    Awesome muscle cars in that era. I thank God everyday for my dream car, a 73 SD-455 Trans am that I had since I was 19 years old, and now I’m 62 and still own it. 🙏

      I actually just watched something about the most underrated muscle cars, and the 73 Trans am was on the list. I couldn’t recall what it looked like so I searched it and it blew me away. Beautiful car. Good for you, pal.

      My Buddy had a 70 TA 400SD balanced and blueprinted 560 hp
      Fastest car I ever rode in and drove! E made it to Myrtle Beach, SC from Charlotte, NC in 2 hours and 15 minutes...often running 165 mph...Amazingly I'm still alive at 63 hahahahahahaha 😆

    In 1969 my Dad bought me a new Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Shaker Hood. The car was a monster. You literally could not floor it from a standing stop without burning rubber and fish tailing all over the place. You really had to know how to handle the car. In 1973 I returned it to my Dad where he sold it for a mere $3,500. Wish I still had it.

    I always loved the 1968-1971 cars, Olds 442, Chevelle, Corvette Stingray, Camaro's, The chargers, all of them were beautifully created

      I bought a ‘69 Camaro off the showroom floor in Dayton, Ohio. I wish I still had it. My brother introduced it to a tree. He was ok, but...... Daytona Chargers are great.

    I grew up in that era. Most wonderful time. I was into sports cars, like my Datsun 200. Dad had a 64-1/2 Plymouth Barracuda. Bare bones, no A/C, no radio but fast. Friend had a GTO, frighteningly fast. If I could go back to those days, I would buy a few of those cars off the showroom and hide them until 2020.

    Memories...I turned 18 in 1969...my first car was a ‘65 Comet with a straight 6 that I seem to recall was unable to make it to 60 mph.

    Am from the Netherlands and i drove a golf gti 16v , now i dont drive anymore cause i have Ms , but since i watch these episodes , man i love those v8's . :-)

    Dang, I miss those era of cars! I'm a die hard Mopar fan and am not surprised to see 5 out of 10 being Mopars! One of my favorites is the 67 Baracuda with the 340. With slightly higher gears I could beat almost any big blocks out on Woodward Ave, yes, THAT Woodward Ave in Royal Oak, Michigan.

      It seems mopar was to crazy for the era and was a racing brand more than car brand. Nevertheless the 426 hemi could make a legitimate claim to greatest racing engine ever with the only thing it hasn’t won in being Indy car or formula 1

      @@averymacleod6199 if the Hemi Cuda had 3.23 gears it could easily do 160. The winged cars with the aerodynamics we're doing over 200.

      @@GrantOakes I wouldn’t doubt it for a second. Hell there was even a prototype can am racer with a hemi in 1965 built for Richard petty before he went drag racing. It even posted a win or two but because of 90 inch wheel base it was nearly impossible to drive if your ever bored check it out it rather interesting

    Certainly a list of the fastest day one cars of 1969 but I rarely saw those as the day two mods were always quickly installed. :)

      I'm rebuilding a '69 Torino - and that is exactly what I am going for. I'm trying to make it, not what it was when it rolled off the line in '69, but what it would have been in '72 after someone had spent 3 years making it faster. Not quite stock, but not a typical restomod, slammed to the ground with a Coyote motor and 20 inch rims with low profile tires. t's going to have meaty tires and a fair amount of rake. It's a muscle car goddammit, not a rice burner.
      The guy who is rebuilding the motor for me tells me I should expect single digit mpg, so maybe I should have gone with the Coyote. Naaaah.

    I still have my dads 695&0 GTX , it has 59,624 original miles. He bought it when he got back from Vietnam. I got it in 85 when he died. I was on leave from Lebanon,.

    Ya missed the 69 Dart GTS with the 440.....12.7 seconds on skinny rubber @ 112 MPH.
    They made more of these than the L88 Vette.

      Nobody remembers the Dart my friend. Great car, not a big enough fan base behind it. The GTS 440s were simply the nastiest and baddest Darts ever, I'd take one instead of a Hemi for sure

      In 1975 I had a 1969 Dodge Super Bee Coronet with the 383 Magnum with the 4 speed Qball shifter. I bought in for $800 in very good condition.

    My dream car was/is a 69 Super Bee, 4-speed, 383 Magnum. Yeah, I bought it when I was 23 and we're still tearing up the roads 53 years later.

