Thank you. We are in love with Ireland! It's just so beautiful and you're right the peace & quiet is fantastic. Hope you enjoy following this journey with us. Can't promise it will be done in a year but we are trying.
if you want to clear rough ground, a goat or two roaming around scoffing everything will be much easier than a mechanical mower. goats are really good for stripping back all the plant growth.
We will definitely. We pit out a video each week of our progress. Mainly, it's all about the caravan at the moment, but in the new year, hopefully, the motorhome will sell, and we will have the funds to start on the house.
We are from the North of England, so we are pretty used to rain. Although everyone says it's worse here so far, I haven't noticed a huge difference. That may change, though, I guess, in a few months' time! 😅
Hello from Manchester! Have only recently found your youtube channel and now find myself binge watching. I'm very envious of your change of lifestyle and oh to be younger! Its going to be a big and probably longer job than you anticipated but in the end you are going to have a beautiful home in a beautiful setting for your family to enjoy, hopefully for a long time. As I've already said, I am now binge watching and may I suggest that all future episodes are numbered so that we can all watch these in the correct order. Keep on with the good work!
Hi. Thanks so much for watching & binge watching!🤣 We haven't numbered but if you go on our uploads it's all in order, 1 per week usually on a Saturday unless life gets in the way. I hope not too much longer than we anticipate. The grant people only give us 13 months. That being said having a deadline keeps us on track. 👍
Congratulations on getting this land and project! We got ours just over a year ago, also a ruined, derelict old cottage but in Scotland. Don't let doubters phase you, when we were there we just knew it was for us. There may be roadblocks on the way and you may lose patience but I am trying to see it as a process and not the final destination 💚
Thank you. We are feeling a lot more positive this week. We love it here but I think we had a few days of worrying that we had over-faced ourselves with the amount of work ahead. We are feeling confident now though and trying as you & many others have advised to take it one job at a time & not get ourselves so stressed.
When I was a kid & I used to see old falling down houses in the middle of nowhere, I used to say to my dad, "buy that & stick a caravan there & do it up"! He used to just laugh at me😡 Fast forward a good few years & someone bought the houses I'd said it about & were doing just that. One was on Anglesey & the other in Etherow. They were both done beautifully & now would cost an arm & a leg & then the other arm & leg on top to buy now!! Whenever we drove past them when they were finished, I used to say to him, "remember when I told you to buy that & do it up?"😂 Nobody loves a smart a*$e though😂😂
When those about 11 years old, as a punishment my teacher told me hack back the nettles around the back of our sports hall. I was given a scythe that was taller than I was to do the job. Most admit it was a lot of fun swinging that thing, watching an arc of nettles just get cut down with one swing!
It looks like it could be the most amazing home. I love the serenity and sound of the birds - no road noise! Leitrim is a beautiful rugged county but feels miles from anywhere. Good luck on your journey and in your new life. Welcome to Ireland 😊

It's a nice little tour of the property (I love the inside shutters ;)! Lots of moments of excitement and panic too will come; but the ideas will fall into place gradually; don't hesitate to take ideas from wherever they come, sometimes it opens up perspectives that we hadn't thought of! Think carefully about the sunshine for the location of the rooms (I don't want to seem directive but am I already? Sorry! I went through that with my house and things change sometimes very fast for some better...).
Thank you so much for your comments & tips. We appreciate all advice & suggestions. We are definitely going to try & always think ahead buy no doubt we will make mistakes, as long as they aren't major we will be ok.
We renovated a house n france my best advice would be make sure you insulated the roof well when you have your new roof on and you will save a fortune on heating with having a fire in the middle of they house. Best of luck and enjoy its hard work but so worth it.
Will be a great place but i hope you have a endless amounts of money . Because your going to need it . Good luck your very brave take on all that work .it will be worth it when finished.
Hi,there welcome home..I would love to be able to help ye iam a retired carpenter love these buildings..but sorry to say my two knees are not good enough for work..wishing ye all the best from..pat tullamore
I spent 3 years looking for a house in midlands and west. As soon as I saw a sign by the motor home I knew who the listing agent was and the area they cover 😂😂 Good insulation is a must in Ireland. You have free hand to create exaclty what you want. It will take time but will be perfect.
Thank you. I hope you found your dream home too? Insulation is a high priority for us. I feel living in a mobile home through the winter has given us a good indication of what we need to invest in and what isn't so important. Insulation is now a high investment item 🤣
congrats lads. breathability and no dry lining or sand and cement. we restored our homestead in co kerry. Against all builders and architects. Its all manual labour. go for it.
