  • Volkswagen doesn’t tend to play fast and loose with family car design. The Golf, the Passat… hardly radical, are they? VW relies on common sense and sure-fire quality to sell its cars, but is that enough when it comes to the brave new world of EVs? The ID4 is VW’s electric crossover, sharing its base with the Audi Q4 e-tron and Skoda Enyaq but priced to rival the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Cars with risky, polarising ideas. So, is VW’s ID4 (and its annoying dashboard) a safe bet, or the dullest EV you can shake a charging lead at? Over to Top Gear Magazine’s Serious Car Tester Ollie Kew for the Top Gear Tested verdict.

    This review kind of missed the mark on who this car is for: a suburban family with young kids who likes a big back seat and a super comfortable ride because the kids will get car sick on the highway otherwise. It is affordable compared to other EVs, has normal looks... it's perfect, as it's perfectly boring self.

      Affordable! 😂😂 Golf from £23k, iD3 from £32k. An iD3 is the equivalent of a Golf and 66,000 miles worth of fuel. But your mythical family won’t be doing 66k miles though, as the PCP contract is probably 10k per year for three years. And you definitely won’t keep it for six years, how would a six year old car look to their “friends” at the prep school pick-up point 300 years from home. They’ll Probably use another 4 odd tons of CO2 to make another one well before 6 years are up. Unless of course their company bought it for them (tax payer funded company car tax break - you’re welcome!) or they live in city (where they should walk or cycle really) with off street parking. Otherwise electric car drivers have been utterly had by the Ad men. What utter green washed BS. If the family in question want to help the planet , don’t have two kids, buy sh1t and use it until it can’t be used any more, and if you have to have a car, buy one and keep it forever.

      What gibberish are you going on about? In the States many of us are keeping our cars over a decade. Due to a lack of investment in public transit, many of us have no choice but to buy a car. This is a fine solution. Batteries can be refurbished.

    • @Marcke-tb1hb
      @Marcke-tb1hb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChiChicken and your counter arguments are? It’s always interesting when arguing electric cars with people as yours are all based on hopes and dreams, not facts. Like batteries being recycled. Almost none of the chemicals in a cell are recycled only the aluminium box. The rest goes to landfill. Things are very different in the U.S than here. For a start, the average age of a car there is 50% higher, much better than here. But, the average car in the UK drove 7,400 miles in 2019 compared to 14,200 in the US, There are simply no arguments, other than those I mentioned, tax breaks and their use in large cities, for an electric car in the U.K.

      @@Marcke-tb1hb I'm having a very hard time following your original comment. PCP isn't a term I'm familiar with, a UK thing? I know that when I placed my order for this car that I would be spending 40 to 50k on a vehicle. The car that it is replacing is a decade old hybrid. I want a car with the latest safety features, that this has. I could be spending that money on one that is going to be pumping pollution into the community or one that could take advantage of the solar power that I have on my house. I live right next to a National laboratory that is in embarking on recycling (reconditioning) lithium batteries. I also work in some states that have significant oil drilling and people can't even drink the water from their tap because of how contaminated it is. Clearly we are making trade-offs.

    This was the only EV that my fiancee was even remotely interested in because of the look of it. She hates how every other EV seems to be trying to look like something out of a Sci Fi movie. I think there's a massive amount of people like that. Just because the exterior isn't futuristic doesn't mean it's bad! A lot of people prefer that! And a lot of people also don't really give a rip about 0-60 or top speeds. I know anybody going with this over a tesla probably does not care or even want it to be that fast! I'm glad they have something out there for people that want some familiarity, it's going to help have a wider adoption of EV vehicles

      I've been testing EVs for months now and I prefer the look of the ID4 to the Tesla or the Ioniq 5. I loved the interior design and it felt very well built and solid. I also think the exterior styling is better. The ioniq 5 will not age well, it has many wonderful details but not enough restraint has been shown in the execution. I've owned many Golfs and GTIs and they are understated in the same way as the ID4. Drive an ID4 yourself and it may surprise you.

    Living in Norway , electric is the way to go. Charging ports everywhere, tax exemptions, reduced tolls and public transport lane accessibility. Problem is, at the moment a decent Ev with range is virtually impossible to acquire within the next 6 months.

    Test drove the 2022 ID.4 yesterday. I agree, it doesn't have bells and whistles but I liked the fact that the outside didn't look over the top space age. Here in Ireland they cannot get them quick enough and are sold before they hit the floor. They are popular here and because Ireland is not a big island, we can easily get to Dublin on one charge. It was very comfortable as we drove it on some of the roughest roads here (there are a lot of them) and it felt very steady. All and all we put a deposit on the only ID.4 they had available until next year. We will get ours late October.

I would think it would be a pain in the ass to have to go to the front of the car for the cable.
      As far as the reviewer complaining that you have to deal with a boot full of crap (I think he said groceries) to get to the cable, the only time you need that cable is when slow-charging (Level 1) at home. DC fast chargers and wall-mounted Level 2 chargers at home have cables integrated into the charger. He's moaning about nothing.

    The scheduled charging feature in the ID.4 is simply not fit for purpose. I've had mine back to the dealer. There was nothing they could do. There's been no software update since I bought it 6 months ago. If I switch on from indoors it only charges at an attenuated 1kWh rate. I have to go outside at night in all weathers to plug it in in the early morning to take advantage of my low night tariff - then I have to set an alarm at 4:30am to switch it off. I'm in the UK and VW did nothing to correct the wrong information about the Prolife model here. Unlike the one in the states there's no reversing camera or automatically dipping headlights or automatically switching on of windscreen wipers or MW radio. In the states these cars are on a ridiculous waiting list and it's probably for all the reasons you don't like it.
    It's like half the price of the low end Teslas, it's roomy and comfortable, it does everything you need of a car in a place where you need to drive a ton just to be functional. It's everything a normal person would care about.
    In California I'm seeing so many 100,000$+ Teslas being used for nothing more than driving to work and back because it's what's available. People are justifying buying cars that are seemingly made for drag racing just for fuel cost and less maintenance. It's a strange world...

    Maybe I'm old and boring, but I'm really not offended by the styling at all. The outside to me is pleasant and understated, so...German then. The interior is very comfortable, the seats are great, the driving position is good, and there are all the toys you need. The touchscreen isn't great but it really isn't that bad, and updates continue to roll out which means it MIGHT improve over time. As for performance, it's completely adequate. They're not rocket ship fast but it's more than fast enough for normal driving, and that's what 99% of owners will do - get in and drive it around normally, not flat out, not drag racing, just getting around. If you want a Porsche, buy a Porsche, this is the peoples' car and it fits the needs of the people pretty well. What about a comparison to its peers like the Hyundais and Kias? Not everyone is interested in a £55k Model Y with arguably an even more dull interior, worse build quality and a terrible ride.

Where i come from, in Germany, the typical customers of VW are the absolutly normal people who want "just a car" with all they need but nothing more, nothing too exciting or futuristic. The people who don't really dare, they want what they already know. VW are well made and work, and that's all the "generic" car customer wants without spending too much time on researching stuff and comparing values. The ID4 is far from an actually bad car, it's just the most bog-standard unexciting car in the EV space. And to be honest that's exactly what VW is mostly about these days.
      VW customers, at least here in Germany where i live, are the ones who want a car that "just works" and does nothing else, nothing to exciting, nothing to daring or attention grabbing, a standard vehicle for their daily commute. And that's basically what the ID4 is, unexciting but working the way it's supposed to work for the generic customer who just wants to get from A to B in relative comfort.
