I have already ranted in the comments of your previous videos about how I feel about DC as a whole and what my favorite runs are. Instead I will throw a few points of opinion in an itemized fashion on why this sucked/failed.
    1. No one wanted this story they want something closer to what drew them in at their start as a reader.
    2. This did not appeal to a lot of if any new readers period.
3.Jessica and Simon did not get enough of their own time before the introduction of teen lantern and Jo Mullins. The Sam Humphries run was a good start that was undercut by Tim Seely’s bad writing after. (Side note I used to like Sam as a person now I do not.)
    4. John Stewart deserved better this was his time to shine as a leader of lanterns again not aNewgods/Ion ripoff. Venditti did it better.
    5. The power battery has already been destroyed countless times. It will always come back try a new idea.
    6. You should never admit your personal bias against a character, (Hal), when doing interviews about your upcoming book it turns certain fans away before you begin.
    7. I’ll make this my last point even though I could list 100 easy. You will never be able to appeal to every fan and I think he knew this going in, with that said you should never attempt to undercut central ideas of an intellectual property just to try and show how “creative” you are. You don’t need to fundamentally change core aspects of the lantern mythos to make a good comic book. Give the hero or team a good villain with an interesting motivation and work your story around how these characters overcome and adapt to their situation. Not every story needs to be the downfall of the corps or change the status quo.
If you made it this far thank you for hearing me out. I’m a huge lantern fan. One of the biggest and I hate this crap.

I met Sam at a con and he was an ass. I had him sign a few book and he looked like it genuinely pained him. He said a total of 5 words and scowled the whole time. 1 of 2 occasions where I lost all respect for a comic book creator by meeting them.

While you are free to rant and I agree with 99% of your points though the last one could be a little different too. Letting writers get creative can be a double edged sword but you don’t know until they flex that muscle.
Something interesting can happen or otherwise we wouldn’t have got what we’ve got to build upon in the first place you know. Something to think about. His ideas wasn’t bad but it was the implementation and DC’s meddlesome antics that caused more of the crash

This run was doomed the minute he expressed his disdain of Hal Jordan. Hal is the most popular Lantern, you’re not gonna win any fans dogging him out in interviews. It’s okay to dislike a character, but there’s a way to express that without turning readers off. Just tell readers you’re going in another direction and Hal won’t be the focus of this run. Instead, Thorne came off as arrogant and unlikable. He would have been better off not saying anything about Hal at all.

Hal simply IS GL. I love John and Guy, but they’re secondary characters most of the time. I’m all for them having their own arcs, but really Hal should take center stage most of the time. Kyle I’m okay with but not a huge fan of him; the only reason he exists was as part of a decision that never should have been made: the decision to turn Hal evil.
The ones that came after Kyle all seem like they were invented just for racial and sexual bean counting - quotas for fictional characters.

    • @zemox2534

Kyle is a more interesting character than Hal. Sorry but Hal should have stayed the spectre or gone onto the after life. It is like WWE constantly pushing older stars like Goldberg Iver young talents like Finn Balor. It is moving backwards. True turning Hal evil in the first place was dumb but saying the other earth lanterns are secondary is bloody insulting to them. Was Hal the GL of JL TAS? No. Was Hal a member of JLI and the Morrision JLA run? No. Those 3 have more than proven they are just as good as Hal if not better.

I also didn't feel that Thorne ever really understood the John Stewart character like he claimed he did. Even though Thorne was trying to do something new (apparently), I found his Green Lantern boring and hard to finish. One problem was that I found I didn't really care about the characters.
I thought Teen Lantern was annoying, and just a stupid concept in general. Jo Mullen seemed pretty generic with nothing special about her, or any reason to care about her. Also, she had a horrible design.
You know what modern Green Lantern was unique until now? Jessica Cruz. The concept of a Green Lantern with an anxiety disorder is brilliant! It highlights that willpower has nothing to do with feeling fear, but rather overcoming fear with willpower. Such a cool concept! And then Geoffrey Thorne makes her a Yellow Lantern.... aargh!

