This post is for those who are struggling to choose the right optional subject in the UPSC journey. Save this post, and re-read it.
There are many misconceptions about the optional subjects in the UPSC Civil Services. Here are some of them:
1. Misconception 1: GS is more important than the Optional
For Prelims, this is absolutely true. However, Prelims is only a qualifier. Whether you like it or not, your rank, your services, and your cadre in the civil services will be determined by your performance in the Essay, Optional, and Interviews. While there will be massive averaging in General Studies, the variability in the Essay, Optional, and Interviews will make or break your chances in the exam. Therefore, preparing for the optional subject well in advance makes a lot of sense.
2. Misconception 2: You should choose an optional that you have studied in your graduation
This is pure nonsense. It is totally fine to choose an optional subject that you have not studied in your graduation. Many BA/MA graduates in Political Science and IR have scored much lower marks than those who studied engineering/physics/chemistry/Medicine/Accountancy and still chose PSIR as their optional. Why does this happen?
Candidates from different backgrounds often adopt a more structured and analytical approach to studying new subjects. Success in the UPSC Exam is not just about knowledge but also about exam strategy. Additionally, candidates who have not studied a subject during their graduation might approach a new subject with a fresh perspective, leading to a more analytical and comprehensive understanding of the material.
3. Misconception 3: Choose a specialized optional in Physics, Maths, or Chemistry
It is totally fine if you are in love with these subjects, but ideally, choose an optional that overlaps with the GS papers. You will start appreciating this feature in the two months between your Prelims results and the Mains exam date.
Subjects like PSIR, Public Administration, Geography, and Sociology often cover topics relevant to GS papers. While this might not seem important now, it becomes extremely crucial during the time frame between Prelims and Mains. Additionally, this overlap is advantageous in the interviews as well, as your board will evaluate your performance in your optional subject. They will ask questions around your optional.
At the end of the day, no matter which optional you choose, your goal should be to be among the top 1% of those who chose that optional that year. A subject that you are passionate about will be the subject you will study passionately, which can sustain your interest and drive, leading to better results.
On 15th July, we look forward to starting the journey of Political Science and International Relations at MisFits. This is an optional subject that I have not only studied in theory but also practiced in real life. Our goal is two-fold : number 1 : make you fall in love with that subject, and once that happens, we will ensure that we achieve a score above 310+ in this beautiful optional.

The journey from here on will be an experience of a lifetime - as I get to cover a subject that have lived and experienced for the past 10 years - not just in theory, but also in practice.

Here is some realistic career advice:
Never opt for arts stream or go for any arts related courses. You will regret it for the rest of your life. Careers in Arts/humanities are not that plentiful or lucrative. This is the situation even in developed countries. Majority of the regretted degrees around the world are in the arts/humanities stream.
Talking about preparing for govt jobs, you can get a government job even if you have a degree in STEM or business and the variety of jobs available will be a lot more. The chances of going abroad will also be limited if you take arts courses. In fact, a lot of schools in India don't offer arts stream.
So guys, avoid arts at all costs. Get realistic guidance and select a better career.

USA is the largest or 2nd largest trade partner of nearly every country of the world. Every country in the world has USA products being sold, USA companies dominate the software world. USA thus has business interests with nearly every country in the world, Bangladesh isn't a special case.
China's increased investments and influence:
China has attempted and succeeded in extending trade relations and giving loans that they know the a country cannot repay with the aim to gain leverage over several countries. USA intervention in those cases have been economic, not militaristic.
Bangladesh being a strategic location for USA:
With a USA naval base present in Singapore, it already has a massive presence on the narrow passage through which all of China's Indian Ocean maritime trade passes. A possible future port in Bangladesh would be further away from these trade routes than Diego Garcia, which is much more centrally located. Over land, none of China's trade routes go anywhere near that area of the world because of the geography. A port in Bangladesh would be redundant.
The country the benifits the most from unrest in this area is not USA, it's China. It used the BRI to entice and gain leverage over Pakistan. Predatory loans to try to gain control over Sri Lanka, have become the primary diplomatic partner with the Maldives, are building military grade infrastructure in the Tibetian plateau near the border with India. We have several key naval shipyards on the eastern coast in the Bay of Bengal. A Bangladesh backed by China would lead to a true rival power entering the bay of bengal. It also makes the siliguri corridor more vulnerable.

Sir, with due respect to you, I'm from Bangladesh. I have been part of the protest and was also arrested by the cops (I'm free now). Along with me, around 20,000 students were arrested. Two thousand students were killed (it's true; the government tried to hide the massacre). I lost my friend; he was shot in the head, and I saw his skull blow away. The police shot from helicopters, and at least 32 kids were killed (who were in their own houses, maybe on the terrace). After all this, our minister literally said that no bullet was fired. I know it's really hard for a person to understand who is living outside the country, but if you still think it wasn't real and Hasina should still be in power, please let me know.

Nobody in India denies the police atrocities during the Hasina regime, but now that there is a power vacuum the far-right group could easily take over BD and thus destabilise the region. You cannot stop it as the administration has totally collapsed. BD could easily become another theocratic state like AFG, and that means 10X or more innocent subjects would die. Also, how far are you from a BoP crisis like SL? BD's per capita GDP was better than India's, but now Vietnam, China and India would take over the textile export contracts. Your demand should have been a free and fair election under the watchful eye of the UN, NOT regime change that introduces total hooliganism throughout BD.
My relatives(father is an immigrant) are bangladeshi hindus and they are shitting their pants right now because of this entire thing , they have been victims to islamic extremism repeatedly over the decades and currently the lights around religious temples that our families had build at our village are shut off to protect it, i comletely sympathize with what you said about your friend but i would like to emphasize that people who are not subject to equal vulnerabilities cant always react equally, where you see sheik hasina's resignation as the end of terrible times(as you should without anyone getting to tell you otherwise) it might be the beginning of a long relay of tragedies to others, dont take the responsibility of those you cant save in such realities cause you cant, our problems aren't the same,lookout for yourself enjoy better times with those who relate with you and people who cant be a part of that have to tread forth in a different journey, let them, understand that we are doing so to survive better (the world aint fair it doesn't have enough peace and victories to free everyone )this video is relevant to me ,im sorry that it invalidates you but its relevant to me and it was made for people like me.
