I am pretty sure it connects your phone as a storage device... the same connection that happens when you plug your phone into a computer. This type of connection connect access all the phone information via bluetooth
Great video, really helpful. We've just got a car with Sync 3 so have downloaded Android Auto (AA) and we are impressed so far. However we do have a query about what happens when the phone loses signal (frequently in rural Scotland). When phone/Google maps loses the cellular connection, AA just disconnects even though we have downloaded Google maps area to use offline. Just reverts to the Sync 3 homepage. We thought it should just seamlessly shift to the offline map then switch back when phone signal picked up again but we have to disconnect cable and plug in phone again when signal resumes to get maps And navigation back. Are we doing something wrong?
The Ford Sync3 shouldn't drop the Android Auto interface if you have lost internet connection. I constantly use AA in Australia with toll tunnels in Brisbane where data & GPS is lost when very deep under the city. AA doesn't have an issue & estimates the cars location based on speed etc which is pretty accurate. Sounds like macelven has a Sync3 / AA bug. Maybe it's the phone? I use a Nexus 6p...
Daniel Martin Thanks Daniel, we managed to solve some of the glitches with a new cable but turns out we also have a slightly loose USB which is being sorted. Apart from this we think the Sync is brilliant and way better than our old sat navs.
AA shouldnt turn off and once you've been to a destination your map should hold the gps location even offline and curaor should still be able to travel back through that now known location
This does not work on 2017 F-150 with Sync 3, connected through bluetooth and/or usb cable. Is there any way to update sync? This makes zero sense, that all of these cars are running the same software and only some will work.
I opted out of the $800 Voice activated navigation but i do have voice activation....so its free not $800, the way i see it the Nav feature of sync 3 is $800
Guess I don't see what all the excitement is about with AA. If you don't have the NAV version of Sync 3 I guess it would have value. My number one issue with this is it completely takes over your phone. At least with mine, the screen locks on the AA page and becomes non-functional. Also, the reverse is true in that AA seams to over ride all of the Sync functions. You have to exit the app to use any other function. As for saving money. I guess it's a matter of how you want to pay. To up my phone plan to unlimited, requires another $60 as I use very little data on my phone. The $800 dollars mentioned is only to have the unit upgraded by a dealer. The option price in a new vehicle is no where near that. Then and finally, I am one who feels Google knows enough about what, where and when I'm doing things as it is. While browsing my Google page I noticed that just about every mile I had driven, every stop, how long has been recorded and available to view. Off with the location service right then and there. If I need it, I'll turn it on. Not that I fear the heavy hand of government but it's just non of their business. The less I use Google, the better I like it.
So, that means without using cable, connecting android phone isn't possible? Well then, why they add bluetooth connection? Expecting to connecting phone to android auto via bluetooth isn't so high...
Grnbaracuda you can still use ur wireless bluetooth connection using the standard sync 3 however you cannot use the android auto app without connect through usb
It is rude to hang up on your Mom :) Thanks for the instructional... At first I was a bit bummed about it not working through bluetooth but connecting via USB cable will keep my phone charged.

Looks good, but don’t buy SYNC fitted in the 2017 Transits! Ford are still installing SYNC 1 as released in 2007 - it’s absolutely hopeless, every function is totally janky.. You’re much better passing up the ‘City Nav Pack’, and spending the same money after purchase on a high-end info/nav and camera package, You’ve been warned.
The problem is that Sync 3 only supports Android Auto on old Android phones!!! For example, I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and the current version of Sync 3 does not support it! Ditto for the brand new Galaxy S8.

Are we doing something wrong?
the android auto only works while connected to the internet which is why I said to be careful if you do not have unlimited date
Cars Unlocked Thanks. This makes sense now.
Awesome vid and many thanks for making and posting this. Just to confirm...can you run WAZE with this ??
Depends on the model of your car and I believe you need to up your software to the most recent update for the waze
I use Waze with my 2017 F-150 Lariat.
This does not work on 2017 F-150 with Sync 3, connected through bluetooth and/or usb cable. Is there any way to update sync? This makes zero sense, that all of these cars are running the same software and only some will work.
Philip Vitale you need to be running current version of sync, go to owner.ford.com and download update to USB drive if your sync is not running 2.2
I opted out of the $800 Voice activated navigation but i do have voice activation....so its free not $800, the way i see it the Nav feature of sync 3 is $800
Work with micro-usb?
Ben Adams either or
Cars Unlocked so works with micro USB?
Ben Adams yes
Thanks for the great walk through! Is it possible to stream u-tube or any other video while the truck is in park?
Brad Callan unfortunately not it does not support video playback
Some other dude proofed that it does.... :S
@@vemelon Proved. Proved is the word you are looking for. 🙈
Pity you have to connect a wire other cars can connect to android auto wirelessly.
surethom I do agree pretty bull shit
So, that means without using cable, connecting android phone isn't possible? Well then, why they add bluetooth connection? Expecting to connecting phone to android auto via bluetooth isn't so high...
Grnbaracuda you can still use ur wireless bluetooth connection using the standard sync 3 however you cannot use the android auto app without connect through usb
I had to plug it in to usb in order to make it work. samsung s7 edge

Se puede instalar Android Auto en modelos Ford Explorer Limited 2013
no es compatible con 2013 explorador
It is rude to hang up on your Mom :) Thanks for the instructional...
At first I was a bit bummed about it not working through bluetooth but connecting via USB cable will keep my phone charged.
so this will not work for 2016 models?
the SYNC 3 is in select 2016 models which vehicle do you have?
Cars Unlocked i have a 2016 Ford Edge Titanium l, but im in the military and stationed in Germany also. its a american car but dont know if being in europe changes anything
thank you so much for your comment and of course your military service. try to download the latest update via wifi and see if the android auto icon comes up when you are all up to date
Cars Unlocked i called ford and they said it hasnt been released to download yet i guess it's just in 2017 models and late 2016 models, but i dont know when it'll be released.
Awesome vid! My friend was actually having trouble with this
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!
fish lens camera weakens the quality
Looks good, but don’t buy SYNC fitted in the 2017 Transits!
Ford are still installing SYNC 1 as released in 2007 - it’s absolutely hopeless, every function is totally janky..
You’re much better passing up the ‘City Nav Pack’, and spending the same money after purchase on a high-end info/nav and camera package,
You’ve been warned.
Nice tutorial. Very helpful.
Fun fact, you don't need data for GPS, as long as you have your maps predownloaded on google maps..
yes thats one way to save the data usage
Works in my 16 ford f150 fx4
The problem is that Sync 3 only supports Android Auto on old Android phones!!! For example, I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and the current version of Sync 3 does not support it! Ditto for the brand new Galaxy S8.
feinstei I have an s8 and it works fine
feinstei What the hell you talking about?? Got an S9 plus and everything works as it should.
not working in slovenia 2017/1
Gorazd Gašparič hopefully it comes to you soon
