Just watching Sklar's fingers as he plays bass is a wonder to behold. Incredibly fluid and engaging playing. definitely one of the great bass players of all time.
He definitely is great. He plays bass...he doesn't try to stand out and play 'lead bass', like a lot of well known 'bass' players do. Even when he does something a little flashy, he still serves the song. Always tastefully.
Lee plays so fluently, so smooth... he never looks at his neck... amazing bass player... Fantastic timing, huge sense of groove and vital support to the music... woaow...
As a 40 year fan of Phil and his band, I am so happy to see a whole new young generation of fans here that found and love Leland Sklar and Daryl Stuermer and appreciate them for not only their immense talent, but also their contributions to so many other artists and Phil. Fantastic
Sklar & Chester Thompson are rock steady! Love the way PC was looking at Chester during some of the drum fills, total approval & admiration from great drummer to great drummer!
Daryl (Top Tier Guitarist- plus) is killing it, Chester is right on the groove and Lee has it all locked together. Just absolutely wonderful music from a time that will NEVER be duplicated, ever again!!!
The name. Leland Sklar. Provided bass parts for over 2000 records. Not to mention, motion picture soundtracks and major tours. Pop,Jazz, Country, rock _ dude is a chameleon. This 5.26m clip is just a prime example of why he's worked for so long. Grooving. Pocket is wonderous. Bass tone is killing. A serious joy to watch. Always in awe of this man. You are absolutely AMAZING brother.
WOW Leland Sklar THE BEST as the vibe and grove that you exert makes the whole beat just folwwwww, thank you for showing a real master at work WOW Leland, I've been a fan since the 80's, greetings from Sydney Australia PEACE!!!
I finally hung up my bass after 52 years full time when covid shut everything down. Leland has a natural approach to not only the melodic structure, but most importantly, the timing. Bass players have 2 jobs, the melodic, and the percussive section. Leland is a true master.
That is sensational. I must share my Leland story. Back then I was a hooked on Phil and Genesis. When Phil toured Aus I would see every Sydney show (don’t remember how many but he almost did a residency 😁) and would sleep out to get great tickets. Pretty much always front row or there about. So after a couple of nights of shows and me in nearly the same seat every night Leland acknowledged me. The only band member to do that (not that I expected or wanted it) by giving me a wave, a smile and a thankyou and applause back to me as I applauded him. It was a moment of real connection between two music lovers. That might sound exaggerated but it wouldn’t have stuck with me all these years if it had been a flippant gesture. He appreciated that the audience is half of what makes a great show.
Really great bass players like this are often never really heard isolated so we don’t know how great they are until we can SEE them play. Leland has just amazing technique and touch. Bravo sir!!
Far and away one of the best rhythm sections ever, Leland Sklar on bass and Chester Thompson on drums/percussion. These two were locked together as if it was a single person playing both parts. 😎🤘
Leland is so flawless, his playing have so much groove. You should go check his Channel, He is still amazing player and playing all the old song he played on.
Imagine being able to play with a group of Musicians THIS good.... I mean, I dont think Ive ever seen Leland make a mistake live with Phil. And I have watched a lot of their shows. As a drummer and bass player myself, being able to play with musicians of this caliber just gives you so much confidence and eases all of your worries allowing you to play freely.
I can’t tell you how many times when watching concert footage, that i spot Mr. Sklar adding his two cents.😂 What a great musician, and storyteller. Much respect brother.
After watching numerous video’s of Leland’s playing, I love how deep, and filled with emotion, he gets into the songs. Money can’t buy the experience he has!,,
Leland's cheeky little bass wobble at 3.40 always hits the spot, for all the shows on the But Seriously tour i was waiting for that, bloody brilliant!!!!:))))
Think of it this way....I would give anything to be AS good at ANYTHING as these musicians are with their instruments, it's humbling. I hope people are still marveling at this live performance 100 years from now.
