    Used to love playing on the Parliament escalators as a kid. Used to catch the train down from Morwell and have a day in the city - mainly just tooling around on trams and trains. Back when the Connies were still a thing. 👍. And am I the only one who remembers the old CRT monitors at the loop stations that the writing used to bend and change colour as a train approached and left? 😁

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like you had a lot of fun 😊. I did not use the trains enough to remember CRT displays warping but the electronics in modern trains is very likely to do that.

      The CRTs changing colour was due to the 1500Vdc overhead wires in the tunnels.
      When a train approaches or departs, the DC current is high which produces a strong magnetic field that bends the cathode beams in the CRTs.

      Exactly. When I was young, cab rides were so easy to get and if you want to watch my video Sly drives of Electric Trains, if you knew a friend who was a driver he may let you drive the train under supervision. If caught today, they would sack you. In the past, you could probably talk your way out of it. The world has changed but not for the better.

      It is very possible. The Rail Safety Act clearly says that there should be no unauthorised persons in the cab, and that includes other train drivers taking a ride to work.

    • @tressteleg1

      Malcolm Herbert Maybe I misled you. The driver does take the scenes. I should have quoted another rule which states no electronic devices in the cab. That rule was to stop mobile phone use but of course cameras are electronic devices also. Would they take action against him if caught? Possibly.

      @@tressteleg1 Yes i agree, though for some travellers may have a presence for Parliament first stop after Richmond more so than Flinders street and going the long way around? It is thought many passengers may exit at Richmond and try and board an overcrowded Burnley Group Train rather than ride the majority of the loop to get to their chosen station, time will tell?

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rod Wilkinson I think it more important that casual city train users should know that the train will always go from one particular platform at any station. Chopping and changing at different times of the day and further at weekends is what pisses me off. And having to go via Flagstaff to get from North Melbourne to Southern Cross is plain idiotic

  • @Techno-Universal
    @Techno-Universal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also believe that due to how no trains coming from North Melbourne could enter the Caulfield loop the two portals at the Flinders Street end must be facing towards Richmond and connect to two separate lines that come from Richmond! :)

      Techno Universal I have never studied the layout of the city loop in any detail. My impression is that it is poorly operated. The fact that at certain times there are no direct trains between Southern Cross and North Melbourne is totally ridiculous, and that has been the case for decades.

    Fantastic video. I do, however, want to make a correction. At around the 10m 30s mark you note a signal displaying Red/Green and an explanation of what it means. Although the explanation for a red over green is correct, the signal is actually displaying YELLOW over Green which means "Reduce to Medium speed (40km/h in the absence of a "65" or "80" indicator)". The previous signal showed Green over Red. Red over Green would never be preceded by Green over Red as it gives the driver no warning to slow down (hence the need for the "Reduce to Medium" aspect)..A Driver may pass a Yellow/Green signal at road speed but must have the train slowed to 40km/h (or 60 or 80 as the case may be) before passing the next signal.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I remember looking at that signal many times to determine whether it was red or yellow. Despite doing these videos, I cannot get all the signal combinations in my head so the impossibility of what I wrote was not obvious to me but I have consulted Simon my signalling expert and confirmed your correctness. If anyone else notices and comments I will refer them here.

  • @Ztbmrc1
    @Ztbmrc1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Again a nice video tressteleg1. Like it. What is the use of trips in the tunnel without signals? Or is it for redundancy, when the first trip fails to stop a train approaching a signal at danger, the second one will, and definatly the third one will stop the train?

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is a train in the station and another comes along, if it comes too fast the trip arms will be up and it will be stopped. Otherwise as the second train approaches, the trip arms will go down one by one and the second train can get quite close to the first train safely.

    • @Ztbmrc1
      @Ztbmrc1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tressteleg1 Hmm so when the second train would be tripped by the trip closest to the station (where the other train is still standing), the second train would not be brought to a stand still in time and would still hit the first train in the station. Guess it is that.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The engineers are much smarter than that. The rate at which each trip goes down is timed such that unless the train is simply creeping along, it will be stopped well short of the final trip and have to start from stop again. Certainly the last trip in the tunnel would remain up while the first train is still in the station. Maybe the second last trip would also remain up until the train had moved away. Additionally, the underground platforms are somewhat longer than the trains so the back of the stationary train would be well away from the tunnel mouth and well away from the final trip which will be up. If you live in Melbourne, you can take a look and see by how much. You can be certain that a system that is not 100% safe would not have been installed.

      @@tressteleg1 Ok, thanks for explaining

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We need to remember that if an engineer designed a signal system that was not foolproof and somebody died in a collision, the engineer could end up in court.
      Sydney has/had such a system working in their underground from 1932, without problem as far as I know.

      I don’t know but often the camera exaggerates. I know that the Skyrail ramps are set at 1:40 which is OK. I suppose tunnel grades would be no steeper.

    • @steveallen1340
      @steveallen1340 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      tressteleg1 hi, I imagine a suburban passenger train is capable of climbing grades much greater than a freight train, is that right? Freight trains need to negotiate sky rail (I think 1 in 40 would be right at their limit but could be wrong) but never go through the loop. The loop could have a steeper grade? When it comes to grades what limits a passenger train, it’s technical capability or passenger comfort and safety given a lot of passengers will be standing?

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Allen I’m not A student of railway grades but certainly it is something like one in 30 from Wynyard up onto the harbour bridge. Freight trains could handle this but only if you add enough extra locomotives, preferably spread through the train like the Queensland coal trains do. Maybe somebody else will reply with your answers.
