    According to Grant Morrison’s substack, Didio was seeking to make the largest change in the publishing line in 50 years. He overachieved; he went over 60 years back to a period that superhero comics were essentially dead except for Superman and Batman.

    This isn’t the Green Lantern clone saga. It’s their version of Superman blue/Superman red from the 90’s. Eventually, the 2 Johns will merge back together. They have to, there’s no way that this won’t cause continuity confusion when John appears in other books. Like, isn’t he supposed to take part in Lazarus Planet?

    What I've noticed in writing lately is a thing of :"Let's write the current big thing." Ie, time travel and multiverse, and they're relying on these things being popular to sell books and... it's not working because the market is oversaturated with these tropes or whatever you want to call them.
    Add in that they don't pay attention to what makes these and the characters work, and you get stuff like this.

    I must admit, I like Mosaic, as it had an experimental tone that didn’t affect anything else and was more self contained. John’s involvement was a bit strange, though, but it was nice to see all of the different aliens living under the same roof, some good, some bad, etc

    If Thorne actually wrote a Stewart story I would have bought all the issues, but half the comic was about Jo, the most annoying GL in the corp. I absolutely hate the character, those big oversized energy glasses look ridiculous, what’s the point of those? They don’t hide her identity, they’re simply a fashion statement.

    I do like John Stewart, not because he "looks like me", but he is a cool character. When they added the Marine turned architect elements, it made sense why he was in the room and calling shots, with the other heavy hitters, like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. But therein lies the problem. He typically works when in that pantheon of gods. One would hope that, if there comes a solo book, he'll be given the depth befitting a big gun member, of the JLA. Too much focus is put on "he's the black guy". When I was in the Navy, up to now, I'm not just the black guy (quite a few of my coworkers are white). If they want people to care about a character, they should look to what works. Characters should have layers, nuance, personality and purpose. Making a character the best, because they are *insert diversity point*, or even just because, will never work. See Roman Reigns' face push.
    But yeah, John Stewart can be really good. I love how intricate his constructs are, I how he can lead, being a good soldier, before getting the ring. There are things there, that a good writer can explore. Too bad there aren't any good writers, at DC.

    • @scribblerjones
      @scribblerjones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you. I first got a full intro to Stewart during EVS' "Rebirth" arc. I remember how Stewart was described... he had a level of precision and structural understanding so solid, that all of his constructs had bolts and rivets and struts as if they had been built from the ground up from scratch. The precision and discipline of a soldier with the fundamental understanding of structure that an architect has. I've loved John since.
      If anything, I'm not on the bandwagon just because I'm a Black person and Stewart is Black. I actually worry that his ethnicity will make DC turn him into another Miles Morales. John is great because of who he is, not what he looks like.

    • @andresanguianozuniga6798
      @andresanguianozuniga6798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True... In fact thats why i always liked the idea of a GL movie were Hal and John are the two main characters, Hal has too much will and Jon its a pretty focused man... Both with Kyle are the best depictions of what a Lantern is.
      I admit that i like more Hal for his involment in the lore, with that he becomes THE Green Lantern... But John Honestly its a better person to weald the Ring on who the thinks.

    • @scribblerjones
      @scribblerjones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andresanguianozuniga6798 I agree with you. Hal and John would do great in a movie where they have to work together - Hal, the willful maverick; John, the deliberate and disciplined officer. Done right, I think that present excellent chemistry and make for a great story.

      @scribblerjones 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andresanguianozuniga6798 I don't get why there is such a push to just now make Stewart the main Lantern and sideline Hal... oh, wait. I think I understand why, now that you mention it. It's just like what Marvel are trying to do with Miles Morales - and what they failed to do with ReeRee Williams: replace the "problematic" White male lead with a politically acceptable "person of color."
      Even as a John Stewart fan, I know that Hal came before him - and while I love John, I'm a Jordan fan as well. Hal Jordan is THE Green Lantern. Full stop. Skin color and respectability politics be damned. I'm all for showcasing another character properly, but I draw a line at replacing a character just because there are identity boxes to be checked.

