The problem I see with building metros in any Tier-2 or Tier-3 city of importance is that a Metro network requires humongous initial capital which is mostly drawn through borrowings. If the city in discussion already suffers from poor urban planning, then pouring such huge capital into metro project will only scarce the resources for other PWD needs, like bus services, roads, pedestrian friendly paths, traffic management etc as Metro becomes the highlight for that city and politicians wants to focus more on that. Even after commencing operation, Metro network still needs huge capital to function at a subsidized price for years to come that will always squeeze city funds. Yes, new avenues for earnings can be made but even that would only work when the footfalls increases. This issue isn't only limited to small cities, Metro isn't the answer to fix Bengaluru poor road conditions or urban planning. If a city can be projected to grow that would need a Metro Network within a decade or two, then Metro Network can be a good idea but rapid building metro projects with little or no vision on is the city's growth and metro's role in its future is just a waste of resource that could have been otherwise used for roads and urban planning.
Initially even Delhi metro had low ridership.. then all the ancillary industries and real estates developed around it and 20-25 yrs later it’s a huge network and so much crowd
@-10REASONS Delhi Metro owes its sustenance, mainly because of the University crowd coming from as far away as Dhola Kuan & Janak puri as they have no other dependable alternative. The horrendous & notorious bus transport is the only other choice. Office goers joined later followed by daily traders running their shops. A Metro needs to be popularised, after the prospective clientele (I mean those who can afford the ride) choose to patronise it. All this needs a thorough study, before the Metro is taken up for a city. Also it can wait a year at the most without profits (not breaking "even"), but not for a decade or more (that means it isn't viable) as someone pointed out above. A city (& its activities) must grow to deserve a Metro.

@@MrPoornakumar well somebody said that. Metro is not in loss. If you have basic knowledge on transit development it is that no matter what, you give public transport within or between places, that places will grow into cities. That's how literally cities come into existence. Their very existence is based on transit. Metro is the best transit currently we have
As an Indori, I agree with the fact that metro surely helps in decongesting traffic and also, developing new areas in the city. But yes, it is also true that metro should be built only in the areas which are subsceptible to heavy traffic. But In India, it is hard to introduce alternate public transport medium such as trams or BRTS. It is because... The roads have to be made private vehicle free. People will be only incentivised to use public transport if they find public transport more convenient, faster etc than Private Transport. But there is also another truth that single use zoning breeds a car centric society. Whereas Mixed use zoning breeds a transit oriented society. I believe that 25 - 75 mix of both are needed in our cities. And also... Some PURELY residential area should be disincentivised. Our Rajwada was truly awesome before cars arrived. As of now, Rajwada is literally place to visit in Indore due to congestion. I hope metro brings some changes in the scene. Great video anyway!!
@Akarsh2008 Yea. I agree. I even think that more lines are needed. Metro is almost always worth the cost. There is an option to decrease headway and increase the coaches, once the appropriate infrastructure is built.

First of all jaipur is not a small city . It has population of 40 lakhs. And if this is a small city then i don't know what to say. Jaipur metro has only 11 stations so what do you expect from people to do in a toy train. And that 11 km is also not on good route. Lack of expansion is the main reason of jaipur metro low ridership.
For Indore, I can say easily firstly line Yellow Line is strategically built to catering upcoming IT Parks connectivity to main city in circular manner. It connects Railway Station, Airport, MG Road, Rajwada(City Center & Tourist Attraction), Vijay Nagar, Super Corridor in a circular manner which no other metro does in the India. It will be game changer for Indore. As it will reduce 60% of Emission in the city.
metro is very important for small cities if we want to meet the international standards of cities . metro should be constructed before the conjustion and traffic on roads unlike mumbai and delhi where it was constructed after traffic increased . Bhopal and indore are the best examples because metro is being constucted here at the time when the traffic load is not too high now people will start using metro and traffic conjestion would not be a problem for people living there although it will only be possible if metro is expanded throughout the city and suburbans
It’s not what it is being used for, it’s about how in future it will be used. It’s been 10 years Surat BRTS was started, initially for first 5 years BRTS buses were running empty for most routes, and now most buses run pack full. Infrastructure has to be made in advanced taking future growth in mind.
Make infrastructure for requirements of 10-15 years in future. In future, Cities will get dense, prices for aquisition will rise dramatically, construction cost will rise many times. Make metro lines, city will grow around it.
Construction going with the future in mind, maybe in the next 10 years it will get better which might not be the case if they had started work after 10 years. We can already see that in Mumbai, where it has caused nuisance due to congestion on roads while making Metro Bridges! Only possible answer! Great video PowerTrain
While construction of metro it is viewed as future investment that is the reason high population countries like India and china need them most china built many same is need for India Example;; Nellore, Andhra Pradesh highly feasible as entire city development is in vertical single road fashion so everyone travels in that one road only which has population of 8 lakhs so humongous traffic and high three wheeler concentration
@shaikshafi1284 If Nellore gets one, then Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada-Gunturu (like Delhi-Gurugram-NOIDA), Rajamahendravaram, Kakinada, Kurnool & Tirupati (for the floating "Bhakta" traffic that if added, exceeds all these places) must get one each, in that order.

