    I am a soft classic and ONE time I wore scrubs to work that were full of animated pictures of tinkerbell. Everybody else wears cartoon scrubs many times a week, but the ONE time I wore mine I got asked if it was Halloween. Now I finally get why.

    THIS is why I've always hated shopping and have lived in tshirts and jeans forever! As a soft classic, almost all women's clothes I find is too cute and detailed than I like or look good in. Thanks for the video!

    I just wanna say that you can be a flamboyant gamine and still be a minimalist, I just add some colour to my usually black, grey,white or camel outfits and keep the lines geometric and respect the lines, you don't have to wear polka dots and a lot of different patterns to look good! Think of Audrey Hepburn!

    You know what i rhink about? Audrey Hepburn, flamboyant gamine, in "brealfast at Tyffany's" with the small black dress that supposed to be boring but all added detail in jewelery, big hair and strong makeup made it gorgeous and elegant when piling it up on a classic lady would just look like a parody.

    It took me a while to accept that I am a dramatic classic. I always struggled with the being fun department. Everyone would tell me that I looked so nice in the more classic stuff but I wanted to be more fun, interesting and care free. I used to take it too far though. That left me with a closet filled with items that looked like costumes that I couldn't mix and match at all.
    Once I started really accessing my body type and lost the extra weight, I could see my body lines. Dramatic classic lines are just so easy for me to dress up and down. I really love how you showed ways for a dramatic classic to punch up an outfit without looking crazy. You are right when you say that one must try on those styles a see what they look like on ones own body. For years I use to love the idea of bohemian as in flamboyant natural and soft natural but they looked bag lady/dirty hippy on me. I also thought the vavavoom soft dramatic and theatrical romantic type looks would make me look sexy while being sophisticated. Nope, I wound up look like a little girl playing dress up or princess.
    It surprised the heck out of me that I am able to blend both my desire to look polished with a cool edge once I started actually wearing dramatic classic lines. The general recommendations for an inverted triangle (because of my broad shoulders) doesn't make me look my best. Following my bodylines make me look slim and curvy. Who would ever think that I could look curvy. Soft classic was a little too matronly and sweet for me, but I knew I needed a soft element. Funnily enough, it turns out my coloring is soft and muted. I sometimes find it hard to acquire clothing that has a dramatic classic cut but in soft muted colors.

      Same here, I was always in love with the type of clothes that are for gamines and romantics and I am still. I love all those details, embellisments, ruffles, laces, the bohemian or the femme fatale-dramatic kind of looks. So I find it difficult to accept being a dramatic classic, although I can see on myself that it sure does look more elegant on me than the gamine clothes.
      Also same with the inverted triangle shape.
      Anyway, I still don't know how to mix the clothes I like with my own line, for now I find it almost impossible. I would love to wear those type of clothes (the ones I mentioned at the beginning) but paired with my line it would look over the top or ridiculous. :(

    This is such a well and thoughtfully done video. I think the "classics being boring" stereotype was really perpetuated with some of the videos that Carole Jackson and others put out in the late 80's. They seemed to glamorize the dramatics, the gamines were fun and childlike, the romantics were pudgy and wore a lot of lace, and then everyone else was chopped liver. lol. Well, I take that back. The naturals were reaaaalllyy into sports. I specifically remember one of the actresses who was identified as classic for the video ask the presenter "Well, what if I like to wear a more romantic line from time to time, would that be alright?" The presenter responded with something to the effect of that she would look ridiculous and too overdone if she went outside her lines and to sort of get over it. I think it's only recently that we've been starting to figure out that the box that each of the categories we fall into really isn't so tiny and conforming, and there is actually a lot of room to play around within each set of recs.
    On a side note, I'm actually a little confused now how to tell the difference between an SG and an FG. It seems like SG's have more square/rounded faces and FG's have oval/pointed faces with high cheekbones? I suppose too that FG's look a bit more long in the arms and legs from the D influence, and SG's are more compact from the R influence. I sort of gave up trying to figure out which one I fall into more, because I can do some from both, and have ended up just sticking to straight G. *sigh*