Green Lantern is my favorite franchise (in fact the character saved my life) and I've spent the past dozen years writing and podcasting about it. That said, this is the worst Green Lantern run in the history of the characters. This series was in trouble as soon as Geoff Thorne's opinions about the characters and his John Stewart fanboyism were put on display. DC certainly bears considerable blame for this book, the lion's share of criticism lies directly at Thorne's feet. Marco Santucci's art was a bright spot, but the pacing, recycled tropes and the rest of the art sunk it.
For all of Thorne's disdain for the "chosen one" trope and making some Green Lanterns more special than other, he's done exactly that himself. He'll sidestep the criticism by pointing out that John Stewart is no longer a Green Lantern, but you'd have a hard time convincing readers, and DC itself, that he isn't. In fact just this week they referred to him as Green Lantern in "Death of the Justice League". By putting emphasis on characters like Teen Lantern, Simon Baz and Jo Mullein and sidelining loved characters like Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner Thorne alienated fans who have been disenfranchised by DC's flooding of the franchise with diversity bingo characters at the expense of the ones readers actually want to read about.
We can only hope that DC pulls their head out of their ass and at the other side of Dark Crisis lies a Hal Jordan centric Green Lantern book, a Green Lantern Corps series anchored by Kyle and Guy, and an anthology series akin to "Green Lantern Corps Quarterly" that highlights the rich cast of characters that make the Green Lantern Corps what it is.

    • @AtomizedSound
      @AtomizedSound 2 ปีที่แล้ว

DC is mostly to blame my friend overall. The editorial decisions there fell flat and a horrible creative oversight. I doubt we will ever go back to the many titles we had a decade ago or so. Those days are probably over for now but we will see. I think a different book with all the Earth Lanterns is smart and then bring the colored corps back and let that be woven into the thread again too.

The only thing I dislike about Teen Lantern of how she was introduced as "The Genius kid that hacked the Green Lantern power battery"(cause child prodigies like Riri Willaims, Nadia van Dyne and Red Locust were such well like characters) it was a lie by Bendis and see her origins in Bolivia. But after all of that Bendis didn't do anything with that after, Teen Lantern to me is just a bland character in Bendis' Young Justice(that Bendis' writing for ya).
I feel the only time that Teen Lantern was flesh out as a character was in Future State and I founded out today it was written by Joise Campbell which is embarrassing for Geoff Thorne(I'm still concern about Campbell's Shazam comic but I'll give it a chance I don't care about her superman show) Maybe Thorne should've expand the history about the dead Green Lantern that gave Keli the Gauntlet, why does he have it? what does does want Keil to do with the gantlet? How the Guardians didn't know about the dead green lantern or what sector he's from and why he was killed by a normal bullet.(Jesus Bendis, a Green lantern killed by a normal gun? Bennnndis!) or give Keli character development.

It took DC literally decades to clean up the damage the first time a writer wrote that story, and that time it was a certified legend in Steve Englehart. If it caused DC grief when Englehart did it, the results will be even worse with a lesser writer like Thorne.

Checked out the first issue of Future State: GL and felt the same way. Depowering a hero is usually a dead end. At the very least a writer has to earn the right to tell that story by showing using it to show something about the character we didn't know or making them grow. By definition, we already knew the lanterns had the willpower to face down evil without their power rings. Otherwise they never would have gotten them.

I have been a GL fan since early 1990s, in fact, mostly a DC fan overall. GL is my favorite; actually, I didn't like Kyle, but Ron Marz wrote such a great story and the art was solid (Banks and Pelletier of note): I was consumed with that book till the end, still obsessed.
So, I wanted to give Thorne a chance, despite the banter, as he took over the title; I wanted to like it. I wanted a great GL story, I didn't get it.
The good: Thorne took the story back to OA and we got to see the Central Battery and the Guardians, in more traditional garb even! Loved that part. He gave us many space adventures, which GL fans typically like. Also, seeing John Stewart take a prominent role was a nice touch, he is a great character with many ideas to explore, as Mosaic was fascinatingly dynamic. We saw Sinestro, always a plus. Issues #1 and #2 got my attention. The death of a Guardian and the rituals were interesting and seemed to overall to fit.
The bad: The art was just a distraction from the tale, it was terrible: cartoonish with big heads. John 'ascending' was too similar for me to Kyle and the Ion storyline. Teen Lantern was uninteresting, over the top and didn't add anything. Hal was sidelined, a bad call. Hal playing second fiddle to Jo felt awkward and wrong. The story seemed disjointed and not so fluid. Also, no real action for: Kyle, Guy, or Alan.
The ugly: Jo Mullein lecturing the seasoned GL Corps in issue #8 was just too much, for me. (Her exchange with, Iolande, the princess of Betrassus, Lantern of sector 1417. ) Example: "Dial all this back down to one and start acting like Green Lanterns." And count how many times she said the word "I" in just a few pages: 1) "Like I don't have enough on my plate." 2) "This is who I am" 3) I'm the entire Green Lantern Corps..." 4) "I didn't ask for it." 5) "I damned sure didn't want it." 6) "But I'm the one doing it because..." 7) "I was the only one..." 8)"I got the United Planets..." 9) "I had them bring you..." 10) "I'm the one keeping every enemy..." 11&12) "What I'm doing, I'm doing for you."
Although, I do realize Iolande questioned who Jo is, her response was too preachy, too much. Too self important.
The reason this rant and situation was so bothersome to me is the GL stories have always made a point to show that lanterns are such, with or without a ring. It is their fight, their resilience and their will that pulls them through, the ring is only a tool. Simply having the ring doesn't give her cause to treat them so poorly. Here, she didn't rally the troops, she talked down to them. It felt politically motivated and forced. The whole episode seemed like a gimmick to get a spotlight on Jo, which she already had in her book, Far Sector.
This is Green Lantern, this was a prime chance to tell a great story with many iconic elements spanning the cosmos yet the twelve issue run just fell short. I was not really impressed, and I sorely wanted to be.

