    Love the river barge concept. Am planning such a scene on my own near-future layout as there is so much visual and operational interest in a justifiably small space. Especially a low or half tide scene in the mouth of a river. I’m thinking seriously of doing part of my layout to Freemo modular standards as there is a strong Freemo American Modellers group here in New Zealand. I look forward to learning clever techniques from your videos - if you choose that future of course!

      The Barge Slip is tempting. The only problem is making it work in the allotted space. The foot-print I have is rather restrictive once things get scaled out, even when compressed. It might hurt it more than I expect. I wouldn't be able to model the barge (no room). Then the curve for the lead would be ridiculous looking. It has to work visually other wise no-go. Prototype modelling is a whole new ball game when it comes to space as you well know. I'll build out the frames and try some dry runs first.

      @@boomerdiorama - electronics is my forte - so thinking about adding realism with load cells under the barge, and simulating a dangerous list if the barge is not loaded or unloaded correctly. Sounds cheesy when described, but I believe I can keep it ‘realism focussed’ - like the dimension sound has added to the hobby.

      @@boomerdiorama Would it help to reverse the direction? If you made the barge removable (after all the prototype is removable!) and put it outside the shadow box in front of the window? Being removable you could move it away from the window when not operating, and it could double as a removable fiddle yard. It would require a curved lead to the barge, but might give you a few more feet to play with.

    I am a new subscriber to your channel and have not viewed many of your past videos so forgive me if I may have missed key tenants associated with your views and interests in modeling. After listening to this post (and a few other posts) and in viewing Glover Road it is clear to me that you are an exceptional modeler with a keen eye for texture, color, weathering, perspectives and many other forms of artistic creativity. You mention that we are all on this continual journey as we learn, expand our perspectives and adapt to new interests. I say, archive Glover Road and start anew. As a artist you have to ( in the end ) go with what inspires you not by what we say. That being said, I'll throw in my 2cents. You seem to need to scratch build , to express the talent in you , go with that. Then there's this, God gave you that talent ask Him what He would like you to do. Weather you know it or not your doing His work already by teaching us to slow down , don't over plan , don't stress yourself.

    A beautiful build with so many opportunities for photography in a limited space! What I've liked about this project is how common the elements are for many layouts. For that reason, unlike many of comments, I'd prefer seeing you build the engine terminal. The barge terminal would be unique and interesting, but the theme is very specific to limited geographic areas and not something many modelers will actually build. Engine shops exist in every part of the country and a thing common on most railroads. Of course, it's not not what appeals to any of us, but what most inspires and motivates you.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't have wrote that any better myself Gerry. I thought about the engine shed. I have hoards of research on the particular subject, therefore it is not out of the question for an additional module down the road because it is central to the theme of SRY Rail Link in which I model. Never-the-less, phase two will be the "Barge Slip" (River Drive). Thank You for sharing your thoughts and opinions as well because at the end of the day, it is more about other features as well, not just the Barge Slip. I will describe my thoughts about it very soon. Stay tuned! Cheers ~ Boomer.

    Both are great concepts to build.. the barge would present new challenges for sure... and the engine shops would give you a great excuse to have a lot of locomotives on the layout at the same time since it's expected to see that, if you're into collecting/mod'ing them and having them on display. Looking forward to seeing what avenue you go down.
    On a related note, tonight I disassembled the rolling benchwork for my older, "finished" HO layout where I test all my locos, and shelved the layout out of the way. I kept running trains instead of working on the new layout, so now I have a new focus to get the new one operational to run trains again lol! I was thinking a lot about what you were talking about with burn out, and this step takes me a little further away from it in a sense, and frees up my mind from 2 layouts and onto only one.
    Cheers

      Thank You Joey. I would love to build the Barge Slip. Only problem is space to do it justice. Prototypically, ten feet would only cover the Slip and a small part of the approach in HO Scale. I can handle it but it is too ambitious for the limited footprint allotted. It's fun to plan it though. I have a few good options on the back burner. Cheers.

    Not too long ago, I was considering St Ignace, Michigan for a layout focusing on the Chief Wawatam car ferry and Soo Line. But, like many layout ideas that have surfaced, I keep finding that if I never saw it operating in real life I have a hard time moving the idea forward. Running into the same problem with the current layout as it just doesn’t have enough prototype in the 10 ft switching track plan and now I’m stalled out not wanting to commit to ballasting it. Glover Road is such a fantastic layout. End to end it is a real work of modeling art. I'm typically not interested in seaports, river ports, or barges, but the operation does have the potential to be interesting. I guess I have a problem with a 2-3 track, 6 cars per track barge. That thing will be large. Then you have the lead-in track with turnouts to consider. I am sure you have thought about all of this and have a better vision than what I am thinking. I guess I'd need to see it on paper (or computer screen) to see how it would look and operate. That said, I think this would be more interesting than an engine facility type layout. Is there a third option? No matter what direction you go, you will have my complete and undivided attention. Stay safe. Cheers - Larry.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good analysis Larry. With the Barge Slip scene I would only capture the "spirit" of the prototype in a heavily compressed footprint. Adherence to the prototype goes out the window once artistic license is let loose. It would only resemble the prototype in freelance form much in the same way as Glover Road. Barge vs engine shop.... In addition to space and layout considerations, the barge layout would focus on cars and operations more than locomotives, while the engine shop would focus on locomotives with trains passing by. Either would be cool, and there's no wrong choice: whichever one you choose, once it's done you can always do the other as your next project!