    • @ConnieWobbles
      @ConnieWobbles 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I've also struggled with this issue, which has been made worse by being overweight. I ruled out fg for myself because I thought they had to be taller, with pointy faces. But then I realised I always naturally gravitate to fg style, more Kelly Osbourne ish in what I like. and sg don't seem to have much in the way of muscle structure. I'm 5'2 but don't have tiny Ectomorph bones. I'm small to medium. I'm not quite as mesomorph as Pink, but I'm definitely mesomorph with a fair bit of naturally occurring muscle tone. Pretty sure most sg are more delicate, even though I came.out as sg on the quiz. I can see the lines of my body clearly, but I find it difficult to be objective about my face shape nowadays. Also, I hate fussy patterns. I don't mind other small details like earrings, but patterns feel very uncomfortable for me. I feel messy in patterns, and I hate all the child like Gamine styles. It's can be confusing if you're not comfortable in your type, but don't fit the other types either. Also, I read that fg shouldn't wear warm autumn colours, which I can kind of see, but it doesn't help the warm autumns who prefer a more edgy look.SG just feels a bit twee for me sometimes.

    • @ellenchomp3552
      @ellenchomp3552 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm also very confused about the very existence of a non-soft or non-flamboyant gamine! I have all the soft childlike gamine body lines and a severe face, but I feel like the huge amounts of detail of FG are always too much even though I love to dress like a crazy person, and SG styles make me look like I'm playing dressup. I seem to look my best in fairly streamlined outfits in that very classic gamine silhouette of short cigarette pants, big shirt and fun accessories, but that seems nonexistent in most in-depth analyses. It's also nigh-impossible to google. Surely a short, starfish-shaped person with tiny hands, no chest and a boyish demeanor can't be a classic or dramatic?

    • @TheeScarletRose
      @TheeScarletRose 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@ellenchomp3552 I think some of the issue too is that the "detail" we are seeing in stores either caters toward FN's and is too big or DC's and is almost there-maybe for an FG, but not quite. It's still too big and harsh. We need small geometrics. It's very hard to find gamine detail these days, unless you look in the kid's sections. There are also very few brands that cater to us, although Kohl's has a new line with Popsugar that is very gamine. Detail also has to be done right, with the colors just right, and in 2018 and at 32 years old, I'm not going to dress like a glorified Kimmy Gibbler from Full House. There's definitely a stopping point, even with the Gamines.

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      As a gamine/soft gamine myself I also struggle with the detailing always being too large in stores. So annoying! Sometimes I'll go for something like this and it's not exactly a pattern, but the lace creates it with the skin, and has smaller designs:
      cdn-img.prettylittlething.com/6/7/e/a/67eadf5cd4a76ec6ce5d3fccc3aed872b6327144_CLT8388_1.JPG?imwidth=400
      So funny what you said about the stereotypes perpetuated about different types! I think there's some 'truth' to them because if you're to advise a classic to go buy something, you can tell them 'go get something super plain and minimal' and it will look great. But it won't look plain and minimal on them!!

    • @ConnieWobbles
      @ConnieWobbles 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's a lovely dress, and a great example of minimal detailing etc. My only criticism of that look is that it's only suitable if you're very slim, and young and happy to show so much flesh. I'm not saying you have to be young to be able to wear a dress like that, but it's definitely more suited for someone very slim and toned, which isn't everyone. I realise your reply wasn't for me, but I just thought I'd throw my tuppence worth into the mix as a lot of gamine styles are only suited to skinny types who can wear such a fitted/short look. Just my personal axe to grind with Gamine fashion lol, not a dig at you. Still love your videos and think you show great examples, including this one! I just wish there were more examples of Gamine clothing for the average body. But I realise that's a whole other topic.