I love the excitement in your voice,i have just finished a200 year old wreck ..... 5 years hard work .........remember to future proof it,put either tubes or ropes inside the walls for unforeseen addition s !
@@theirishhomestead and quite rightly so.If you are fitting a multifuel stove into the fireplace , think hard about your chimney, look into 7" pumice \ cement rather than a stainless liner- safer and wil last a lifetime .
@jimshotrod2519 we will for the main house but the stove we have been long term loaned is just a 5". We are just making do as it's only a temporary home. Thanks for the advice.👍
Great video, great plans for your family. I'm not so sure about the drop down ladders though, especially when you get older...... However, I think you have a fantastic find and a really cool project ahead of you so all the very best with that one, I will follow it. Oh! please can you give me the details of the singer and song that you had playing at the end of your video, I really like it...... All the best success for your project......
Yes the drop-down ladders will probably not happen! No doubt lots of things will change. Glad to have you follow us, the support is very welcome. The singer is Loving Caliber, and the title is Homesick
@@theirishhomestead Things are going well, fitted a bifolding patio door last week to take in the view and it's turned out amazing, the place is sealed now,so plumber and electrician starting next week,it's be amazing to see power in the house! 😁 Money is getting very tight now,I started without the grant, but I'm going to see if I can get help to get it finished 🤞
I am very excited for your future lifestyle. May it be everything you wish it to be. Will you stay there and live in the van while you work on your home ?
We wish we could keep the motorhome but sadly it's just too expensive to keep for occasional use over the next year or so whilst our focus is the house. We will have to sell George to fund the renovations.
Life is a craft. You have a Rembrandt you have a Sunday artist. Secondly. 0:40 roof gutter downpipe former water butt site? 1:50 tree if Ash dieback free? 6:01 former settle bed site?

I have a cottage like this, the swallows will build a new nest so as long as there’s no birds in them you can put them outside, beware they might try to come into ur house next year
We love the swallows, but I think in hindsight we disrupted them, and they abandoned the chicks. We plan on building some kind of nesting boxes for next spring as we will be disturbing them all the more next year!
I wish you all the best in this new chapter. It is huge, but will be so rewarding. Check out Colette O'Neill, of "Bealtaine Cottage". Not only did she restore her cottage, but also her land. ❤
I would love to live in Ireland or Scotland someday if possible! I've always lived in the country and grew up on a farm in Idaho. So I've only known rural life. What does property like this cost?
If you ever do decide to do it make sure you familiarise yourself well with the country and where best to locate. Property in Ireland is generally expensive but there are gems like this if you're happy to live remotely.
This will be labour of love, but I wish You the best of luck with it! Subscribing to follow Your journey and I can't wait to see it when You will be finished.
What system are you using for water while getting things organised? Do you think you will have any issues with Ireland's ridiculously strict panning laws (if you don't happen to be originally from the county you're seeking planning permission in)? Best of luck with your new home
The farmer is kindly allowing us the temporary use of his water supply. We are not changing the footprint of the house so hopefully planning will not be a problem. 👍
That seems to be the case. You could be unlucky, if there’s an awkward neighbour, because technically you’re changing the use of at least part of the property, from agriculture to residential. Usually that’s not a problem, but we had a difficult, anonymous neighbour who objected to us parking on our own property, so rather than deal with all that, we park on the road outside. We’re here long enough now that I’m sure we could try again, but we’re used to it now.
Wow, that's frustrating! People can be so odd! So far, we have been treated wonderfully here, and our neighbours seem great. I think you have been unlucky for sure. I mean, why stop you from parking on your driveway, utterly bonkers! Hope you get it sorted & pray we don't encounter such pettiness!
In fairness to all concerned, our property didn’t have a driveway as nd we were parking in a field. The planning officer who came to see us explained that that constitutes a change of use, from agriculture to vehicular and there had been a complaint. Of course, he wanted me to engage with the planning process and get permission to park in my own garden, but the budget wouldn’t allow, even if my principles did! We will never know which individual decided to make life awkward, rather than speak to me, nor why, but everyone else has been super and we have excellent friends here who support us in every possible way. That’s the Irish way.