    I like this layout as it is very imaginative, it can also be incorporated into future modular layouts, I have find that deconstruction of a build or a track spur can add to the excitement of this and other layouts. 9' by 12' tough shed would be Ideal, my garage is about that dimension [my garage is 10' by 15']. I model in On30 and since I am living in a room devote to music and junk, I am think mit is time to take the ;pnf wall and put is a modular layout as time passes.......... The inspiration I got from this series is that if I want to build a large layout I can do it 8 or 10 feet at a time, highly detail it and not get burned out in the process. Eventually it would all come together but it might take more time.

    You have done a fantastic job on the module. As a builder type, would you really get much value from the module if you stored it? It seems like you might not look at it much since you will be focused on your next project. Maybe raise some cash and give others enjoyment by selling it?
    Both new concepts sound interesting. The barge seems like too much compression in the space available. Loco shop would seem to fit better. Maybe there is a third viable option you haven't considered yet (i.e. centered around one medium or large industry).

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You raise good points Michael. I would rather not sell the Glover Road project. It packs up and moves nicely. It's a keeper. I designed it "wild" with this in mind. It's like a mini movie set that tears down and sets up well. The next one won't be as friendly this way. I agree, the Barge Slip would require far too much compression in HO scale for the allotted space. I am leaning quite strongly in the direction of the locomotive shops with the associated yard lead for expansion onto the next wing (module), which I will include as well in the initial first phase. Thank You again for your advice. It is sound and I appreciate it. Cheers ~ Boomer.

    I won't know what channel I'm watching if there isn't a Dairy Queen and a pink factory building. 🤔
    Can you do 24" deep? I can see the possibilities there in your idea. And that'd give you a reason to pull the upper out 26" to get that front lighting you wanted.
    If you want to curve around across the windows,why not? You can always create raisable backdrop sections to keep the light & view when you're not running.
    So many opportunities. What's the hold up?!🙂

    If and when my health improves, my future lndustrail layout theme is I have a brewery, inbound grains, glass, cardboard, small steel fabrication shop, a railroad freight car repair facility, a four to five door warehouse for miscellaneous loads, then two house tracks set up with various types of equiipment to unload customer's cars, then we'll deliver their materials to their work site. I have an area where they will be loading hoppers full of salt and tank cars full of magnesium chloride for dust control (summer) and ice removal in the (winter) season.
    So I've been taking mental, physical notes, and pgotographs on how the alkali affects the bottoms of buildings and utility poles, mine will be alot lighter, almost bleached, then my ground cover will start with dried out alkaline mud glued down with real magnesium chloride, ballast will be loose and not a priority using limestone fines the same way that you had done on your layout. Driving surfaces will be a mixture of used asphalt and more limestone fines. You won't see any personal vehicles because they leave them outside of the gates. Most workers will be in carpools or a bus. That's what I invision it to be.

      Boomer, I've bought four four axle locomomotives, all GE locomomotives, you'd think atleast one of the four will be running B20-9C, ( a B23-7 with a 2,000 hp CAT engine). B23-7, Super 7 23B and a U18B. The first three will be in their predecessor's owner, the 801 will be painted in haze grey, with 8 - 0 - 1 large enough to start on the top of it's hood going down to the walkway like the ones seen on USN equiipment. The B23-7 is a former NS, it will have various shades of black on the unit, the Super 7 will be painted up in Weyerheuaser yellow and black. I'm planning having a 9 foot 3.5% grade before it levels off to a run around track serving the brewery and the metal fabrication shop. A nearby shortline has a B36-7 in it's roster along with two rebuilt GP9s.

      I feel for you bro! I have built many N scale layouts in my small space of 8'x8' "L" shaped area and ran them for the last 15 years. I want to change to HO scale however. I model 1920s steam, so in N scale my options are limited for good locomotives. I run trains for operations and that is why I went to N scale in the first place. I know I can do operations in HO in my small area too. I saw a video of few months ago given by Bill Neale on one of the NMRA regional websites where he showed a track plan with inter city switching; I might have to use that as a starting point for a design of an HO scale layout in limited space.
      Not to mention that maintenance would be a lot easier in HO scale as you already know!@@boomerdiorama

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-nx8tk1pp5o HO is the ultimate scale in my opinion and experience. The problem with N is switching. The locomotives are too light for good conductivity.
