I've lived in Argentina and in Europe, and often I read that Argentina is a bit of Europe in South America, but immediately I think it's great that it's only 'a bit of Europe,' because it's that blend that makes Argentina special. In Argentina, there's still empathy, you still see children and lots of young people, pets are important but... less important than children, people still ask you 'How are you?'. That's the beauty of Argentina. If you're just after architecture, go to Europe. This is something else, a mix that's hard to find elsewhere.

I've been infatuated with Mexico City ever since my first trip there in 1996. Been there dozens of times, sometimes spending a month or two at a time. I've only been to Buenos Aires three times but thanks to Travis, I'm planning to go for a month next January. I'm thinking I may feel the same as you afterwards, ReluctantLawyer.

I love Buenos Aires. I visited there back in 2005. I stayed at the Panamericano Hotel and got to see Maradona. He was at the same hotel doing a press conference. It was pretty cool! He is a big soccer celebrity there. The city is beautiful! . The Argentine men are gorgeous! No joke! I was turning my head all the time when walking in the streets of Buenos Aires. LOL... Anyway I visited too many places but one thing that I never forget is the cemetery where Eva Peron was buried. A lot of history there. Also Casa Rosada tour. Have you try the famous Alfajores Havanna? If not, you must! "It's a pastry made with cookies and creamy dulce de leche caramel. Can't wait to see your next video in Argentina!

Buenos Aires has improved even more compared to 2005, a remodeling plan was undertaken for the entire downtown and historic center, with leveling of sidewalks to semi-pedestrianize them in the European style, and the historic center: San Telmo has had a similar treatment, highlighting the entire environment and with strong commercial investments, to transform it into the new "Palermo Soho"

You now Travis we porteños use a word to describe our relationship with BA, "nostalgia". Though every porteño will describe it differently, to me, nostalgia is a mix of sweet old memories that are gone with your confidence about good things to come, despite the difficulties of life. I think BA, maybe like no other city in the world, makes that feeling possible. I think you do not need to be born in BA to be a legit porteño, but you need to understand nostalgia. If any day of your life, you find your self leaving BA, and while you are on the cab to the airport, you start to feel a tiny sensation in your belly growing up to the heart, and that feeling tells you that maybe you don't want to leave, maybe you stayed enough in BA to feel nostalgia.

The Rural has wonderful events- The largest book fair in the world (April), and the equivalent of a country state fair (the end of July, first of August). My favorite scene is to sit on 9 de julio and watch the lights come on at night, or early in the morning and watch the sun come up. Seeing the sun come up on the Rio de la Plata on the Vicente Lopez beach area is another spectacular view. Finally, other interesting things to do are to take tours of old buildings, take in all the beautiful sculptors and have a coffee every afternoon in a different neighborhood. That is something special from Buenos Aires because each one is very different. From San Telmo or Monserrat (downtown) to Palermo, Recoleta and Belgrano, to the more family oriented like Caballito, Colegiales, Villa Crespo or Chacarita. And the ones that foreigners dont know but are beautiful like Villa Devoto, Núñez, Couhglan or Ingeniería. Your final thoughts relate to a mixture of things and feelings you get when you're in Argentina (not just Buenos Aires but any province in Argentina). There's both a sense of hapiness or just living life outside on the streets, sharing your time with others, talking face to face with friends and family but also a bit of melancholy as well. There's 'something in the air' that is truly hard to describe. I'm from Cordoba city (province of Cordoba) and my experience is similar to yours. I always enjoy my short 2 / 3 day trips to Buenos Aires just because there's an endless list of places to visit and things to do but I like my city better as it's a little less chaotic and crazy to me. Glad you enjoyed Argentina so much ! Saludos !

👏🏽 I may have to add this to my list for the end of 2024 to early 2025. I'm still doing Europe but adding more. Curtains parts of this video reminded me of when I lived in Mexico City, yet some areas looked much newer and more progressive. As for those double decker busses that is what my everyday travel bus is like here in Scotland. It's lovely to ride along the coast on the bus or on the trains and watch nature. Train travel around other parts of Europe is so lovely and dog friendly. Safe travels Travis. 🙏🏼

Right, so if you're staying I might recommend a couple of tours.
Go to Retiro train station and take the Mitre line, make a stop in Vicente Lopez and take a walk around, then stop in Olivos, same thing. Finally go to the end of the line to Tigre and take a boat tour and walk around. Maybe one day is not enough for all that, but you should check it.
And since you're here you can't leave without visiting the cities of Mar del Plata, Pinamar, Cordoba, Salta and Mendoza. In that order, maybe Mendoza before Salta. Completely different vibes but as charming as B.A.

