      100%, typical Americans completely missing the point 😂 always making everything about money and turning everything into a consumerist opportunity. By definition it’s impossible to fake it till you make it, you’re either born into it or you’re not. People imitating it can be easily spotted a MILE away lmao, there’s a 100 other things involved that are more important than just the way you dress. Tbh dressing to appear ‘expensive’ is the more obviously cheap thing to do, ironically.

    The people I know with old money, you’d never guess it. They wear clean, conservative clothing they mend and keep forever, do their own chores, travel like middle class. They do not bring attention to themselves. Under the radar. Always. And they never mention money or bills. Ever.

    • @andreacigala2709
      @andreacigala2709 ปีที่แล้ว +136

      The people I know with old money yes, look understated when they travel as not to catch attention and don't talk about money, but they absolutely don't mend their clothes or have never done any chores. Even as exchange students in foreign countries (I was in Paris and Oxford), they would hire cleaners for their student's apartments and eat at restaurants daily so they wouldn't have to wash a plate.

      @@andreacigala2709 It depends on the level of money. Money can be old without there being an enormous amount of it (relatively speaking). You can have generations losing quite a bit of money before someone competent with money (or at least frugal) comes along in the family line. The wealth might also get split up between siblings further decreasing it.
      And while it is a meme for out-of-touch rich people to talk to poor people like the poor people are too stupid to know how to use money, there is truth when they say rich people mostly prioritize investment over material goods and services.
      Someone who doesn't work and lives comfortably without doing so (and always will be if expenses are kept minimal) but not enormously rich is who I imagine the OP is talking about when it comes to doing their own chores.

    "Old money" literally means that the family has been rich for a long time but that their wealth came from generations ago. Before fast fashion, people who were 'old money' wouldn't wear brand new or flashy garments. Instead opting for clean and classic. 'new money' is more what you see today, flashy popular brands and items, and spending a lot on things.
    Old money is more investing in good, timeless attire while new money is what's popular.
    Hope this cleared up confusion for some people.

    • @Discordia5
      @Discordia5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      This is a perfect explanation, it should have more upvotes. The two might even shop from the same shops, but new money will want others to know, using the items like status symbols. In my experience, wealthy people are still concerned with getting good value for their money at every opportunity. Otherwise, they would go broke in a few years like retired sports players. They'd rather spend their cash on investments or travel, and buy 90% of their clothes at normal stores on sale. When they splurge, it's usually on timeless pieces that don't look flashy/trendy.

    • @bmona7550
      @bmona7550 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@Discordia5 True, the definition of new money and old money is basically how long the wealth has been in their family. Old money tend to have class due to upbringing and reputation. Some new money may also try to have that class. Not all are attention seekers. The attitude here is class and it is not necessarily because they are from old money. Even a middle class or working family can have class. My mom for instance likes flashy clothing as she is a self made professional who escaped poverty through hard work. I myself prefer simple clothing and timeless looks as much as possible. One can see this difference more with well to do middle class and the working class. The well to do often focus on education when acquiring wealth while the working class can barely afford that so many focus on looking more affluent than they are. Trying to look expensive is not really bad, it's an expected preference when you have limited opportunities.

      Not “literally”

    • @notanotherone5564
      @notanotherone5564 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Spot on. But it’s not just “wealth”, it’s about power and influence within their respective community. Their last name is part of their brand. Their wealth is typically a byproduct of the “brand loyalty” their peers endear to them. They wouldn’t apply to Harvard, the university would reach out to their family years prior to establishing an “understanding” with the family.
      For example, “The Rockefellers” great great grandchildren are afforded opportunities for higher education, position, and political power that wouldn’t be afforded to someone of similar wealth.. who doesn’t brandish the last name.
      The old money aesthetic is simple and plain because they’ll never have to prove anything. They’ll pair $60 khakis with a $150 merino wool sweater… and a $75,000 bracelet from their family jeweler, slim, and completely unbranded. Only other “old money” individuals would recognize it’s value. It would be completely unrecognizable to a “commoner”.
      Stealth Wealth is apart of their lifestyle.

    • @lilybethblue
      @lilybethblue ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@notanotherone5564 btw, may I know did you ever meet an old rich? Because your perception is completely wrong. Old rich have their own clothing line and tailor made clothes that's why you can't see logos in it. They paid millions for their clothes, jewelries, and even custom made shoes only for them. Other major brands they don't invest are considered rivals so they don't wear them. NOT BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE SIMPLE. How can you say their plane? Have you been to their exclusive party? Cause they party anytime they want and you will be suprised to see how they spend. 😂 Old riches are not CEO's like Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and other famous billionare, these old riches aren't busy as you think, they are usually in the golf course and travelling. They are low key investors and stockholders so they could have fun without working. They funded apple, elon musk's, etc major companies. You know why they are low key? Because their endless wealth was earned in a horrible way. They are usually from the long line of royal officials and politician (corruption), colonialism officers, capitalist & monopolization, land grabbers, drug/slavery syndicates, mining and resources exploitation, war and depression exploitation. Think about it, how could their great great grandpa could earned endless wealth in the past? I'll leave it to you mydear. Now if you know that's how your granpa earned the clan's wealth. Do you think it's okay to flaunt your wealth on social media? So that is why new money are confident cause they earned it themselves.

  • @pinkdiamonds9137
    @pinkdiamonds9137 ปีที่แล้ว +408

    The look and lifestyle of “Old Money” is actually much more about class, poise and value in everything you do, rather than net worth. I know several families who come from “old money” and have many things like property and heirlooms handed down to them but they themselves work regular jobs and aren’t all that ‘rich’. But they truly value the things they have and take care of them, pass them on and have so much class, etiquette and sophistication. I also know plenty of wealthy people who are, for lack of a better word, trashy, vulgar, tacky and ostentatious. I think real wealth is how you utilise what you have, how you value yourself as well as others and conduct yourself. There are many ‘poor’ people with mountains more class and sophistication than obscenely rich people.