I know Monorail didnt work much in Mumbai , but they should be tried in tier 2 ... they can carry as much as metro and also are easier and cheaper to construct
The difference between the development in China and India is, China expanded it on the basis of projected expansion. While in India, it's solely due to political reasons.

This is really insightful. So watched a video a few months back about "why the northeast will never get a metro" and one of the reasons was population density. Then this year I heard the news about Bhubaneswar metro. I travel to Bhubaneswar every year and in the memory of that moment, I felt that Bhubaneswar does not need a metro as the city is comparatively small and the population is less. I am in Bhubaneswar right now. And to be honest this is a very fast-developing city. And I could see crowds and traffic(though less) in the city. At this moment this thought struck me that yes. Maybe right now Bhubaneswar does not need a metro but at the current pace of development, it will after 5 years. So, to cater to the public in maybe 2028, the construction needs to start now. Being from Kolkata, I can see that building a metro system right now in Bhubaneswar will benefit the city hugely, as the Kolkata metro is the slowest in terms of construction. The Kolkata metro misses deadline after deadline. Like a part of the 4th line was supposed to open in October but there is no news about it anymore. Same, recently heard that the 5th line of Kolkata will open before March 2024 but only for 2 stations. This just seems like a tactic to please voters before the upcoming elections. If this is the state of the construction of the metro I feel really bad as a regular user at it is very much required for office goers travelling from far away places. The orange line of Kolkata connects the north and south parts of Kolkata will the IT hub of Kolkata, if this line completes, we can expect an IT hub in Kolkata similar to Hyderabad or Pune. But this may well take longer than 2030 to complete as I am sure they will miss the 2027 deadline for the completion of the entire orange line.

