    🌎 I spent a month living and working in Lisbon, Portugal as a digital nomad looking for a place to call home. I had no idea what to expect, but soon fell in love with the charming neighborhood of Alfama and the energy of the entire city. Here’s some of the things I mentioned in the video, but feel free to let me know what I missed in the comments!

    Love this, your year will be like an advent calendar of joy for us all. Lisbon was amazing, Porto too. Such warmth and friendliness. Glad you loved it. I enjoyed your thoughts on the skateboarders, this is truly how we grow,

    Gosh your videos are just so darn enjoyable to watch!! Your words continue to resonate so much, when you said "at the end of a year that almost ended me". I'll be traveling solo in February to also wander and find my rhythm again, and watching your journey is so inspiring. I hope you know the impact your public skateboarding-equivalent art is having! 😊

    Love it.
    We were just there.
    As marvelous as Lisbon is, it's just the tip of Portugal splendor.
    There is Porto, Sintra, Coimbra, Evora, and Tavira for starters.
    For us (sad) monolingual English speakers, English as a second language is required in schools there. So, you'll have little problem communicating at the very least with most locals under 30 or 40 yrs old. Also, a lot of signage in dual language, English and Portuguese.
    We'll be back, and can easily see living there permanently.
    Hell, I can still keep surfing there because Portugal has great surf spots and community. (Sorry San Diego, Sagres, and Nazare have it too!)

    I did a 2 month stay in Istanbul this summer. It's a fantastic city, and very affordable. It's also not in the EU, so the limitations on how long you can stay are separate. More places for you to consider - Budapest (beautiful, but not as affordable as it used to be), and Athens (affordable and excellent museums/archaeological sites). The three recommendations all have a common theme - fantastic food! LoL. Thanks for the video!

    Thank you for this video! I was in Lisbon the same time as you were (I stayed in Chiado). I absolutely LOVED it and watching this video, I saw all the places I walked to and made me happy! I didn't do much of the regular sightseeing, I rather enjoyed just strolling the neighborhoods, basking in the culture, and just being there. Last year we went to Portugal. So lovely, welcoming and very affordable especially for western Europe. I do recall seeing one VERY steep hill in Porto that actually had a handrail to help you climb up. We decided to take a 5 minute Uber to the restaurant even though we had walked 10 minutes to that point. We though, oh, the place is pretty close. Let's walk! 🤣🤣 We knew our knees were NOT up to that hill.

    So happy you made it to Europe. Maybe we'll run into each other as I'm in Europe also still. Do you remember Kat from Merida? She's hanging out in Croatia. I've seen pics throughout the summer of Portugal's Prime Minister. It seems as soon as his work day is done he ditches that suit as quickly as possible. There are pictures of him in old swim trunks hanging out at the beach talking with people. My favorite was of him again in ratty board shorts, sneakers and an old t-shirt standing in line at the grocery store with his basket of groceries.

Amsterdam is the city I transfer through most often. It's cold there now though. I love the Mediterranean so I gravitate towards France, Italy, Malta. Bruges in Belgium, Luxembourg, etc have fabulous architecture. I'm meeting my daughter and son in law in Paris in May. Just be really mindful of your backpack in the larger cities. Especially Paris, Barcelona. If someone bumps into you check your wallet right away. Many carry the pack facing the front. If you find a crossbody front pack you might benefit from that. They use the Euro, and while some things can be on the pricier side, it all depends on what you're looking for. Groceries (which I didn't show) were super affordable and there are a ton of low cost / free things to do around town. This site has a great breakdown of cost of living around the world if you're interested: www.theearthawaits.com/cost-of-living/in/lisbon/apartment1bedcitycenter/2/5bd495bb-b235-46e3-ae4e-f6c02e6d8530/

    After seeing myself in a gym mirror in mid-February, I've spent a lot of time at the gym. My first thought was this place has too many f@#$ing mirrors and my second was I don't like what I'm seeing in it. Granted I've been big-time into biking for many years, but I've lost about a dozen pounds, gone from a stretch 34 pants to 31, which I'm wearing now, (I'm about 6' 3") and I can do 300+ lbs on the leg press. I did 3 sets of +/- 325 lbs (2 sets of 12 and 1 set of 10 a few weeks ago), but I got sick with some of the "crud" around here a couple of weeks ago. So, I'm not quite at that level right now. I like my little gym. BTW, they make New Balance shoes in my state. 👍👍 :)

    I would not be surprised if we walked right past each other in Lisbon. I spent a December day and the weather was AH-MAZING that day. Seems like those days are few and far between this time of year. I've been staying about an hour or so north in a small town because that's where my friends moved. No car, few transport options, friends busy setting up their new home....in hindsight (and next time) I'll stay somewhere else and probably have a much different experience. Anyway, I've been watching you since Merida. I used to live there...then Queretaro. Just left in August to explore Europe. I'll email you if you want to keep in touch. EDIT: No email; tried DMing, but you have it all locked down lol 🤷‍♀

    Purely for living, MX City or Lisbon?

    • @TravelWTravis
      @TravelWTravis  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends what you’re looking for? Mexico City is massive compared to Lisbon, so there’s much more going on all the time. Lisbon has more of a smaller town vibe (although it’s still a nice sized city) and it’s got the water right there, which I love. They both are super appealing to me, so it’s hard to choose 🤷‍♂️😬

    Cool video, but I most certainly have a major problem with the lies that the African "tour" guide told you about Portugal being the last European country to stop the sale of African slaves. In fact, Portugal was among the first European countries to abolish such sales nationwide! It happened by Royal decree in the 1700s, whereas in Britain, for example, it didn't happen until the 1800s. Also, I have a problem with the notion that the Portuguese had been directly involved in enslaving any indigenous African people before selling them. Those African slaves had already been enslaved by their African warlords, as it was a well-established custom amongst the various warring tribes to take in men, young boys, young girls, and women from any vanquished rival villages in the many, many local skirmishes; and either keep them as slaves or sell them to the Europeans and/or into the Middle-Eastern slave trade -- a fact that all of those who like to peddle the ongoing narrative of "blame-the white-devil-for-all-the-evil-in-the-world" like to ignore!

    • @TravelWTravis
      @TravelWTravis  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching and commenting! And while you're right - Portugal banned the sale of people within the country itself in 1761, they didn't stop the sale of Africans within its colonies until 1869, which is what our guide was referring to. As far as Africans engaging in the trade themselves, that's definitely true and relatively well-known. The tour didn't reference any white devil; we mostly discussed the horrors of that time and the bravery of the Africans (and some Europeans) who worked to abolish the practice. Thanks again for your comment and hope you have a wonderful day!