We lived in house in a village in Italy that was built in 1849. The interior wood shutters on the windows were common back then. No drapes on windows then. No indoor plumbing either. They had a small shed that was attached to the home. It had space for the animals and separately was a small room for a toilet and bath. Which I am sure was not added on until well into the 1940’s because the town had no sewage until after WW2. No indoor water either. The town still had the communal place where the ladies did their laundry. And they could get water for the house. It was near a spring. I live in Canada now and can’t imagine going back. Lived from 1981-83 that was plenty.
Welcome from south Leitrim. We have underfloor heating in our house and it's great. But, as I'm sure you already know, you'll need to make sure you have plenty of insulation in the floor to lay the underfloor water pipes on.
Wow! What an amazing adventure. An old 4x4 and a tractor with a platform on the back and a hydraulic lift on the front to get up high should start you off well. Best of luck on your new adventure.
@@theirishhomestead look for old tractors at the sea side - used to drag boats to the launch. Or seek the help of one of those TH-camrs who pride themselves on starting the old machines left in the fields for years may be able to help. Im sure if you asked half the farmers around the neighbourhood would have heaps of old materials they’d love to drop off. Best :)
The outhouse building . You've taken down the broken roof part in middle. The square Gray brick thing why not turn it into a fish pond. It look brilliant
We want to retain it as a water trough. Our aim in the future is to remain 'off grid' and be as self-sufficient as possible. We think it's a great thing to hold on to. Let's be honest in Ireland it will never be empty 🤣
Welcome to Ireland, this place has huge potential, thanks for showing it to us, An inside-outside space is important in Ireland because it rains a lot, that hay shed would work well, all you need is to roof it , and put an outside heater in place, no walls somewhere you can sit outside when its raining, can be used for working on carpentry projects, drying clothes, repairing cars, a swing for the kids etc.
Sounds like you have got your wellies on Rebecca 😂 wow this is great news and an amazing place. Where is it? Roughly? And which estate agent did you use ‘cos I am boggle eyed from looking ❤❤

@@theirishhomestead Don't worry, every defect gets respect!
We renovated a house n france my best advice would be make sure you insulated the roof well when you have your new roof on and you will save a fortune on heating with having a fire in the middle of they house. Best of luck and enjoy its hard work but so worth it.
Great advice. We are definitely going to ensure we are well insulated! Thank you 💕.
Will be a great place but i hope you have a endless amounts of money . Because your going to need it . Good luck your very brave take on all that work .it will be worth it when finished.
We don't have endless pots of money no, but we do have enthusiasm and hopefully time. 😉
Well done to the both of you it looks mint
Thanks Neil
Amazing and wish you all the success.
Hi,there welcome home..I would love to be able to help ye iam a retired carpenter love these buildings..but sorry to say my two knees are not good enough for work..wishing ye all the best from..pat tullamore
Hi! What a lovely kind offer. Thank you for your well wishes. ❤️🇮🇪
Congratulations! Wish you all the best!
Thank you so much. 💓
I spent 3 years looking for a house in midlands and west. As soon as I saw a sign by the motor home I knew who the listing agent was and the area they cover 😂😂
Good insulation is a must in Ireland.
Stunning, best of luck with it
Thank you! ☺️
Waves from North Leitrim: welcome to Off-grid living in THE best county in Ireland! Xxx
Thank you, we love it here. Leitrim is beautiful 😍
congrats lads. breathability and no dry lining or sand and cement. we restored our homestead in co kerry. Against all builders and architects. Its all manual labour. go for it.
Thank you. Yes these old cottages need to breathe. Luckily we have Sam who is pretty good at just getting stuck in. Congratulations on your home. 🏡
I love projects like this. Just subscribed and cant wait to see how it turns out. You're only about an hour from us in Omagh.
Aww thank you. Love how many people are rooting for us. 😊
love your channel, have now liked and subscribed. Looking forward to more videos, thanks
Thanks for subbing and supporting us it means a lot. 💗
❤❤@@theirishhomestead
How beautiful and so much space. But I reckon it will all be finished in about 6 weeks 😂. Great to see it from day one. Good luck.
Ha ha! Lots of red tape will definitely mean longer than 6 weeks if we want to avail of the grant. But thanks for the positivity. X
Yayyyy congratulations perseverance and lots of courage youve gone for your dream and succeeded sooo happy for you all new amazing beginnings xxx
Aww thanks 😊 xxd
This look back just shows how much you have already achieved but such a big job ahead.Looking forward to seeing the cottage emerge from its slumber.