    All great cars, my favorite was my 69 GTX ,440 Magnum! It not only looked fast and the 150 speedometer showed its incredible top end. The thought of buying a muscle car for 3,900. Reminds me why we say (the good old days). Thanks for the great video!

    I'm a Ford guy. And I can say that back in 69-71 Mopars had the best selection of muscle cars. Anything big block Mopar was deadly. Even there GTS darts were stout running machines. GM also had an array of cars to pick from. Ford on the other hand had a small handful. And Mercury only had a couple big block muscle cars. Fords handicap was shock towers. Most guys avoided the Fords because it was a major project to install a big block into those shock towered cars. The cars that did not have shock towers were big heavy aircraft carrier sized boats. So the big blocks in those cars was kinda cancelled out because of the weight of the cars. That was Fords biggest error in the street car wars. Most young people had low paying jobs back then. And when you consider the fact you could buy a 6 cylinder Camaro for next to nothing. And then buy a big block rat motor for $100 dollars. You just needed an engine hoist to build a fast street machine. No cutting or welding to fit the motor in the car. That was the main reason the Camaro became the most common hot rod in America. The Nova also became popular when in 1968 the Nova was factory built without shock towers like the earlier Nova's had. Overall though the AC Cobra kicked all there azz'es off the assembly line. If was never a factory Ford release. But Shelby made it Ford Powered. And thus became a Ford Powered rat and HEMI killer on the street and road course. But only a handful were ever built. And so it never really became something most every street racer ever worried about. Because chances are you would never run into one on the street to race. I enjoy muscle cars period. There all just bad azz for there own reasons.

      Can we get a graph showing all the big block camaros that were wrapped around a phone pole along the way? You are correct though. Along with the fact that Fords released to the public from factory were hampered by many obstacles from running great ET's. Taller rear end gearing, milder cams, and smaller carbs. Many times lower compression than Chevy and Mopar. Ford tried to keep reliability a thing as well.... Most of the FE's came with valve springs that were too light as well; made for better wear and most likely a little more power from their lower end engines, but weren't sufficient for any cam or carb upgrades where the RPM range will increase a great deal.

      Don't know where you grew up? I grew up in the deep south and there were several 428 powered Torinos knocking round. Traction was the biggest problem, can't use what you can't hook up! Hemi's were awesome, but I only knew of 1 in my area, a GTX. Big block Chevys were bad, if you could keep all 8 connecting rods in the block! Truth is few people could afford the gas in the late 70's and then when the octane level plummeted it was the kiss of death to double digit compression ratios!

      @@bert1450 101 octain! Ah, those were the days! When a guy didn't need a laptop to tune! Ones willingness to skin knuckles and try be creative!! I remember adjusting valves regularly, you had too with a solid lifter! I had a 289 hipo with a trw tp109 cam, headers, duel point distributor! I was a legend in my own mind! The old 67 Comet running peg leg was a hand full! Ran a 71 Chevelle once! Learned my lesson bout not demanding raised hoods, it was a 454, not a cammed up 350! All in fun, and in this case humility!

      I owned a pretty quick Camaro back in the day. It would probably hang with my WRX through a 1/4 with its 4:10 gears but after that it would be all Subaru. You're on point with modern muscle. "Modern" muscle doesn't include the Subie, a quick car but not a fast car compared to anything like the Hellcat

      Don't forget that in 1969 engines were still being rated off a dyno, not from the wheels when bolted into a car. For a current equivalent you can knock of 20-25% off a 1969 HP rating. The HP rating on your Hellcat is a true rating. That's why it is so much faster. I drove a 1968 Camaro SS for many years, but my current Camaro is quicker.

      I tell you what, in 1971 the Boss 351 Mustang was one of the Quickest Cars built in 71, Would take out Many Big Block Mopars and GM,s 383,s 396,s it didn't matter, that Nasty Small Block Cleveland was a Monster off the Showroom Floor.

      @@Rgh71fish Yeah, Those Clevelands made some impressive power, once you fixed up the oiling system issues, Clevelands would turn some crazy rpm,s. But if you didn't address the oiling system, Bearing replacement was necessary, i spun a few rod bearings in my Clevelands also, so did my Brother. We Both ran Clevelands in our Foxbody Mustangs for years.

