      As far as I know the 428 was just a Ford 390 with a longer stroke. My brother had a 428 and it did have better pistons and probably other stuff to stand up to the higher revs and power output, but it was basically a 390 (although with low rise dual 4 barrel carburetors) - the same engine in the station wagon with a single dual barrel carburetor. The rocker arms were on a rocker shaft, like the 390, while the 429 and 351 Cleveland had canted valve trains that allowed the engines to breath better.

      Your off - the 428 was a 406 bore
      And a 410 stoke...
      A 1966 410 Merc will have the 428 crank's external weight behind the harmonic balancer.
      A 390 will not. A quick way to tell externally. 410 and 428 are external balance and require the front weight and the correct flywheel.
      The also others that can screw you , uhaul motors...
      But the 4o6 is the god father block of the 427fe. Motor - the 406 was Ford’s response. It wasn’t a big change from the 390, just a 0.080-inch-larger bore, with thicker walls in the engine block casting. Compression went from 10.6:1 to 10.9, exhaust valves got slightly larger, and to take the extra stress, piston and connecting rods were strengthened. Carbs and camshaft, crank and the dual exhaust stayed the same. The three-carburetor setup had become available as a dealer-installed option in 1961...
      Wish to build a bass ass 410 - use a 360/390 block, 350 olds 69 hi pro flattop pistons and long rods from a in line 6cly Ford with after market rod bolts.... the rods will be a big weakness - but with a .ooo7 hone that piston fits very well... Great street motor!

      The 427 had a bigger bore 4.250 if I recall, the 427 side oiler motor had cross bolted main caps and larger dia head bolts...
      All FE blocks shared basic bore centers... However, unlike a Chev. Not all parts will exchange as a direct bolt.

With added ceramic- coated exhaust headers and a change to a dual quad set up and an aluminum intake (originally available on the '67 428 interceptor), it was up to 420+ hp! Ford definitely gave us a wink and fibbed on the h.p. capability of this legendary beast to pull the wool on the insurance company bean counters!

    Anyone that believes the 335hp rating for the Super Cobra Jet is living in another world. That is probably one of the most underrated engines in that era. I wonder if it had anything to do with keeping insurance costs down. Anyway, my first Mach One was a 69 390 4sp in Acapulco Blue. I could beat most SS 396 Chevelles but never raced a 396 Camaro. My second one was identical to this one except it was red. It was the pace car at the old Fairgrounds Speedway in Salt Lake City. Super Cobra Jet 4:30 gears with the C-6. It passed everything but a gas station. Man, I wish I had that car back.

      I've seen a 428CJ dyno at 406. A 428SCJ actually doesn't have any more power. They use the same intake, heads, carbs, exhaust, etc. If anything, an SCJ should make a tiny bit less HP because it used heavier rods but they were built to withstand more punishment. They also came with an oil cooler and being more rare, they are worth more.

      I put a 428 out of a K.C. 1966 Ford Police car in my 68 Ford Ranger. From its performance with a C-6 and 3:50 gears , I always guessed it to be around 500 H.P. I could ease it up to 35 or 40 in first , then open the 4v as I shifted to 2nd gear and set the truck sideways on good pavement.

    • @tomwolak3362
      @tomwolak3362 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah insurance reasons were why it was rated at a paltry 335. More like 425. Same reason the boss cars were rated so low. Boss 302 was 290 when it really put out 385 in a small block.Boss 429 was rated at 375 when it was dyno'd at 500+.

    • @BC08
      @BC08 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      CareerFireman Wouldn’t even make 365 HP as it sits in the car. 365 HP was “gross HP”, not “net”.
      Another fun fact, the 426 street Hemi didn’t make anything over it was rated at either, as it sat in the car. If Made 480 HP at the crank with no exhaust, no accessories and no air air filter, add those and you have 425 HP.
      Why do people have this need to ignorantly perpetuate myths about 60s cars?