In Lucknow metro is the most expensive way of travelling, but the fastest one, as the roads of the route is overcrowded, it can be more popular if government reduce the ticket prices, as I can see many people don't use it due to its prices, good thing is it is gaining popularity,
@insh_ydvv Metro doesn't come cheap & is expensive to maintain too.The user should be in a position to pay for the ticket. It is the essential condition for building the Metro transport in a city.
@@MrPoornakumar I proposed it to decongest the roads and reduce pollution, if it cost same as my bike why would I choose it, it is understandable that as income increases it becomes viable but for the time being it's just unviable for most of people in Lucknow, other modes are much inexpensive.
@@insh_ With the rush across the country (of the 29 states, about 20 capitals have no running Metro now)for more & more Metros, certain norms should be laid down by the Centre. Every new Metro (almost all) can't break even to profits for at least two years. It acts as a drag in giving Metros to new cities, but is essential. Centre should set aside a fund for covering losses of a Metro for the first two years, recovering it later. The criterion thus, for giving a Metro can be eased out.
@@MrPoornakumarexactly I agree with you. If you are able to pay, then go. Maintaining the metro is not an easy task. Local people need to know about Metro maintenance costs and efforts. One thing that can help with small towns metros is connecting with Nearby cities. Developing the stations as massive commercial spaces, they can streamline the city's planning Agra and jaipur metro sort of cover up with tourists who rather take metro instead of getting harassed by taxis
The metro or any other public transport is made with future growth in mind. We keep complaining that things should have been planned long back and not wait till the problem happens. The requirement is to incentivize people to adopt metro lines by creating the last mile connectivity so that people leave their personal vehicles to use the public transport.
I liked your points in video. PCMC is very good in developing road and sewage connectivity in areas before people starts moving. But they always lack in water supply, or public transport connectivity Now metro line should be another priority before developing new areas.
As India is emerging country it's good actually as we build metro today than tomorrow cause it's then more costly and very late as population in this cities also become huge in coming years so I thought it is not a concern but good thing 😊
Living in Kanpur, I would like to cite 3 reasons for not using Metro- 1) Few stations are not at Proper places. Eg. Rawatpur Station is neither closed to Rawatpur Station or Rawatpur crossing (people prefer tempo instead as they are always available on these places as these are busy areas like crossroads, Malls nearby etc.) 2) Metro is neither a first mile nor a last mile connectivity system as of now. So you have to catch an auto/tempo/cab/bus, then ride a metro, catch a cab again. 3) Routes are not proper until new infra is built. Metro is not helping people to reach Offices/Colleges, it is connecting two dots. Eg. People travel Ramadevi to Kalyanpur, Mandhna (GT Road), JK to Phoolbagh/Bada Chauraha and they buy flats accordingly as there are enroute offices, malls. Metro is not parallel to these existing routes.
Let the line be completed sit the South kanpur people are waiting eagerly for the completion, u dont even know the pain of South kanpur people having narrow roads and congestion and traffic jam of tat mill chauraha to get to North kanpur Or sheher area
The amount of people in metro cities is huge, that's the reason we should build more metro cities to divide the population evenly, and not to saturate all in big cities.
Patna Metro is projected to become the second-longest metro network in India, following Delhi. The initial phase spans 32 kilometers, and the expected length of the second phase is 85 kilometers.

Add the 21km Navi Mumbai metro, 29km Thane ring metro and 20km monorail and the total network is supposed to be 400km+. Chennai and Hyderabad are also planning 300km plus metro networks. Kolkata and Bangalore will have 250km+ metro networks. Patna is nowhere near the size or economic relevance of these megacities, an 85 km network will be miniscule compared to what the metro cities of India will have in 10 years

While I appreciate the effort you put into researching and presenting your analysis, there seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the population figures of Bhubaneswar and the surrounding areas. As an Odia residing in the area, I would like to provide some updated information to offer a more accurate perspective. The official data might indicate a population of 12 lakhs, but the ground reality is that the population of Bhubaneswar has significantly increased since then. The city, along with its surrounding areas such as Khurda and Jatni, easily surpasses the 30-lakh mark. Additionally, when considering the population of Cuttack and its urban areas, the overall figure is substantially higher than what was presented in your analysis. It's crucial to note that Bhubaneswar and Cuttack serve as major hubs for the entire region, impacting a much larger population than suggested by the data you referenced. The local transit system, especially MO BUS, is a clear indication of the growing demand for efficient transportation in the area, with buses frequently reaching full capacity. Moreover, the logic that a metro should come to an area if the population density is ten lakh per square kilometer is somewhat misguided and oversimplified. Population density alone does not determine the necessity or success of a metro system. Factors such as urban planning, traffic congestion, economic development, and the capacity of existing transportation systems play a crucial role in making such decisions. As an Odia, I firmly believe that Bhubaneswar needs a metro system to address the increasing transportation needs of the growing population. The success of metro systems in other state capitals reinforces the necessity of such infrastructure for a smoother urban living experience. I hope this information provides a more accurate and nuanced perspective on the situation. I would be happy to discuss this further and collaborate on content that sheds light on the positive aspects and potential success of the Bhubaneswar Metro.
As an Odia, I agree with your statement. Bhubaneswar doesn't seem to 30 lakh+ population, but might be 20 lakh+ if we consider surrounding areas. Culture of the denizens there is one we need to emulate like Lee Kuan Yu, the first PM of Singapore who made Singapore what it is now. During the war (WW II) amidst all that bombing on London, he lived there. One ascends the steps from underground (Metro that they call it "tube"), to reach street level. He used to see a neat pile of daily newspapers on the parapet, with a tin box by the side. Everyone (desiring to read the days' news) used to pick one copy & drop its price as change, in the box next. There was none to supervise & none steals the money collected. He (Lee Kuan Yu) decided then & took an oath, "I'll make Singapore like this (a city of responsible citizens)". And he did it.