      @@Rgh71fish Same here, back in the mid to late 90,s Foxbody Mustangs were everywhere, Good Luck trying to find a Clean one nowadays, Same with Cleveland Engines, getting pretty rare, Unless if you're in Australia, i heard there's bunch of em down under, they Manufactured Clevelands down there up until the Early 80,s i believe, or Could've been Late 70,s. My Brother and i Both ran Clevelands for years in our 85 and 86 Mustangs, i switched it up bout 12-14 years ago, went the Stroked BBF route, 521 Stroked BBF, went Low to Mid Nines on 275/60 Drag Radials, in the 1/4 Mile, N/A Pump Gas Engine. I still love the Clevelands, but i Love the 429-460 Big Blocks just a little more. Basically i Love Canted Valve Ford Engines.

    At the age of 19, in 1970, I had a '68 Roadrunner with a 426/ dual fours, four speed, all factory! I can still hear that cross over muffler system! Dad had to sign the loan and he only ask me what engine was in it, and I said " a v8 ". When he got to see the engine, and seen it was a real go fast he said, " I ought to kick your a** , but I noticed He was grinning as he walked away!

      @@markreisen7038 a Thunderbolt would trailer a 500KR. I saw an LS6 and a 4406pk put the same one on the sideline. Stock 500 KRs ran good, but not that good stock.

      My dad had some what of a salvage yard in the 70’s with a Cyclone sitting next to a Ford station wagon both big blocks.He sold them both because he hated big motors, but a six cylinder falcon or chevy2 he held onto.If I only knew then what I know now.

      I worked with a guy that had the 428 Cyclone. He harassed me to take my 340 Dart Swinger to the strip. We both had 4 speeds. First run, he missed second gear so I beat him. Yes, he was faster. He could run in the very high 13’s, just over 100mph. My 300hp Dart turned 14.22 @ 99mph. We were both stock. I had 355:1 suregrip rear driving Goodyear polyglas F70 14’s. Don’t recall what the Merc had. I would eat Mach I’s for lunch. Those were the best of times.

    hard to believe that not one single drag rag tested anything from AMC. Ya'll remember the "The Machine, the Javelin, AMX or the Hurst American? Yeah....me either. I do remember my 69 Mustang Cobra Jet with the drag pac. Spanked my fair share of Hemi's and Bow Ties with that thing both on the street and the strip. Those were the days.       Yeah it is hard to believe because I remember in 69 amc had a s/s amx that would destroy this list only 52 made. But ran 9s. On another note the tires back then were the worst enemy of the cars lol

    Those are all beautiful cars , my suggestion for first place would be the 69 ZL 1 vette , I believe it was Hotrod mag who wrote the article saying that press boys were getting 10/11 second 1/4 miles outta drive . Fell in love with that car right then !

    my cousin was dating a guy with a 68 RR 383 4spd so my aunt and uncle got a RR 383 auto for her to drive to college, shortly after my cousin eloped and married the boyfriend much to my aunt and uncles displeasure. My aunt kept the RR for going to work. The only Dearborn Fordson HS teacher driving one, the librarian no less. Made a couple of trips to Canada with her to visit relatives in that car. She wasn't shy about using the accelerator peddle. I was 10 in 1968 so I was in awe. I guessing the Fordson students were too.

      Friend of mine in 88 had a 68 RR with a 383 just a 4bbl and a 4 speed. His Dad was a huge Mopar nut and had all kinds of gearing that would fit that rear end. Installed a 5.17 which wasn't the steepest they offered, but still. It was a blast from street light to street light in town... 80mph was barely achievable though.... Most of the 4bbl Fords of that time would have floated the valves in a heartbeat with that gearing.

    I would have thought the 69 Camaro Z28 would have made the list with that high rpm aluminum 302. I always heard those were hard to beat back in the day.

      The 302 engine in the Z28 was actually cast iron. Intake manifold was aluminum though. Great little engine but as they say there's no replacement for displacement.

      You are correct. The 302 block was cast iron. Only the intake manifold was aluminum.
      I owned a modded '57 Chevy with a 302 and 4:56 gears.
      Ran it at the 1/8 mile strip in Clarksville, TN every 3rd Friday night.
      50 years later, the car and my health are gone, but those fond memories are still alive and well.

    69’ COPO ZL1 cast iron sleeved aluminum 427 block. 430 hp rating true rating excess of 500 hp. Factory stock 13.16 @110 quarters. (Auto Editors Consumer Guides not from time) Tuned and slicks mid 11s at roughly 120 quarters. (Street Muscle Magazine but not from time). Just because it wasn’t written about back then doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.

    I had a Ranchero Rio Grande with a 351 that I used to do wheelies with.
    I also had a Roadrunner with the 383 4 barrel .

