    Your layout is an inspiration for me and your words of wisdom have completely changed my approach to the hobby. I've not had a railroad in 25 years but felt motivated to get back into the hobby. I've spent the last month designing the layout and I really enjoy that aspect of the hobby but I realized it would be many months before I could even run a train. But after watching your videos I've decided to just build a small part of the layout and enjoy all the facets of the hobby and then decide if I want to move on and build the entire railroad. Building the smaller switching layout was going to take some time so I bought some unitrack and set up a small switching layout on my desk. I bought a locomotive, a couple box cars and Digitrax and have been having a blast just moving cars around. The equipment is so much better now with sound and realistic precise movement that switching cars around is actually fun. I look forward to you new videos I'm always learning something new.

    As the poet Paul Valéry has been quoted: “A work is never completed, but merely abandoned.” - It seems a layout is never completed, more details or changes can always be added, right up until the point it is sold off, given away, donated, or tossed in the dumpster to make room for the next layout. Thanks for the journey (so far) along the Glover Road. Looking forward to more videos, more operations, and more model railroad philosophy. Keep 'em coming and thanks! Paul

    Thanks for sharing your work. There’s not many ‘switching layouts’ on here, at least I haven’t run across them. But during college I had a 10’ x 18” layout that, like you say, allowed for an escape from life’s stresses. Just track, cork roadbed, and popsicle stick levers and thread for remote switching kept me busy moving cargo for Norfolk Southern 😎. Some fun dorm-life memories right there. Thanks for taking me back (the rolling stock and motive power are safely stored, so she will live again!).

      @@boomerdiorama What's the minimum amount of new equipment I'd need to get to convert my DC layout to the same type of controls you have? Obviously, a new DCC loco, (can you recommend a particular brand?) but what are all the other components needed to get my switching layout AND loco running at those scale speeds? I guess I'm not as concerned with the sound, but if that's part of the deal, fine! With a small switching layout, smooth, steady, SLOW, consistent speeds is my goal. Yours looks great. Thanks!

    I’ve been along for the ride for quite a while now and have enjoyed every minute of it and learned a great deal along the way. No doubt like many I have dreams of a layout that occupies acreages but realistically a smaller footprint is all I am likely to achieve. Around the world many have adapted to this reality and produced fine layouts in confined spaces. One format that seems to have a strong following in the UK is the Inglenook. Perhaps what you have developed here should be called the Anglenook. 😉

    The mood the music sets for this scene is perfect. I designed my layout theme based solely on how Randy Newman’s Baltimore made me feel about run down city derelict sections of town where the trains usually run. There’s a beauty in the degradation of industrial urban scenery and I’ve always felt as an artist it was my duty to document that interplay of the man mad vs time and nature. I know you have a similar philosophy and that’s why I come here so often. Thanks for your time. -christian

    Your layout looks great! And much thanks for taking the time to produce all the excellent videos. I’ve watched many and have learned a lot. I like your down-to-earth approach, and I hope you continue posting. On the question of layout size, I agree with your thoughts that smaller ones have strong arguments in their favour - gaining a sense of accomplishment being one. For awhile I’ve thought that once a layout exceeds a certain size - I’m not certain what size that is, but let’s say ‘big’ - it can stop being a pleasant and satisfying hobby and transform into something more like a job. Anyway, again, thanks for all the work you’ve put into this! I’m learning a lot.

I live in the St. Louis area, with the Mississippi and the Illinois river converging. 4 major railroads are on both sides of the rivers. With a few short lines. If I go back 20 years its even more railroads. Cool! And a bit daunting. Lots of possibilities, which I really like. So lots of compression opportunities. I'm really liking the beginning of the River Road. It seems like there are many of the same scene composition issues to learn from. Thanks again.

    After this gem and when the desire to build a new module down the road grows , I submit a request for you to build a high desert/ high elevation themed remote spur line operation. A time stand still place hidden from the world but still exists if you know where to look. Might be a good challenge modeling realistic desert railroading.

    The bigger manufacturers might ought to take note, I'm thinking with the level of detail engines and rolling stock have gotten, this is becoming art not only model railroading, and railroaders buying these newer pieces are wanting to look at what they've purchased and looking at their newly acquired units on a finely detailed layout such as the one you've pieced together here is I'm sure on everybody's mind to accomplish. As I was listening to you and looking at the different angles you shown on this video, it becomes a movable work of art, and a sense of realism sinks in deep the further you start looking at it, over it, and on it. Makes that person who just spent that close to $400 Rapido engine or $60 Cement Hopper not such a bad deal after all. This is Model Railroading of the future right here I'm a telling yah. You Boomer, know how I feel about your accomplishment here but I'll tell you again. This is the best 8ft × 16" piece work that keeps drawing me back to see what 101 tutorial or redo of realistic engine sounds from newly acquired speakers or even the new LocSound5 electronics that really are rocking at the moment. I'm with you all the way partner lol at least until I fall off the wagon lol 😆

      I appreciate your comments and observations Brian. I think you sort of summed up some of my sentiments about running that prized locomotive with some choice rolling stock, every now-and-again, on small realistic looking layout. The approach is rather minimalist, but I have always been rather conservative anyway. It all makes good sense to me. And yes, the pursuit of better sound is also on my agenda as well. Cheers ~ Boomer.

Are they operated manually or electronic?

    Boomer, it can't be done yet... your still missing the grain dump location on the track for the elevator auger.... but other wise it is in every way! I do believe that your talk of a chain link fence would turn that corner from just perfect to just a little busy you'll find.. I could be wrong. Thank you for sharing and inspiring some of us to start small and not worry about the "empire." By the time you have two or three under your belt your well on your way to the "basement empire" we have in our heads that seem so daunting that we never take the first steps...

    • @boomerdiorama

      Yes, for sure. Lot's of little details like the grain silo etc. I won't be using chain-link fence. Just some random barbed-wire fence here and there which is everywhere out here. Cheers and thanks for supporting the channel with your comments. ~ Boomer.

    You made a slightly misleading statement; 8'x16" does not meet the size requirement for NMRA's Master Model Railroader Scenery Certificate. In HO Scale, 32 square feet is required (a full sheet of plywood). N Scale requires 18 square feet. However, there's enough flexibility in the MMR requirements that earning the Scenery Certificate is not required and enough of the other Certificates could be earned on this smaller footprint. That being said, your 10 square feet certainly look better and is probably more enjoyable to operate than almost all chase-the-tail 4'x8' table layouts in existence. I think it's time for the NMRA to re-examine their minimum size requirement.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank You for clearing that up. I was vague on the requirement in terms of a footprint, and I agree with your suggestion of re-examining the minimum size requirement. Cheers ~ Boomer.

    • @milwmodeler3752
      @milwmodeler3752 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@boomerdiorama One caveat to the requirement, is that the 32 sq. ft. do not have to be on the same layout. So it can be a culmination of a couple shelf layouts, a module, maybe a coffee table loop. As long as everything meets the finished requirements, it can be counted.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want to achieve a "Master Model Roader" status with the NMRA you need to complete pre-requisite certificates based on certain categories to achieve the (MMR) status. You can find out about them on their website (www.nmra.org).