    Here's my problem with John Stewart: He is boring af. He is the most boring Green Lantern of all. He only has a couple of times where he shines, in the Geoff Johns run and the Robert Venditti run, but just for a couple of issues, because he doesn't have that backstory one can relate to him. Anyone can relate to Hal, Kyle, Jessica, Guy, even Simon. People only like John Stewart because of the early 2000's Justice League cartoons, that's all. But John Stewart has to be the most boring and predictable Green Lantern of all. Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner are the best Green Lanterns in the Corps, but for some reason, DC does not care for Kyle anymore.

    I think an anthology book could work for Green Lantern, ideally it would focus on the alien lanterns(since they don't really get the spotlight), the stories would be one issue or two maximum. What a horrible issue. Honestly, taking 2 years for John to defeat a villain he beat on his first day of ascension is just insulting to John as a character. He’s not that dumb. Thinking back on the whole series (I will not call this garbage a run), Thorne has a poor grasp of John’s personality and style. He’s a leader and an ex-marine. He doesn’t run into situations or carry cumbersome swords around. He wouldn’t return to the dark sectors without a cavalry, especially after rebuilding the corps. He wasted 2 years of everyone’s lives in the dark sector and everyone who died during that time is John’s fault. It’s already abundantly clear Thorne hates the green lanterns as a concept but I genuinely think he hates John most of all. what’s worse: Writing a character you hate with some respect or writing a character you love so horribly that people might hate them because of you?

    John Stewart can be done right. He's significantly more interesting than Kyle Rayner who was wishy-washy and never necessary. In the mid 80s Hal Jordan quits and John Stewart takes over for the next couple of years. This was before Mosaic which was terrible. I agree that John Stewart lacks the charm of Hal Jordan. He's a writers idea of what a former Marine would be while Hal Jordan is the pilots from Top Gun. That doesn't mean though that John Stewart can't be written well as the primary Green Lantern of Earth. Go back to the pre Mosaic books and you'll see they are solid. I'm hoping for good things from PKJ with this character. He's interesting and it would be nice to read a good John Stewart solo book for the first time since the mid 80s.

    Thorne is a good writer (just checkout the one episode of the 2011 THUNDERCATS series he wrote and the final and only good season of the AVENGERS ASSEMBLE animated series to see some of his best work). I haven't fully completely read a single issue of any of his GL run (I just couldn't get into it sense I'm not a huge GL fan), but the little of a random issue that I have read and flipped through (and based on many pass GL comics I have read and various GL animated projects that I have seen), the main problem with GL as a whole is that the character is not unique within the DCU due to him being around numerous other GL Corps members. GL is also way too powerful when it comes to the various things that his ring can do. When you have GL able to make water or working machines made out of light, you have jumped the shark in being over powered. Dial back GL's powers and dial back him always hanging out with the corps and DC might be able to sell a GL book. They also need to make Hal the only GL of Earth and make all of those other human GL Corps members a new version of the Darkstars who will now be Hal's deputies on Earth. Hell, they should just create a new GL book called "GREEN LANTERN AND THE DARKSTARS" and go from there.

    I dipped out of comics back around 2011. Whenever it was that they renumbered Detective and Action comics. That wasn’t the reason I ran for zee hills, but it was sort of a symptom. It seemed blasphemous and short sighted. Like when Alonso was putting out all those weird point one issues. It just said to me that they didn’t care about keeping the numbering and volume information from becoming overly convoluted, because they literally didn’t imagine anyone would ever be going back and reading the shit they were publishing. History stopped mattering; it was all about keeping their heads above water for the next month or two and if a new number 1 would boost sales, then that was all that mattered.
    I don’t know. I watch your videos because I still love comics. I miss coming home from class back in the 2000s and jumping on the newsarama forums and guessing the next X-men roster or whatever. It’s so depressing. I still have my dozens and dozens of omnibuses (I’m not sure if that’s the plural of omnibus but whatever). I’ve got my marvel unlimited and dcu infinite subs. But I keep hoping to hear from you that things have turned a corner. That Jim Lee had his key card revoked. Anything. I guess I’ll have to keep waiting.