Leland nails this with the beauty of a true bass layer. The 32nd fills on the connecting riff at the second bridge is a work of art. I started playing bass in 64 and I can tell anyone, Leland nails every note. Thanks !
This has to be one of the “greatest” bands ever to have been put together! Every musician at the top of their game and when Phil brought them all together..........wow! Would have loved to have seen this tour. Magical.
One can only imagine what it's like to be one of them, sitting at home, looking at a stack of bills that need to be paid...wondering when (and where ?) their next gig is gonna be...when outta the blue the phone rings...and it's Phil: "I'm putting a band together...9 month tour...mostly europe...two gigs in the U.S....one down in Sao Paulo...then possibly another album...got 6 new songs to put down on tape...a few more to work out...I like your stuff, heard a few of the gigs you've done...are you interested ?" I'd be like....uhmmm...like YEAH ? !
Leland I am SOO glad I stumbled upon your page.. Truly as mentioned in other vids of yours, I just saw a man w a Beard and a Bass and said hmmm looks interesting... Turns out I am a huge Phil Collins fan, but now I am a Leland fan too!! you re amazing and ass a drummer youre my man! the rhythm Section!! Your playing is incredible!!
It has to be such a HIGH to look out there and see a sea of people cheering for you!!! Phil definitely gave them their moneys worth!!! ;-) Great video.
The stages and crowds Lee Sklar has seen and played in his lifetime, He's seen a million(s) faces, and ROCKED them ALL..... will never be another like him
Love videos with rare changing views. Great to watch these wonderful musicians for a longer time. Faszinating, how Leland goes along with the guitar-solo. 👍❤🔥
My F'ing GOD!!!!!!! Imagine being on stage performing this song...just once!!!!!!!! And how do you think it would feel to be Daryl Stuermer nailing that lead break at the end...I would have to work on myself mentally to hold it together. Has to be one of the greatest feelings...ever!!!!!!
30 years later I saw a white bearded Leland Sklar talking about music on TH-cam and do playalongs to the songs of Phil Collins and I`m soooo glad, that I can type this comment listening to this awesome music!
Every person on that stage is absolutely top draw, hand picked by Phil who at this point could have anyone in the world play for him. Its an honour to watch and learn.
Been watching Leland Sklar's youtube channel this last week of him playing along to past Phil Collins live concerts, absolutely awesome bass player, what a talent !!!! :)
Certainly one of THE MOST talented human beings EVER to inhabit planet Earth. REAL sorry he’s struggling of late. God Bless you Phil, you are an awesome entertainer. Prayers…
The music comes from within one's self. It has to be felt when played, its a wonderful feeling that nothing else can compare to. This is a perfect example.
Exactly why I play the bass, I want to feel it when I play... along with all of my neighbors. Joking aside, what a great live gig; these guys are definitely locked up and "in the music."
I think at this point in his career, Leland Sklar had played on over 14,000 major label songs or something. These days, it's like 25k-30k songs. It's so many that nobody, even Sklar, knows the exact number. Dude is about as legendary as a legend can be.
You’d be hard pressed to find a better rhythm section duo than Chester Thompson on drums and Leland Sklar on bass. They were fixtures for Phil Collins on his solo tours.
Saw them in Dallas and Atlanta. Met Phil backstage twice. My wife had on a beautiful fringe leather jacket adorned with beads in Atlanta...Phil loved it.
And cool as a cat too. Met him years ago and one hell of a guy. Him, Daryl and Chester are AWESOME musicians and work together like a well oiled machine...
Favourite track of Phil’s ever. Sadly I never got to this gig although I damn made sure I saw him with Genesis in my home town last year. Darryl was there too but they are a total different vibe playing Genesis tracks. Great video and Lee’s playing is so efficient it’s untrue . Thank you Mr Sklar
I was fortunate enough too meet and talk with PHIL on his very first solo tour I’ll never forget it he was so cool and down too earth Daryl and Chester were both there as well