    • @BC08

      That ill fitting trunk spoiler on the camaro looks so shotty. They always reminded me of a teenagers car who had went to a junkyard and yanked one off any random car knowing it wouldn't fit and bolted it on just to make it look cool.

      Same thing by me. At the car shows it's rare for me to see the mustang but I always end up seeing a couple camaros. Because of this alone I'm thinking about redoing the 69 mach 1 sitting at the shop instead of the 69 maro. I've owned 3 maros and now a procharged ws6 so guess I'm more of a gm guy so this would be a big switch for me haha

I always preferred Trans Am's to Camaro's on the GM side but out of the Camaro and Mustang in this video i'd go with the Mustang ,love that Camaro SS though . Nothing wrong with that Camaro whatsoever . But i'll take that 69 Mustang Mach with the Cobra Jet . Great video of 2 great rides.

    Mustang Mach 1 hands down! The Camaro styling was old and stubby by then and the Mach 1 was sleek and beautiful and the best interior for decades! The numbers don't lie either what America thought because 80k Mach 1 sold and almost half of them with 428 power. 300 some 4 speed 396 Camaros with 375 hp.
    The Mach 1 was 400 hp+ with a minor tune. Just like the GM and Mopar big blocks.

    I had to chuckle when I saw this video. As a teen In the mid '70s I had a '69 SS 396 (L78) Camaro, it was even the same color as the one in the video, while one of my best friends had a '69 Mach 1 428 CJ, red with a shaker hood. Both were 4 speeds with a Hurst T, but otherwise the CJ was stock. My SS had a full cam, headers, 4.11 posi, and a load of other hot rod goodies. I came from a Chevy family, he was a Ford fanatic, and we had friends in the Mopar tribe and even one with a '69 AMX 390. Although we all used to rag on each other, in reality we all appreciated sweet examples of Detroit iron no matter who made it even if we didn't always want to admit it.
    Due to their different DNA, my SS and his CJ had different personalities aside from the way they were modded (or not). My SS was wound much tighter than his CJ due to its hot rod goodies and gearing, which was good and bad. Being built for the 1/4 mile, it was quicker off the line than that stock CJ, but it likely had less top end and was more temperamental and thus harder to live with on a day to day basis. That lumpy cammed rat motor sure sounded sweet, though. The 396 had much more room to work under the hood than the 428 'Stang due to the difference in shock tower placement. Under hood maintenance such as changing plugs, which had to be done far more frequently in those days, was laughably easier on my SS than his CJ.
    We sometimes swapped cars on cruise night, and being almost completely stock and not as tightly wound his CJ was better behaved and ran cooler than my SS. Heat was always an issue with higher compression and more radical cam, and was much harder to manage with the equipment we had available back then. In fact, on hot summer nights on the strip I'd make just an occasional pass in the SS then park it and watch the parade go by. Being stock, his CJ wasn't so affected.
    I preferred the seating position in my Camaro over the Mustang, where the driver sat lower in the car. I'm 6'2", but it was still more challenging to see over the dash and long nose of that Mustang especially with the shaker. Visibility to the rear wasn't great in either, but the Mustang's roof line, rear window slant (with slats), and lower seating position created bigger blind spots. The more upright interior of the Camaro vs the swoopier Mustang made the interior feel lighter, roomier, and easier to get in and out of the front and especially back seats.
    In general, they each have/had pros and cons and the SS is definitely my sentimental favorite, but I'd take either one of them in a heartbeat.

    The Laugh at the end says it all... "We're not making the call!" I'm a Ford guy, but we ALL have nothing but respect for the 396, and it probably was the better performance potential between the two. The Mustang's 428 probably felt a bit better off the line due to some more torque, but it probably comes down to who could shift better... I love both cars.

I love both the first and second gen Camaro's... particularly a 69 ZL1 Camaro or a 67 or 70 1/2 Z28. Both the Chevy 302 and LT1 350 were absolute screamers for small block V8s.