I think it's possible to make Jojo or Teen Lantern work as characters, but it would take some special effort. So the problem isn't focusing on them so much as it is focusing on them *without* making them more interesting/likeable. Too much of comics prioritizes big plot points over character development, when in reality those big plot points only feel meaningful if a writer has made the involved characters compelling and interesting.

8:51 Hal Jordan was the one who bring the god damn Justice League to the final battle, on the climax of the arc. Lead the offensive and at the end, figure it out how the reestructuration of the corps works, creating again the rings and so. For a writer that hates a character, makes no sense right? Or maybe the focus on the "hates the character" is what makes no sense 🤔

It really annoyed me that no one bothered to rebuild the battery while SOME Lanterns went to investigate the explosion.
Also, I absolutely confused as to why Perch kept sticking up for Geoff. Geoff's run will probably go down in GL history as one of the worst run, but Perch swears up and down that Thorne had a plan and that the story was going somewhere.

I proudly have a complete silver age run of GL and so much of DC’s modern mythology is built off of things that happened in Hal’s original run.
How is Hal not cool enough? The guy is somewhere between Maverick and Indiana Jones with a power ring. He is a character built for adventure whether you play him flawed or not.

Green Lantern has long been my favorite character, used my allowance for an old school by mail subscription in the late 1970s that I still have, all well worn from being read over and over. I was dabbling about getting back into comics, and largely returned to having a pull list solely because of Geoff Johns masterful revival of Hal Jordan. Have every crossover issue of Blackest Night and Brightest Day, and basically every Green Lantern-related title since.
Kilowog is probably my second favorite, but John Stewart has been fleshed out into a worthy and great Green Lantern in his own right.
However, here he doesn't trust John Stewart as Green Lantern, he takes that away and tries to make him something else entirely. I don't actually completely hate this run, but it never all quite works either. And yes, the wildly inconsistent artwork is often very bad.
I do respectfully disagree about Far Sector, I very much enjoyed that series as something different only tangentially related to being a Green Lantern story. However, I agree that Jo's character was built fully outside the normal Green Lantern mythology and did not make sense to bring into the fold as a standard member of the GL corps. The character absolutely feels out of place in this story.
Teen Lantern is just an annoying character that gets dropped after all the build up, while being an excuse to turn a decent character in Simon into a glorified, neutered
    babysitter.
I actually have no problem with it being time for a John Stewart-centric run, but here he's never really actually a Green Lantern and then by the end is this weird "Emerald Knight", like they didn't trust John's character to take the mantle of Green Lantern forward.
So ultimately I personally find this run disrespectful to the John Stewart character and that was very disappointing.

This verbiage leaves me waiting for the critical thinking to commence. This is a rant because you don’t see what you want, not a true breakdown of what you want to see and what you know is a great story and truly articulate that. What we get is it sucks, Geoff hates HAL Jordan so he’s doesn’t know what he’s doing, Tom Raney art sucks…. When people would show me reviews on stuff like this, I always question what’s really going on here. This isn’t Critical Thinking. This is a rattle banging complaint. “I WANT MY MTV!” Come on. Let’s do better here. Did you explain the story to the layman that may have missed it? What sucked about the story? Why can’t these other Lanterns be a part of a new sifting of the series rebooting the GL universe? What was so haphazard about it? So many questions. So many answers that will never be answered. Hal Jordan is the greatest Green Lantern of all time. He is way better than Alan Scott ever was, and no other Green Lantern that has ever come after him can duplicate his greatness. All that they can do is just imitate him. Anyone who doesn't like Hal Jordan is not a real Green Lantern fan. Anyone who says that they have never liked Hal Jordan was never a Green Lantern fan in the first place to begin with. The only reason that DC Comics writers write Hal Jordan like a shitty character now is because he is a straight white male. Soy woke S.J.W.s hate his character like they hate Guy Gardner, so they push characters like John Stewart to try to force Political Correctness.
It doesn't matter if they get so salty that don't want to show a white character beating a black character. They can cry racism all that they want to. Hal Jordan has been the main Green Lantern ever since the late 1950s, and nothing is going to stop him from being the focus of the Green Lantern Corps. Call him "boring" all that you want to. Superman is still the gold standard who sets the benchmark. Batman perfected the standard. Wonder Woman refined that perfection. The Silver Age Green Lantern is a product of that. Get over it.

