Hi Jon! I couldn’t agree more about the BX fuel filter design! I’ve seen other videos of folks changing BX filters and thought that it was an awful design. Nice work on the 200 hour maintenance! Thanks for sharing!
I put a barbed brass coupler on the hose going to the tank and added a piece of fuel line then pushed up a little and curved it above so that the next time I can disconnect the clamp and have room to pull down and access much easier.
Another great video (I know it's a couple years old). I just did my fuel filters for the first time. I have 100 hours. I don't know if I would wait longer, the underneath one was black inside. Jon regarding your left handed pliers....one thing to check is if your pliers was metric or standard. I’ve got a metric and standard crescent wrench set and love it

A RITTER BIT WILL DO John, what I meant was to run a fuel line from the fuel tank to the under the hood to the filter then run a line from the filter back to the fuel pump to get to the 2 nd filter. Then you could change the filter under the hood instead of under the tractor.
Hi Jon, I totally agree that lower fuel filter is a pain. At 49.2 hours I changed every filter and fluid, even the front axle, just for my own peace of mind. I will be relocating the lower fuel filter at the next service. I had a John Deere 332 with the Yanmar 3TN66 3cyl diesel. It had the electric fuel pump up in the engine area on the frame, and a single fuel filter attached to the engine that had a replaceable element. Kubota should get with it and do the same. Take care.
I had 25 hours on bx23s and stopped running. had to replace both fuel filters. It sucks that you have to get under the tractor and spend an hour changing this fuel filter. Is there an after-market larger filter that can be used? I also purchased a flo tool to filter the diesel so the crud does not get into the fuel line. Thanks
I replace the fuel filter under the tractor by installing a small see through water separator/fuel filter, which I placed near the front. don't want to scare you Jon but do a search on the Achilles heel of the Kubotas, the diff lock. Just lost my tractor to it. wondering why I had a hard time to put it in gear, I found out it was getting in gear by itself. Gone for warranty repairs after not even a year. The other problem on my BX is the quick disconnect on the FEL hoses. Mine were moving up and down and seeping oil. Miss my toy. :(
I wonder what the issue is regarding the diff lock. I haven’t heard of that before. I did have the quick disconnect leak and got that fixed under warranty. Hope the new fuel filter orientation is working well for you. Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon Of what I have read, it is a piss poor design and many have either cut the pedal off or disconnected it. I don't think I'll want to use it again when I get my tractor back. Just don't want to take any chance. It only had 143 hours on it.
Perfect timing since I have to do my 50 hour this weekend. I’ve got a lot to look forward to. Looks like removing the skid plate would have been beneficial prior to swapping the hydraulic filter.
With the filter wrench I have yes! However with a different wrench maybe not. It’s really a pain to get that little skid plate off also. Just warning ya. Keep on tractoring!
The reason why they have two fuel filters is a good idea the filter underneath the floor board is to pick up any debris from the fuel before it reaches the pump the second filter is safety feature because if the fuel pump goes bad they can come apart from the inside and the debris will be in the fuel that the filter by the engine will pick up it is the last line of defense before damage to the engine. But I do wish there was a water separator.
I get the concept but it seems like it should be an easy thing to fix. The filter is hard to get at and is prone to damage from brush and sticks. Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon If you have an idea, send it to them. As an former engineer, receiving a solution with the complaint can help make a design change happen a bit quicker if it has been thought out and we'll presented.
You have to be careful when cranking on those oil filters. The manual says to screw on until the rubber gasket just touches the engine and then tighten 1/2 turn only. That procedure holds true for most engines. The same is true for the transmission filter. HAND TIGHTEN 1/2 turn only... no wrench. :-)
I've heard that and probably have read that somewhere as well. However, I just don't trust that theory. I'd really hate to lose a filter a half turn with a wrench gives me peace of mind. Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon It's actually in your BX23S Operator's Manual. :-) Some filters like spin-on fuel filters will specify 3/4 turn after contact but oil filters are usually all 1/2 turn. Never had one fall off in over 50 years. In fact, with just 1/2 turn they still require a wrench for removal. Go figure. :-)
My boots are looking good! I"m happy to say they don't need replacing. They improved the boots for the 80 series. They used to be a pain in the butt on the older series BX's. Keep on tractoring!
Nice video. I put the after market filter on my BX and is worth every penny, just saying. By the way, the grease on your head....... Nice touch! Lol Keep on tractoring my friend and be safe.
That after market system looks great. I wonder how many more times I'll change the fuel filter underneath before I break down and just get one. Keep on tractoring!
we follow the routine service and still mark the dates on the filter's when we change them on the tractor's, because we don't always have time to check the routine service when we are working and that is why we put the dates on the filter's
