That question is just wrong . I was in last place then I passed one person, now he or she is in last place. The questions frame of reference is that I’ve already passed him. I just passed the person in last place. The students are all correct. I am now in second from last place.

Lapping someone doesn't lead to change of position, it only means the lapped person is still at the same position but now one lap behind the others.

The correct answer is **literally any place expect last place**, because it’s possible for everyone else in the race to overlap them.

It actually DOES make sense if you take a second to think about it; and 99% of people did give the correct answer. "Second to last place" is correct. If you just passed someone; that someone is NOW IN LAST PLACE. (Basically, "You just passed the person [THAT IS NOW] in last place." Adding or retracting those three words can very much make it the same question in people's minds.)

Apart from the fact that most people got the 'hole' question wrong, I was amazed by the fact that none of them had any idea of how you measure volume, coming out with answers like 24 feet (instead of 24 cubic feet,) and one even giving the answer in pounds.

Yep, I realized that too. They asked the question wrongly. The trick question was always something like "you passed 2nd place person in a race, which place are you in?" and most people say "first" but the answer is "second" of course, now you are second after you passed them.
Edit: Okay, now I see they asked that question too. The first one is just wrong or the answer is wrong.

If you assume there is an answer, you assume the tense changed mid-phrase. Its not like there is a rule against it in verbal speech.
It's also a flawed question because you can lap the person in last place as long as you are not in last place in many types of racing. As long as the race involves multiple laps, this is a possibility.

You could also be second to last place if everyone in the race lapped the person in last place.
If you passed the person in last place, you could be in 1st... or 2nd, or 3rd, etc. With the information the question gives you can't give an answer.
The answer is anything from first to second to last if lapping is possible. The Way to destroy dumb questions like this, is to ask for specifics

The way he wrote the question on screen is grammatically incorrect anyways making it invalid. In conversation, it gets translated into 3 distinct sentences because we do not speak semicolons.
You just said "a person" instead of how the question had it as "the person". Yes its anal, but being anal is how you get correct answers. If you are in last and you pass the person in front of you, who is in what place at the moment you are passing them? Both of you. Imagine this: you both are tied for last and you pull ahead of them to pass them. You are now second to last.
The way he asked it, the correct answer is second to last. If the statement was "you just passed the person *that is now* in last place." there wouldn't be any confusion. To give an answer to a question, you first assume that there is an answer to the question. Further, the guy doing the quiz asked about your place which implies that there is an answer. You assume a time difference between the passing of the person and the description of the person because you assume the question has an answer. Saying you can't pass the person in last does not answer the question about your place. Its a complete red herring. It isn't answering the question that was asked. Going around asking invalid questions with no answer and expecting them to answer doesn't prove anything.

Also you can lap people in a race and pass them even if they were last.
In conclusion the valid answers are: second to last or any number depending on how many participants are in the race.