    I owned a 1969 Mercury Cougar 351 engine, Yellow and black vinyl top. Loved that car. Totally it twice, repaired the first time and my folks left the heating element out of it so as to TEACH ME A LESSON. WINTERS IN NJ WERE ROUGH!

    Some of the West Coast based magazines used regular stock cars and often with California emission controls. Many of the East Coast and Detroit based car magazines actual tested factory tuned, blueprinted, ringer cars. The differences were often much more than just the emission control packages.

    My first car In 1968 was a 1966 Chevelle SS 396. My brother bought a new 1969 427, 390 hp Vette. Black on black. So many muscle cars in the 60's.The one I really miss is my 1971 Vette, and my 1988 911 that was in mint cond. So much fun. After having been driving Corvetts and Porsche for 38 yrs. Now I love my 2011 Evo MR. Still having Fun. 👍👍👍 Great video.

    Thank you for using the original times from back in the day. These days it's almost impossible to find a truly stock muscle car to get an accurate time with. Somehow completely "original" cars are all miraculously turning a second or two quicker ET than they did back when they were new. Of course on the other hand some of the factory supplied test cars back then were a little bit breathed-on too. Also seems those Mopars in the list were essentially the same basic cheap Detroit sedan but with a different grill.

      Check out the F.A.S.T. racing series. Modifications allowed are minor with some competitors simply tuning and using a better tire.

      There were actually choices of cams back then that would obliterate all these times, as well as valve spring upgrades alone would net much better on many of these engines... You could float the valves on many Fords back then, from factory. On that note though, Ford just had an RPM limiter called a carb...

      The mopars were the same chassis, all B-Bodies. Coronet's, RR's & Chargers. Those were light and nimbly despite the looks, a Hemi Road Runner would be just be over 3500 pounds even tho the Hemi was the heaviest engine of the bunch.

    Curious as to why the 1969 Camaro ZL1 did not make the list. I looked it up & according to a couple of different videos (1 Blue ZL1 & 1 White ZL1) clicked off a sub par 12 second run. These are all quick cars for their day, there is no doubt in that, just a question of curiosity. Is it perhaps that only 69 were made? & only a handful of the ZL1 'vettes? They were both production cars, albeit extremely expensive ones for their time, literally doubling the cost of a comparably spec'd out BB. Btw: I own a 67 Ford Mustang FB thanks for asking.

      @@alanb3213 The Yenkos were BB and I think all of them were 427s. However, the Yenko Block was Iron, while the ZL1 Block was Aluminum. A BB Iron head weight around 660 - 680lbs, the Aluminum Head version came in at 610lbs while the Aluminum Block version weighed in at around 515lbs. A Small Block Gm was roughly 530lbs.

    It's kind of a bizarre memory, but I still remember seeing many of the late 60's early 70's musclecars sitting at curbs on city streets and in parking lots back in the day being used as commuters, grocery getters and of course weekend stoplight racing. Hemi Cuda's, 454 Chevelles and El Caminos, 427 Impalas, Boss 302 & 429 Mustangs, '69 ram air 4 Trans-Ams, '73 455 Super Duty Trans AMs, and many others. Now these cars are worth so much, I wouldn't want to park one of those on a street today, it would disappear in an instant. In the later 70's, seems a lot of them where just big engine used cars that where well used, beaten up in many cases, and needed some work, being put up for sale. I bought a '71 Pontiac T/A in decent condition with 38,000 miles in 1978 for $4000.

      The ZL1 camaro was the fastest timed stock muscle car. My dad was a drag racer in the 60’s/70’s and said none of the hemis could beat his friends L88 corvette. He said the L88 never lost

    1969.......What a year that was! Everyone had muscle cars. Even Rambler had the Rambler Scrambler. My dad had bought the 69 Charger R/T with a 3.90 posi-track. It was such a great car! We made several trips to the drag strips and collected several trophies. I saw just about every car mentioned here during those trips and I would say that these ratings are spot on. I'm surprised to not see the 69 Camaro, the Hemi Challenger and Cuda among the list. Great video!

