- I love my teles but at one point in time all I ever wanted was an archtop. I dreamt and salivated over Benedettos, Hofners, Campellone, and yes Gibsons. I had dreams of L4s, L5s, Super 400s and of course Gibson es 175s.

HISTORY OF THE GIBSON ES-175
Gibson produced the ES-175 from 1949 to 2017, the longest production run of an electric guitar.
The ES-175 was designed to be a cheaper laminate alternative to the L-5 and an electric alternative to the L-4.
Because of the rise of electric guitars, acoustic volume was not a priority anymore. This allowed guitar builders to use laminated (thin pieces of wood glued together) maple instead of solid spruce for the tops.
The laminate construction resulted in a lighter guitar (2,52 kg / 5.55 lbs) with less feedback compared to solid wood guitars.

I finally got my 1979 Gibson ES 175D today. Excellent plus condition. Trade and some cash..good to go.

I have an old single pickup model of the ES-175 (Herb Ellis), and it is by far the best designed, easy to play, and most beautiful guitar I have. I can make one suggestion about dealing with the dark tone that this model often has. That is to flip the neck pickup around so the pole pieces are facing the bridge instead of the neck. That made all the difference I wanted. It is an easy "mod" to try, and easily returned back to the standard position if you don't like it. Thanks

Lovely playing, lovely guitar. I finally after many years finally bought one in March 2023. It's a well used 2001 cherry red finish with gold hardware. I admit it's a tad gaudy but not by much. I've put off this purchase for nearly two decades and I'm old (71 quickly approaching 72)... It was time to 'get 'er done'. All I can say is that, yes!! So glad I pulled the trigger. To you, God bless and may you play on for many, many years!!
I bought mine in 1980.( I was an avid Steve Howe fan) It looks identical to yours. Ive recently gone over to flatwound strings and that has given it a fresh breath of life

I bought my es175d in1962 for $200, which was a lot of money then. I still love to play it. The thing that I love best is the neck and fretboard.

Just now caught your post. Very caressing tone, especially upper octaves. Man, I could hear that all day. And I agree about the better guitar would be one with solid wood: especially rosewood and spruce. But like Solomon said, "money answereth all things."

Nice Sunburst ES-175D....I always wanted an Ebony ES-175D.
I prefer the thinline archtops compared to full sized, because they are more comfortable to play, and (more importantly) the sound is more focused with less bass, a better tone amplified - just my opinion. In the video where you played that inexpensive Grote, a ES-125T copy, that was some excellent tone. This Gibson ES-175 sounds great too, just depends on what you prefer.
Cool vid and I've seen a few of you others as well, wonderful playing in all. Cool to see we similar guitar tastes as I also love my tele for jazz and I was fortunate to grab one of those Epiphone ES 175 premiums that I'm just now switching to playing over the tele to put in some time on it, but I love the tele tone and playability. Nowhere near your level of playing though...

Haha, I could listen to that opening bit all night. There’s nothing like listening to some nice jazz from an ES 175. My mind immediately goes to Ella Fitzgerald singing to Joe Pass doing “the one I love belongs to somebody else” (look it up on TH-cam, you won’t be disappointed)

This must be the fancy version of the es 175 some of the others look less fancy with dot inlay and no flower pot logo on the head stock, some call that wheat leaf on the head stock lol who knows the real name :) Peace, great playing and I have to look up this chord minor7thflat5 those jazz chords sound so nice. U are playing alot of jazz music 🎶 I can hear it in the sound it's smooth and has a great sound good tone it would sound even better w more volume it sounds better that way OMG 3 24 2O23
have had a 175 for 40 years....been a Scotty Moore fan for 65 years...never seen a pic of Scotty playing a 175.....more info please

Try the Heritage 575 and I believe the entire guitar is hand made with solid maple!
My dad has a 1980 model I believe comes with the pink furry case

Not yet, I am not a collector for from it. But I do have some good instruments and enjoy playing them and have a "nerdy" historical fascination about their history, players and other mundane facts. Thank you for watching much appreciated.

Those PAFs on vintage ES175s are unpotted but modern 175s have Classic 57s which are potted, correct?
Very nice guitar and playing... best moment "You don't need to play anything complicated, just simple chords..." then proceeds to play a plethora of m7b5, diminished, 13ths..." I guess you can't help yourself.
Ok you caught me...I just rewatched it and you are correct...I said simple and played a couple of major 7 chords and then played some of the more advanced (if you call them that) chords like dim, m7b5th, 13ths etc... oh well guilty as charged. Thank you for watching.

I think the most important thing is how the neck feels. After that, switch out the pickups to the Seth Lover model or maybe a Lindy Fralin PAF style

Would it be too much to ask if you could provide a list of players of the ES-175 (or it's clones)? I'm curious about the types of tunes I might like to learn.
Famous players of the 175 include Joe Pass, Pat Metheny. A more modern player who exclusively uses a 175 is Jonathan Kreisberg.

Balanced and neutral..not dominant sound like a GB model or L5. Ive had several of each. My Eastman 308 is basically an 175 with Ebony and wider neck. My Ibanez PM 35 is great also.
Hard to find a good ES175 these days. I was considering a Eastman AR372. Have you played the Eastman and if so would you recommend? Thanks
I've played many Eastman 372s and Gibson 175s over the years. I also own a 2011 ES175 and a 2014 Eastman AR380 (a John Pisano model but essentially a beautifully upscaled AR372-basically with the same body and neck, AFAICT). They might be _visually_ similar, but tonally they are not at all the same; the Eastman is _much_ more acoustic sounding, the Gibson darker and thicker sounding tonally. TBH, I happen to love both their sounds, but make no mistake, they're not anywhere near the same guitar. You'd _really_ want to try them both out if at all possible.
Wonderful playing and sound ! What amp are you using ? My first jazz guitar was an ES175 that I bought used in 1970...paid 350 for it...wish I still had it ! This video makes me want to own one again ! What was the clone that you liked...I couldnt quite understand.

I am playing a Henriksen jazzamp...either a Bud or Jazzamp 10 can't recall which one.

Orville by Gibson is a good copy, but it is not much cheaper than the Gibson. It is probably closer to an original PAF model though.

I’m quite sure he referred to the Epiphone ES-175 premium. Great guitars with Gibson ‘57 classic pickups and a nice satin-y finish. I actually bought a 2014 one today so i was glad to hear people like it ;)
Out of the many guitars you’ve played/own, which is your favorite and why?
Very difficult question. Right now it would have to be the Nash guitar. The neck feels worn in and it gets a nice warm tone with very little effort.
I’m stuck between getting a 355 or 175 as my first hollow or semi electric, any suggestions???
Check the ES-135, particularly in ebony with P90's
If you dig thinline guitars, the ES-175 comes in a thinline version, which makes it feel more like a 335 in heft. Look for an ES-175T.
The trapeze tailpiece will give a different string reaction than a 335, with its Tune-O-Matic bridge, but the block underneath the bridge keeps it from feeding back like a full hollowbody guitar.
Can you tell us what amp you're using and also what year your guitar is from?
I am using a Henriksen Bud and the guitar is a 1980 es 175d