Here some of my thoughts on what I have seen.
    1) I do believe he was trying to fix Teen lantern, but he did not succeed.
    2) I can understand the issue with having to many human lanterns, granted this problem really exploded after simon baz and Jessica cruz.
I believe Thorne side stepped the issue by having them removed from play rather than killed. That is something I can appreciate.
    3) It is easy to see from this why having all these Dc events , or a event, can mess up a story. Especially under these circumstances.
    4) there were good ideas but over all it was bad.
This in no way excuses the story quality, but I will give credit where it is due. Thank you for the video.

I have no problem with Hal Jordan not being in something. Write whoever you want to write, but just do it well. That's the nuts & bolts of this, it was a poorly written story overall.
And this is just my feeling, I don't think there was ever any intention on DC's end for this run to go past 12 issues. So I don't think this "abruptly" ended. 12 issues was the plan all along, they just didn't tell the consumer.
I liked the first couple of issues, although it leaned heavily on Star Wars. That's been a thing ever since the movie, I guess (even though the GLC came before Star Wars & more than likely influenced that, along with Jack Kirby's 4th World, but I digress). Then it started to devolve into Future State, which I absolutely HATED, so nothing good could have come from that.
The destruction of the battery, yeah, we've seen this all before. But you could say the same for all the "wars" in the Batman title. How many Joker Wars, Bane taking over Gotham, yadda yadda yadda have we seen time & time again in the past 5-10 years? The writers are basically just regurgitating what's come before, Thorne is no different. He just did it more poorly.
The inclusion of Jo Mullein, Teen Lantern & Simon Baz were missteps. I really like Baz on his own. And I'm sure Mullein & Teen Lantern on their own, could be good as well. But to shoehorn them all in just spelled disaster. Then adding Jessica Cruz to the mix? Ugh vey. Too many ingredients to this failed recipe.
Whether it was DC's decision or not to include Mullein, it was Thorne's decision in what capacity she was used. I would venture to say if he would've used Fatality as John's partner in all of this, and just made Mullein a minor character within the story, things would've been better overall. Maybe. This was pretty bad, so I'm not sure what really could have fixed this. At least we'll get some cool action figures of John from this.

7:49 ok, this "he hates Hal Jordan" thing I think you're emphasizing too much, and you even say you don't quite know why. Thorne in an interview said that his "hate" for Jordan is because for him, his story arc that transformed him into Parallax was the pinnacle of the character, therefore, making him a hero again seems cheap, since he believes that Jordan did things from which to redeem himself is almost impossible. However, I would like to point out that before Thorne, there were 2 seasons of Morrison writing Hal Jordan and before that there was Venditti? Books in which Hal Jordan was the main character, regardless of the leading role of the other human Lanterns, including Stewart at the head of the Corp. The point is that Jordan DOESN'T HAVE TO BE IN FRONT AND IN THE LEAD of each and every one of the story arcs Green Lantern, especially if he was for the previous 5 years. In other words, this point is quite detachable, especially since emphasizing the "hatred" towards the character is quite cheap too lol

It’s funny how people who hate Hal always try to use that against him, saying he was only as good as a villain when it simply isn’t true. I doubt this racist has read a single Hal book. He’s just saying the usual crap. Second Hal is extremely crucial to green Lantern. All the villains are his, including the most iconic one, and honestly Most people grew up with him. For example I’m 19 years old and along with flash he was my gateway into comics. Third Venditi’s run was just Hal. It had Kyle, Guy, and John too where they all pretty much had tune to shine. Fourth of all John Stewart specifically is not important whatsoever, he doesn’t even have any good stories. He just acts as the token GL. That’s it.

I just finished this run and I'm kinda tired of watching the Green Lanterns getting destroyed and powered back up again on repeat. Happy that John got the focus but why are the Earthborn Lanterns the only ones of late who get a special boost? The most anyone else really get is a pallet swap of color.