I've noticed in comments an interest in looking for similarities between Buenos Aires and CDMX, but they're tiny....
Buenos Aires is not only different from CDMX and the rest of Latin America (we can extend this difference with Latin Amercia to a large part of Argentine cities) but to reference it u gotta look at great capitals of Western Europe, and it's no coincidence...
Buenos Aires is nicknamed "Paris of America" and making history:
In mid-19th century, Paris was demolished and rebuilt as we know it today; in the same way, shortly after, Buenos Aires was also demolished and rebuilt in the image of Paris, with its architectural styles of that time: beaux arts/academicism-art nouveau /deco and the layout of large boulevards/avenues/diagonals and proliferation of parks, like Paris....
regarding urban beauty, among major metropolises of the world, just Paris and London r at same level as Buenos Aires. If yu wanna have an idea of the urban environment of Buenos Aires, here:

I liked that the guided said Puerto Madero is one of the whealtiest neigborhood cause sometimes tourist only see that part and think we all live like that and that’s not it. I would recommend you to go to Agronomía, it’s a huge park open and it has a part of de Buenos Aires University (free education!) It’s lovely and the second saturday of everymonth has ferias. Like to sit a have a white pizza with olives on it and either a bottle of Malbec wine or a big bottle of Quilmes beer. I think some of the waiters are the same as when I was there a lot in the 80's! Also if You like a nice bottle of Malbec there is a delicious one that is called " San Telmo" just like the area that You stayed in. Also a great restaurant in San Telmo is "Desnivel" ( unlevel in English). Taxis/Ubers were $4-$8 around town, dinners out were around $10/$15 and so many of the attractions/museums were free or very low cost. I'll make more videos on the cost soon, but I wanted to be sensitive to the economic crisis they're currently going through, because I know it's a very difficult time for so many Argentinians at the moment. It definitely reminded me of CDMX in parts, although had way more European influences (from the Spanish and Italian). Overall it just felt bigger and slightly less chaotic than CDMX, but they're very similar! And I'll check out the music issue - thanks so much!

Hola Travis, from Mérida. Glad to see you and your adventures in BA. How does it compare to Mérida?

Hola!! It's muuuuuch bigger than Merida (which I miss!). But that's like comparing CDMX to Merida - kind of apples and oranges! Thanks so much for watching!

I can tell this dude was a big Anthony Bourdain fan by the narration at the end

Have you tried eating at Fogon Asada? They have 2 locations. Worth every penny!

I'm vegan, so I don't think they'd have anything for me - but it looks delicious for meat-eaters!

So you stayed from December through January? Sounds great to spend the entire summer there. My only concern is the air quality - does it get exacerbated with the heat and humidity?

I was there from mid-Jan to mid-March, and it was pretty perfect weather. Even when it was hot and humid, it was nice in the shade 🤷‍♂️ And I didn’t notice the air quality being poor, but I never check 😬 Went running most days though, so it couldn’t have been that bad 😆

    Great Video !
Middle of January is normally for us born&bred porteños (like me) sort of having a vacation in Hell
The city is mostly empty due to the heat and humidity.....everybody tries to escape to the seaside, inner rivers and lakes, or just abroad to the shores of Brazil, Uruguay or the Caribbean
The real city charms that make BA uncomparable to the other big metropolis in the world, do unfold in Autumn, Winter and Spring
So glad you did the tour with the inclusion of the one memorial to the 30K murdered by the Junta, sadly now the federal government as well as the city municipal administration (which has been ruining the city for the last 15 years) relate to those dark times
As a child (long long ago) I used to play along the docks and warehouses in the then already abbandoned old grain port (Puerto Madero), funny to the see those poshy beehives now, I travelled the whole world around and been to almost every big port in the different continents, but never saw rats the size of those that chased me and my lads in Puerto Madero when whe annoyed them for children fun