I can see why that would make sense. With multiple pieces of equipment like I’m sure you have it would be hard to remember all the service intervals. Hope all is well Nate! Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon all is well on the farm but we have had good days and bad, all of the crops are doing good but with so little rain we have been running the irrigation system like crazy like about 3 times a day more they usual but what can you do it's farming, it's a way of life.
I have a 2021 bx2680 and it seems the coolant level frequently needs attention. I think it is a evaporation issue. No leaks anywhere. Only 25 hrs on my tractor now. do you experience this with your bx? Have you by chance heard of this with other folks?
I did have this issue with my BX and I tightened all the hose clamps on the cooling system and it seemed to help. I didn’t notice it leaking either, guessing it was a slow leak. Give that a try and see if it helps. Keep on tractoring!
Does that pain filter have to be underneath at that exact location because u can extend the hose near were the other is, maybe that will make things easier, am just thinking out loud, thanks for sharing Jon.
Kubota for some reason wanted to have filter before the fuel pump. I'm not sure why they do that, I don't think it's that big of a deal. I hope they fix the issue in future models. Keep on tractoring!
I did the 200 hour at 170. When you buy a 9 year old used tractor with only 140 hours, it is for sure time to change the fluids. To get it back on schedule I will just push everything except the engine oil change. I did however go ahead and change the hystat oil and front axle oil as well.
Hello, abusing your collaboration, it will be possible for you to explain to me where these two small filters are on the tractor. I imported it from Colombia and the catalog did not reach me and the change of fifty hours is about time. Thanks
One fuel filter is up near the engine on the left hand side and the other is directly under the floorboards. If you watch the whole video you’ll see what I mean. Keep on tractoring
@@ritterjon Thanks for your answer, since I have bothered you a lot, I promise that it is the last question. bone that this kit that buys the filters that it brings, instead of bringing them plastic brings them metallic, I am talking about the two little ones that appear in the link that I sent you and it is more advisable to put them on plastic. I'm seriously sorry for so many questions but I ignore a lot of this. www.ebay.com/itm/KUBOTA-FILTER-KIT-BX23-BX22-BX2660-BX2200-and-BX2670-HH150-32094-TOP-QUALITY-/261929228311?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292
Getting ready to do 50 hrs service - might leave the fuel filters a tad longer after watching this - oil and hydrolic fluid don’t seem too bad! Thanks for heads up..
Unfortunately deere has the exact same inline filter like the kubota underneath too tim has shown changing it before it looks like it's a pain also. They are just trying to protect the fuel pump I wish they'd find a way to relocate it and put a fuel water separator on like the deeres do
That other unit on Tim's JD is a water collector. Not really a filter. Found this as well :"he first filter protects this electric pump, the 2nd protects the engines fuel injectors if that pump happens to fall appart"
Most diesels have at least 2 filters. The first one would help with water..... sort of..... Wouldn't hurt to change the first one a bit more often (at least if you see it getting "brown") I am sure it does the job Kubota wants it to do, but totally agree they need to change the design. This is what you find in $2,000 ride on lawn mowers.....but even my mower has one that's easy to get to. If I bought one of these (will likely buy a B-series/2025R/Mahindra Max size.... I actually like them all but leaning toward a Kioti CX2510) At the end of the day buy the machine you like that will do the job you need - they are all good machines and each one will have things that seem like a stupid design, or cheap. No different with pickup trucks, cars or motorcycles.. (39 years as a mechanic)
Tractor Supply had 5-7 settlement bowl for fuel filter, 1 (ford) had a glass bowl for about 40 bux. Cleaning consists of turning off the valve, unsceweing the bulb, dump it out, wipe with a rag, reassemble-make sure gasket is in place, turn valve on. No extras ever.
You really don't need to change the fuel filter until 200 or 400 hours. I changed mine at 200 because I didn't want to deal with it during the winter in my unheated garage. Keep on tractoring!
That's true, I guess I assumed it was every 100 hours or so. Oh well, my filter underneath was pretty dirty partly because I unknowingly ran it without a fuel cap while clearing brush so better to be safe than sorry. Keep on tractoring!
I got some bad fuel for my 2009 BX25 a few years back. I appreciate the dual fuel filters, might have saved my fuel pump and possible other problems, but who is to say for sure. Bought the fuel at a BP, thought that the major brands would be the safest, guess that I thought wrong.
Major brands typically are. There was an incident at one of our local stations a few years back where they accidentally filled up the regular unleaded tank with diesel...needless to say there were quite a few odd vehicle breakdowns that week....they had to pump all the fuel out of the storage tanks and refill with the proper fuel plus pay for repairs on all the vehicles that were rendered useless from that mix-up.
I'm late to the game watching this after just having finished installing one of the fuel filter relocation kits. It shouldn't have to be aftermarket but it is completely worth it.
