- Rafale is a very capable 4.5 generation fighter and simple way of explaining what is a 4.5 generation fighter? , it is 5th generation minus stealth. Rafale posses special stealth features , Rafale posses something very unique in 4+ gen fighters it has active stealth - i.e it doesnt posses stealth characteritics naturally like an F 22 or an F 35 but achieves stealth by other means it acquires stealth by radar cancellation . Rafale has rcs of 1.25m^2 for compariosn typhoon has rcs of 1m^2 and Su 35 has rcs of 2m^2 but when rafale uses its Spectra EW suite its rcs is said to become as low as 0.06m^2 for comparision rcs of F35 is o.o1m^2 and rcs of 0.06 is quite stealthier than official rcs of Russian Sukhoi T 50 ( 0.5 to 0.1m^2) a new system called DEDRIA which is under deveploment will reduce rcs of rafale even more.

If you are claiming to have a RCS of below that, then why you need to import a 5th gen fighter?
or for that matter why you are developing a jet matching to that RCS(0.001)J-31 as someone already pointed out...So IF RCS is 0.01 nothing changes for S-400 as far as locking on RAFALE is concern that scenario has already been explained.

yeah ,first I admit what I said is really true. My father is a senior engineer working for PLAAF , and my interest is aircraft too, I am studying aerospace engineering in a famous university of china. My dad told me some details of J20 And next H20 that both of them are propagandized to be stealth aircrafts exactly. But as far as I know, these are not really complete, actually J20 and H 20 are not perfectly stealth, and the Engines of them are both not match the demandings of PLAAF, I only say these on youtube, I dare not to do that in China mainland social media, bcz of the reality of China aircraft products. I think India will be a superpower soon, bcz the average age of india population is 27 which china is 37, this is the very crucial advantage for india to surpass china in the nearly future. And INdia have better relationship with western countries , india doesnt trap in the trade war with any other countries. the trade war makes china economy hurt heavily basically, just bcz china gov dont publish the real data of them to india ,indian now can imagine how tough the life in china is. I think india will be the leader of world in 2030, india military are strong too, all of the qualities which china copied from other weapons are under the real level of original one, so PLA's equipments just are shown to make our chinese feel safe, I said im honest and bcz of my dad, i can know some information about the real situation. what an excellent comparison.You have a strategic bend of mind besides being through in technical matters , congrats. With S 400 , both country have a huge disadvantage to use these platforms. Zamming S 400 is not an easy option , and it can be handled as it comes. Just in case such situation arise, the major fight will be in BVR range and there IAF can easily find a solution. After all Chinese fighter jets are yet to prove battle worthiness in real fight situation. In the mean while IAF must focus on a 6th generation craft within next 10 to 15 years.

There is a huge difference in RCS values for a wartime fully loaded Rafale v/s the base RCS specs published by Dassault. The RCS, Speed, Maneuverability, Max Ceiling are all impacted by weapons load. Without going into actual capabilities during wartime, planning is done based on stated specs. If the specs are at least 80% true, then India has a problem. With Air defenses activated on Chinese side, Rafale can be quite easily tracked by ground based radar due to 1+ meter RCS. You are comparing a 4th and 5th gen aircraft based on your understanding and assumptions, which seems quite amateur.

Any kind of engagement would only be BVR. WVR era is long gone. IAF should always strive to develop its BVR capabilities. Even S400 would not be enough because in future new bvr aam and agm missiles are going to be inducted

You make great videos but I think your analysis is far too liberal and a bit too optimistic. For example,
1. You are calculating the RCS of J-20 completely of an IAF claim (not saying IAF is lying). But there was a various speculation about this and one of the most important one is that J-20 might’ve been using radar reflectors ( it’s common for stealth aircrafts to use it in peacetime exercises so that other aircrafts and ground stations could easily keep track of it). Radar RCS is one of the most classified secrets in the world and I don’t think we shouldn’t take it from an IAF claim. From the airframe design the 0.001 m2 claimed by China isn’t too far fetched (frontal stealth).
2. Canards doesn’t necessarily compromise frontal stealth, there are ways to mitigate that. NASA’s X-36 is a good example. Flight controls can also designed to mitigate keep the radar reflections down from a canard.
3. The NEZ is a variable just like the max range of a missile is( for example, just cos PL-15 has a 200-300 km range doesn’t meant it’s going to be able to successfully reach all targets at that distance), the 130 km NEZ isn’t something meteor can achieve against a highly maneuvering target like J-20 (it’s probably against non-manoeuvring test targets they used, actually NEZ are often kept a secret). Realistically it would be close to 60-70 kms at best.
4. From the size of the nose, it’s very unlikely that it’s radar capability is limited to 300 kms. That seems too short for such a large air-superiority fighter, it’s most likely around 400 km similar to F-22 or Su-57 otherwise it will be in a major disadvantage against something like an F-22 (or Su-57 but such a confrontation is unlikely).

Defence Decode Even with that dihedral canard it can still achieve an RCS beyond the 0.1 m2 we calculated in the video right. It’s very hard to precisely calculate its RCS without more knowledge as far as I know, but sure you may know more.
And about the NEZ, I said it primarily because of the scenario you mentioned with a Rafale vs J-20 confrontation. So to maximise the chance of a kill the Rafale will need to get much closer to a J-20 (60-70 kms). Which would be quite risky against a fighter like J-20 which can detect and even engage Rafale at a much further distance. So, Rafale will have a better kill chance if got that close but J-20 will be able to engage Rafale far more (just confirming if that’s how you meant it).
Well, I never claimed that IAF lied, and I believe my countries airforce as well. But again, if J-20 were using Radar reflectors then won’t that automatically make IAF’s claim kinda unreliable?
Anyway, my intention is not to prove you wrong but to clear my doubts and understanding more.
If possible can you give me some sources/links to something that discusses about the effects on stealth by anhedral and dihedral canard configurations?.

Defence Decode Another question and this may be stupid. Does the canard always has to be in dihedral configuration? Shifting it a 0 degree while in a stealth oriented mission and then switching back to the dihedral configuration when max performance is required is something that can’t be achieved?
Anurag K Menon A no escape zone is the region in which your missile is guaranteed to reach its target and not to guaranteed to get a kill.
And secondly, the target is also very important. A missile with 160 km range means it can hit a target at 160 km in the most ideal scenario, with enough altitude and without any mid way corrections. Against a nimble manoeuvering target it will drastically reduce. Same goes for no escape zone, it varies a lot according to the target. Against a fighter it will be around 60-70 kms ( this is still a ridiculous high number for a NEZ) but a J-20 will always detect a Rafale first and with its longer ranges missile put the Rafale in a disadvantage.