It's better to build today if we can easily build in small metro cities because once it gets crowded it will be very difficult because of no space available. Banglore is an example of that.
#AskPT recently saw shrinagars smart city project wher ethe city is beautified but it doesnt look great i mean it still looks like some governtmet officer tried to do the work somehow why dont we take help from private companies in designing the cities
@Abhyuday_rai Delhi Metro was planned, constructed, the men recruited & adjacent infrastructure developed by a (your "some") governtme(n)t officer only; his name is E. Sreedharan who graduated in Engineering from Kakinada (yes, it is in India) way back in 1950s). There are many such GOVERNMENT OFFICERS (another bigger personality was Verghese Kurian to whom we owe the supply of daily milk packets). These eminent citizens of India (at least these two) deserve Bharat Ratna. You must know them before commenting as an Indian citizen, with a sweeping statement that you must have learnt from some politician.
Ultimately India's large population will have to adapt to electrical public large vehicles. Not only trains but electrical buses and vans will also be helpful. In small cities, e-buses should ply on monorails. It will be cost effective , fast and clean.

commendable??? bro they're building fast asf ,just wait till 2024 ,its opening

@-10REASONS
Delhi Metro owes its sustenance, mainly because of the University crowd coming from as far away as Dhola Kuan & Janak puri as they have no other dependable alternative.

But there is also another truth that single use zoning breeds a car centric society.
Whereas
Mixed use zoning breeds a transit oriented society.
I believe that 25 - 75 mix of both are needed in our cities. And also... Some PURELY residential area should be disincentivised.

Every new Metro (almost all) can't break even to profits for at least two years. It acts as a drag in giving Metros to new cities, but is essential. One thing that can help with small towns metros is connecting with Nearby cities.
Developing the stations as massive commercial spaces, they can streamline the city's planning
Agra and jaipur metro sort of cover up with tourists who rather take metro instead of getting harassed by taxis
The metro or any other public transport is made with future growth in mind. We keep complaining that things should have been planned long back and not wait till the problem happens. The requirement is to incentivize people to adopt metro lines by creating the last mile connectivity so that people leave their personal vehicles to use the public transport.
Bangalore Metro is running 20 years behind, it needs a lot more lines today then what is operational.
I liked your points in video. PCMC is very good in developing road and sewage connectivity in areas before people starts moving.
But they always lack in water supply, or public transport connectivity
Now metro line should be another priority before developing new areas.
As India is emerging country it's good actually as we build metro today than tomorrow cause it's then more costly and very late as population in this cities also become huge in coming years so I thought it is not a concern but good thing 😊
Living in Kanpur, I would like to cite 3 reasons for not using Metro-
1) Few stations are not at Proper places. Eg. Rawatpur Station is neither closed to Rawatpur Station or Rawatpur crossing (people prefer tempo instead as they are always available on these places as these are busy areas like crossroads, Malls nearby etc.)
2) Metro is neither a first mile nor a last mile connectivity system as of now.

But I agree with your statement that Bhubaneswar needs a metro. The road choosen is actually a really busy road in evenings and during day times. Metro will bring 25-50% of those people off the roads.