Add the second air filter. Kubota dose not put it on the bx but can just add it anytime. Stens 100-5412508303-5 Inner Kohler Air Filter is the one I use on my bx. Just extra help in very dirty environments.
I share your grief about the 2 fuel filters, maybe we can replace the rear filter with a bypass and just change the engine filter twice as often? Or gang the two filters in the engine compartment? Getting too old to crawl under the bx at -25.
@@ritterjon Sure enough, although his tractor is a BX1850 so is ever so slightly different than yours, but rear fuel filter is still pretty miserable. Oh, and also he has and recommends the inner air filter such as mentioned by other commenters.
Kubota does have filters on there engines, on my b1700 its right on the engine and on my ZD326 its also right on the engine. The newer mini compact tractors they cut corners to save on cost factor that's why yours are in line filters.
The strap wrench is horrible. I had to buy a filter wrench last weekend and the band style was too small so I bought the strap. Wound up having to jam a screwdriver thru the filter 🤬
I think I would switch to the full synthetic T6 up where you are 15-40 is kind of thick for 20 below! Full Synthetic 5/40 is better, especially when I think Kubota recommends 10/30.
Actually Kubota has 15/40 listed as an appropriate oil to use in our winter temps. I didn't have any issues last winter with it and would always plug in the block heater before starting so that helps a lot. Keep on tractoring!
If I would've known about the two filters and no water separator on my BX2670, I never would've bought the tractor. It's something I took for granted before purchasing it. That is a very poor design for a diesel tractor.
I hate those filters also. I change the first one in frame every other year (150hrs) and the one by the engine every 4 years, so not such a big deal. In past years when I ran it more and had fuel problems it was a bigger deal for me. I use premium fuel from a good supplier and have less problems now.
That's pretty much what I do, it's such a pain that I didn't want to deal with it earlier because I knew it be fine until at least 200 hours. Hope they improve this in the next update. Keep on tractoring!
That fuel filter looks easier to change than the fuel filter in my 87 Ranger that's in the frame rail between the exhaust and engine block....#1 stupid place for a fuel filter, next to the exhaust pipe off the header, #2 there may be room for a kindergarten age child to fit their hands in there, but not an adult...its purely by feel and pliers that I got that stupid filter out of there and of course its a damn Ford thing with plastic quick connect fittings rather than rubber hose and a couple clamps that would make it a simple easy change but trying to fuss with getting the filter in there holding those quick connect fittings together while trying to fish quick connect clips through the fittings is a joke in itself. I think I'll go with an aftermarket fuel filter kit on my BX when I get it though, there's no need for 2 fuel filters of that type, I'll leave the one at the engine but the one in the frame is going bye bye for sure.
I’m guessing you are not far from me. I’m in Stillwater Minnesota. Not that you need to tell what town you are in. I also have a TH-cam channel but very amateur.
Take off that guard. I took mine off. I don't need that skid plate guard, all I do with mine is cut grass around house and don't do any forestry stuff where I would have sticks poking from the bottom . I guess my question is this. Why would you want to pinch off your fuel lines. I wait till the tank is almost empty and just let the remaining fuel run out into a container. This way it will remove any trash in the tank into the container and let the line from the fuel pump empty also which can remove any trash in the line.
Do your self a favor - pickup a DONALDSON FUEL/WATER SEPARATOR P553203 and a Baldwin FB1311 Fuel Filter Base and do away with both of those little toy things. They are junk. One filter should/would last you a lifetime on that little engine. Also pickup a Silicone Pad Diesel Fuel Filter Heater Wrap. They come in 120v - house outlet or 12v - tractor battery powered. That fuel filter will filter much better (3 microns @ 99%) than any stock KUBOTA filter. Mount it any place you like.
You sure to wonder! These engineers only see a few parts of the piece they are designing and don’t realize how other components nearby just don’t work well together. It’s frustrating! Keep on tractoring!
They saved like $20 per tractor by using those cheap throw away fuel filters LOL. I'd think adding a regular cartridge type fuel filter somewhere on the tractor would be a huge plus and get rid of those cheap throw away filters.
My B7800 has a front mounted one at the bottom of the frame rail where there is a 100% chance it will get hit with a sapling and busted. So BX is not the only problem child.
Wow, the engineers that come up with these designs cannot possibly be tractor owners. It’s just crazy what they think of sometimes. Keep on tractoring!
th-cam.com/video/rkYoT5YOq8U/w-d-xo.html He's figured this out. Don't know if it's the same - apples to apples - but this process/mod is what you're looking for.
@@ritterjon On TH-cam, do a search for "Kubota BX fuel filter mod". Apparently, this is a common problem. There's another guy who made a cover for his. He made it but it looks like it was made by Kubota. Others also go into a process for replacing that fuel filter, but the first one I sent you the link for seems to be the best one so far. Btw, I don't have a tractor. Don't really have the need for one. But, you have cool family, great energy and entertaining channel. Please, keep doing what you're doing.

