I was never able to finish the game because when I was in the final boss fight with bowser, the stage broke into a star and my mom thought it was a pentagram so she threw out my N64.

Exploits, bugs and cheating does the trick. It's not really completed. To complete it properly you need all the stars etc. The fastest record there is about 1 hr 40 minutes or so, I believe, and that's a speedrun with exploits too for ppl practicing it for decades. I wouldn't take this too seriously comparing it to a different video game era. : P
ZonZorZerx first of all, the 120 star wr is 1:38. Second of all, this is a speedrun, beating the game as fast as possible with as few stars as possible. Lastly, the tricks are all at least 90 times as impressive as “normal play”.
Actually, this run is very old and outdated. It was the first ever run that beat the game with 0 stars, since then there have been many faster Tool-Assisted Speedruns. The credits make me think about how much effort and time the game took to make, and the rest of the video shows me how much is actually required to beat it
It was a tool assisted speed run, no button input from anyone except a computer. Still amazingly impressive though, having to figure out at exactly which frame to tell the computer to press the button takes a massive amount of time and a very intelligent person.
That is not how tas works. The game slows down frame by frame and you use savestates so that you can do frame perfect tricks and get insane times, and do insanely difficult things.

man, I remember trying speed running when I was like 7-8 years old, and the best I was able to do was a 16 star run 💀 I find it almost impossible to believe that it’s been over a decade since I last watched this video.

Everyone saying he got a star and that the title is misleading is incorrect. If you look at the star count while Mario is flying around after beating the last Bowser Level, you can see that it is still at zero. To beat the game you HAVE to jump to the big star at the end, but it doesn't count as an actual star.

This isn't even the fastest way to beat SM64 any more, check out "1 key" and see what absolute craziness can be done in 4 minutes 20 seconds.

Exploits, bugs and cheating does the trick. It's not really completed. To complete it properly you need all the stars etc. The fastest record there is about 1 hr 40 minutes or so, I believe, and that's a speedrun with exploits too for ppl practicing it for decades. I wouldn't take this too seriously comparing it to a different video game era. : P

It was a tool assisted speed run, no button input from anyone except a computer. Still amazingly impressive though, having to figure out at exactly which frame to tell the computer to press the button takes a massive amount of time and a very intelligent person.
That is not how tas works. The game slows down frame by frame and you use savestates so that you can do frame perfect tricks and get insane times, and do insanely difficult things.

Everyone saying he got a star and that the title is misleading is incorrect. If you look at the star count while Mario is flying around after beating the last Bowser Level, you can see that it is still at zero. To beat the game you HAVE to jump to the big star at the end, but it doesn't count as an actual star.
