with 2-3 drops of water you suddenly get all that nice smoke and lots of fruit on the nose. Really fascinating how that works out.
Personally I wouldn't start with an ice cube but slowly add drops of water until you reached the point where it suits your tastes, as you always can add more later on that way, but can't take the water out when you've put too much in it.

Teeling is tasty, got a little bit left on my shelf of that one. I'm kind of disappointed not seeing Knappogue castle whiskey (Irish) or Bib and Tucker Bourbon (American), those two are by far my favorites in either category/ country for the type. Highly recommend both of them.
*also- we use both imperial and metric in the USA when it comes to measurements, there are millimeters and centimeters alongside inches on our rulers and measuring tapes, and use both types in our socket and crescent wrenches, to name a few things (most car battery connection terminals are a 10mm socket or crescent btw). One yard equates to 0.914 meters, so they're also nearly the same haha.