I disagree, India's smaller cities will grow into very large metropolisis soon. Indore and Bhopal will became massive megacities in 10 years. Kanpur only small section opened. Kochi metro is very successful, only 10 lakh population.
@Sudarshan128
Per capita income of of Kochi dweller must be more than many other cities. And that (paying capacity) is also a factor.
Ideally yes, but these cities residents will have to pay for the metros right now. Metros are very expensive, and if they are running in losses and not benefitting that many people it's not really worth it
Kochi metro is incurring loss 1Cr ₹ per day

Jaipur had a dire need for a good metro network because they haven't made the metro in most congested areas. They made a metro which can be constructed fast and at that time public said we don't need a metro but now the roads are exceeding its capacity.
I agree that public transport supply should come before the demand but how did they select metro? Metro is not the only public transport available.
Money. Adding buses is not a big project.
We need to upgrade Indian cities...
More and more people from rural India will move to cities..
Their population would only increase...
Even if it takes 10 years for metro capacity to be utilised...we should build it 15 years in advance
Banane de bhai ye cities future mein bohot badi hongi. Abhi nhi kiya to Mumbai jaisa ho jayega. Bangalore Kolkata Chennai jaise cities mein 500 km ki metro ab tak ho jani chahiye thi
Jarur hone chahiye.
In the next 20-25 years a very large chunk of rural population will be migrating in the cities.
So it is necessary.
As a Kanpurite, I can confirm within 1 year Kanpur Metro will go in profit.😊
Hyderabad metro went into losses for the first 2 years due to lack of ridership. Now it is so full that people struggle to get seats even for short journeys. It takes time for any city.
But is still in losses
Mostly state capital mei honi cahiye ya neo metro small and less coach wali
Bhubaneswar doesn't need metro. It needs industry and IT firms so that these can create jobs. This city has a lot of potential but because of the corruption and lack of government initiatives, we are too much behind.
I think its not wasting , In future it will be more helpable

But somebody should foot the bill, No!
I think by prioritizing development in the northen region the government I'd taking step in right direction..it will bring stable growth across all regions, and reduce the burden and overdependence on current metros...

Viewed from today's Metro they are ancient. But they served well at least half a dozen generations well. So people say thanks to them.
Lol good joke ny and london metro fail ? Funny you people are
Fun fact : The world's most densely populated city, Manila, has a population density of 43,064 people per sq. km.
"Which is nowhere near your figure of 10 lakh people per sq. km."
Additional fact : India's most densely populated city, Mumbai, has a population density of 21,000 people per sq. km.

I would like to say after watching this Video, that you have done a good analysis, research, and put your thoughts and opinion without bias. I wish more youtubers would follow your approach. I fully agree with you, that India needs to build its infrastructure, in a planned, sustainable, modern , looking at its future growth potential,(even if it is not economally viable in the short term) which will help in fast transportation, better health and well being due to less pollution, environmentally sustainable in an affordable, and also attracting Projects such as housing, Medical , educational, business, Manufacturing. India needs to look at least 20 years ahead. In Europe , Environmentally Friendly options such as Electric Cycles, Electric Buses and Trams and Train stations, airports all are linked with Metro. Even when you look at the example of Chennai (where i live) metro was not important since we have buses...However this started to change on 2015 when our city became a metropolis and traffic congestion was common.Hence Chennai metro was made to alleviate traffic and promote better city infrastructure.even the metro bridges can be made through the most narrower junctions and improve the urban infrastructure and city planning
Taxpayers of East India raise your voice. We pay taxes equally but all of it is spent on Gujarat and UP infrastructure.
If transportation of a city is commendable then automatically it will become a favourable destination for businesses and it will enable to diversify the development in multiple economic centres in a state

The metro in pune city is a prime example of this. Unplanned, unessential and cancerous expenditure. With miscellaneous expenses considered, the cost of the Pune metro is 16,000 crore. No one, absolutely no working individual uses it for daily commute. It has become a destination of one day school trips for primary schools. On the other hand farmers are committing suicide almost on daily basis. Just imagine, we could have trained lakhs of farmers, could have given them specialized equipment. Established farmer training centers across Maharashtra and in a matter of 4-5 years could have completely eradicated the concept of farmer suicides

@Abhyuday_rai
Delhi Metro was planned, constructed, the men recruited & adjacent infrastructure developed by a (your "some") governtme(n)t officer only; his name is E.
