TRP DHR EVO

  • With the new DH-R EVO, TRP Cycling Components set out to create a mountain bike brake strong and reliable enough to handle the continually increasing speeds of mountain bikes. Larger wheels and better suspension have demanded more braking force while heavy eMTBs capable of quickly repeating DH laps put more weight and ride time into the equation. Over the past few years, we have seen TRP consistently put out brakes with huge amounts of modulation but left us wishing for slightly more stopping power. They sent us a set of the new TRP DH-R EVO brakes to conduct a Dissected Feature on many months ago, and we have requested two more sets to mount on various test bikes ever since. After almost a year of abuse on long travel eBikes, and enduro sleds, we are happy to report back with this long-term review.
    TRP came out swinging with the fit and finish on the DH-R Evo. The CNC and polishing process is top notch on the lever, master cylinder, and caliper. The edges are all smooth, clearances for pad install are plentiful, and the overall design is on the level. Details like recessed bleeding screws, large knurls on the lever adjustment knob, and minimal catch points on the brake really convey the image of a flagship product.
    We mounted the TRP DH-R Evo brakes to a 48lb eMTB, a DH bike and an enduro-ready Norco Sight for the testing period. The bikes were running 29in wheels and the large 223mm rotors. The Initial bed in process was one of the fastest I have experienced. TRP said they reformulated the resin pads for fast break in but would not divulge any details. To test the claim, I started with brand new brakes at the top of a trail, gave them two quick bed-in full power pulls, then dropped in. I was amazed that within the first few corners, the brakes were at full power...

    TRP is taking the industry by force! I've been running a set of their DH-R's (Not the evo) and LOVE them! Bleed them once when I installed them and havent needed to since. The DH-R's come with theier sintered metalic pads (evo comes with the 'preformance resin pad) and they did take longer bedding in than other brakes i've had in the past but once you get them good they are truly epic. Nice to never have to worry about brake fade!

    I have the gold limited edition dh-r evo brakes. Waited 3 months for them and I almost canceled my order but really glad I didn’t. Worth the wait and they look and feel amazing!! Can’t wait for summer for the lift access parks to open so that I can push them to they’re full potential. Definitely a pair of brakes I’ll be keeping on hand for a long time!

    These brakes blow away anything SRAM makes, no questions. I would never run Sram again. The rotors are built for performance! I do miss the snappy feel from XTR's but the modulation is super wonderful, gobs of power and I've never faded them either. Being a guy at 215lbs, its a huge benefit for me.

    Do brake manufacturers regardless whether SRAM, Shimano, Magura, TRP etc. recommend a specific disc rotor to go with their brakes. Are there any difference in performance among brake rotors? Did TRP recommend a specific disc and size for these brakes?

    • @ChefIan73
      @ChefIan73 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would need to use TRP rotors as they are significantly thicker. A Shimano or SRAM rotor is only 1.8mm to start with. Magura rotors are 2mm to start. But these calipers are designed around a 2.3mm rotor.

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ian took the words right out of my brain! You can run other brands if you really wanted to but there would be a noticeable performance loss with heat dissipation.

      @@TheLoamWolf @Ian Barner, Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm currently building a parts list for a custom bike build and a bit budget conscious. My question was more on compatibility and related effect on performance. As you know there are only a few 'proper' brake manufacturers (as listed) but there are a lot more disc rotor manufacturers out there as rotors are more 'generic' since they are relatively easier to manufacture. One can find a cheap brake disc that is comparable to a high end name brand one but then the issue would be will one sacrifice a significant amount of performance?

    Not objectiv enough in my opinion. 30.000feet is nothing for a brake. I ordered the TRP with ABS now for my. I trust this brakes with my life too., but the brake have a few issues. For example bubbles behind the piston is 1 of them where you have to pay extra attention.

      Thanks for checking in on this video! While I (Cole) agree that 30k is not much for a perfect long-term test they did work amazingly. I have actually had now 2 other sets on different bikes. This brake set is actually still on the bike which I gave to my friend, no issues other than pads and a bleed! I have had some issues with another set that required a new piston on the lever but that's about it, and that was after 300k'ish of decent on that set.