    This is my favorite of all of your videos. I was afraid to admit that my body was dramatic classic because I thought any "drama" made me look masculine and because my face has gentle curves rather than the sharpness that DC ladies have (more yin like theatrical romantic), but this made me realize that I looked "masculine" when I tried to wear super cutsy clothing because those lines are not right for my body, but I look adorable when the lines are right! That video - again - was amazing. I just yesterday realized what detail can really be. I used to think, I always need ruffles, frills, bows and lace detail to look good and to be honest, I got sick of it. Yesterday I was looking up some fashion pictures and found clothes that were designed with a lot of color blocking, gathers, cuffs, prints etc. and then it clicked for me "hey, that's detail too!", and I felt stupid for not realizing that before. I like wearing ruffles and stuff once in a while but it's not really my prefered style. There are many topics I'm interested in and body typing might be one of those that are the most difficult to fully understand. But that makes it even more interesting to me.

    • @merriamstyle
      @merriamstyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes exactly! We often don't think of it that way. We think of details as a ton of buttons sewn all over the garment or frills. But it can really be as simple as contrasting necklines, patterns, etc. It doesn't have to be frills, but it could be!

What a difference, I look so much better. That relaxed look really confirmed I was right. An interesting fact is that I am only 5’ 2” but I had a growth issue when I was a child (I could had meant to be taller) this made very confusing to identify my body type (I thought I was TR) but when I focused on my bone structure and the lines that made me look more sophisticated, it was very clear I was a soft natural.

      Same. I am a TR and because I'm plus sized, I always thought I need to wear loose clothes to hide my tummy and high neck tops to cover my large breast. Ivuf Liff Only slightly oversized. I don’t find that critical to emphasize the waist if I am emphasizing my legs for example so, if using flowy pants, I would use a jacket or top that has a little more waist definition. I went to forever 21 and spend a few hours trying stuff and that’s how I figured out how to work the natural lines.

    Fantastic video again Merriam! I’m a flamboyant gamine and your videos have helped me really understand and appreciate my body type. I think that a lot of people have a hard time grasping FG and what Kibbe meant when he wrote about it. You hit the nail right on the head!
    Would you consider making a video about Audrey Hepburn’s FG style? I am drawn to classic, minimalist fashion, and she struck a balance between FG essence and more timeless clothing. I have seen some pictures of her wearing prints and lots of detail, but I’ve seen more pictures of her wearing solid neutrals, such as white poplin blouses and black trousers. Her evening wear seemed to include more classic necklines, if I’m not wrong. However, she wears some FG details, such as her asymmetrical choppy bangs. Instead of looking “fun” and “out-there”, her bangs just look polished and normal on her. It would be an interesting topic for a video, and I would love your insight on it!

    Thank you so much for this video. After many weeks of constant study, last weekend I took the Kibbe test again with the help of my mother and brothers and I got typed as a Dramatic Classic. And hells it felt depressing! The more I searched about how to dress as a Dramatic Classic the worse I felt because I don't relate at all with the style in general. Now, after watching this video I feel as if I understand a little bit more of what a Dramatic Classic is beyond the stereotype, and even found some information that does ring with parts of my personality. I have to admit I'm still having a hard time digesting it, but I believe I have a better direction now. @conversegirl3074 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Yup. I can stand next to my natural friend or flamboyant gamine friend in fitted athletic wear and look remarkably more sexual.
      Personally I'm somewhat grunge, so flannels and Doc Marten boots help take the sexual edge off because they're very down-to-earth. My best look is a lacy camisole under an open plaid shirt. Admittedly I look weird if I try to totally fight the curves (boxy and bloated) but if I layer simple things over something fitted it looks good, but not *too* sexy.
      I don't know what your style is, but maybe there's the equivalent type of shirt that you could find in your aesthetic?
      I'm hopeful for suggestions too, TR looks so "bedroom" or "woman of the night" and I dislike a lot of the Pinterest stuff around.

      if I look at photos of a famous TR like Vivien Leigh, her beauty isn't dimmed when she wears higher necklines, so long as she keeps those TR qualities of detail and ornateness - www.pinterest.com.au/pin/352617845809354875/

