Dr. Laboriel, is the best bass player I have heard. But he is also one of the more personable guys you would ever meet . Very out going and encouraging to other players.
Leland Sklar plays a wonderful array of tasty goodness, pocket master, catchy and cool cause he is a pop bassist and understands space and time better than most!!
What an awesome collection of living bass legends. My ears and eyes were so genuinely excited and blessed. I dream of playing in a band of this caliber. 😎
All they needed was John Mcvie on stage there. He is my first favorite blues bassist, but recently stumbled across Leland TH-cam videos and never heard if him. He is now my very, very close second favorite.
When you realize how much of our modern musical aesthetic he had a hand in creating, Lee grows tremendously in stature. 25,000 tracks, I think Steve said elsewhere. Emerging with James Taylor in 1970, and playing in every genre and most of the globe in the 54+ years since, he's got the skills _and_ the cred.
It's interesting; even if you don't have the ear to hear exactly who's doing what, you can watch where their attention goes, and it's always Lee and the drums. I understand that Lee is carrying the bottom for the soloists to play off of, but his "hand," his technique, is so fine tuned, he's there when they need him to be and not when they don't-- flawlessly. Bass players, musicians in general, love to play with Lee. And even if I didn't like him on my own judgment, that would tell me all I need to know.
I remember Leland's comment on this video, He would only agree to do it if they would let him "Play Bass"! That is, he got to hold down the bottom end, as a bassist is supposed to !
Sadly this sort of "jam" tends to completely obscure all the best bits of bass playing. Even with modern "hifi" basses, there are so many lows it's just overlapping layers of mud. Lee did a great job of trying to stay out of the way, but it's still hard to listen to.
Love to see these bassists feeding off each other. Which is what musicians should do when playing together. As GREAT as all these players are, my favourite is Lee. Sure he has chops to rival the best of them. But for me he is doing the bassists job on this one. Laying it down and keeping it in the pocket. And that beard....makes him the coolest guy up there.
Murdo2112 Abe's ear is up there, and while Lee is certainly playing the bass, Abe had the most musical insight. Jonas is handicapped with a half acoustic bass, and Steve is also in a weird boat as always with his 6 string fretless, which is a way also a handicap although no one is arguing his mastery of music and the stage. Abe owns it with his instrument and his ear. A proper 24 fret 5 string bass with a modern setup is always gonna get my vote, especially for lead work over the top of a groove.
@@kens32052 So interesting that Lee mentioned in one of his home (quarantine) videos that - even when he needs to use a 5-string for certain contexts for the occasional note below E, he still has his mindset in 4-string mode and mainly plays a 5-string like a 4-string - only using the low B whenever necessary. That is always how I approached 5-string too. Great minds think alike! LOL (As if!) I am a guitar player first and just play bass in sessions when needed. I love Lee. He feels like my new brother during this Covid thing with his candid video offerings. It's very cool and he seems like a real down-to-earth sweet guy. He has been such a huge part of all of our music soundtrack history over the decades. Long may he play. Cheers.
All have shown their history and has its value, I think everything was improvised, but is good, imagine it being recorded directly from the table and mixed all channels would appear incredible things. Congratulations to Jaco! We see that all bassists have influenced him.
These guys show it all.. playing in the pocket, setting up a groove, the melody and blowing notes like crazy. This is about as good as it gets. Practice and appreciate, and hope you can get somewhere near it... and not one high register instrument for 1,000 miles.
Not my favorite style of bass playing, but I’ll give these guys credit for being incredible bassists. I prefer to hear great bass playing in the context of an actual song featuring several other instruments.
@@kens32052 he must have quit shaving and cutting his hair in high school. He was still in college when he started playing professionally, and I've never seen him as anything but a longhair. Not that I've ever tried, but it takes awhile to grow a 10+ inch beard....

Years of combined experience on the stage; around 250 years!
