@@DSR299 The text is in German, and moreover, English is not the native language of the majority of listeners. This reminds me the EU: The British kingdom is no longer a member, the only member where people speak English is Ireland. Ireland is a quite respectable country, but represents a very small proportion of EU citizens. Nevertheless English remains "the" official language of EU, together with German and French.

@@gerardbegni2806 Nevertheless, the Netherlands Bach Society, creates the finest interpretation and sound. I love Bach's music. I wish there could be English closed captions. Then, I could fully understand the beauty of what is being said in these performances.

Einfach wunderbar!

Yes, Bach’s genius is almost incomprehensible. Where did he pick up such wonder of melodic richness all the time? Week after week, a new cantata every Sunday, five seasons, 300 of them, of which 200 remain.

ALL OF THESE CANTATS ARE SUCH MARVEL´S THAT PICKING A FAVORITE WOULD BE LIKE CHOOSING A FAVORITE CHILD. THEY ARE JUST MARVELOUS, BARE IN MIND THAT EACH ONE IN ORDER TO BE FULLY UNDERSTOOD,, REQUIRES MANY REPITITIONS OF LISTENING IN ORDER TO ABSORB THE MUSICAL FORCES AT WORK HERE. BACH IS AN OUTSTANDING MUSICAL FIGURE, AS ARE THE PERFORMERS IN THIS NETHERLANDS BACH SOCIETY. IF ONE CANTATA DOES NOT TOUCH YOU, JUST KEEP REPEATING WITH SOME TIME IN BETWEEN EACH AUDITION UNTIL YOU FINALLY UNDERSTAND, BECAUSE THESE CANTATAS ARE ONE OF THE MOST PRECIOUS GIFTS WHICH HUMANITY HAS RECEIVED FROM THE 18TH CENTURY-

What a grandiose piece, which I have never heard before!
While listening, I couldn't help asking myself what other composer it reminded me, then I found it: Telemann, with his excellent mastery of colorful orchestration. And also Vivaldi, in some ways, for both lyrism and religious compositions. Anyway, a remarkable piece, played by dedicated musicians.

Bach learned to write melodies from Vivaldi, after his music became available to the place Bach was working at the time, he obviously could have taken more knowledge or inspiration from Vivaldi -since we can't know for sure-, but i havent read anyone claiming he learned more than melodies from Vivaldi

Bach's genius is present and recognizable from the first to the last note of the Trauer Ode.
In the last choir, Bach's idea of making the choir sing in unison when the words "Sie ist der Tugend Eigentum" etc. are said, is absolutely brilliant. Those are the words "we would like to read", as is sung before. The perfect agreement of all of us is translated into Bach music with unison. Chills!

Parmi les solistes tous excellents, je note particulièrement l'interprétation remarquable de Luciana Mancini de cet extraordinaire aria d'alto " Wie starb die Heldin so vergnügt! " . It is hard to believe but under the direction of Vaclav Luks and Shunske Sato the NBS is even growing in dynamics, phrasing, expression and care for detail. This is a very deep and emotional performance. In the unsurpassed aria 'Wie starb die Heldin so vergnügt!' the tones of the lutes fall like tears fall from the soul and one feels how sad and 'laborious' it is to die and to let go. Sterven is een werkwoord..

I found this Cantata quite different from those I am used to hear (perhaps due to my ignorance). Indeed, a wonderful one in its music. As to Netherlands Bach Society, I'll never get how their choirs can perform with such an amazing sonority with so little number of persons. Outstanding execution!

It is different because it is a secular cantata, therefore it is not liturgical music and does not contain, for example, Lutheran chorales. Although it is a funeral cantata, it did not accompany any rite but was written for a civil commemoration for the death of Christiane Eberhardine, formally Queen of Poland but who was never enthroned because she refused to convert from Lutheranism to Catholicism. The style is typical of these works, for example the first chorus is essentially a large funeral march of the "French" style (in dotted rhythm), the recitatives are strongly characterized in dramatic style (with extended declamatory passages tending towards the arioso) and the arias include parts for obbligato instruments and have a character that is all in all quite "operatic" even if it is very elaborate music and serious in tone (given the subject). Even the final chorus, in the form of a rondo, although rather severe in thone is reminiscent of the concluding choruses of certain baroque melodrams where the moral of the story is affirmed. In this case there is no moral but there are the only vey vague religious references in the entire cantata.