    Well all I can tell you is this based on personal experience at the Fremont Calif in 1968 and 1969.
    I had a 427 435 hp Vette. I didn't run side pipes since it was known even then that they cost around 30 hp over the under car exhaust.
    My car was a 4 speed with a 3.36 rear.
    It would go thru the lights at 13.24 at 660p in second gear at 106mph.
    A friend if mine had a 1969 Corvette with exactly the sane driveline except it had aluminium heads and came stock with wider tires. It would run 13.16 at 107.mph also going thru inn 2nd gear at around 6700 rpm.
    I once raced a 1968 Camaro with a crate L88 headers and a 4.11 rear end..that car went thru at 12.32 at 111 mph.
    A stock hemi was no problem since they really didn't start to run till midtrack at which point they could catch us.
    The Boss429s were relatively rare and we never saw one at the track although I street raced one from a 20mph roll on El Camino Real and beat him by a couple of car lengths.
    A stock 428 Cobra Jet was not a threat not even the 8bbl Shelby 500 KRs.
    In 1970 actually late 196o the 70 454 450hp Chevelle appeared. These were difficult to beat.
    Another car hard to beat was the 427 8v Fairlane. They were not common but a few were around.from 1967 and 196o

    In1969 i was racing a yellow 1968 roadrunner 383 , 375 hp. four speed with hurst shifter, hooker headers, 456 locking diff. and 10/32 mickey Thompson and cool can and home made traction bar. 13 flat can,t remember the speed. turning 6500 at the end of the 1/4.

    I'm not sure if it was in Car Craft or Hot Rod but the fastest "muscle car" of the era according to the magazine was the very rare Dodge Dart fitted with the 426 Hemi with a quarter mile time of 11.76 at approximately sea level (probably Pomona track).

    Remember that back then, in the Dodge Coronet world, 440 also referred to a series of models or a trim level. Someone in my neighbourhood has a 66 or maybe a 67 Coronet 440 that actually came stock with a 383.

    I thought the L88 would have been higher but seeing it had taller gears the Hemi's and 440's had the hole shot and the vette just passed them either before or after the end of the quarter mile. Great video, thanks for posting.

    You left out the Talladega Cobra; a Torino Cobrajet with an extended front end that won every stock car race in '69. My brother owned one, with a 4 speed and 3.91 gears. It had several Road Runner kills in the stoplight strip. One of the closest races he had was with a Buick Grand Sport, and probably because he vastly underestimated how quick it was. But my wife's 2015 Mustang GT would blow all of them away without breaking a sweat. Unlike those early cars, the Mustang will do all on the speedometer and quite quickly, even with the convertible top DOWN!

    Nice Really I can't believe my 1969 GTO Ram air 4sp didn't hit that list I was proud owner of one for 5 years. Lined that old Goat up with many of the mentioned never was beaten sadly accused of using NOS . Raised hood for many just 780 spred board Holly. Thank you Guys

    These are all cars i dealt with NEW. I street raced my Plymouth's w/various big blocks. But i also was employed by Chrysler engineering and did development on all our cars and also at Chrysler we did competitive analysis on all manufactures. Man my life was good.

    My brother had a Beautiful 1969 Green with black stripes mark 1 and I had a 69 Corvette with 350 ci 350 hp back then a lot of fun a few years later I got a 70 Silver with black stripes Corvette 350 370hp LT1 Man what I would do to have that car today

    SMH I hate to be so critical but the criteria y'all used to create this list which left out some of the fastest cars of not only that year but of that era ( I'm speaking specifically about the COPO's Shelby's and Yenko's) I think is seriously flawed.

      Yep..the Cobra with 427 was very fast and super light weight and the COPO camaros were rare and were monsters.

    My dear departed friend, Bill Smith, who, as a lifetime bachelor, could afford some beautiful cars. My two favorites were a 1969 427/435hp Vette, LeMans Blue 4spd, and a 1968, or 1969 Hemi Orange Roadrunner.......

    I had SS396 Chevelle with 411 gears and a rock crusher 4 speed trans! Wish I still had it!

    Two Mustangs, two Corvettes, and, what, five Mopars? Wow.
    Today's Dodge Challenger 392 Scat Pack does the quarter in 10.8 @ 131mph. All things considered, these 51-year-old machines hold their own pretty well.

      No it does not .The scat pack is a 392 and it runs high 11s at best .Wtf are you smoking? The red eye hellcat might trap 131 or even higher .No other stock Mopar does that in 2021.

      @@camirocz It appears that you are correct.
      I don't smoke, so it couldn't be that. I could have been, in fact, copulating, although I'm usually very focused in those moments, so I doubt that was a factor. Then again, it was nine months ago. Who knows?
      It's more likely that I simply misread KBB in its numbers on the Challenger line. I was reading too fast. If you've never made so grievous an oversight, hats off to you.
