It's so heartwarming to know that there's a team of divers swimming at the bottom of the ocean, scouring the sea floor - looking for the perfect shell for a little octo to be its perfect home.
Made me think of a day in 1961, a coral beach on Guam. Came on a small Octo (maybe 12 to 14" tip to tip. The tide was going out and it was "stranded" in a small water filled depression. (Now it may well have known what it was doing but...) Not wanting it to to be stranded high and dry I approached from opposite the closest receding water. And it did (as I hoped) retreat the right direction to the deeper water. It was there that same day, I found in another "depression" a small glass float (from a fishing net) that I had in my home Fish pond for over 50 years. In 2012 I pulled it out to clean algae off of it and slippery as it was, I dropped it - yep - on stone and it broke. I still have the memory of a beach where I would go for solitude, between Merizo and Inarahan, and (maybe) saving a young octopus.
@@maximuffin6395 It was, but it was also putting the lil octopus in danger. Plastic isn't a natural part of its environment. The shell will likely protect the octopus much better.

@@azjla69 He didn't invade its space. While I agree the octopus was fine in the cup he didn't force it to go into a different shell, he just gave it extra options, one of which it eventually picked.
@Jenny clark No. Insects don't think and feel (maybe bees and ants do but thre rest don't), most mollusks don't think and feel, fish might not be able to think and feel and jelly fish definatly don't think and feel.
@Jenny clark Extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence. We have no reason to believe that brains as simple as that of insects can feel anything or formulate a thought rather then acting instinctually. Sure, maybe they can learn but even AIs can do that (go look up machine learning), for it to think it needs to come up with an idea that isn't based on instinct. If they learn fast enough, we can pressume they must be able to do this to some extent. If they find a unique solution to a problem they have never faced before then they can obviously do it. We know Octopuses can formulate thoughts from observing them, they can quickly learn to open twistable jars after being left alone with them, with the coconut Octopus (the Octopus in this video) one only needs to see a few images of the plastic shelters they sometimes use to see how incredibly adaptable they are. But insects can't do this (except like I said maybe bees, ants and a very small handful of other species), they're is no strong evidence they are capable of quick learning or thinking creatively, and if you think have evidence please show it to me. As for feeling, no strong evidence that fish can feel pain, infact most research has shown that its unlikely they do. Having and instinctual reaction to damage is different from feeling pain, if I stab and earth worm it wriggles and writhes not because it feels pain, but because that is how they instinctually react to damage, the wriggle away from it. If a pin is in it the earthworm is obviously incapable of wriggling away from it, so it justs wriggles around and bends, instinctively trying to get away from the damaging object but being unable to. For the record I have never stabed and earthworm in my entire life, and it has been years since I've purposely killed a fly, so I don't say these things to make myself feel less guilty.
For the octopus, that cup was the spacious home of the future, made from space-age materials. But the octopus had enough of the stressful city life , what with giant hands pestering it constantly, and decided move to a bijou rustic shell in the countryside, 1 metre away.
This makes me feel simultaneously super proud of humanity and melancholy at the same time. The divers are great people and do their best to fix ecological hiccups from littering into the ocean with our trash.
I really don't understand the whining in the comment section (no offense). Why would you feel sad unless you weren't already aware that the sea is full of trash and accepted the reality of it? You knew that already, and you thought it all posed a danger. This video teaches us that despite all the careless littering, at least it doesn't all have a negative impact like we thought, some is actually taken benefit of. Seeing this made me happy. There's no reason for the video to suggest that it's wrong to take advantage of a situation that's usually bad, as being able to do so is an amazing accomplishment, turning bad to good. This video made me more hopeful of the life in the sea, maybe it's not really as bad as I thought. Edit: Don't get me wrong, I'd never litter and nothing justifies it, I'm just very aware of the state in the sea. This however is an example of life giving you lemons and you making lemonade. It's a good thing, given that we can't easily better the sad state of the sea.

Any type of octopus is awesome. I once drew an octopus in a space suit while doodling around and it turned out pretty cool.
@@citoyennedmonde Where?
Only thing I know called Cuphead is a game who isn't about octopuses.
What about the octopus in finding dory?
The octopus is actually trying out it's weight rather than its size. It always extends out only one tentacle to see if it can move it around good enough with just one.
Yep these shells all looked too big for this one.
@@PallSigurdsson Well, the octopus definitely knew the plastic cup was LIGHT and can take a sizable amount of abuse for what it's made of.

@@Caterpillartears haha, no need to get defensive man
I love how, instead of touching the octopus and using force, they let nature do its thing and let it find a new home with a little help.
I am thinking about the scene in Moana
that would require a lot of patience and dedication, something only 0.001% of us would have, I'm not one of them

He didn't invade its space. While I agree the octopus was fine in the cup he didn't force it to go into a different shell, he just gave it extra options, one of which it eventually picked.
@Jenny clark
No. Insects don't think and feel (maybe bees and ants do but thre rest don't), most mollusks don't think and feel, fish might not be able to think and feel and jelly fish definatly don't think and feel.
@Jenny clark
Extraordinary claims need extraordinary evidence.

@@calculator1841 ....Oh my..please tell me you're kidding
Matthew Gentile....Then why didn't they remove the cup?