Nein, sie ist nicht Sara Mingardo. Sie ist Lucia Mancini. Es ist nicht fair, jemanden als "die jüngere Version von" zu bezeichnen. Damit tut man zwei Künstlerinnen Unrecht.

This was an absolute joy to listen to! There's usually no point to highlight anyone in such great music by musicians that are among the best, but sometimes i guess we do in the nature of baroque art, because the "Wie starb die Heldin so vergnugt!" along with it's recitative is to me one of the most beautiful not only soprano, but vocal performances I've heard in a while and it was quite inspiring

20:57 - this followed the sermon in the funeral service. After the sermon used words to show the importance of the electress this piece put it to music. This is a very meaningful and technically tough piece.
Today it is good for cleaning out the sinuses.

Another exquisite performance of a Bach masterpiece by the NBS. I particularly love the rendition of "Wie starb die Heldin so vergnugt" by alto Luciana Mancini and this brings up a particular question for me. Why is there a preference in period Baroque performances for male countertenors over female altos? Is it just a matter of availability? I don't mean to denigrate the many excellent countertenors deployed by the NBS and other groups but I can't be the only one who prefers female altos. In addition to retaining a sex balance in the four ranges SATB the low female voice has a kind of dark richness that comes out especially in solo numbers that male countertenors cannot match. Can anyone enlighten me on this trend?

Let, Princess, another ray descend from the starry vault of Jerusalem and look with how many gushes of tear we sorround your monument.
Your Saxony, your dismay Meissen stand motionless in front of your royal grave. The eyes weep, the tongue screams: my pain is indescribable! Here cry Augustus, the prince and the country, the nobility groans, the citizen brings mourning, how the people mourned you as soon as they learned your destiny!
Be quiet, be quiet, sweet strings! There is no sound that could express the sadness of our nation in the face of the death (painful word!) of its beloved mother.
May the flickering sound of the bells arouse the fear in our afflicted souls with its resonant bronze and penetrate us in our marrow and in our blood. Oh, if only this anguished sound that rumbles every day in our ears could bear witness of our pain to the whole of Europe!
With what serenity our heroine died! How bravely fought her spirit, when it stopped the arm of the death before it conquered her chest.
Her life showed the art of dying as a constant practice; it was therefore not possible for her to turn pale in front of death. Ah, blessed is the great spirit of him who rise above nature, who in front of the grave and the coffin doesn't tremble, when his Creator calls him to Himself.
In you, great woman model, in you, sublime queen, in you, guardian of the faith, we have contemplated this greatness of mind.
The eternal abode of sapphire takes away, princess, your serene gaze from our mediocrity and extinguishes the corrupt image of the world. The shining light of a hundred suns that makes our day a midnight and trasforms our sun in darkness sorrounded your transfigured face.
How wonderful is it? You deserve it. You, model of all the queens! You deserved all the ornaments that now transfigure your face. Therefore you bring, in front of the throne of the Lamb, instead of the vanity of purple a robe of pure as a pearl innocence and mock the abbandoned crown. To the banks of the Vistula and where flow the Dniester and the Warta, to the mouths of the Elbe and the Mulde, cities and countries celebrate you. Your Torgau dresses in mourning, your Pretzsch is without strenght, prostrate and motionless for having lost you it lost the delight of its eyes.
No, princess, you don't die, we know what you mean for us. Posterity will not forget you until this world collapses. Poets, wright! We want to read: "She has been the embodiment of the virtues, the joy and the boast of her subjects, the glory of all the queens.".

My favourite Bach-Cantata (or Bach-piece) in a terrific version. Especially the ending-choir with its unison-parts is rousing and generates goose-bumps. Like Gardiners recording it also has the right tempo. Sara Mingardo became younger? Oh no, its Luciana Mancini! Could be Mingardo's daughter...and also her voice is similar. A real belladonna.
