Regarding bourbon, you forgot to mention they need to be aged in new charred oak barrels. Otherwise it’s not a bourbon.

40% is 40% (40% Alkohol, or ABV) and not some stupid abv X2 = 80 proof. Some drunk dude came up with multiplying it.

From someone that drinks both scotch typically is a much more mellow and smoother sipper than bourbon. That “Kentucky hug” can be very strong at times. I think most bourbons need to be watered down a bit. Some at 125 proof is way too strong. This is just my experience. To each his/her own.

Hang on, wait. Unless I missed it or am completely wrong… in order for whiskey to be considered bourbon it must also be stored in brand new American oak barrels, never reused. Other whiskeys might be placed in recycled, and certainly bourbons can be double oaked or toasted, or placed in rum casks, etc. on their second round. However, the stringent requirement for bourbon to be in new oak barrels is a qualifying factor along with the mash bill being 51% minimum of corn. Most have a much higher mash percentage around 70% which gives bourbon a smoother pull and experience. Along with the versatile mash combinations of barley, rye, and wheat it separates itself strong with unique expressions compared to Scotch. The video also did not include that Bottle in Bond requirement of 4 years minimum with 100 proof/50 ABV was designed to have it gov. regulated for QC. Lastly, while bourbon is generally cheaper, most bourbon connoisseurs drink slightly more expensive bourbon than entry floor offerings and at a much higher proof than 40 ABV. Many enjoy cask strength and barrel proofs along with private selects, state or store picks that are all quite special. Nothing wrong with a 93/94 sipped near that’s a banger, but lot people seek the flavor bombs of 100-120+ proof with a rock/cube or neat to sip. After sipping on a 115 and enjoying the nose and expressions a 80 proof Scotch is as easy to drink as Diet Coke. Just my opinion, and I grew up on Scotch and my family is Scottish, removed by only one generation on my mom’s side. *I could be absolutely wrong tho! Just my $.02.

After watching this video, I think I may be a Scotch type of person. For MANY years, all I drank was light beer. I'll be 50 this year and just bought my first bottle of whiskey last week - Gentleman's Jack. I never knew why, but something about Scotch always sounded appealing to me. I've smelled it a few times, but I've never really drank it. I love Smokey and Spicy flavors and don't really care too much for the bitterness I taste in whiskey although I'm becoming more accustomed to it. Looks like I have to start doing my research on scotch.

I have friends that drink expensive scotch and even though they act like it’s awesome - it’s not. I’ve sipped many of their trophy scotch and have NEVER liked any of them. I believe when I’m chill axing NO ONE need approve of or pressure me to go with the mobs opinions. So over the years I have toured the adult beverage industry with only myself to please regardless of “public opinion”. Consider these selections and save yourself THOUSANDS of dollars…
      Bourbon:
I ♥️ Weller & 1792 both fantastic and not pricey.
      Gin: Gordon’s
Tequila: ♥️ 1942 hands down but it’s EXPENSIVE to consume, George Clooney “fabricated” a tequila that is VERY similar but it is “manipulated” - still pricey but enjoyable.
Vodka: Grey Goose & Sky Goose is a “little” pricey, Sky is very good and more economical.

Bourbon is higher proof, sweater, and cheaper. So I can afford a longer aged bottle. Plus the climate in southern US is more conducive for fermentation. Sweet Carmel and vanilla flavors make a cigar pairing ideal. The charring of the barrels adds another delicious flavor. Don't get me wrong a good bottle of scotch is amazing. I just can't afford the longer aging it requires.

Since most whiskey is tripple distilled to get rid of toxic substances, the grains, such as corn, rye barley, etc don't matter much. Some scotch's have a smokey taste because of burning peat to dry the barley. Most of the rest of whiskeys taste will come from the barrels used for aging. Bourbon producers must use new oak barrels. Most other whiskey producers employ barrels formerly used for bourbon or wine to reduce costs and add flavor. I personally prefer whiskey aged in wine barrels.

Bourbon has to be aged for atleast 4 years. In un used new white oak charred barrels. Bourbon has to have atleast a 51 percent corn in the mashbill. But different bourbons have different mashbills, a bourbon like makers mark for example is a wheated bourbon, which also contains wheat in the mashbill. Bourbon is gonna be more of a caramel, toffee, oak pallet, as of scotch you get more of a smokey flavor with an ashtray type of taste in the pallet. Try Johnny Walker 18 yr old for a first time scotch and you will be pleased. As for bourbon try Some eagle rare or Old Forester. Definitely different but bourbon takes the cake over scotch any day for me. But that JW 18 platinum scotch is actually 1 of my favorite whiskeys all time. This video is wrong about bourbon aged 4 months to 2 years. Bourbon has to be aged atleast 4 years an can't be over 125 proof. I grew up in Kentucky and my grand dad is a bourbon guru, and Also there is a difference if a bourbon is made anywhere else other than Kentucky, KY being the KY straight bourbon whiskey, and other places can't call it straight bourbon whiskey. But can still be considered a bourbon as long as the mashbill is 51 percent corn.

As long as bourbon is barrelled correctly, aging really has no requirement for how long or less. It can go for any amount of time. But, there are two exceptions to this - straight bourbon whiskey has to be aged for a minimum of two years, and bottled-in-bond must be aged for at least four years.