I agree, why Kubota sticks with this design is beyond me. It needs fixing!

Good morning Jon and family. From Alberta.
Good Morning! Hope you have a great day!

Thanks
Oh wow, only after 25 hours. That seems pretty weird. Wonder what would have caused that.
Keep on tractoring!
I’d use Fluid Film on the latches, it probably the best thing out there.
I agree 100% I can't believe there isn't a better design. Probably they want you to bring it to a service facility
That’s how they get ya! 😳
Keep on tractoring!
Go figure. :-)
Please Replace the Air Filter and Don’t Blow it Out with Air. “Your Engine will Love ❤️ You”. 😬 👍
1025r I'd has a fuel filter under the floorboard on the left side beside the water separator by the motor
I didn’t realize that. I wonder how difficult it is to change.
Keep on tractoring!
Its real easy. Ive already done it beofre on my 1025r.
I was wondering if you had to replace the tie-rod boots yet on your tractor and would that be covered under warranty .
@@ritterjon After having to change the back fuel filter in the winter I purchased the full filter relocation kit from Botaproducts. Worth every penny!
we follow the routine service and still mark the dates on the filter's when we change them on the tractor's, because we don't always have time to check the routine service when we are working and that is why we put the dates on the filter's
A RITTER BIT WILL DO its before the pump cause if any junk is in the fuel it will damage the pump cause of the tight tolerances in the pump.
I did the 200 hour at 170. When you buy a 9 year old used tractor with only 140 hours, it is for sure time to change the fluids. To get it back on schedule I will just push everything except the engine oil change. I did however go ahead and change the hystat oil and front axle oil as well.
Always a good idea to change all fluids at least once every 10 years no matter how many hours are on it.
Keep on tractoring!

Getting ready to do 50 hrs service - might leave the fuel filters a tad longer after watching this - oil and hydrolic fluid don’t seem too bad! Thanks for heads up..
Your fuel filters don’t really don’t need to be changed until 400 hours. I did it at 200 for peace of mind. You’re good for awhile

