YES: Turbo 1JZ-Swapped Mitsubishi Starion - (Track) One Take

  • This ultra-clean Mitsubishi Starion is a street car, and has never been on a race track before. But it was so cool we couldn't help but see how it would hold up to a few laps, and its owner was an incredibly good sport. Aside from brakes not entirely up to track work, the 400+ horsepower 1JZ, chassis, and steering were shockingly competent, lap after lap.
    This video was filmed at the #GRIDLIFE Motorsports and Music Festival, Gingerman Raceway, June 2017. For more info about upcoming #GRIDLIFE events, visit: www.grid.life

    This is one of the best Starions out there. Most of you have no idea what this car used to look like or be. The work Mike has put in is inspirational. I personally own a Starion and the stock brakes really aren't bad at all. Overall this car is amazing and the people complaining about the brakes don't even know how to change brake pads.

    B4 every1 shits on the guy 4 having stock brakes and a squared tire setup Matt did say this was a street car he probably doesn't track it. He probably just pulls on cars on the freeway as a sleeper and stock brakes are probably good enough for that even tho I'd feel more comfortable with upgraded tires and brakes either way pretty fkn nice build

Took a friend's truck (F-150 with the 300-6) out in a snowstorm to do snow removal,and discovered that it had 1&1/2 working brakes on it,no muffler,one headlight and most annoying, one working windshield wiper. .... white knuckles in a whiteout...boss says, just pump the brakes alot !

    Matt, I love that you're driving all the cars I had drooled over in other youtube videos and giving them a review. I have always been partial to square body cars of the 80's primarily. Especially Supra Celica/ RX7/ Starions and of course the lightweight rwd corollas. All these early imports are making me really miss my 1st gen eclipse gsx. In a lot of ways I miss it, but I got rid of it before I had to replace the trans again due to a cracked housing the first time around. I managed to drive the car around 150k total and made around 350 whp reliably for the most part, if you don't cound trans issues from time to time, and motor mounts never holding up. I finally ended up making my own mounts with the liquid rubber (eurethane) I spellled that wrong, but ya. Anyways I come here and watch videos of older imports to get my fix so I don't go and make a stupid purchase that mt bank account will not like lol.

    Bunch of comments on stock brakes being stupid on a modified car...If you drive it within reason on the street, you will not reach speeds that the stock brakes were not intended for. A 3000 lbs vehicle at X speed has the same kinetic energy to disperse as heat no matter what amount of time the car spent reaching said speed. Upgraded brakes are for spirited, continuous illegal speeds or racetrack and most often only provide extended capibility (more brake mass to absorb the heat) rather than more stopping power. The limit to braking is always the contact patch on the road, i.e the TIRES.

      Boosty boost I showed up to park my car with the Haltech booth as they asked me to. My car was never intended to be on the track. I built a street car you simple minded fuck. It's a car I built to drive on the roads. Not a track. I purchased no track passes at all and it was never going to be out there. I don't care what you think or say, you're dead ass wrong. I don't track the car. I drive it on the street. To work. Home. Car shows. Anywhere I please. And it's a damn good time doing so. Put your keyboard down and go build a lego set.

    I remember seeing this car on SpooledUpTv's channel, the owner is super cool. The Starion did great for what it brought to the track... Ya of course it could've done better with bigger brakes an better tires, but its a street car, with brake performance from the 80's. I can't wait to work on mine I just bought... Might go 1jz as well, if not 4G63. An it was this car that gave me the drive to do what I plan on doing.

    Matt, Like jons car, this car is far from stock, but its also clearly not a track car like jons. Both cars are pretty awesome though, and there are others out there that are just as awesome that you might like too. 30 years ago these cars were pretty quick, but in stock form, can not keep up with modern cars.
    I recommend trying one with the original motor, and some gentle mods, and one is stock form to get a better idea of what these cars are like.

    Starioms really were a, remarkable car of the early 80’s. In fact they were renowned back in the day for their makes.
    The stock two litre turbo in the JA I had in Australai. Didn't deliver enough low end out of the hole torque so the tubos were always raced for boost and I had three raptor rebuilt and up spaced with a Mocro Tech racing computer. When I destroyed them forth 2 litre engine, or was time to get a front cur from Japan and insert a Nossam V6 three litre turbo.
    That was Mitsubishi should have done from the get go, two more was not enough cubes, for such a brilliant balanced sports car with a heavy curb weight. Abiet very fast and able undermboost, not so much off the mark.
    I loved my Starion through all its incarnations throughout the 1980’ and 1990’s, parts eventually became impossible to source.
    A station with a bog ass bog torque and KW with a twin turbo, makes a retro weapon that is magic.
    Loved your video, AGrade👍🇦🇺

    Am I the only one that's kind of hoping this thing will make a comeback now that Nissan owns a chunk of Mitsubishi?
    It could be the entry-level version of the next Z, which is supposed to be a bit smaller and lighter anyway. Just take the Z, give it a 4B11T, gut weight where you can (which shouldn't be hard, if all the dead weight in the current Z is any indication), and change up the front end a little bit.

      Stock motor is 4G54B and is unreliable AF unless completely stock. TBI system was poorly designed.

    • @ralphlongo1975
      @ralphlongo1975 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the stock engine is heavy and needs enough upgrades to be reliable, that swapping it is actually easier and cheaper to do.

    • @LP640PR
      @LP640PR 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      CommandoPG I'm a Mitsubishi enthusiast. And the 4g54 is just not memorable or even worth it unless you want to keep it a stock starion. So this build is absolutely sweet

      That's because the stock Starion engines were so bad even the purists don't want them. That and they're nothing interesting like a Wankel or something.

    Matt i'm sure you're aware but for most cars STOCK brakes are more then enough, it's the tire compound etc that plays more of a role in stopping power. A lot of these car manufacturers sell cars with HUGE breaks when in actuality a properly sized rotor/pad/tire combo will destroy a car with "only big brakes" in stopping power.

    This seems like a good car! From what you tell us it sound like it does need brakes, but the tires... I personally enjoy driving with shitty tires. I feel like I learn to know the car better as well as you'll have "saver" speeds when you want to be an idiot an drift a corner on "Mexican" roads.
    For the festival, if you ever have the chance Matt, you should go to Gatebil (Norway and Sweden). There you'll really see some crazy shit. for example: new sirocco with Quattro and straight 5 turbo doing 4wd drifts; twin-engine Starlet; 25 year old diesels running hundreds of HP; UrQuattro & lotus elise & E30 M3 etc All running 800+HP. If you ever have see an opportunity, even as private trip, I can highly recommend it! Just search for Gatebil and you will get the idea. Greetings from The Netherlands

    Nice build. Nice to see it mildly tracked. Looks like it would be an excellent track day car with a bit more tuning...