Would be nice if he could be heard more clearly imho
@Paul_SD listen with headphones and you can hear him clearly
Lee plays so fluently, so smooth... he never looks at his neck... amazing bass player... Fantastic timing, huge sense of groove and vital support to the music... woaow...
SUPER talent ... Fer Sure!!!
Felix Weber absolutely!!!! The guy oozes groove :)))
Great summary of his playing
As a 40 year fan of Phil and his band, I am so happy to see a whole new young generation of fans here that found and love Leland Sklar and Daryl Stuermer and appreciate them for not only their immense talent, but also their contributions to so many other artists and Phil. Fantastic
Sklar & Chester Thompson are rock steady! Love the way PC was looking at Chester during some of the drum fills, total approval & admiration from great drummer to great drummer!
Such a shame they fell out. 😢
Daryl (Top Tier Guitarist- plus) is killing it, Chester is right on the groove and Lee has it all locked together. Just absolutely wonderful music from a time that will NEVER be duplicated, ever again!!!

Yeah but what about the male backup singers drip?
His channel starting from the pandemic is really cool stuff, I love hearing his stories
And the dude even deliver gifts to the kids in christimas
Casts lvl 9 Magic Missile too
The number of records you stated he has played bass on is just a bit low...it's actually over 25,000! I like your comments, though!
It took half the video to find him, but they eventually did and it shows just how dang good “that guy with the beard” really is!
WOW Leland Sklar THE BEST as the vibe and grove that you exert makes the whole beat just folwwwww, thank you for showing a real master at work WOW Leland, I've been a fan since the 80's, greetings from Sydney Australia PEACE!!!
Incredibly beautiful Bass playing, sounds are ethereal! Drummer is Awesome-Phil? Man Phil Nails It vocally!! 🎶💯💯😎
Chester Thompson on drums- as good as it gets
I finally hung up my bass after 52 years full time when covid shut everything down. Leland has a natural approach to not only the melodic structure, but most importantly, the timing. Bass players have 2 jobs, the melodic, and the percussive section. Leland is a true master.
Groove master. Truly and in every way. Leland is the king.

Check out Spectrum by Billy Cobham.
Thank you Leland Sklar for your many years strumming your bass guitar and hanging out with Mr. Collins. Awesome collaboration.
So much fun just watching the coolest bass player just clicking with his groove!!! So relaxed and elegant somehow♥️♥️
Bass player is Leland Sklar. He’s amazing, played on 2,000 albums and toured with everyone. His TH-cam channel is great.
Imagine being able to play with a group of Musicians THIS good.... I mean, I dont think Ive ever seen Leland make a mistake live with Phil. And I have watched a lot of their shows. One of my favorite (and one of the most underrated) Phil Collins songs. So cool seeing it live.
I can't get over how STUNNING this live performance is! 🤘🤘
1990: Leland the Brown.
2000: Leland the Grey.
2020: Leland the White.
He is the Gandalf of Bass.