@Gillby47 thank you. Excited to share the process with everyone.
I love the excitement in your voice,i have just finished a200 year old wreck ..... 5 years hard work .........remember to future proof it,put either tubes or ropes inside the walls for unforeseen addition s !
Thank you! I was a bit giddy that morning. Getting up before everyone else and it felt amazing wandering around knowing it was ours! ❤️
Dream comes true!
Good Luck!
Thank you. ❤️☘️🇮🇪
Thank you very much and good luck......@@theirishhomestead
Im in the middle of the same thing in county Clare, delivery i found this channel, looking forward to some binge watching to catch up,best of luck!
Hi John! Thanks for subbing. Hope your place is going well? Are you doing the grant too?
Wow! Looks like its going to be amazing ❤
Thanks guys x
wouah un sacre travail de renovation ..bon courage..
Thank you. Hoping to get started on the house early next year.
Life is a craft. You have a Rembrandt you have a Sunday artist. Secondly. 0:40 roof gutter downpipe former water butt site? 1:50 tree if Ash dieback free? 6:01 former settle bed site?
Let's hope we have both of those in great supply! 👍
Awesome view ,good luck from the ozarks
Wow, thank you! 😊 We definitely need all the luck we can get. 🍀
that soundsscape is just delightful
CONgratulations, I am very jealous, but not of the work, it will be worth it tho. I hope everything will go as well as possible
I hope so too! The beauty here keeps us ploughing on despite the hard work ahead. ❤️
Fabulous Well done !
Thank you.
I wish you all the best in this new chapter. It is huge, but will be so rewarding. Check out Colette O'Neill, of "Bealtaine Cottage". Not only did she restore her cottage, but also her land. ❤
Thank you. I love Bealtine Cottage, Colette is inspirational to me. ❤️
It’s beautiful
Beautiful!
It really is! 🥰
I would love to live in Ireland or Scotland someday if possible! I've always lived in the country and grew up on a farm in Idaho. So I've only known rural life. What does property like this cost?
Hi, hope you get your dream someday soon. We paid €55k for this property. Hope this helps. Good luck. ☺️
If you ever do decide to do it make sure you familiarise yourself well with the country and where best to locate.
Property in Ireland is generally expensive but there are gems like this if you're happy to live remotely.
So beautiful
Thank you so much
This will be labour of love, but I wish You the best of luck with it! Subscribing to follow Your journey and I can't wait to see it when You will be finished.
Thank you. Can't wait to get started on it. 👍
Lots of luck for the future.
Thank you so much. Really kind of you. 💓
Beautiful location.
Thank you, it really is beautiful here.
Its been a challenge to get the basic services up to the house, but it all been worth it
Definitely put under floor heating in cos it’s cheap and you will love it.
We are definitely considering it! Lots are doing it over here now.
Welcome from south Leitrim.
We have underfloor heating in our house and it's great. But, as I'm sure you already know, you'll need to make sure you have plenty of insulation in the floor to lay the underfloor water pipes on.
Alright the transition begins from Van Lifers to Homesteaders. This is a beautiful piece of property for sure but you can do so much on an acre.
Yes it is really beautiful. We just fell in love with it. Wish it had more than an acre but we can as you say do a lot with that.
Wow! What an amazing adventure. An old 4x4 and a tractor with a platform on the back and a hydraulic lift on the front to get up high should start you off well. Best of luck on your new adventure.
Let's hope we get help from our farming neighbours as not sure we have the budget for those! 🤣 Thanks for the good luck message x
Best :)
@KymHammond thanks, great tips. 👍
Thanks Johnny, yes I think Sam has plans for it as a workshop, but yes, drying clothes in rainy weather is a good idea 💡We appreciate your help.
Nothing a lick of paint can't sort...
🤣🤣
O, P.S. WELCOME TO IRELAND....FROM WEST CORK.
Thank you. ☺️
Sounds like you have got your wellies on Rebecca 😂 wow this is great news and an amazing place. Where is it? Roughly? And which estate agent did you use ‘cos I am boggle eyed from looking ❤❤
Aww Linda it's bonkers so many beautiful places but you have to be in Ireland as the good ones are snapped up quick!
We constantly checked on www.daft.ie that's where all the estate agents advertise x
Some green paints years ago contained arsenic, don't think old is safe
Wow that's scary! Thanks for the heads up. 👍
Wow.