      I dipped out in late 2007 due to personal financial issues. By 2011 I was again in a position to jump back in but the entire idea of N52 turned me off. I was very attached to the old Post-Crisis DCU. Shoot, I still am. DiDio's motivation for the N52 reboot was really nothing more than a big cash grab. I guess he figured with the talent he had on staff (and they were loaded), that everything would eventually just fall into place. Nope! A reboot of that magnitude takes a lot of time and planning to execute properly. It can't and shouldn't ever be done a whim. N52 is one of many bone head decisions that man made during his time in charge.

    No no no no no no. It bad enough that Saladin Ahmed plagiarized the Clone Saga, I forbid another clone saga from happening in DC comics. There already clones in DC universe. Bizarro, doomsday, Conner Kent, Damian’s clone that I forgot his name. I believe Guy Garner have a clone too.
    Why can’t Geoffrey Thorne’s series can’t be a different continuity? Heck Teen Lantern by Joise Campbell is from the Future State continuity. And I said again It embarrassing for Geoffrey Thorne that Joise Campbell managed to fleshed out teen lantern better than him and that only one story in future state.
    Oh Yeah Teen Lantern is still in a Coma. This comic didn’t reveal Teen Lantern’s whereabouts didn’t it?
    Something like this happen with Mister Miracle Source of Freedom. That there’s Two Thaddeus Brown in DC. oneThaddeus who’s white guy from Batman’s Detective comics and The new JSA Golden age and the other Thaddeus is a black guy in Source of freedom. I can’t tell which is canon to mainstream continuity. Even the DC wiki doesn’t even know.
    I kinda agreed with you Wes, even that terrible Beware my Power movie adapted All of Kyle Rayner Stories but the movie made it about John Stewart. I believe DC is avoid Kyle because the fridge myth.
    Wes, there is John Stewart anniversary omnibus. It might have John Stewart stories that focus on him Not him on a the team. If you have it.
    I just want to read Philip Kennedy Johnson’s Green lantern soon

    The character does not have to be interesting today. He just has to be black. Then you check your inclusivity and diversity box.

      The only way that people can be progressive these days in comics is if the characters meet this specific criteria:
      1. Female diversity ✓
      2. Black Indigenous People Of Color inclusivity ✓
      3. L.G.B.T.Q. + representation ✓

    I dunnoe why they keep trying to push john stewart down our throats esp at the expense of hal like they did w the recent gl animated movie. Like ffs get a decent writer behind him and actually do some character snd world building w him instead of just pushing him as the token black guy of the jla/corps

    The original Mosaic was a world made up of pieces of hundreds of other worlds..a 'Mosaic' patchwork of worlds, Basically the Battle World from the original Secret Wars but in DC made by one of the Guardians. John was like the planetary Marshal/sheriff/protector. I thought it was a well done book back in the day, believe I have the whole run. Great no, but a well written book. Was by Gerard Jones if I remember right. At the end I think all or nearly all peoples on it were killed when Jordan went crazy. John became a Guardian for a time...something like that.
    Haven't read a GL book in decades, Not read a DC book in YEARS. I just kinda half ass keep up with most comics on the internet now, will see what's been happening and all of that. I don't live close enough to a comic shop to make it worth my while to go to one (130+ mile round trip...YES that's the closest)

    Dok, respectfully, I’m gonna have to stop you there. John Stewart Green Lantern is a great Lantern character - when written/portrayed well.
    Your issue with John Stewart, just like us diehard Lantern fans is that the Lantern corps hasn’t been written properly in several years. John has a serious demeanor, but when he cracks jokes they should actually be funny. He just hasn’t been utilized well in the comic-space.
    DC needs a great writer that understands the Lantern lore and can execute it well without pushing an agenda