In the end, the book is not as disastrous as they want to make it seem. Raney's art is not at all ideal for a Green Lantern book, its inconsistencies in terms of expressions and proportions of the characters undermine the spectacular nature of the book. Towards the end of the story arc, ChrisCross's art revived the comic and showed that overall it would have been a hell of a lot better. However, again, the comic is very enjoyable. We have an introspective story focused on John Stewart that touches on elements of his past and puts them to use to elevate the character to a new status of cosmic power. Jo Mullier's story tries to go a different way and serve to bring an overall climatic closure to the story. Personally I think what Morrison did was much more complicated and far less enjoyable. Now it will be up to DC to maintain this magnificent status of the character and we will see where Stewart's next story arc written by Thorne goes.

This feels like such an unnecessary reset that destroys everything cool about the GLC. And eventually, DC will un-do all of this, as they have done before. The setup and arrangement of everything related to the GLC was so easy to follow. What's been done here is very confusing and convoluted. I look forward to the next reset. This will be discarded and forgotten.

Why in the hell did DC want to get rid of the Central Power Battery... again? ! Pisses me off!

I didn't think the issue was as bad as you make it seem. Yea it sucks Hal is not in it much but it was a good story. I like that the GL and Gaurdians aren't the sole protectors of the universe anymore. The Gaurdians kind of just appointed themselves to that position. It's a new spin on the lore and I liked it.

At least you had a little Hal Jordan in there ...my favorite is Kyle Rayner and it looks like he died without any fanfare at the beginning 😅

He is not dead, DC told Thorne that he cannot kill any of the main earth Lanterns. He is in a coma lost in space. Personally I am glad that he is away from this train wreck.

Your take on it is one viewpoint, sure. Here’s mine…I do ultimately think that DC is the main culprit on what screwed this run up with editorial issues and what Thorne could and couldn’t do in regards to what characters he had to include and what changes could be made and etc. Yes a lot of his ideas was his own but given what he had to work with and to craft his backstory into a now main lead writer story is a huge endeavor but it could’ve gone better. Jo I feel wasn’t needed and shouldn’t have been included in this run. She could’ve been left in her own book for the time being which was a decent story in its own right I feel as detached from the main GL mythos..Teen Lantern also could’ve been fleshed out more but overall seems like that was a farce and useless in the end, she definitely needs it to be a character at all. Rehashing events and plots of the central power battery being destroyed is cliché nowadays and also another rogue guardian wiping out the rest of the guardians is another used plot device as well as mostly a new all powerful GL status quo as in John Stewart all be it in a different way. I’m used to comics every so often treading the same used plot points years down the road again but with different characters and methods but the results are mostly the same. Yeah it’s bothersome and yeah you think the well has run dry at this point for creativity. Changing the mythos yet again and maybe “rebooting” GL with a new status quo if that’s what you want to call it is a bold move and a more sudden one at that given the time frame of Thorne’s run. GL at least with John’s run and after has had reboots so to speak but they have been mostly mild and not reality shifting such as Thorne’s ending. I’m curious as where it will go. I know one day it will go back to how it was because that’s the cyclical nature of comics if you are around long enough to see how they operate with plots and storytelling devices. The art does leave a lot to be desired for a GL comic though. I don’t mind some GL other than Hal stepping up to be the spotlight for awhile. Hal has had plenty of spotlights on him and his stories. We all know Hal and his personality and his strengths and weaknesses by now. The other characters need more development though and a chance to take that stage as Hal has done. They need to be done right though and for the writers to know these other GL’s so they can write them properly however. Personally it’s hard to do that with one GL title going. I miss when GL had multiple titles with a focus on different GL’s of Earth or even different colored Corps which I miss too. You then have a chance to flesh out more steadily the other GL’s instead of choosing who in one main GL title to write about and barely doing anything with the others. DC should know that but it seems they don’t care really or think the fans won’t really care. Having a lot of Earth GL’s is bothersome too. They keep increasing and I’m all for having varied backgrounds of Earth Lanterns as you should expect there to be varied ones with rings going to different worthy individuals all over the world rather than just ole ‘Murica. That’s a whole other issue though for DC to work on in the future. In brightest day…

Teen Lantern was another useless character, and Future State was terrible. Great video. It's been frustrating to be a Green Lantern fan lately. I wish they'd bring back Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver.

I didn't like it at all. How can you have a series without Hall Jordan being a part of it. Also, teen lantern and Jo Jo Mullen seemed like they were forced into the story. The art wasn't that great either.