    Basically, old money is to dress in classic and timeless aesthetic, whereas new money is to dress in a more trendy and social media rich idea way. Old money ppl are used to it and they have a reputation to maintain. They can dress like new money ppl too but they tend to prefer the classic and timeless fashion, especially for important events. Vice versa. That was what I was told. It's not this or that but more of which one do you adhere to the most. Issa tendency, not a fixed rule. Every family have their own rules, preferences, and tradition.
    Edit: Some people in the replies have understandibly misunderstood my comment. My comment is referring to the old money vs the new money aesthetic but I didn't include the word "aesthetic" nor "fashion" to clarify it, hence the confusion. that’s really not the definition of old and new money though. old money is wealth that’s been passed down throughout multiple generations and will most likely never leave the family. new money is wealth that may have been just acquired in the current generation or the one previous. those terms really have nothing to do with the way you dress or act in my opinion.

    Anyone who puts rich people in different categories of lifestyle based on how long those riches have been running in that family knows nothing about rich people. Rich people do what they want and some may keep traditions, old or new to the lifestyle, the inverse is also true.
    Because idiots hate being wrong I must edit this. People who have had money for longer will of course have had an access to great education their whole life and they will have grown in a certain way with some manners but the bottom line is their legacy doesn’t define their life style, they may stick to tradition or they may not, they are rich, they do what they wish.

He also often went on offshore fishing trips with them. After their fishing trips, my husband would often hang out at the marina and dock bars with them, but based on their clothes, you would never know how much money they had. Another funny story about them….we live in Maryland, so it gets pretty cold here in the winters. Once my husband and I went to the father’s house outside of Ocean City Maryland. He had these huge palm trees surrounding his pool. Dozens of them, and very tall and mature as well. I asked him “how do you keep your palm trees alive year round in our climate?” He laughed and said “I don’t! I just buy new ones every year.” I’ll never forget that. As an Englishwoman who comes from old money, here’s my essay:
    (I live with the side that currently isn’t rich, but my dad side very much is) it looks similar but it’s also very different. It’s the things like having silver knives and forks instead of stainless steel ones (they’ve been passed down, why would we buy new ones), it’s the massive portraits of my ancestors in my stair well (they’re worthless if we sold them because no one would buy a very average portrait of someone not in their family, and massive silver candle sticks and wine holders which have also been passed down.
    (And not me personally:..) It’s huge houses and money troubles and social climbing, having one house in the Home Counties and another in Kensington and Chelsea in London, it’s random worthless titles and large dinners, its having au pairs raise the kids and be closer to the children than their own parents, it’s white blonde woman who all have the same plastic surgeon, it’s long drinks parties where you have the same stilted conversation 17 times with different people, its asking anyone with the same accent as you ‘what school did you go to” and expecting to know the name of where they say, since there’s a few main private schools, same with where do you ski (there’s a few resorts everybody goes to), it’s gillets and schoffels, linen shirts and chinos, shooting, hunting, getting blooded, sailing, skiing, wine snobbery, and very rarely the brand which new wealthy people love. Not many people wear anything branded like Gucci or Versace as it’s viewed as very tacky.
    It’s insane. I don’t live in it most of the time, (Since I live in my mother’s side) but when I visit that world it’s mad.
    (Edit: ppl seem to be getting a bit confused in the replies but thank you sm for all the nice comments too. Kinda funny and very classic American how they think being generationally rich is an ‘aesthetic’ you can achieve. If you think it’s a clothing trend you can learn and adopt, you’ve already missed the point completely 🤦‍♀️ you can’t acquire all the necessary components, or learn all the traits, if you weren’t raised with it. old money don't spend time perusing tiktok for things to wear, they have personal shopper, or at the very least, some boutiques would send them curated collections to pick from. also they really can't stand being in a crowd with "common people" so they have their own circles to hang out with, and this also influence the way they dress.

    Old money appears as an elegant and classy aesthetic whereas new money seems greatly absorbed by the influence of the internet and all the “new toys.”

    Actually real rich people don’t put that much effort into how they dress because they don’t need to prove to anyone they’re richer, because they know they are. People who want to appear wealthy dress like this.

    Old money doesn't shout out its presence. It's usually subtle. The cut of the clothes and the material are always high quality. The over-stylized obvious examples from Tik Tok look like someone trying to dress up like a Gossip Girl character for Halloween.

    I don't know about old money or new money but I love to dress classy and elegance not to show off the branded clothings. after some searches I figured that my styles were actually old money which is from 80's to 90's to up till now its trending

    my side of the family is what people called "Old Money".
    You don't spot anyone wear a big brand like Gucci, LV or something who got a very big brand names tattoo-ing their things, except a few like Birkin bag who's good for investment.
    i went to school with many people that come from this generational wealth, and we received the same amount of education, but different enviroment and different 'tips' inside the family about how to maintain this wealth and how to be a clpse-knitted family, and how to respect other people regardless of whatever you have. All of us (at least people i associate with most of the school time) didn't even said any bad words, or cursed or did something shameless and we are always polite wherever you go, whoever you meet abd whenever it is. and most of us go to Uni after High School. very rarely to not continue to pursuing our education. Education is a must, at least in my family it is.

    I mean style variety exist in many groups of people. People can dress extravagantly or moderately, some flashy, some are reserved. The style above average across more as yuppie preppy sort of aesthetic.