Leland Sklar is so solid in so many songs for so many artists,. His resume is truly unbelievable and unmatched.
And a super humble nice guy, I ran into him 1 day when he was walking his cute dogs and told him how much loved his career and yt channel 😊
After watching numerous video’s of Leland’s playing, I love how deep, and filled with emotion, he gets into the songs. Money can’t buy the experience he has!,,
Never ceases to amaze me.
The fluency in how he plays is Extraordinary. Touching..
I've played bass for 50 years, and I'll never get near Leland Sklar's level. he is just amazing!
Sklar rocking the late 80's Miami Vice look...Hot Pink t-shirt with a sports blazer. Gangster.
Leland's cheeky little bass wobble at 3.40 always hits the spot, for all the shows on the But Seriously tour i was waiting for that, bloody brilliant!!!!:))))
Leland Sklar's playing is so smooth. He is the personification of rock and roll cool....
Look at his fingers man! Incredible!!
Incredible footage of the rythme section: powerful and ultra talented Chester and Lee! Blessing we have been at that Time! WoW Gratitude!
Leland Sklar is amazing. What's amazing is that he hasn't aged a bit over the years. I wonder if he's looked like a 100 year old wizard since birth?
Think of it this way....I would give anything to be AS good at ANYTHING as these musicians are with their instruments, it's humbling. I hope people are still marveling at this live performance 100 years from now.
Amazing
Wow, what a great live band, they all sound absolutely amazing.
Lee shredding at the end haha.
It's unhealthy, how many times I've returned to play 2:50 to the end. ;) Thanks Leland! What an inspiration!
Leland nails this with the beauty of a true bass layer. The 32nd fills on the connecting riff at the second bridge is a work of art. I started playing bass in 64 and I can tell anyone, Leland nails every note. Thanks !
men... that guitar solo at the end its from another world, simply amazing!
Crazy right?! 8/2024 incomparable
Hard to believe this is 30 years ago and now mr.leland active on his own youtube channel.
This has to be one of the “greatest” bands ever to have been put together! Every musician at the top of their game and when Phil brought them all together..........wow! Would have loved to have seen this tour. Magical.
Lee Warder One of my biggest regrets is not seeing Phil live during his prime.
Don’t get any better than that
The suspension on the chorus chords is perfect! Leaves you hanging and locks you into the groove for a bar or two before coming back. So satisfying.
Love that smile Phil gives Chester when he’s banging away there near the end and Stuermer , Sklar just killing it !!
Chester Thompson... What a drummer!!! Incredible.
He’s a phenomenal Drummer, he’s played drums for some legendary bands 🔥🔥🔥👌🏽
Chester Thompson?.

Happy 70th birthday Phil. Thank you for all the songs you gave to us & thank you for your work with Genesis.
I remember seeing Phil right after that song came out. Leland was in rare form that evening. He’s one of my all-time faves.
That upper octave hammer on at 3:41 is awesome. Playing in the pocket and adding stuff like that is my favorite aspect of bass.
Great performance @Leland Sklar! Look at you all dapper!
Subbed to Leland a couple of days ago. Lovely guy.
I was only 16 during this tour, but I would give anything to go back and see this incredible group of musicians and singers .

the bass solo made all the difference in the music and with the saxophone it was even more beautiful
Jee, how can one simple man make this music?! Mr. Collins making goosebumps for 3 generations at least
This looks so easy.. Fantastic moves. You are so talented.
I think at this point in his career, Leland Sklar had played on over 14,000 major label songs or something. These days, it's like 25k-30k songs. It's so many that nobody, even Sklar, knows the exact number.
Dude is about as legendary as a legend can be.
You can say that again. You look up the definition of Bass player, and all you will see is a picture of Lee!!!!!
interstellish go to his channel and you can watch him p,ay those songs....and tell wonderful stories of the road...
That's like Wilt Chamberlain level numbers lol.
The bass is the glue for any band sound. He plucks the strings like a man caressing a beautiful woman. Epic.
Perfectly stated
One of the best out there, and such a humble man. I love his work, the man is a legend!
Every member of that band is, or was at the top of their game. A handful of the best Musicians available.
Leland Sklar is just freaking awesome no way around it he's a living legend!
I hope you’ve checked out Leland’s own TH-cam channel. Nearly 900 videos covering all the music that he’s been involved with.
Yes!!!
You’d be hard pressed to find a better rhythm section duo than Chester Thompson on drums and Leland Sklar on bass. They were fixtures for Phil Collins on his solo tours.

I was fortunate enough too meet and talk with PHIL on his very first solo tour I’ll never forget it he was so cool and down too earth Daryl and Chester were both there as well
The entry for "bass player" in the dictionary should simply be a photo of Leland Sklar.
he is such a legend !