    Very interesting! I’ve pretty much narrowed down I’m a dramatic Classic... and your right! I really thought Classic was boring. I sternly avoided it because I’m short with thinness, roundness & a square jaw like Sophia Loren. Too small for Womens too big for some Jrs. with styles in my closet that were both classic & trend. I’d leave my house feeling great but could see friends analyzing my funky style like something was off lol. In pictures I’d see something “off” but could not figure it out until I realized I AM a Classic!! This video explains my problem! I’m a fun personality but was dressing “too gamine” or “too soft natural. (I already knew dressing dramatic was like putting on a sack lol) I absolutely love your insight and in-depth angles of thought creatively helping us look at our selves and not everybody else. Yes we have to compare to the other types but I feel so individualized now! I’ve removed 2/3 of clothing from my closet and express my funk in shoes or jewelry. Hey people! Your awesome videos helped me so much! Thank you! I am a soft classic and when I discovered my Kibbe type it explained a lot in my wardrobe and why some things that seemed good idea while on a hanger didn’t work on me.

    Still, I think that being classic is a bit boring. Not because you *look* boring, but because your type leaves you *so little* wiggle room. No place for experiments with accessories, nothing cute, nothing perky, nothing edgy - everything looks too much on you.
    You cannot have fun shopping and putting together your look - you just have to walk straight line. One step right - and you are frumpy, one step left - and you are gaudy. You have to stick to plain dresses and minimal jewelry (which *is* boring in the process, however elegant your reflection in the mirror is).
    The perk of the soft classic is that you look regal even wrapped up in a sheet. The downside - that’s about all you can wear to look your best. Unless you are a first lady or belong to a royal family that is not a very exciting type to be.

If I add a simple print, I look "fun."

    Your videos are like factual storytelling! I know the Kibbe system is about clothing and lines but do you think there is any correlation or crossover between Kibbe body type and interior design style? Of course clothes are worn and a room is lived in but would Gamines be able to decorate with more "fun and interesting" objects, patterns and textures and Dramatics be more suited to living in large, hi-tech, architectural structures with geometric shapes etc. or is that way too much of a jump from the Kibbe system!? I can imagine Jennifer Aniston living in a cool beachouse with wood panelling and linen fabrics that compliment her laid-back Natural style.

    I think it's difficult to adapt lines to differents styles. I'm a SG and I have a hard time finding the right clothes for work (lawfirm) and for being a bit more sexy, I always look childlike in a way which is not helping when we wanna be taken seriously in the dating and the work departments. When going to a store the "office" clothes are more fitted for classics and dramatics and the night/"sexy" clothes more for R and TR. It really makes it hard when we don't know how to arrange outfits correctly. And reading others comments I get that each type have problems with adapting the theory in real life outfits for everyday occasions, could you do a serie about that? or maybe an article/section on your site explaining how each type can adapt each style using their lines with tips like playing with a funnier/less classic blazer for gamines for work (I guess it can work) etc to give us ideas ? I really enjoy your work on the differences between classic vs. gamine, as a soft classic. I think your analogy at the end of the video is very relevant. It made me think further about it and I'd like to know your opinion. It feels to me like gamines look harmonious when there's a contrasted alternance between yin and yang (or the other way around) from head to toe, while classics need a mixture of both energies from head to toe. To me, the look of Nina Dobrev with the red t-shirt and black skirt seems a bit off. Even if her neck line is rounded(yin), her hair is edgy at that same place (yang), plus her sharp shoulders (yang) and the brutal contrasting colors of her hair,top and skirt(yang). A black top would have looked better, as well as the combination of a red skirt and a blunt bob. I truly benefit from your knowledge, though, so thank you!

I hope this doesn’t sound toxic (I’m sure I’ll get slammed for this 😂) but I myself am a DC and I’ve always been VERY conscious about my weight. Why? Well because as a very thin DC can get away with flamboyant gamine styles. Don’t believe me? Look at Audrey Hepburn. I don’t care what kibbe says… that woman is a very underweight DC. Sooooo the unfortunate toxic truth is that thinner the DC the more young, playful, sexy, and fun styles are available to her.

    I think mixing the concept of essence with structure is what creates confusion.
    I've seen multiple people with different essences or, maybe a one separate feature that helps them to pull off some elements that doesn't match their stereotypical type description .
    Of course each type shares a similar structure but, they also have individual differences that makes them who they are.