I have yet to change mine for that reason. I think I will eventually get the relocation kit
I would think you might be overdue. Better get that done soon.
Keep on tractoring!
Unfortunately deere has the exact same inline filter like the kubota underneath too tim has shown changing it before it looks like it's a pain also. They are just trying to protect the fuel pump I wish they'd find a way to relocate it and put a fuel water separator on like the deeres do
Was that an after market filter Tim had? I thought it was factory. Opps, well regardless it needs to be improved.
Keep on tractoring!
@@ritterjon yup its factory they are trying to do the same thing kubota is and protect the fuel filter down there
That other unit on Tim's JD is a water collector. Not really a filter. Found this as well :"he first filter protects this electric pump, the 2nd protects the engines fuel injectors if that pump happens to fall appart"
Why does the engine need two fuel filters? I'm assuming that the filters are on the same line.
The one underneath protects the fuel pump the one on the engine catches anything the first filter misses
They want to have one before the pump for some reason. I think they could eliminate it.
Keep on tractoring!
Most diesels have at least 2 filters. The first one would help with water..... sort of..... Wouldn't hurt to change the first one a bit more often (at least if you see it getting "brown")
I am sure it does the job Kubota wants it to do, but totally agree they need to change the design. This is what you find in $2,000 ride on lawn mowers.....but even my mower has one that's easy to get to.
If I bought one of these (will likely buy a B-series/2025R/Mahindra Max size.... I actually like them all but leaning toward a Kioti CX2510)
At the end of the day buy the machine you like that will do the job you need - they are all good machines and each one will have things that seem like a stupid design, or cheap. No different with pickup trucks, cars or motorcycles.. (39 years as a mechanic)
I wonder if Kubota will listen to your suggestion on the Gas filter, I hope they do 🤷🏼♂️
I’ve got my doubts. They’ve had the same design for 20 years. We’ll see I guess.
Keep on tractoring!
How's she goin'? Nice service video!!! I'm guessing you don't like the 2 fuel filters!!! LOL Don't blame ya!!1 Take care!!
Nice job!👍
I have a 50 hour coming up, thanks for making me dread that day :)
You really don't need to change the fuel filter until 200 or 400 hours. I changed mine at 200 because I didn't want to deal with it during the winter in my unheated garage.
Keep on tractoring!
Before I watch, what a pain to change them! No inline cut off!
The owners manual and the workshop manual both don’t call for fuel filter changes until the 400 hour mark.
That's true, I guess I assumed it was every 100 hours or so. Oh well, my filter underneath was pretty dirty partly because I unknowingly ran it without a fuel cap while clearing brush so better to be safe than sorry.
Keep on tractoring!
A RITTER BIT WILL DO in that case I completely agree with your choice.
No manufacturer in the world recommends priming your oil filter. Other wise, nice video.
I got some bad fuel for my 2009 BX25 a few years back. I appreciate the dual fuel filters, might have saved my fuel pump and possible other problems, but who is to say for sure. Bought the fuel at a BP, thought that the major brands would be the safest, guess that I thought wrong.
It’s nice there is a filter before the fuel
pump but the design configuration could use a little work.
Keep on tractoring!
Like the video Jon .
My L3301 has the fuel filter in a very easy spot. Didn’t realize how lucky I am.
I'm late to the game watching this after just having finished installing one of the fuel filter relocation kits. It shouldn't have to be aftermarket but it is completely worth it.
Manufacturers intentionally do this to keep Dealer Repair Shops Busy with Maintenance Work.👎
Add the second air filter. Kubota dose not put it on the bx but can just add it anytime. Stens 100-5412508303-5 Inner Kohler Air Filter is the one I use on my bx. Just extra help in very dirty environments.
I feel your pain bud. I work on big rigs. And im constantly gripping about where ceratin filters are located. These designers are idiots.
I share your grief about the 2 fuel filters, maybe we can replace the rear filter with a bypass and just change the engine filter twice as often? Or gang the two filters in the engine compartment? Getting too old to crawl under the bx at -25.
One is before the fuel pump, one is after...
Did you follow Bota Bob on this very subject?
I did not, did he do a similar video. I'll have to check out his channel.
Keep on tractoring!

I hated to change the fuel filters on my old BX. Plus no shut off valve to the one underneath. Grrrrrr

The strap wrench is horrible. I had to buy a filter wrench last weekend and the band style was too small so I bought the strap. Wound up having to jam a screwdriver thru the filter 🤬
Good to know, thanks!

Even better than in-line fuel filters and filters inside the water separator is a spin-on fuel filter. Easy Peezy.
Yes, that type of fuel filter is terrific! Easy and simple.
Keep on tractoring!
Imagine changing that fuel filter under the tractor if you installed the full under-belly skid plate.
If I were you I would put a pipe where the first filter is and put the two filters one after the other cheap fix done
Don’t forget to top off the transaxle fluid.
I topped it off. Doesn’t need changing until 400 hours.
I'm near the St. Cloud area. Hope all is well in Stillwater!

Shouldn't you always warm the engine before change the oil? That way any dirt or debris gets suspended in the oil and flushed out.
Yes you should and I did, I just didn't show that.
Keep on tractoring!
Changimg the fuel.filters now on a zd 326 commercial. I will never own another kubota
Jon great next time I am going to have the dealer put a filter on some say the B series will work
God Bless

and re the fuel filter, Look inside it, Its the Mirror of whats in your tank.
Engineers that mount oil filters horizontally should be castrated. Buy some fuel line hose and reroute that lower filter to a more accessible area.
You Wonder some times of the Grade Level of those people 🤪 that Design things how they do. 👎
You sure to wonder! These engineers only see a few parts of the piece they are designing and don’t realize how other components nearby just don’t work well together. It’s frustrating!
