How much is this 1972 IH Scout Build worth?

  • Luke looks over a recent International Scout II that was built for auction. What are the pros and cons, and what should you know before buying a truck like this.
    All in all a mostly nice truck but definitely has shortcuts taken and somethings that a true restoration shop wouldn't dream of doing. Most of the offenses are fixable, except for sheet metal and body work.
    One thing we forgot to mention... Can anybody even fit in the rear seat? and how do you get back there?

    I had an 80 Scout II and the rear bumper was a chrome diamond plate step bumper. I'm from Annapolis and everyone knew me because of my Scout.

    Oh Boy, Where to even start. Looks like they started with a pretty nice Scout, but you pointed out my pet peeve with most of these builds....Details ! You did miss mentioning the lack of rad overflow hose/ tank, and the obviously welded transfer case casting (I couldn't believe that with such a generic transfer case, they didn't use a good one!)
    You made some great observations with no attitude, Nice video! (This thing sold for 120K......Nuts!!)

    Original factory harness to the rear was typically routed within the right boxed frame rail. Much better protected than what we see here.

    My '71 has amber turn signal lenses also and so far all the '71/'72s I've seen do also. Very informable video, Thank-You.

      If you watch the whole video of him critiquing everything on that truck there's one part where the Amber front lights are on they used Amber bulbs if you watch the video all the way through he'll see it has Amber bulbs it's a custom build

    No Radiator overflow( hose or bottle) Positive Battery cable routing and zip tied is hilarious. Once you see one shortcut you better believe there are many you won’t find.

    Is is highly rustproof and is the exterior finish quite resistant to the overall elements. You have a legendary truck. Scout 2 is a champion.

    Regarding rear bumpers, I have 2 in my possession and neither are original to my '73. That being said, both of mine have that space in the middle like the front does but no holes for a plate. The rear mounts through the surface of the bumper to the support brackets while the front mounts from the top down, so I don't know if they went to all the trouble to make a front fit the rear. I scoured my Scout Encyclopedia images to see if that space on the back of chrome bumpers was always there or not and I have not yet found one that did not have that space. Obviously not Jim Allen or John Glancy level of knowledge but it's all I got :)

    120k for a Scout with Jeep Cherokee trailing arms repurposed for seat mounts, they still have the bushings installed.. haha

    I've been seriously thinking about a Scout II if I did plan to do one I would want to do maybe not a full restoration but like your legends truck with a 2.8 Cummins 6L80 44s 33 1050 2.1/2-in lift just like you guys normally do I think is perfect. I would probably hire you guys to find it and do the job because from what I've seen you guys do great work and you guys know what you're doing a lot more than I do. The little extra money that I would pay you to find me one would probably be a savings because I might buy the wrong one and cost me a lot more money. Thank you 👍

      We know many people who have spent a lot of extra money from buying the wrong truck and then wanting to fix those types of issues. Either educate yourself or pay someone educated to help. It will be worth it. Hopefully this helps some people out.

    My thought is a nice rig that needs to be sorted further. Rough country leaf springs BTW-because I have the same. They work, but I’d have spent much more on great leaf springs if I’m going to ask $$. The wheels look like custom ‘ steelies’, which are quite pricey. Definitely a focus on exterior/ interior appearances that one sees at a distance and at a quick glance. Electrical, brakes, corrosion control, hinges, latches, intake, firewall, bump stops, engine cooling system and heat control on that exhaust leave some room for improvement. Love the dash. Seats from a convertible with integrated 3-point seat belts excellent. Lots of time into a nice Vintage Air HVAC that frees up a LOT of valuable under hood space. My 72 grew up in the far north of California without salt and very low humidity, and miraculously has no rust in all the typical places, including the front cab mount area. I think that makes 7, even if you have never seen it!😂 (and I still blasted things with the fancy Eastwood undercoating)

      Correct, I misspoke about the leaf springs. I believe the steelies are just the us wheel setup ($100/per). Agreed, lots of fixable items but it would be a bummer to spend a bunch of money only to have a project truck again. The seats look like front suburban seats to me, which means they do not fold forward, meaning the rear seat is inaccessible. Just lots of little things.

    Did I miss where an estimate on the value was given? How much is a Scout like this worth?

      Unfortunately we try not to give our value estimate in a video. As everything is worth a different amount to different people. (plus saying values online doesn't age well with the times). This video is mainly to show people what they might otherwise not see and they can use their own judgement from there.

      @@patrickwalsh1814 Thanks Patrick, I've got a 1979 Scout II that I bought back in the early 90's from the original owner. That helps me with my decision to do a restomod for the Scout vs buying a new truck that will depreciate.

    Haven't watched the video (yet). My guess is that a "survivor" would be worth more than a "restoration" and a restoration would be worth more than a "build" but I read somewhere that a 1973 Scout sold for $127,500 on July 9, 2021.

    Another reason that there may not be a line between end cap and rear quarter - fiberglass tub!

    It was all painted after assembly, too. All the fasteners are painted.

    What made you think it was a Skyjacker lift? I have a 4” lift on my ‘79 Scout II and I can’t identify it.

      Great question. I must admit I had it backwards and said the wrong thing in the video, I believe these are probably Rough Country. They are a little thicker on the ends of each leaf. The Skyjackers taper off thinner toward the end and have glide pads between the ends of the leafs for a smoother ride.

    Dude you were being kind... that is a typical LA garbage flip... I might have missed you commenting on it... but I hope you blasted the HUBCAPS OVER THE HUBS... on a supposed 4x4 Scout... This is probably a peesacrap or bulletproof turd... The missing fender bolts... that is typical of BP, look at that green OMAZE turd they did... look at the front d-side mate of the lower grille valance to the front fender... that is their wheelhouse... lazy.

    Any issues getting the front driveshaft past the trans pan?

      No idea, It looks like it should clear. But without proper bump stops it quite likely the front axle diff could hit the oil pan and crack it.

    I would love to see some of their work so I could tear it apart also I've been in the body business for over 50 years and believe me I can pick new stuff apart I'm sure I can find plenty of flaws in their stuff too. To take a man's car and rip it apart that tells me a lot about the people. Sorry I just called the way it is. I also see that they keep pushing their business we wouldn't do it that way nothing we would do. Kept saying he wasn't sure about this or that. It was a custom build it wasn't original and how do you know if the windshield wipers are new or not amazing

      Not our intention to tear anyone down. Only trying to educate current and future owners on what we feel are the right and wrong ways to build trucks. Certainly as a body man you can appreciate the difference between taking the time to do the job right vs just wanting to get the job done as fast as possible. Its unfortunate that we cannot give the builder a rebuttal to justify why they did certain things, as that would be enlightening. As a shop we are always looking to improve our trucks and build each one better than the last.
